Serious Firewire Meltdown

I'm working on a film right now, with four different drives - two Lacie D2s, and two Western Digital MyBooks. A couple of weeks ago, something very strange started happening - the firewire cards on every computer we use stop working. It's not just the drives that they don't recognize, it's any firewire equipment, like cameras or video decks too. The firewire bus comes up in the system profiler, and running the extended diagnostics from the install dvd doesn't come up with any problems either. If anyone has had this happen, please let me know - we desperately need to figure this out. I think that one of the Western Digital drives is frying everything it touches, because I can't figure out what else could be happening, but I have never heard of this kind of thing, and I'm hoping that it's not quite that serious.
Some backstory: one of the Lacies, when plugged into my firewire 400 port on my Macbook Pro, started spewing smoke about two weeks ago. I obviously didn't plug it in again, but I was worried about plugging anything else into the port, so I brought it into the Apple Store. They plugged a drive in, booted up from it, and said everything was fine. Soon afterwards, my computer stopped booting up, so I tried to connect it to an intel core 2 due imac as a target disk - nothing happened. Now, the imac doesn't recognize any firewire devices at all, even though, as I mentioned, all diagnostics come back fine. I've reset the PRAM and the power manager, repaired permissions, repaired the disk, reinstalled the 10.4.10 update, and am now just totally stuck. I do know that my firewire card recognizes devices, so the problem isn't there... I also know that the deck that isn't recognized by the imac isn't recognized by my computer either, which concerns me a lot.
I went back into the apple store with the two Western Digital drives that we have, and the guy couldn't get one of them to mount via firewire. It's brand new, and it used to work, so I don't know what's going on. Probably it's just a lemon, but with all the other problems we've been having I have to consider it could be connected. I'm pretty sure that this drive was never connected to my Macbook either.
So, in closing, anyone... what the **** is going on here?

I'm interested too - my FW HD has stopped responding. Could it be the 10.4.10 update?
By any chance, does it completely mess up the colours on reboot? (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1093224)

  • On Board Firewire does not work properly

I have a new Qosmio X500 with Windwos 7 Professional.  The onboard firewire port has serious problems.  I used Adobe Premiere CS5 and when I try to play out a clip through the firewire port, I get video reference errors, which means the port is not sending out a continuous signal.  I disabled it and installed a firewire PCI Express card and it works fine.  The problem is I need that card slot for other things and I paid for a firewire port and it does not work.
I looked on the internet and apparently new laptops have been having serious firewire problems.  Does anyone know how to get this port to work properly?  I tried going back to legacy drivers but that didn't work.

I don't have one of these machines, and my firewire stuff is in boxes somewhere.
But, perhaps it's a matter of power or level?  I remember at some point USB peripherals had some issues unless used with a powered hub.  Perhaps a powered firewire hub might help.  I know I have a couple someplace that I used when daisy chaining wasn't working.

  • Firewire not re-mounting iPod 

I have seen people having problems with Firewire and their iPods. So thought I would also post my problem.
I have an iPod G4 and it has serious Firewire mounting problems. It will only mount once after a boot-up, if disconnected and reconnected it will only charge the iPod and won't mount it again. To get the iPod mounted using Firewire again I have to reboot, sometimes it will mount if I swap to USB then back to Firewire. I will mention it mounts the iPod fine when using my USB cable.
If there are a number of people with this issue Apple needs to address it!

  • Can I daisy-chain a G-RAID Pro 2TB with a bunch of other G-RAID's?

    Hey there,
I'm wondering if there would be any issues adding a G-RAID Pro into my current daisy-chained G-RAID configuration.
    - I've got seven 500GB G-RAID's all daisy-chained together and running into my G5.
    - Two of my 500GB G-RAID's are RAIDed together so the first one is connected to the onboard Firewire 800 port of my G5 and the other to my additional Firewire PCI card.
    - The remaining 5 drives are daisy-chained into the drive that is connected to the onboard FW 800.
This hasn't posed a problem thus far, but I'm wondering if adding a whole new G-RAID Pro is possible with this configuration, or if there's anything I should know before I decide. I left a message for the tech department at G-Tech but they're so busy over there I figured I check in here.
I'm thinking about getting the G-RAID Pro 2 TB because I have 2 projects coming up for which I'll need a whole lot more space than I currently have. If anybody has any other hard drive suggestions I'd be open to them as well, of course.
Thanks a lot for any thoughts,
    Joni

Jerry, did you see my post the other day? I don't know if there is a conflict or not, but I've had some serious firewire problems for the last year and just last weekend I was unable to access any media files that were on a lacie for a specific project. And when I tried to copy the files (after closing fcp and running diskwarrior on the drive), I kept getting error messages. When I came in the next day and started the system with the graids disconnected, the lacie performed perfectly. Seems like there might be some sort of conflict. Or just a weird one time occurence. But since I've been having all sorts of weird inconsistent problems with firewire drives and I did have a mixture of lacie and gtech drives my instinct says it might be the source of the problem. I just installed a burly 5 bay sata enclosure, so my need for firewire drives, except for sneakernet, is over.
I post this kind of stuff with the hope that if someone is experiencing weird firewire behavior, they can try to eliminate at least this possible cause.

  • Hard Drive Dasiy Chain drops drives

    G'day y'all,
I'm editing tutorial videos using FCP 5.1 on a MacBook Pro. My source material is stored on 5 external hard drives. I have 4-500 GB Maxtor III and 1-1TB Maxtor III drives.
When I have the 4-500 GB drives in the daisy chain (using firewire 800) it works great. The problem is when I add the 1 TB to the chain. With the 1 TB drive in the chain 1 or 2 of the 500 GB drives gets randomly removed/unmounted while I am working in FCP.
I noticed that the 500 GB drives are formatted as OS X extended and the 1 TB drive is formatted OS X extended (journaled.)
I talked to Seagate tech support and they thought that the difference in the formatting was the reason the drives were being dropped. I talked to a friend at Apple and she didn't think that the difference in formatting would cause the problem but maybe a power supply or firewire issue, but she works with software so...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, Terese

I'm with your friend. It seems highly unlikely to me that the journaling would make the difference. If you're working on your macbook pro, I would suggest that you get a firewire 800 card so that you can divide the drives over 2 buses. You might try using shorter firewire cables, although in the past I've had up to 11 drives chained without any serious problems. Using higher quality firewire cables also might make a difference.
Are all the firewire interfaces the same? I had serious firewire problems that I think could only be attributed to the fact that I was mixing lacie and g-raid drives. Someone on the list (I think Jerry Hoffman) suggested that there might be some sort of compatability problem between the different firewire interfaces on the drives. I had an extremely problematic lacie drive that performed flawlessly when the g-raids were not connected.
Personally, I've moved to Sata drives with a 5 bay external sata enclosure. This is only a possible solution on your macbookpro, not your imac, though.

  • LaserJet 4L with Windows XP. Erratic behavior

My LaserJet 4L has been gently used since I bought it many years ago.
It was always a PERFECT machine.
But suddenly it is not reliable. The test page works and sometimes it prints fine from documents or web pages, but the erratic behavior when I try to print  now includes:
        1. All lights coming on even though there is no paper jam and the paper tray is not empty.
         2. One blank sheet prints, instead of what I wanted.
HP phone support said to buy a new machine but the store where I bought the machine said it might be just an easy fix like a wire or a driver.
I prefer to fix the machine instead of buying a new one because it is more ecological!

Honey, it's time to start saying your farewells to your beloved printer.  The behaviour you are describing is the beginnings of a serious hardware meltdown involving the High Voltage Power Suppy and your formatter board (and possibly the DC controller but generally when that goes the printer will not recover from whatever error or behaviour it is performing).

  • G3 Firewire...Serious help needed on Start-up!

    Hello folks,
I've had my G3 power book for 4 1/2 years now. I've never had any serious problems until now. When I start it up I get the flashing question mark. I've had this problem before but I was able to fix it by pressing
'shift' while starting up. I've also tried holding the 'space bar', 'cmd-opt-p-r', 'c'. Anything that I try does not seem to work. I am unable to start up from the cd because my cd drive does not work. I've also tried an external cd drive but that doesn't work either. My main concern is that I can get some saved information that I desperately need.
Is there anything else I can do? Please help.
    Johnnie

    Johnnie,
Shut down the Powerbook FireWire a.k.a. Pismo and disconnect all cables, PC cards, and peripherals.
Press the PRAM reset keys (command-option-R-P), power on and release the keys after you hear two startup chimes, and see if it will boot. You have probably already done this many times, but give it a try anyway.
The host computer...running 9.x or 10.x? If 10.x, the Finder Preferences may not be set to display an HD icon on the desktop; open a Finder window and see if the HD is in the left column.
Does the Pismo powerbook properly enter FireWire Target Disk Mode. Please follow the instructions in the link in my previous reply.
Host computer turned on > Pismo turned off > connect Pismo to host via a 6-pin FW cable > start Pismo while pressing the 'T' key until the FireWire symbol appears on the Pismo's screen.

  • Serious audio static when using display or FireWire

I've got a strange issue with my Core Duo Mini (1.66GHz). When plugged in to my stereo using an RCA Y-splitter from RadioShack, there is static bad enough to drown out all the audio. This happens with any combination of audio cables I use, but does not happen with other computers plugged into the same outlets, or with headphones or portable, self-powered speakers.
So far I've survived using an AirPort Express, but decided that I've had enough of fiddling with audio delays in VLC when watching DVDs and tonight rewired everything. The buzz is still there.
What I inadvertently discovered is that if I leave my display (Apple 21" Studio CRT) and two FireWire hard drives unplugged, the static disappears.
I'm considering the purchase of a USB audio out device (such as the iMic), but would rather not spend more money on this.
    Thanks for any insights!

I've been having a similar problem where I'd get a low buzzing sound going to my self-powered speakers. After doing some research, I found that I'm just getting electrical interference from one of the devices in the chain. So the only solution for me was to get a Ground Loop Isolator which basically grounds the electrical interference in the wires before going to your stereo.

  • No firewire device.  Are you serious?

FCE says it's Unable to Locate Firewire Device.
This remains true after two days of troubleshooting.
I have done everything...trashing preferences, checking device control, trashing different QuickTime receipts according to posts on this forum, repairing permissions, changing the firewire cable, using a different port -- everything. I don't know that there's anything left to do.
I went and saw an Apple Genius this morning. All he could recommend was upgrading to 10.4.8. So I did. But it didn't help.
I used System Profiler. It sees the Sony TRV38. Even iMovie HD sees the Sony TRV38. (Yes, I know that FCE uses a different protocol, but the fact is the connection is there...it's not a hardware problem.) Everything sees the Sony except for FCE.
I am getting very nervous because I have a project to start and iMovie is not the solution for me. Does anyone know of something else I can try???

  • Seriously I need help!! PC cant detect ipod through firewire or usb.

It's been months since my 3rd gen 20 GB ipod stopped working correctly. After I installed the new updater for my (03-23-2006) computer, my pc cant detect the ipod AT ALL!!! It's not showing in itunes, not showing up in the updater, and it's not showing up in "My Computer". I plug it in the usb slots, it does NOTHING. Plug it through firewire... all it does is just charges up and that's it.
I tried unistalling and reinstalling old versions of the updater and itunes but even that's not working. My ipod use to work fine by either connecting the ipod through a firewire or USB. Now, NONE of the usb or firewire slots (back and front) wont detect it.
I did the 5 R's hundreds of times and placed it in disk hard trying to see if any of the slots would detect it but no luck!! I also reset the ipod in every usb and firewire slot but no luck. I alse disable my norton antivirus but that didnt help either. There's nothing wrong with the usb or firewire cables because they both worked with my friend's ipod.
I even drove over 5 miles to the nearest apple store to see if they can help and their macs couldnt detect the ipod, even though my ipod was formated for win. They couldnt help me at all.
    I've must of done EVERYTHING!!
    Someone please help!!!
3rd gen 20 GB   Windows XP

My girlfriends 3rd gen 20G Ipod is having similar problems. If I connect it via USB, the PC doesn't recognise it, and if I connect it via Firewire, I get a blue screen with ntfs.sys are the named culprit.
I've tried it on two differnet PCs now with the same results (both with latest iTunes and update software on them).
I've still got a 3rd gen 40G iPod thats working fine with both PCs, so im starting to think it's a problem with the disk in the iPod though. Although it's usable, theres some strange clicking noises when I connect it (before the crash...), and it tends to always skip the first song in a playlist/album etc and only play the second one.

  • RCA to Firewire converter?

I'm just starting to get into real editing (FC Exp rather than iMovie) and I realize that people may give me video in fromat other than my mini DV. Am I right in thinking I need a converter (RCA to Firewire?) to get video off their camcorder onto my Mac?
If so, are there some things I should look for/be wary of in a converter? Do some have trouble with Macs? Would if be cheaper to purchase some kind of player that will play and output several types of tape?
Sorry if this is either too broad or covered elsewhere, I didn't find other info here. Any advice would be appreciated, I am just starting with Final Cut Exp. and I'm hoping to go from hobby to small home business, but don't want to waste $ or start with bad habits....
    Thanks,
    Bryan

I mainly Camera Op, but can also edit and started off in a similar way to the way you're intending, but I'd had a bit more camera operating experience and so really the editing came after, which is why I was giving you an answer from the perspective of all round video production.
Having said that, as you describe it, you may be OK starting slowly, offering editing services as a way in. It's just that folk may ask you to shoot some stuff as well, so it would be crazy not to learn camera techniques just in case.
Starting off small by perhaps doing a couple of projects cheaply for friends/relatives/neighbours and things may snowball by word of mouth. As you get more experienced, you may be able to advertise locally or on the web. You just don't want to promise what you can't deliver and get negative feedback.
If you're not too experienced, don't put all your eggs in one basket and invest all you have and chuck in your job.
I went back to college as a mature student and took a college degree in Media Production, with tutors that had TV, Film and Radio Industry experience. I also did as much as I could out of college to increase my knowledge and scrimped and saved for equipment a bit at a time.
After college I worked in a crappy job part time, doing bits and pieces, both for myself and for others who'd seen I was serious and reliable and knew how to wield a camera in a half decent fashion.
As I got more work, it put me in a position to be able to chuck in my old job, but I didn't do it 'till I was sure I could get enough work to pay the bills. I've done corporates, weddings, music video, documentary, fiction and freelance news camera, mostly camera op but also editing, sound, directing - it helps to be able to multitask!
So my advice is to start it off as a sideline, learn as much as you can and only upgrade your equipment if you can justify the expense or need. You may start editing home videos for people but as your capabilities expand, different avenues may open. It really does depend upon how much you want it and how much you're prepared to put in.
Either that or win the lottery or marry a rich widow!
    Good luck.
    D.

  • Temporarily freezing audigy 2 and firewire not working - sol

    hi,
i had two problems with my audigy 2 using windows xp:
    a) my firewire port didnt appear to work. i had only one device using firewire which was my creative jukebox zen. i could only transfer 95% of the first mp3 and then it would say that my mp3 player is not responding.
    b) i experienced random and temporary freezes, not only while gaming but even when writing e-mails. everything would hang for a few seconds and then continue to work like if you write text it will appear after the hang.
firewire: i used my audigy 2 in my old pc with windows me and win 2000 without any problems. neither with firewire nor with the eax4 driver patch. under win xp i could only transfer mp3s via usb and that is slow as hell as you can imagine. i first tried if transfers using the firewire port on my mobo worked but it didnt, same prob. i found a fix from microsoft that is not listed in windowsupdate at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en (KB885222). that did not solve this issue but maybe you need that too so I mention it here. then i found some new drivers on the creative site. "oh you fool, why didnt you say earlier that you're using old drivers?" someone might say but these drivers dont work or more specifically, its setup routine sux. it quits with "an error occurred". wow cool... but it appears as it unpacks the driver to c:\program files\creative\jukebox3 or something (note, i have a zen and not a jb3...) so I uninstalled everything, rebooted and told the device manager manually to get the drivers from that location. now it works.
freezes: it took me many, many hours to search the internet, but i found absolutely nothing. sure i'm using the latest drivers (yea they actually work), put the card in slot3 and stuff. then i found a post on this board that mentioned that this guy's audigy had a heat problem. it became too hot and hung. hmm. i have 2x 2cm fans sucking heat out of the box through the radiator of my water cooling so heat is actually mostly get rid of through water and whatever else produces heat (harddisc, video card ram etc) is cooled by some really strong air flow. so wth, this card has worked for almost 2 years in my old box. so i opened the case and saw that air circulation around the audigy was impossible as its sandwitched by two other cards. those parts that i was able to touch were not that hot but i dont know how hot the main chip became and i have no clue why a sound card can become too hot from playing an mp3... anyway, i have left my case open and since then i havent had any freezes. now i also know why the freezes suddenly appeared and not since after i setup my box 3 months ago: it was open until i had cut a hole for the radiator...
oh yea, its good that my expensi've creative stuff works and that it was not creative's fault but that of a moron of a user. now honestly, how is an average user supposed to get their product working when the knowledge base is totally outdated and gives advice such as "update your bios, get the latest drivers and dont put your card into the microwave", when mods in this forum give advice like the knowledge base and the driver is not even installable? creative products are not bad at all, they're not cheap at all too. but the support page is absolutely not informati've and the knowledgebase does not give solutions to known issues. i was never ever able to find anything useful there and i'm really really not an average user but a very experienced one. not everyone wants to use a pre-installed dell box with el-cheapo components. i like to put my own high-end rig together and things must be pushed to the limit BUT still be absolutely rock solid. let me list my recent experience with creative products during the past 2 years:
-) bought an inspire 6. surround system and even replaced my audigy with version 2 for it. but unfortunately the subwoofer had a problem. it randomly made a popping noise which was so loud that it pushed your adrenaline level to that of a base jumper. i then found out that the whole batch had some faulty component. at least i got a replacement within a week, so i thought "yea, great support".
-) bought a jukebox zen, 20gb with firewire. it worked great for almost a year. then it died. when i switched it on, only the creative logo appeared, thats it. recovery mode was inaccessible too. it took me 2 months to convince the support lady to let me return this junk. first they sent me a new adapter because maybe it was damaged and the battery was low and therefore it didnt work anymore... then i was told, ok you can have a new one but we dont have firewire versions in stock anymore. you can have a usb one now or you wait until we get the firewire zen again. i said wtf, you produce this so why dont you have them in stock? and the usb version is sure not an equivalent to my firewire player. woot after 2 months i got a new mp3 player... had to rip 250 cds again (i really prefer having originals) and copy them to the player, but ok, i'm happy again. no, i'm not. this one doesnt work properly either. everytime i dont use the player for more than 24 hours i have to rebuild the database and scan the harddisc. that takes about 0 minutes for like 3000 songs!! grr... but i didnt want to argue with the tech support about that, i can li've with that. maybe i can flash to an older bios if i find one somewhere. from what i read somewhere it is caused by the zen going from hibernate into "off power" mode and then it forgets a few things.
and now i had the two issues described above and had to find a solution myself because the support pages dont help at all. sure you can say i should have thought of a heat problem but all important components are watercooled (even the north bridge) and i had some good airflow in general, but not around the sound card. and who knows that the audigy is that sensiti've to heat and that a sound card even gets hot at all. i've never heard of sound card cooling... i'm not that disappointed about the quality of the hardware because it is ok imo, but with the horrible lack of quality of the support and the buggy driver installation. hey, you get free advice by your customers, think about that. they tell you by themselves what the problem is and what they think may cause it. sure many posts are just flames but you should take ppl here more seriously. and if other manufacturers are to blame then put a list together like: msi k8n neo2 platinum - in this case upgrade to bios .2 or in that case install this or turn on/off that.
alright, i hope anyone can use this information. sorry for the length but i wanted to describe things as precisely as necessary. cheers from austria.

  • Mauled by leopard - serious problems - can anyone solev this?

I installed leopard on my powerbook G4 - encountered no problems whatsoever. So I decided to install on the G5 Quad as well. All seemed to go well. Then I tried to begin working in Final Cut Pro with the raid array and kept getting the multilingual shut down instruction. After a lot of investigation it appears that the sonnet card is not compatible with leopard on non-intel macs. So - no problem I thought (HA!) I can work with tiger for now. Afterall, I have been working with it for all this time....
I tried to install from my Tiger installation disc - no way! As soon as the disc begins to be read I get a kernel crash. I have all my data backed up so I decided to erase the G5 disc and then install from the tiger disc - now this i do not understand - I STILL get the kernel crash. I tested the tiger installation disc in the G4 - it appeared to allow installation (explain that one!) onto an external firewire disc. So then I tried starting the G5 in target mode and installing from the G4. An hour goes by, the installation seems to be working.... eventually I restart the G5 STILL there is a kernel crash.
I can't remember exactly how I managed to set the start up disc to be another external firewire with 10.4.10 on it but I did and guess what the G5 starts from it, but I do not have any of my applications on there - a bit of a problem!
Anyway to cut a very long story short I got most of my applications back on there and came to restart.... the chime sounds then a black screen with what I assume is unix stuff saying there is no master password. While I am trying to work out just what to do the fan goes into overdrive and I feel compelled to shut down.
Currenty I am trying to restore the external firewire disc to the G5 internal hoping I can at least start the computer again.
So does anyone really know what happens when leopard is installed? it seems to have affected my logic board or something - I'm not a computer technician -
Is there any way to get a really really clean disc that will allow me to reinstall tiger on the G5 from the installation DVD?
It seems to me that Apple really ought to be able to provide a way to get back to tiger after people have been mauled by leopard. There are so many peole having really serious probems with leopard having messed their machines up because it alters things so deeply.
There have been some posts suggesting a bad batch of DVDs. I noted that the leopard install DVD appears to be dual layer. (it has more than 6Gb on it) Now my G4 dvd drive does not support dual layer DVDs but the install disc worked fine - does this mean some fancy tricks with the DVD itself that somehow make it work in drives that 'should' not support it?
Anyway... ANYONE with ANY suggestions as to how to resolve my (admittedly) complex problem will be much appreciated.
    thanks

    Some things to try...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
I think we can get Screen Sharing working also.

WARNING! USING SUPERDUPER TO CLONE FROM AN HDD TO AN SSD MIGHT SERIOUSLY DAMAGE THE HEALTH OF YOUR SSD!
This is the new thread which I referred to when replying to:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2274972&start=0&tstart=0
I used SuperDuper to clone from a VelociRaptor 300GB HDD to an OCZ Agility EX SLC SSD, with disastrous results.
To save me the time of rewriting all the events please refer to the following emails and online submissions:
    (Biltan-Wales - 21 Dec 2009 - 11.02 GMT):-
After reading several very favourable product reviews of the above SSD, I have just purchased one from Aria Technology Ltd., to use as a boot drive for my (early 2009) 8-Core 2.93GHz Intel Xeon Nehalem desktop workstation.
Also, prior to purchase of an OCZ SSD, I posted a question on Apple's Discussions' Forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2263023&tstart=0
From the response to this, and from reading several other threads regarding SSDs, I found that several Mac Pro owners are using OCZ SSDs as boot drives, and in some cases employing up to 3 of them.
I received my Agility EX from Aria on 16th. December, and yesterday afternoon I decided to set up my boot drive and 4 drive RAID 0, as described in: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2263023&tstart=0
First of all I used SuperDuper to clone from my VelociRaptor 300GB drive in Bay 1, to my original Apple (WD) 640GB drive in Bay 2.
Then I removed the original Apple drive, and installed it in an ONNTO dataTale TQ-M12H external single enclosure, using a Firewire 800 interface connection. Next I selected this as my boot drive to check it would boot OK, restarted my system, and there was no problem.
So my next step was to install the Agility EX, and another 3 VelociRaptor 300GB drives, in the Mac pro workstation.
First, I reselected VelociRaptor 1 as my boot drive, so that I could use SuperDuper to clone to the Agility EX.
The Agility EX was installed in the lower of the 2 optical bays, and was connected to the pre-wired SATA and power cable, and the VelociRaptors were placed in hard drive bays 2, 3, and 4.
I then started up the Mac Pro, and there were 4 message boxes on the desktop, requesting that the drives should be initialised. So then I used Disk Utility to initialise the 4 drives. The SSD was named "Agility EX Boot", and the others "VelociRaptor 2", VelociRaptor 3, and VelociRaptor 4". The Mac system accepted all 4, and mounted desk top icons for each drive. I cannot remember the exact figure, but the Agility EX was listed as approx. 64GB in Disk Utility after its initialisation. All 4 VelociRaptors are shown as 300.07GB. All drives were formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
The next stage was to use SuperDuper to clone from VelociRaptor 1 to the Agility EX Boot drive.
Everything was fine until 28.00GB had been copied, and then nothing more would copy. The total to be cloned was just under 30GB, which should not have been a problem with a SSD disk capacity of approx. 64GB, but everything was frozen at that point - exactly 28.00GB!
Eventually, my only option was to stop the process, and quit Super Duper.
Then I restarted the system to try again, but this is where there is a real problem now!
My system does not recognise the Agility EX at all now! Also, it is no longer listed in Disk Utility!
The system does not even acknowledge its existence! It is not even shown on the desktop at start-up, whereas I thought that perhaps there might have been another message box requesting that it should be reinitialised.
I tried disconnecting and reconnecting everything - all drives, interface connections, power cables etc., but to no avail!
This morning I tried this again, but still I cannot get my system to even acknowledge the Agility EX, let alone list it!
So at the moment I am still using VelociRaptor 1 as my boot drive, and, in fact, as my main drive, because I am reluctant to use it with the 3 other VelociRaptors as a 4 drive RAID 0 set up until I get this problem with the Agility EX resolved.
    (OCZ - 22 Dec 2009 - 18.29 GMT):-
Cloning from a HDD to an SSD is very problematic. I strongly recommend against doing this. Instead you will want to just install normally onto the SSD. You can clone from SSD to SSD, or from HDD to HDD, but going from one to the other can cause issues.
Try disconnecting the drive from the computer for an hour or so. This will allow all power in the drive to fully discharge. This is a way of resetting the drive that can usually recover the drive. Then plug the drive back in. Does the drive show up again?
If so, delete the partition on the drive, then create a new partition and then install the OS onto it clean rather than clone the OS onto the drive. That should resolve the issues you are having.
    (Biltan-Wales - 23 Dec 2009 - 16.19 GMT):-
    Thank you for your advice.
I have now disconnected the Agility EX SSD, and removed it from my Mac Pro's lower optical bay.
As Christmas is imminent, and I will not be using my system very much over the next few days, I will leave the drive for 4 to 5 days to allow ample time for all the power to discharge.
Then I will reconnect it, and I will let you know whether or not the drive is recognised by my system.
I was not aware that cloning from a HDD to an SSD could be problematic. Several threads on the Apple Support Discussion Forum have recommended using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner for this purpose. SuperDuper is the preferred option of most Forum members, whereas Lloyd Chambers (diglloyd.com), author of "macperformanceguide.com", uses Carbon Copy Cloner to clone his HDD boot drives to his Intel and Crucial SSDs.
After the Agility EX had been set up as my system boot drive, my intention was to use SuperDuper to clone from it to my original Apple (WD) HDD, now in an external enclosure with Firewire 800 interface, and then use SuperDuper's Smart Update for regular backups, so that I always had an up to date spare boot drive for the OS and applications.
The current VelociRaptor 1 boot drive would then be erased, and I would then use the Mac OS Disk Utility to create a 4 drive software RAID ) with the other 3 VelociRaptors, and this would be backed up using Time Machine to my existing WD My Book Studio Edition II 2TB External Hard Drive.
Please correct me if I have misunderstood your advice, but are you saying that I should only use another SSD, and not my original Apple (WD) HDD, as my back-up external boot drive? I don't know of any other Mac users who are using SSDs for that purpose, possibly because of the prohibitive cost of doing so.
I am more than happy to follow your advice to reinstall the Mac OS and my applications cleanly onto the Agility EX, and, in fact, I did exactly that with my first VelociRaptor HDD, before I had SuperDuper. However, that would still leave me with the problem of how to set up and maintain an external back-up system boot drive, without incurring the expense of another SSD. Any suggestions please?
Anyway the most important matter is the existing problem, and I am hoping that following your advice will resolve this.
I will contact you again early next week. In the meantime have a very enjoyable Christmas!
    (OCZ - 24 Dec 2009 - 00.25 GMT):-
If the image is of an HDD and that image is then cloned onto an SSD that does tend to be problematic. I do not recommend doing this, as an image of the HDD somewhat regularly does fail to copy onto an SSD and still remain functional or fast.
You can store the image file on any sort of drive. Storing the image file is fine, as that is just a digital file, so the storage medium doesn't matter. Its actually applying that image to a drive is where the problems often occur.
You can image from a HDD to a HDD just fine, or an SSD to an SSD just fine, but going from one to the other is problematic enough that I recommend not doing this. Sometimes it works just fine, but other times it can fail catastrophically to the point of even bricking the drive. To error on the side of caution I recommend just going a clean install on the new SSD.
Once you have that clean install done you can then take an image of that SSD and image on to other SSD's, or store the image on a HDD for backup purposes.
    (Biltan-Wales - 29 Dec 2009 - 13.16 GMT)
Thank you for your last email.
Further to your previous email, and my reply of 23/12/2009. this morning I reconnected the Agility EX SSD.
However, unfortunately, the drive has not showed up again on my system. There is no icon for it on the desktop, nor is it listed in Disk utility.
When I checked Serial-ATAS in my Mac Pro's System Profiler, all 6 Intel ICH10 AHCI are listed in the Serial-ATA Device Tree, but, whereas all my other drives are sub-listed, there is nothing underneath the ICH10 AHCI for the lower optical bay.
As the drive has had 6 days to discharge and reset, it would appear that it has not recovered.
Where do I go from here?
I am still awaiting a reply from OCZ, but that is not surprising, because of the different time zones and the Christmas?New Year holiday period.
In the meantime does anybody else have any ideas, please?

    Hi thanon,
"So the SSD is not visible, not even in disk utility, even after a restart ?":-
    No.
"Check the log of SuperDuper (Window-Show Log); warnings are in red, I think.":-
This is a copy of the log, but it only refers to the original Mac (WD) drive as the Target Volume and it only lists the last Smart Update. There is no record of the original cloning to the same drive on 21st. December, nor of the interim Smart Updates. There is no record logged at all for the OCZ Agility EX SSD, despite the unsuccessful cloning attempt on 21st. December:-
