Serious graphics glitches on MBP17" - opinions please!

I am going to take my laptop in to a store to get a genius to run some hardware tests, but in the meantime I'd like to know if there's anything I can do to diagnose this for myself.
I have bought a 17" MacBook Pro from the refurb stire - it's the most recent model, 2.4GHz Intelk Core i7 with 16GB of Ram and plenty of HD space.
This is the kind of think that happens, reaonably frequently:

Given that this is a refurb Mac purchase, I wonder if it's possible to get the history of this machine at all, perhaps find out if this was the fault that was reported before?
I assume that, given it's a refurb unit, I can't exchange at an Apple store and will have to hope that a similar unit is available in the refurnb stock. But given this is discontinued stock, what would happen if a replacement wasn't available? Full refund, I guess?
Anyway, thoughts appreciated

Any thoughts on this? Problem has gone away for a day or so, not sure what wiull trigger it again, but that's the nature of intermittent faults, I guess

  • T400 - serious graphical glitches while Hardware Virtualization is turned on in the BIOS.

While hardware virtualization is enabled in my T400, I'm getting serious graphical glitches (garbled graphics). This happens both when outputting to the T400's monitor or when outputting to an external display.
I actually don't have to do anything special to get the garbling to start - just booting Windows 7 and using it regularly will make it start to glitch.
    Help please.

Thank you for that link, it was very helpful.
The 'solution' of course, was far from satisfying (I'm experiencing Type B visual corruption). Especially considering the model I'm using is preconfigured - Lenovo shipped it with a 2GB+1GB DIMM.
It boggles my mind that Lenovo uses a configuration that is not fully compatible with the processor.
I don't find it so odd, most users will never use the virtualization feature.  I personally have 3gb in my T500 and have used H-V with the ATI chipset and it works as it should, I've tried it with the Intel GPU and it is garbage   but then again.. the intel 4500 is kinda garbage..

  • Premiere Pro CS6 playback issues & graphics glitches

    Hi everyone.
For a few days now (not sure whether it's been like this since the latest update) I have been experiencing serious playback issues and graphics glitches with Premiere Pro CS6. I'm on a Macbook Pro Retina.
Please see attached screenshot for reference. What happens is, I start Premiere - it works fine for a few minutes, but at some point things start to go wrong. The program monitor doesn't show anything anymore, even though the playhead is moving and I get audio.
Sometimes, either the program monitor or the source monitor displays some other part of the Premiere UI or even OSX Finder windows/ other applications like safari. What you are seing in the screenshot is a glitch showing a part of the source window within the program window.
Once this happens, there's nothing I can do but to restart Premiere.
Does anyone else have these kinds of issues?
Premiere is becoming unusable for me at the moment, which is a serious issue since this is my primary NLE.
What also happens from time to time is the following: i start up my project, and once i do anything like moving the playhead, i receive the following error message "a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premiere Pro to shut down" which then does exactly what it says. this will happen repeateadly until i restart my computer.
    Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to the forum.
Make sure you have the latest driver for your video card, and if you're using hardware mercury playback, then make sure you have the latest CUDA drivers from nvidia.  If that doesn't work, then please answer the questions here as completely as you can:

  • Unusable system (graphical glitches and more)

Sorry for the quite unspecific title, but I'm not really sure how to describe this problem...
So, I came back from a threeweek long vacation yesterday and did a "pacman -Syu". Everything went smooth and there was nothing on the Arch news or the forum that seemed serious to me, so I thought everything was good.
After booting today, I experience pretty bad graphical glitches which make the system unusable. urxvtc (and lxterminal) don't even start anymore, one of my conkys hogs a core at 100% and chromium and gvim look like this:
    Screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/jKnZUHs.png
Sakura, xterm, dwb, firefox and thunderbird seem to work fine, as far as I can tell. Haven't really tested things in deep, but there's nothing obvious. Logs (dmesg or journalctl) also look plain to me, but I can post them anyway if necessary.
pacman.log is here. As you can see, I tried downgrading some packages that seemed relevant to me, but no success so far.

  • Crashes, graphics glitches, and more crashes when editing video clips

Can't for the life of me figure out why PE keeps crashing on me, so I'm here for help.
My system consists of a i7-970 hexacore, 6GB ram, 1x 500GB os drive, 3x500gb raid 0 drives (this is where my video clips are stored), 2x GeForce GTX460 video cards.
OS is Windows 7 Profressional 64 bit.
The video files I work with are generally in the 50-200GB size.
A little background - the videos that I am working with are recordings from Battlefield Bad Company 2 that I have recorded with some capture software called Dxtory.
I record at 1920x1080 at 60 FPS to avi files.  The avi files are using the "xtor" codec (Dxtory's own codec)
    [ISFT]    DxtoryCore ver2.0.0.101
[ISRC]    Video:YUV420 Audio:Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
Audio is PCM 192000Hz recorded in stereo.
Let me start by saying I have not had trouble with this before until I started recording the videos at 60 FPS.  30 FPS worked ok (some crashes here and there, but they were bearable), but the frequent crashes started happening when I started working with the 60 FPS videos, done mainly so I could play around with slowing the clips down, etc.
Sometimes I can open and edit clips just fine.
Recently, a project that I'm working on is crashing when I try putting two different clips from different files together on the time line.  I managed to get it to work once, and saved the project after that.  Then, PE crashed randomly and when trying to reopen the project, it just crashes and won't let me get any further.
I should mention the graphics glitches as well - occasionally (especially when previewing video clips before adding them to the timeline) after I close the preview window, the graphics in PE will glitch out, causing random lines to appear in certain areas, graphics to stack on top of eachother and freeze up, and sometimes I can click on the "play" button in the main project window and hear everything start playing, but the graphics are completely screwed up to the point where I can't view the video or hit the pause button.
All of my computer hardware is fine, all drivers, and PE, are up to date.
Can someone please help me figure out what is going on?  I'll be happy to provide any more information that might help out.

The most likely issue is the codec that your program is using the create your video. It's apparently not compatible with Premiere Elements.
This often happens also when people try to record their on-screen video with FRAPS.
You'll see lots of discussions on this issue in the Premiere Pro forum. However, it's even more pronounced in Premiere Elements, which is designed to work almost exclusively with camcorder video.
Some video programs are a little more versatile with this type of video. Some people have found Corell's Video Studio better at handling these non-traditonal formats.
But I did a Google search on Dxtory editing and couldn't find any information on it.
Sorry I can't offer a solution. But I can pretty much assure you that Premiere Elements isn't it. sorry.

  • Strange graphical glitch on 55TL515

I'm getting a strange graphical glitch occasionally on my 55TL515.  When the glitch appears, it will reoccur every 20 seconds or so.  I've discovered one way to make this disappear temporarily, but I'd like a permanent fix.  Let me describe my living room setup for a second...
I currently have the TV connected by itself to one outlet.  The second socket is currently empty.
In another outlet, I have a filled power bar plugged in.  The power bar contains my stereo, xbox, pc, macbook, external hdd, and router.
When the glitch appears, if I unplug this power bar and reconnect it, the glitch disappears.  I don't understand why this is.  They aren't even in the same outlet (they used to be, until i started messing around with this problem).  I've tested different HDMI cords, all of the HDMI inputs, and have seen this glitch when using both my pc and my xbox on this tv.
Can anyone provide a possible solution to this?  I don't want to keep everything unplugged as I use them all frequently.  Could it be the power bar?  Is it actually a problem with the tv?  Please take a look at this youtube video and see what you think.  Thanks.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehR4cALs8co&feature=youtu.be

I get the same issue...typically this happens if I connect my laptop through a VGA cable.  I've tried everything from changing my video card settings(resolution, refresh rate, etc...) but I get the same exact graphical glitch.  Any luck on figuring this out?
Also, do you ever get thin lines that roll/move up the screen?  I would get those occasionally and it had something to do with the digital switching inside the laptop power supply(the laptop power supply was on the same outlet) and was causing this problem so moving it to another power outlet or circuit breaker helped, but I still get the graphical glitch you have.

  • Equium U400 graphical glitch Windows Vista

    Hello all,
I-ve recently purchased the abovementioned machine and I would have been very happy with it were it not for the graphical glitch. It usually appears after a couple of minutes of work and it scrambles the colors, making it look pretty screwy (IE background for example is for some reason blue-green instead of white, which makes it annoying to work with. There are also artifacts and so on. I have downloaded the latest drivers from this site. I-m running vista home 32bit
    please help.

    Hello
Is your notebook preinstalled with Toshiba recovery image (factory settings)?
Can you test it please with external display? It will be interesting to see how it looks there?
I just hope on external display is everything OK.
Please post the result and we can continue the discussion.

  • [Solved] Catalyst graphical glitches with dual head setup

Hello all, having a weird issue with my dual monitor setup where graphical glitches make my primary monitor completely unusable. The Tear Free feature of the proprietary catalyst driver is what seems to be causing it:
    Tear Free enabled:
    Tear Free disabled:
I can safely enable it with one monitor disabled also. The issue is that without Tear Free enabled, I'm experiencing some serious screen tearing when watching videos and playing games.
My video card is the XFX HD 7970 Double D and I'm using the latest version of catalyst (14.4), installed from Vi0L0's repo. The monitors are the same model with the same specs (1920x1200 @60Hz). I definitely used to be able to use Tear Free with my dual head setup at most a month ago, so some update at some point must have broken it. I temporarily switched back to the open source driver before I had found Tear Free to be the culprit and the performance is still hardly comparable.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Downgrading catalyst to 14.3 seems to have done the job. Thanks for the suggestion, marking as solved.

  • IMac (24" Aluminium, Mid 2008) Freezing and Graphical Glitches

    Hi all,
I'm having to write this on my MacBook as my iMac developed serious problems yesterday evening. Nothing new has been installed recently, and I was just listening to music on iTunes when I noticed that my iMac seemed to have frozen, although music was still playing. After the song finished it switched to the next track, but I could not control anything. The screen developed graphical glitches in the form of a lot of speckles. All I could do was hold in the button on the back and turn it off.
I've tried turning it on a few times today and the problem still persists. I've tried resetting the PRAM but that hasn't fixed it. Myself and my housemate seem to think it's a graphics card issue (NVidia GeForce 8800GS), but the problem doesn't occur when booted in Safe Mode and also doesn't occur when in Windows XP under boot camp. My iMac is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, and I have no idea why this has suddenly happened. I swear this has happened once before, but I think the PRAM reset was what I did back then and it worked.
A few weeks ago I upgraded the iMac from 2GB RAM to 4GB RAM but it's been absolutly fine until now. Could a RAM issue be to blame for this, and could it take so long to suddenly emerge?
Thanks in advance for and help or insight anyone could offer. I know there are a lot of posts about this but I know some symptoms are slightly different so I wanted this post to be specific to my case.

+I guess the big question is whether the iMac dvi port is output and input.+
Output only on that model iMac. You'd best borrow a real monitor for initial configuration of the Mini. Once it is configured and you've turned on Screen Sharing, you can access the Mini remotely from the iMac.

  • Graphic Glitch - MacBook Pro, 15-inch, mid 2010

    Hey everyone,
    I have a MBP 15" mid 2010
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256 MB
    HDD1 OCZ-VERTEX2  SSD 120GB
HHD2 (replacing optical drive) Seagate Momentus 2.5 inch XT ST95005620AS 500GB
I have a graphical glitch quite often, which consists of some on screen corruption that lasts for a few milliseconds - enough for me to see it, but rarely enough for me to actually take a screenshot of it. Last week I managed to finally take a screenshot of it, which is great, as I can finally show that I'm not crazy. Please see below.
I pretty much assume it will be a problem with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M (which is usually in use all the time, since I use an external screen in addition to my mbp 15" one).
Now, because this is not a crash event I doubt there'll be any log about it (but I'm all ears).
Regarding it's consistency and frequency it's very hard to say... it does happen a lot throughout the day. I have tried not running programmes that I feel interact with graphics a lot (F.lux and gfxCardStatus) but to no avail.
Anyone has any experience with this or some advice for me?
    Thanks!

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
    Good luck,

  • 1st gen Mac Pro graphics glitches and unresponsive

I'm not sure if this is related to
    a) Snow Leopard
    b) Safari 5
    c) something else
but after recent updates I get graphics glitches, such as in Safari, lines across the browser window, not on particular content, it might be pure HTML (the old kind) and can be flash, or multimedia...
When using Final Cut (6) I get some weird graphics related errors from time to time, and after hours of editing suddenly my computer stops, becomes "frozen" (I have the clock in the menu bar set to show seconds and they stop) I have to do a hard-reboot to get anything back.
And the thing that happened now, which makes me post this thread is I was doing some web development, while watching some iTunes U movies, suddenly I had green graphical artifacts over the screen(s) and the computer froze.
Is anyone else out there experiencing this, perhaps found the source of the problem ?
My console reports 2 things that doesn't seem too "serious" TimeMachine finished doing a backup successfully and mDNSresponder got a "Bad DDNS browsing domain: (unknown)" just before the latest break down.

Sorry you're having this issue. It is a common issue and I have it as well. I ended up replacing my card which fixed the problem but, after 6 months, the problem is back.
There is something nasty with the Mac Pro's and graphic cards it seems. My first card was a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT and now I'm having trouble with the ATI Radeon HD 2600.
I'm trying to get to the bottom of the problem... no luck so far... I'm not interested in replacing the card if it's going to happen again 6 months down the road and I'm not interested in buying a new computer either.
    Any luck with your problem?
    Saki

hello, this looks like an issue with hardware acceleration - please try [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL|updating your graphics driver]], or in case this doesn't solve the issue or there is no new version available at the moment, disable hardware acceleration in ''firefox > options > advanced > general''.

  • Ipad air lagging and graphic glitching

Ipad air lagging while playing games like temple run and candy crush, the graphic seems like glitching and the moving animation so slow compare to previous edition,,,,idk wht cause tis problem and now im waiting for new ios update hope it will fix it! Dissapointed.

I took it to genius bar and they replaced it with a new Ipad Air after getting them agreed to the graphic glitch. A more accurate description is the graphics are too jerky (as in not smooth). They agreed after running and comparing the same game (minion rush) in a new Ipad Air side-by-side. And the replaced Ipad Air began the same issue only after I got home. It came with 7.0.4 pre-installed, so there's no way I can know if it's the new iOS issue with Ipad Air or not.
I've compared it against other devices including GS4, note 8, Iphone 5s and even Ipad 3 and 4, where both Minion rush and gold star run smoothly. I tried to install other high graphic games and began to notice the problem is limited to these 2 apps only. Asphalt 8 graphics is too jerky itselfs to give it a real feel animation, so it's hard to judge in it. I'm wondering if it's just the app problems although both of them are claimed to be compatible with Ipad Air on their app store pages. But if it's really a universal problem with the app, I shouldn't be the only one Ipad Air owner facing it. There should be reports/complaints in forums/app comment boxes, shouldn't it?
If any of you own an Ipad Air too, can you please try to install these 2 games and reply me back coz I need to know whether this is a hardware problem requiring replacement or not.
Golf Star is most obvious when the power gauge moves up/down when u swing. You can compare it against any other later devices (apple or android)
It's most prominent in Minion Rush, from the video that comes on the very first run to throughout game play. The graphic is not smooth and too jerky to the point that even avoiding obstacles becomes too hard.
Please include your Ipad model and iOS too when you report back.
    Thank you

  • 3D graphics glitches/artifacts

I've noticed a very weird problem in certain 3D applications. I first noticed it when playing Warcraft 3. In certain scenery, single pixels (usually yellow) will flash briefly then go away. Almost like static. Once it starts happening, two or three will pop up every few seconds so it's very difficult to detect normally.
Figuring it was probably just the game, I fired up Quake 3 and after a bit I noticed the same thing. Then I tried Diablo 2 and again noticed the same thing (especially after entering a cave or something with dark corners - I see them quite a bit more in there).
At this point, I was pretty sure it was either a defect in the video card or perhaps the video card was over heating and producing artifacts. But I went ahead and tried two other games, Ghost Recon and Doom3 (demo) and I couldn't get either one of them to show any errors. Even after cranking up the detail options, neither of them showed the slightest hint of problems. I'd roam around for a bit in Doom3 then exit out, go in to Quake3, stick my nose up against the display and sure enough I'd see one or two pixels flickering randomly. Go back into Recon or Doom and nada.
The problem also doesn't show up outside of 3D apps - i.e, like on the desktop or anything.
So I'm wondering - has anyone else noticed this sort of thing before? Could it be a driver issue, or an indication of a more serious hardware failure? Another thought occurred to me too - I'm using the ATI Displays (4.5.6 ) preferences panel from ATI. And although I notice the problem with or without and OpenGL overrides for those games, could that be what's buggering things up? My impression was that ATI Displays didn't replace the OS X drivers but allowed you to configure them more.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

this is why I hate leopard because graphics problems arrose with outside applications, especially when I am trying to play a game. this is annoying, and once one graphic glitch occurs, I get tons of others! It bugs me soo much. Apple needs to work this out before I go insane from distoritions and graphics disappearing and getting stretched

  • Hd6850 graphics glitch

    Hi
I'm starting to get graphics glitches with my card (under 1 year old). For example some textures in BF3 appear to have white dots over them (but others seem fine). I have never overclocked my card and it is running from a 650w powersupply. I installed speccy to check the temp and they average 45-55c when not gaming, in game they go from 64-78 on average with highest reached at around 83c.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be - please ask if you require further info
notice it is only inside the cockpit, and it does seem to improve if I increase the post AA settings in game
    regards

Re the above post - sorry!

    More explanation on problem
Card seems to be running very hot. I installed furmark last night and ran it for about 15 secs before the card reached 96c. The fan is set to auto and always seems to be on about 50-60% when browsing web and jumps to 80% when gaming.
Games seem to have lost FPS and texture issues as shown in first post - No crashes though
Hope this is a little more helpful
