Ipod is sad face, Won't go to disk mode, Won't Charge, Won't restart, Laptop DOES NOT recognize Ipod plugged in.

    My brother is havign some serious iPod problems. A while ago the battery died after having it for about 2 years. He just had the battery replaced, it will atleast bootup now, but it wont get passed the Apple logo. I can get it to boot into Disk Mode, then reset it, but it still wont get passed the Apple logo.     1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
    Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
    Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
    Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored.     A. Diagnostic mode solution
    If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
    You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
    Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
    iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
    The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
    iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
    iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
    You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW".     Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
    I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
    If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod.     Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case.   • Serious iPod problem (iPod keeps resetting)

    I've had my iPod for almost 2 years and until now everything worked fine. i listen to it on average 1 hr each day, and until 2 days ago battery seemed fine (I would recharge it each week, though it would be only half empty).
    So 2 days ago I was listening to music, tried to go forward and all of a sudden it stopped playing music, it was just frozen. I reset it and it came back with a "sad" iPod icon. Ocassionaly it would end up with the icon as if the battery is dead. I reset it a few more times and mostlt I got the same "sad" icon and only a few times the battery icon.
    I than tried to hook it up to my computer via USB and it would just reset and PC/iTunes would not see it.
    Since I've had it for 2 years I thought maybe the battery has gone bad (but does it happen just like that without any signs?) so I tried to charge itbut when I connect it to charger it keeps resetting.
    I than tried to force it into disc mode and that worked but as soon as I connected it to my computer it would reset. Even when I tried to charge it in disc mode it would reset after a few secunds.
    So, if left alone it is in off mode, but if I push any button it starts up, and eventually shows the sad iPod icon. If plugged into the charger or PC it keeps resetting.
    I have no way to get into it and update the iTunes, or access iPod. Has anyone seen this? Does is sound like a battery or is it something worse? I am out of warranty and would not want to spend too much money fixing it since it probably does not worth much, though i wish I could save my iTunes collection...

    Hey guys, I'm having a similar problem though a slight variation on a theme. maybe you can help me out.
    I have a 4th generation iPod (20 Gig) and it told me my ipod battery had died, so i plugged it into my computer to charge. It started out showing me the large symbol of the battery with the lightening bolt until there was enough to power the iPod so that it could run with iTunes. Except once it finally had enough power and interacted with iTunes it went into a black and white mode instead of the normal color mode and the the battery icon up in the top right corner was black with the lightening bolt. I got the normal "do not disconnect" message except that was black and grey as well.
    I figured i'd update my ipod as it was still charging and added a new playlist and it appeared to take the music, but when I unplugged the ipod it showed me the icon of the folder with the exclamation point and gave me the address http://www.apple.com/support/ipod. Since i didn't have time then i reset it and then plugged it in via a car charger to see if charging it would fix the problem. Unfortunately, when I unplugged it from the computer to take to the car and reset it, it started rebooting over and over. I was able to force it into disc mode so that it would continue to charge without wasting so much battery rebooting (it didn't reboot in disc mode) and continued to work on it when i got home.
    At home i tried every fix they have listed on the site and in my ipod handbook and nothing has worked. I have reset, restored twice, and charged the battery. The weird thing is that it
    1) is recognized by itunes
    2) just turns off if i try to use the charger
    3) appears to be able to download music to it but makes a clicking noise
    4) since it doesn't recognize the charger I can't finish the restore process
    5) still gives me the folder icon when it tries to turn on
    PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN!
    If you can think of anything i can do to fix this I will be so appreciative.

  • SERIOUS IPOD PROBLEM! SCREEN! :(

    My iPod has worked fine so far. 5G, 30GB iPod White. Until today the screen has froze. It has lines that appear on your laptop if you pushed it on the back. Colored lines stretched accross the screen. I tried to reset, but it is the actual screen that has problems. I'm going to try to let it run out of battery power. PLEASE HELP!
    It seems to have a type of glare, without the sun, of course. I need serious help, should i just send it to Apple? it has a one year warranty!

    I'd like to know if you resolved this problem or not. My daughters iPod just started having this exact problem. The iPod freezes and the screen is full of colored lines.
    You can do a reset and the iPod returns to normal only to freeze again later. This morning alone it's frozen 4 times within about 3 hours.

    a couple of months ago, my iPod video 30G suddenly started acting strange. I am quite sure that the issue is a hardware problem. here it goes:
    when I play a given song, it will either work fine or stop after a random amount of time, which causes the iPod not to freeze, but go into slow-motion, which drains the battery of power.
    when it does this, the iPod sounds like it's trying to retrieve information from the disc, I can both hear and feel it working. (like a scratched cd stopping in a cd-player)
    what I do is that I press 'menu' to get another song, after 5-10 secs I reach the album menu and after selecting another song I have to wait for 20-30 secs before it starts. if that song works the battery will go back to green again; if not, iPod will keep in slow motion with the battery on the very lowest.
    hence, some of the files on my iPod seems to be corrupt. they seem to become corrupt when I transfer them through iTunes, since I can replace them with the same file (by deleting the corrupt files from iPod and then loading it with the same files) which sometimes works, sometimes not.
    subsequently, what I am doing now is that I, when I've charged my iPod with songs from iTunes, have to listen them through, sort out the corrupt ones, and then replacing them, often several times. the files tend to become corrupt in the transferring process and does not depend on the original file quality.
    now, I'd like to have your advice about this. I doubt it's possible to fix it myself, in which case I will have to return it to Apple. however, my warranty ran out this year (by the time it started failing on me I was out travelling and unable to return it).
    is there any other possibility than buying a new one?

    It sounds like most likely your issue is that your iPod's hard drive is messed up somehow. I'm presuming this because you accidentially dropped it, and now it's sounding "scratchy" when connected to your computer...
    Yes, the best thing to do now would be to send it back to Apple. Note that they will probably say that this issue was due to "owner's abuse" of your iPod, so they may not cover for it.
    There are other places which can do this for you, though. For example, try checking out iPod ResQ, or Broken iPods.
    But before you send it off to Apple or someone else, have you tried all those Five R's yet? (linked to in previous poster's post).

    I have a 40gig ipod with click wheel it is about 2-3 years old, out of the blue i went to use it and it came up with an error (folder with that stick thingo telling me to go to the apple site and trouble shoot) now i went though all that stuff and it says i need to restore it, but when i try to do this it comes up with an error 'requested software not avaliable etc.' what do i do?

  • Ipod 4th Generation Scratches/Warranty?

    Hello, my ipod 4th gen got a lot of scratches on the back.  It only has like 7 days of limited 100% warranty left.  I am willing to sell it but someone said they want the scratches on the back of the ipod to be removed, then they will buy it.  Is there some way i can have these scratches removed ir put the warranty to use?  Please help, only 6 days left of warranty, i need to find a way to clean the back or send it in of some sort of excuse.  Any help please.

    The warranty does not cover cosmetic damage.
    I would to to a jeweler or trophy shop. They may be able to polish them out.
    I myself would not be concerned with scratch on the back. Without a case it happens.

  • Many iPod problems in 1 iPod

    Ay
    I have had this 60GB iPod for under a year now and recently it has been acting up. About 3 weeks ago, it began to run slow and freeze up now and then; I didn't think too much of it. One morning I turned my iPod on and that little Unhappy iPod Icon came up. I looked at the reasons/solutions to that problem and did what it suggested. It worked better, but the Unhappy iPod came up the next time. Then, the icon of the Folder and Exclamation Point came up. It showed my iPod was connected once, but didnt transfer anything. When I unplugged it, It flashed a couple of times then it started. It showed 0 memory, no serial number...all 0's. I tried to re-format it with the original instalation disk, but that didnt work. Now it will hold a charge for about 3hours (When fully charged) but all it does is turn on and off and show different error icons before it shuts off again. It also switches to disk mode by itself during the "on and off" period. When i plug it into the computer via USB port(s), the iPod continues going on and off, causing for theses default windows to pop up ever 3 seconds. None of the windows recognize the iPod. Ocassionally, Windows says it is a curupt or damaged. The iPod dosen't recognize it either, and the one time it did, it said it cannot "Mount" the iPod. When i plug the iPod into the wall, it just turns on and off like always. The iPod only stops turning on and off when it is out of battery.
    Please help me out if you can, I dont want to deal with this warranty crap.

    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.

    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes

    If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
    Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
    Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
    Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
    If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
    You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
    Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
    iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
    The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
    iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
    iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
    You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW".     Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
    I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
    If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
    In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery replacement (with pictures)

    Have I tried this myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

  • I have an Ipod Classic, one day he appears without music, now that i want to sync with my itunes an error occur. I download all the new itunes version and ipod software but again error. How do I make it work?

    My ipod classic, have these problem:
    One day I find out that all the music was completely gone, I always charged the ipod on Ihome.
    So, I connect the ipod to my computer to sync the music, but mi computer recognize the ipod as a memory device. so delete itunes from my computer, following some support guides that i found in the mac support web. Again, it didnt work. The itunes doesnt detect it.
    then I try to sync on a macbook, then it told it was corrupted i should restore th ipod, i try it but this could not be done... cause an error occur.
    How I can restore my ipod...

    Does both your Windows and Macbook iTunes have the same library of songs?
    if it  does then, much easier to proceed, else try to load the Macbook with the same library as Windows.
    Note that only one of the Macbook USB port is good for iPod Classic, the other is too slow and may cause timeout, and I would suggest disconnect all other USB devices, while you Restore or Sync the iPod Classic.
    Connect the iPod to the Mac, (if iTunes launch, please close it back.)
    Use Disk Utility -> select the iPod Device->First Aid->Repair (use option FAT32)
    After the Repair complete, eject the iPod.
    Connect back to the Mac
    When iTunes launch, Restore the iPod when Prompted, (use FAT32)
    Sync your library.

  • Ipod touch 4 days old - not being recognised now on apple mac.  What is going on?

    I am totally disappointed with this Ipod.  I had it all set up a few days ago, which we had to do at home ourselves due to requiring our current passwords etc.   Today it is not recognised on the Apple Mac and the Apple ID cannot be found - it took too long to find it. The Itunes server is not recognised and for some reason I cannot find new updates for either product.  They both appear to be up to date.  Waste of my time.  I have spent hours trying to find out what is wrong with it,   I bought this in Perth at the only Apple Store last Saturday.  I have purchased itunes music and this was successfully downloaded to mu ipod a few days ago.  Last night I downloaded my CD's to the itunes library and haven't been able to put these onto my Ipod.  What is going on?????  I though Apple was a fairly straight forward reliable brand of product.  Your support page is not helping me at present.

    I have contacted Apple support on the above issues and will have to follow it up with them as it is more involved than what I have listed. Our Apple Mac laptop is not downloading the updates for software.  The iTunes site does not recognise the "server" (comes up with a message saying this) and apparently this is a known problem.  The Mac needs to have a more current iTunes update but as the computer won't install the updates (goes through all the motions from the software update on the apple icon at top right hand corner of page) , I can't use my iPod on the computer to get my CD songs that are downloaded onto the itunes library site (don't know how to get these either) and it doesn't appear to recognise my iPod touch.
    I also couldn't log in to the Apple site this morning, but later on at about lunchtime I could!  Bizarre.  Of course I haven't had any problems logging into this site with my password and ID at all today. 
    So, lllaass, I am going to try Apple support again via the phone and see what happens....I have a job number to quote them when I call them back.  Thanks for your suggestions - I am definitely not an IT whiz, but I do know that my iPOD did work forthe first day or so.
