SERIOUS Mountain Lion Problems

Within a day of installing ML, the HDD in my iMac failed - totally unrelated to my ML installation.  My iMac received a replacement HDD in the local Apple repair shop, and I had it back in 4 days.  I asked the repair techs to NOT install anything on the hard drive so I could do a clean install of ML when I got the iMac home.  I did this clean install by booting from an external HDD, with ML installed on it.  Then I used Migration Assistant to reload everything else from a Time Machine backup.  It all worked very well, I think.  But I am now experiencing unusual problems...
I made the choice some years ago to use Mozilla Firefox as my internet browser instead of Safari.  But now, I have had trouble with Firefox from Day One of my ML installation.  It just runs S-L-O-W.  It seems to take forever to load all the images on a website page, when they used to just pop into view right away.  I notice also that accessing websites from other apps (like the App Store) is also V-E-R-Y S-L-O-W.  I thought I would try Safari instead of Firefox to see if I would achieve better results.  Well... I haven't yet been able to open Safari.  It crashes and burns before it ever opens!  I've tried so many times to open it that Apple must be getting really tired of my error messages that are sent to them each time!
To add insult to injury, my iMac just up and reboots itself out of the blue, for no apparent reason.  It has done this a number of times in the last 10 days or so since I installed ML.  And I am getting a message that the iMac is rebooting because of an error situation.  My iMac has never -- seriously... never -- done this before.  Not when running Lion.  Not when running Snow Leopard.  Never, until now with Mountain Lion.  Interestingly, I installed ML on my MacBook Air, and the installation seems to have worked find.  I'm not experiencing problems on my Air.
Is anybody else experiencing these kinds of issues?  Would it be safe and expedient for me to do a total reinstall of Mountain Lion at this point?  Is anyone aware of anything else that might be going on to cause these difficulties?

The Safari crash does not generate a "kernel panic" -- I'm afraid I don't know what that is.  What I get instead is a "Problem Report for Safari" like the following, which I got just a few minutes ago when I tried to launch Safari again...

When submitting a target survey I get back an error.... I think this may be a safari problem or mountain lion problem as I used to be able to submit surveys on their survey site.  This problem occurs if I use my MacBook Pro or my iPad.  I want try  to win a 5000 gift card and can't win if I can't submit the survey.  It lets me fill out everything and only after I hit submit I receive an error.  Target says it's not their problem.  I curious to know if anyone else has tried and receive back an error after hitting the submit button.

Thanks.....I'll try that the next time I get a new receipt from target.  My old receipts are older than 72 hours now so I can't try Firefox with them.  I appreciate the response and will certainly try this and post a reply if I was successful in submitting the target survey.

You need to give more details:
    1. What version of Pages?
    2. Where did you get the Greek dictionary from and exactly how did you install it?
    3. Are you applying the language to your text?

  • Iphoto 9.3 and Mountain Lion Problems : Cant access my library : rebuilding doesn't work just hangs for hours

My Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard, had hard drive failure so I had to borrow a friends similar machine to access my iPhoto library ( 523 GB) on a 1TB drive after editing the photos and after exporting one folder of images the program quit and then asked me to repair which I tried hung up at 99% and would not open the event thumbnails . I have tried everything even trying to transfer the particular event from that library to a new library using iphoto manager just so I can export my project and send but still no success as it is telling me that it is getting no info from the library, I changed permissions on the drive ..still no success . I restarted Iphoto and it took hours to show the images but all events thumnails said "0" and it shows all the event cover photos as a gray photo with a palm tree in it or something . I tried rebuilding again this morning and the new library says "0" photos and a library size of 7.3 mb
I got my own Macbook 17in back yesterday and downloaded Mountain Lion to my machine and Iphoto 9.3
I tried to open the library which is 523 GB of images that used to work fine before getting an error message saying it needed to be repaired. I tried opening it with Iphoto 9.3 via I photo manager which told be that there were inconsistencies in the library and it needed to be repaired I chose that option and it is now the following day still "rebuilding thumbnails" since last night . This is a huge problem I have missed project deadlines and my income is severely affected by this situation of not being able to access my work. What can I do to fix this, access my files and export my overdue project at this point ?

Terence I find it surprising that you would say use Iphoto Manager after saying that I used it to rebuild using it took me to 99% of the way and just hung. I even spent my $20 and got the latest version 3.8.3  which was supposed to remedy these issues. See below my email to Fat Cat software the makers of Iphoto Manager:
"Email to Fat Cat Software : Re Iphoto problems:
My Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard, had hard drive failure so I had to borrow a friends similar machine to access my iPhoto library ( 523 GB) on a 1TB drive
after editing the photos and after exporting one folder of images the program quit and the asked me to repair which i tried …it hung up at 99% and would not open the event thumbnails .I have tried everything trying to transfer the particular event from the library to a new library using Iphoto Manager just so I can work on my project but still no success as IPLM is telling me that it is getting no info from the library, I changed permissions on the drive ..still no success .
I opened it using IPLM and it took hours to show the images but all events said "0" and it shows all the event cover photos as a gray photo with a palm tree in it or something . I tried rebuilding again this morning and the new library says "0" photos and a library size of 7.3 mb . There
really seems to be a serious problem with Iphoto 9.3 as it
asks you to rebuild or repair the library then IPLM stops at 99% leaving
    the thumbnails
unviewable and just hangs up after that or wont open and there the problems start.
Please advise and give me some viable options on this issue."
Its days later and the support at Fat Cat software emailed me asking a question and are apparently just as floored as I am with this malfunction ..I hope they are working feverishly to address this as my conclusion and solution is as follows :
Using the older version of Iphoto Library Manager when my machine asked me to upgrade and rebuild instead of the first aid function in Iphoto 9.3 did not help but actually corrupted my library and downloading the latest version did not help remedy it either. What I should have done and am now doing is using the Iphoto first Aid function in Mountain Lion and Iphoto 9.3 using option command to rebuild the entire library. So far it is working with no hangups ...it is now rebuilding image version number 6715 and counting with 33000+ images to go ..if this solution really rebuilds then that is the ONLY way to go with this issue which has cost me a lot of time and money in missed deadlines , lost income and lost business . Iphoto and Iphoto Library manager are normally great in what their purposes are and in ease of use and function but whenawry with compatibility in version software issues arise things go terribly awry and the tedious painstaking fixes available that go for days on end  just do not cut it.

  • Reinstalling Mountain lion problem

Hello! After erasing all the data on my computer, it wants to reinstall the Mountain lion OS. With my apple ID, with which I haven't been purchasing anytning before, I went to the apple shop and bought Mountain lion OS (and the order status says now - complete). But when I try to start the installation again - it says that this ID was not used to purchase lion....Does that mean - I need to purchase Lion OS as well?
Even if it is so, the problem is that Lion OS is not available in my country's store anymore....so I switched to the US store and bought it there...
I have Mountain lion purchased in my country's store, and Lion os - purchased in the US store.
For some reason that's also becomming a big problem, because when I try to start the installation and login to my ID - there is no connection between the apple stores in different countrees....so if in my ID I choose US as a country, it goes to the US store and says- I did not purchase Mountain lion os, If I choose my country in my ID - it goes to my country's store and says - I did not purchase lion...What now????

The Complete Guide to Using the iTunes Store | iLounge Article
"Although you can browse the iTunes Store in any country without being signed in, you can only purchase content from the iTunes Store for your own country. This is enforced via the billing address associated with your credit card or other payment method that you use with the iTunes Store, rather than your actual geographic location."
The policy is the same for both the iTunes and Mac App Stores.

  • Mountain Lion Problems: Preview, TextEdit, Reminders

Hi, just updated to Mountain Lion a couple of days ago.
Still getting used to it, and as I was poking around seeing how the new stuff works, I noticed that Reminders and Notes wouldn't open, and TextEdit and Preview still continue to not open since the Lion 10.7.4 update. Whenever I click on them, the icons bounce for a few seconds in the dock and then they disappear.
On top of that, after updating to Mountain Lion, the App Store is almost completely broken. Most of the time, I have a blank window (except for the icons at the top), and the app doesn't appear to be able to connect. Sometimes I even get an error message saying something about not being to establish a secure connection, which is weird, because Safari, Skype and iTunes seem to go online just fine. So App Store just shows a cogwheel spinning forever in the window, and my pointer turns in to a Spinning Beachball of Doom if it goes over the App Store window. In the last 2 days, App Store connected just once, and it showed the top apps charting, but when I went to look at my own installed apps list, the window went blank and the cogwheel spun up again.
Does anyone have any clue what to do to fix this?

So by accident I found a loophole in App Store cockblocking me from... well, using it at all. For some reason, normally starting up App Store caused it to cogwheel to oblivion, but using the Software Update option from the Apple Menu brought up the part of App Store that grabs updates without a hitch. So I got the new version of ML (10.8.1) from there, made a USB bootable SD card version of the ML installer, then did a clean install using that.
But for anyone else in the same situation, you may find like I did, that going anywhere else in the App Store will cause it to cogwheel to infinity and beyond again. So just get in, get the ML installer and get out of there
Data recovery hasn't gone exactly smoothly, even though I backup with Time Machine pretty much every night. But I'm where things are better than they were, and everything seems a bit snappier than before, as I guess all clean installs do... Probably I can recover everything I had before by doing everything manually. I thought Time Machine was supposed to allow this, but I guess not if you're trying to avoid carrying over corrupt settings (which seemed to be my problem). I think Migration/Setup Assistant could use a little more fine control over what you bring over or not.

  • Mountain Lion problems with Mail Signatures, Pages, Numbers, Keynote - This quick fix solved all my problems with these. Pages etc wouldn't launch and needed to be force quitted. Mail signature changes wouldn't save.

The solution was simple in my case. I don't know why it worked and it may have been entirely coincidental but its worth a try.
Close all applications and restart Mountain Lion.
Log in as Guest. I opened Pages at this point but I don't know if that's required.
Log out and then back in as your normal user.
Pages, Numbers and Keynote now were fine for me and Mail signature changes were saved and available for later use.
For those trying to edit the signatures to get their old ones back - I just found an old sent mail and copied the signature there into the newly created one via the normal preferences. No need for opening .mailsignature files and editing them. This included various colours, sizes, an image and a link with no problems.
I hope this helps anyone having some of these problems.

  • Adobe flash player and mountain lion problems

I've just upgrded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and now find that I'm getting messages (TVcatchup) asking for Adobe Flash player although I appear to have successfully installed version 11.3. In other sites I'm asked to install Java although I understood Mountain Lion to contain a Javea equivalent. Any clues out there please?

Sorry guys. I discovered that Safari / Preferences / Security tab I had the 'enable plug - ins' unchecked. I checked it and it solved the problem.
Hope it helps - took me a couple of days before I found it by chance (thrashing around!)

  • Mountain Lion: problem with Time Machine directories and spotlight indexing

I'm using a fresh install of 10.8 Mountain Lion on a 2011 MBP.  It's a work laptop with many ASCII files containing numerical data (floating point numbers), with varying file extensions.  Some of the files are multi-gig, some are only a few hundred K, and there are tens of thousands of them.  Roughly 500G of numerical data.
I can disable spotlight from indexing certain subdirectories of my home directory on the local drive.  However, when using Time Machine to backup, I seem to be entirely unable to prevent spotlight from attemping to fully index the external drive (Time Machine volume).   I actually let spotlight run for over 36 hours this weekend in a futile attempt for it to finish indexing the TM volume.   The /.Spotlight-V100 index on the external drive is roughly 100G and continuously written and overwritten.  /var/log/system.log had various "Merging failed" messages for temp spotlight files.  I deleted the index, let spotlight run again overnight, but it did not finish indexing.  "sudo fs_usage -f filesys mds mdworker mdimport mdworker32 | grep open" showed spotlight slowly chugging through the thousands of numerical files.
I believe the problem is related to this old report from someone who noticed a leopard -> snow leopard change:
    http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showthread.php?t=106703
    http://forums.cnet.com/7723-6126_102-366184/snow-leopard-10-6-spotlight-indexing -and-disk-usage/
However, I don't see an easy solution.  In ML, if you drag the TM volume to the spotlight privacy list it gives you a message about how you can't disable indexing of TM volumes because it's essential for TM.  I have not yet tried to manually put in some kind of .metadata_never_index file in the relevant TM volume directories (I am not sure if that will do anything, or perhaps break TM backups), but that's one possible next step.
Anyone have ideas on how I can have my TM backups work but the spotlight indexing of all these data files (their subdirectories) disabled?   I'm not specifically TRYING to back up those data files with TM (they're duplicated elsewhere), they're just on the same machine as a bunch of other stuff I need backed up via TM.  Apple has a disaster on their hands for anyone trying to backup a machine which also has large data sets.

I'm not aware of any avenue to tell spotlight to not index all or part of a backup.
However, the indexing should work, even if takes a long time.
I don't think this is a new issue and has been part of TM from the start.
Realistically, it may be time to consider whether TM is the best choice for these data files?
Are they very volatile do they change frequently both as to content of individual files and total set of files?
If not, then a clone or syncing type of backup might be better suited for these files.
I do not back up all my files via time machine. I keep photographs and music outside of Time Machine. to be sure they are backed up but via clones.
To show why  this might the best take photographs. My photographs are basically immutable once they enter the system, but I may come back with 5000 images from a trip and whittle that down to a few hundred eventually. This would cause a lot of files to be saved in TM that are no longer wanted, - but are not easy to remove formthe backup. while the ones I want haven't changed. TM is not geared to make handling that easily.
As a further aside, ideally one should back everything of value up twice via 2 different means.
I've had backup drives fail.I've had TM logically fail (disk is fine -TM internal data structures bad).

  • Downloading Mountain Lion - problems with slow DSL

Since we live in a rural area, my friends (who have a new iMac) are having problems downloading the Mountain Lion file. They are on the end of a DSL line feed and get a weak signal. Can I download the file on my computer and then install the file on their computer? They could log into my computer with their Apple ID to down the file. I am concerned an IP address is imbedded in the download and would cause problems. Thanks for any information.

Provided they use their account this will work. The download will finish and present a button to install, just quit at this point. Go to Applications and you will find the installer, copy it to a removable drive and then your friends can install it on their machine.
It looks like this, and it is 4.37GB in size.

  • Mountain Lion - Problems with Dynacord Powermate 1600-3

    Hey!
I upgraded Lion to Mountain Lion, but that wasn't a nice move. I'm working with Logic Pro 9, and my audio interface when i record is the Dynacord Powermate 1600-3 mixer. When i open Logic and go to preferences->audio and click on output device, the only option i can choose is "built-in output". When i had Lion on my Mac, i was able to choose "Dynacord Audio Interface" in both the input device and the output device. And there wasn't any problems with that.
Hope there are some help to find!

    Venlig hilsen
    Mads

  • Dreamweaver CS5.5 vs. Mountain Lion Problem

After upgrading to Mac OSX Mountain Lion, each time I open Dreamweaver CS5.5 I have to enter my remote server's username and password. The Save password checkbox is checked. Everything works fine during that session but if I close Dreamweaver and reopen it, I find it hasn't retained that username and password. The problem happens 100% of the time. I've seen this same problem with a few other people but no solutions yet. Any idea?
    Thanks,
    David

That's a corrupt keychain, nothing to do with Adobe.  Happened to me after the Apple Lion upgrade with some applications.
First open up the Keychain app in the Utitilies folder (or hit cmd+space for spotlight and type "keychain" it will be first).  Then in the search box at the top of Keychain, type "SiteServer".  That will bring up the DW passwords.  If you don't know your passwords, open each up and write them down.  Once you know them, delete the records that came up from your search.  Then proceed to open DW.  All passwords will now be gone and you will have to go through your site's 1-by-1 and re-add the passwords.  The site definitions will still be in tact, only the passwords will have to be re-saved since DW uses the Apple keychain to store passwords and not the configuration files.  Close DW and re-open again, your passwords should be good to go.

I recently updated to Mountain Lion, and it seems like the graphics are glitching big-time, to the point where the computer becomes unusable and i have to restart... I tried a 'clean' install (formatting and usb-install) but the but the problem persists.
the solution with gfxCardStatus doesn't work with macbook 13" white (mid-2010)
    Thanks for your help !

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t run Mountain Lion. There's a Mountain Lion Support Community where everybody has Mountain Lion.
