Serious OS corruption after 1.1 update

I am having similar problems as DRMG describes after this update, all related to OS and Apple software. Can't shut down or restart, no dock to be found, no Dashboard, many other issues.
Tried to create a new user to begin to isolate the problem but after admin access I cannot add a user--all fields and boxes greyed out.
Sys Info not working, either, but as I do all automatic updates I should have the latest of everything. Really, really could use some tips.

Hi Susan, it sounds like you were able to accomplish some repairs with Repair Permissions. But if Repair Disk reports the volume cannot be repaired, then there is some serious directory damage. It may appear to be working better but it will rear its ugly head again, at exactly the wrong time
You need to back up everything now. Do you have a recent backup/clone? Do you have an external firewire hard drive?
After backing up you might be able to use Disk Warrior or TechToolPro to rebuild your directory.
The other option is an archive & install. Or erase & install.
Post back with any further questions.

I always subscribe to auto-updates, and I do usually stop for a nanosecond to see what they are before giving the Go, but rarely really think about it. Not all require restart, as you know, and when one does I often just continue working for a while, sometimes quite a while, before reaching a convenient break point.Yes, you should not be doing other tasks on your Mac while downloading and installing software. You should restart immediately to allow the updates to complete. Also, you should run "Verify Disk" from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and Repair Permissions before and after installs.

    My T440S has corrupt files and various problems which all seem to have started (maybe) with an update of lenovo solution center. I have Windows 8.1, model number 20AQ-CTO1WW. I see several file in the log that need to be replaced but I don't know how to replace them. I don't have win 8.1 installation media. And when I try to create recovery media from the recovery partition I get an error that files are missing (or something like that, sorry, failed to capture exact error). Soo...suggestions welcome! I am not positive it all started with the solution center update but that is my best guess. Thanks!

    Just to wrap this up, I have my system working again. Whether it actually occurred during the solution center update or not I cannot be sure, but whatever caused it, the repeated error seen afterwards was "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142)", appearing in a dialog box, for many applications (when I tried to get the start menu, when I tried to start some applications (but not others), when I tried to install anything new. The steps that finally cleared things up were:
    - ran "sfc /scannow" in an administrative prompt. sfc found errors but could not repair them.
    - Ran chkdsk, some disk errors were found and fixed.
    - ran "sfc /scannow" in an administrative prompt again, same errors still there, could not be repaired.
    - ran "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth" in an administrative prompt., it found errors and said they were repairable.
    - ran "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" in an administrative prompt., it said it was able to repair the windows image. However, the problems still occurred.
    - ran "sfc /scannow" in an administrative prompt again, and this time, it was able to repair the corrupted files. And after that, all working again.

  • Hard Drive Corrupt After Failed Software Update

    Hi everyone,
    I have an iBook that was recently down for about a month due to a failing DC in board. After replacing the board and restarting, I had a month worth of updates in software update. I installed the two that didn't require a restart -- I think they were the latest iTunes and Quicktime updates. Something went wrong in the middle of the install and after waiting with the OS locked and the hard drive spinning for a couple hours I finally did a hard restart.
    Now upon startup I get to the grey Apple logo and the indicator spins while the hard drive goes back and forth between clicking and spinning. Apple Hardware Test says everything's fine, Disk First Aid gets to "Checking Catalog file" and then errors out:
    Invalid key length
    Volume check failed
    I'm wondering what my best option is to restore the disk since I know my actual data is still there. Also, I haven't tried using target disk mode for anything -- is that worth a try? Thanks.

    "Invalid key length" is a directory error which cannot be repaired by Disk Utility. You will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior. Otherwise, you will need to reformat, erase and reinstall. If you do not have your data backed up you can try using Firewire Target Disk Mode with the assistance of a second firewire Mac.

  • Serious ical problems after 10.6.3 update

    dear forum,
    since my update to 10.6.3 ical has serious problems.
    right after the update ical reported that it had not the rights to access to the calendar cash file.
    after some days this problem fixed itself. but since then ical has a very strange behavior:
    the last event pops up at least every hour and i cannot make any changes in the calendar. e.g. when i delete an event it reappears a second later. despite of this the system update starts every day and i cannot change the frequency of updates in the system preferences.
    does somebody know any help?

    i just recognized that things are even worth. in addition to the ical problems safari does not remember any bookmark i made. after relaunch the new ones are gone, only the bookmarks i made before the 10.6.3 update remain there.

  • Very serious performance probelms after ProKit update 5.1!!!

    After installing Prokit update 5.1 my PPC G5 10.5.8 machine is having HORRIBLE problems. Aplications (Logic, disk utility, iTunes, crash reporter and a couple others) crash while in use but there's no way to make them Force Quit. This has popped up all of the sudden, the only thing that I've done different is this a fore mentioned update.
    yesterday I was working in my studio for several hours. Logic would crash, I'd try to Force Quit but it wouldn't. Left it trying for 20 minutes. Then I'd try a reboot but got the message (roughly) "reboot has timed out because Logic is still running". I'd try force quiting from the dock as well as the Apple menu. So I'd have to hard reset with the power button. A bit later, it happened again, then again and again, all the time having to hard reboot. I started importing CDs into my iTunes library, same problem, had to hard reboot. Ran Disk utility, verified and repaired permissions on all my drives, found plenty of problems that were corrected. Ran disk utility again just to be sure, not IT crashes and won't force quit. Crash reporter comes up; please give a brief description of what happened. I fill out a brief report, hit "send to Apple", nothing, won't connect. I go to manually shut down again but Time Machine is running... and won't stop! I can't get it to quit, finish, abort, anything...
    I leave the studio, eat dinner, calm down, go back to Logic, ALL of the work that I've done over the last 6 hours (and saved, saved, saved... I have a compulsion with "Apple / S") is gone. Erased, like it never happened. So, this is what Time Machine is for, right? Wrong. Time Machine seems to have stopped backing anything up sometime in the afternoon. Neat fail-safe guys.
    So here it is, early the next day and I'm almost afraid to go back in there. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks a ton!!!

    p.s. All software is up to date and nothing has changed in the machine (other than the update) and has been working fine up until now.

    Based on the number of posts on this issue, my guess is that the Apple software developers know there is a significant problem with ProKit 5.1. I wrote another post here:

    They will fix it and ship a patch. They always do. I am just trying to be patient. And backing up projects every 10 minutes or so.

    Same thing happens when i click restart.
    No difference when i run it in Safe mode. And it won't let me create a new profile either. Is there anyway else i can extract my bookmarks? This is driving me crazy!

    Quick answer:  Select all the tracks on the album, File > get info, and either give them all a single "album artist", or check the "compilation" flag (as in https://discussions.apple.com/message/17670085#17670085).
    If these are from multiple-CD sets you may also need to enter the appropriate information in the disc number fields.  If they are not a multiple CD set you still need to make sure the disc number fields are set correctly or all empty.

    I am running the latest iTunes, the latest updates to the OS and on an iMac 3.4GHz Quad core i7 with 8GB of RAM and the music stored on local HDD.
    Still locks up iTunes for between 2 minutes up to 20 minutes.
    Really annoying.
    If you find a fix please, please let me know, I have just been throwing hardware at it with no joy at all

  • I have to turn off 3G ntework to keep my Iphone 3G alive after 3.1 update.

    I never used tethering or jailbreak on my iphone 3G. However, I got punished by Apple for not doing that!
    After 3.1 update, my iphone 3G got a serious problem. It can not make/receive any phone calls, browse internet, and play internet-based games after sitting idle for a while (i.e I do not use it for 30 minutes).
    To get it back to alive again, I have to do a hard reset. I missed many important calls and reset my iphone about 8 times every day in the past few days.
    Called AT&T:
    They had no clue about it. Asked me to do a hard reset first, then performed a network test on my iphone. They said "everything works just fine, case closed!" **** it,I told that useless CS at least three times that the problem comes after sitting idle for a while. If I perform a hard reset, everything will be back to normal temporally.
    Called Apple:
    They ssked me to restore it first. I spent several hours to back up and restore my Iphone 3G. Problem not fixed at all. Apple, you own me 4 hours here.
    They also suggested me to have Apple store technician take a look. But the only store in Indiana is closed for remodeling and will be open again in two weeks.
    Called Apple again:
    This time, they acknowledged the issue. They said their developers are working on this issue. A new update will be out in 2-4 weeks. The only solution they offered is hard reset. Useless!
    Me:
    I did some research online, figure out that the problem has something to do with the 3G network. If I disable the 3G network in the Setting, my iphone works just fine(of course, no more 3G speed).
    Apple, please recall your 3.1 update! I just want 3.01 back, or fix the issue now. Is that too much to ask?
    I hope that I can get an acceptable answer in this forum.

    With all the problems I have read with the 3.1, the best thing to do is go back to download 3.0.1 and install through iTunes. Here is the link to all of the hardware:

    I downloaded and tried EasyFind. It works but it took 30+ seconds to complete finding 3 files that are on One of my Five 25+ Gb partitions of my 130 Gb Seagate Cuda(Really 160 Gb, but my Sawtooth will only recognize 130) I figured that if I ever got a better box, I could reformat it to see the whole 160 Gb. So, as far as I can see, Spotlight's indexing scheme which finds the files instantly is probably preferable. Spot light allows you to rename your files from within it's app window. I've always thought that was pretty powerful. Could my doing so be causing me any issues? As i said it is the inability to Type in the Finder that seemed to be caused from changing file Extentions that were mis-written. Maybe it was a delayed reaction to my renaming files in the Spotlight app? I've done both on occasion.
    As for these .DS_Store files. Apparently you can NOT stop them from being written to any folder that you touch/open/view during a days session. But, as a function of the OS, are the essential to have in their respective folders Forever? I've looked at the .DS_Store terminator app briefly and assume that getting rid of these files won't hurt the regular operation of my OS. They will just be re-written if I ever have to go back to any particular folder again. But, apparently, some have said that if the plan on burning a CD or DVD of their data, they delete the .DS_Store files first and then do the burn.
    I'm thinking from your having suggested this tremination app that you suspect that my having all of these ,DS_Store files could be a situation where any of them could have become corrupted and terminating them regularly should be part of my regular maintenance.
    Does that sound like I'm understanding what I can do?

    After using software update, I believe it said it was a security update. My laptop will not progress past a screen that says " Setting up your Mac...".  I have tried holding down the power to restart but it always stops at the same place. I am using a MacBook Pro (17-inch Early 2009) running mavericks.

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    Upgraded to FF 13.0.1 with no problems encountered. The next day I restarted the system and installed the Windows Defender definition update released on 6/15 (11.27.2061.0 - KB915597) via Windows Update. After applying the update FF crashed immediately upon starting several times. I rebooted the system - no change. I then applied the restore point created just before the Defender update was applied, rebooted, and was able to start FF normally.

    Does it help if you create a new profile or uninstall and reinstall Firefox?
    If you reinstall Firefox then be sure to remove the Firefox program folder to remove possibly left over files in it.
    You can try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

    It is also possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.

    Latest firmware with CCC corrupted after power outage. I reseet the e4500 several times and tried to reload the firmware and still no good. Only way I got it back up is to install the older non-CCC version 2.37. Strange all was fine until the power outage. Not sure if I should even bother to upgrade to 2.38 again.

    Yes, power outages may caused some damage either on the hardware or software of the any device especially if there's some activity going on inside the device the time of the interruption. If everything is fine with the old version then there's really no need to update it but if you've noticed some issues, better upgrade to the newer version so to fix any problems.
