Serious Overheating (?) killed my macbook...

I have a late 2008 macbook 13" that I had a problem or two with in the past.  Aside from cracking the lcd, I started noticing the macbook getting extremely hot and would occasionally shutdown without notice/warning.  The battery in it was run-down and the computer wouldn't run without being plugged in (I realize this may not be the 'healthiest' for my mac)...
So, I'm taking full blame for whatever problems I allowed to build up... but long story short, I woke up one morning to find that the macbook wouldn't power on at all.  There are smoke/burn marks coming from the fan exhaust... and more worriesome: they casing around the keyboard is discolored as if it was exposed to extremely high temperatures (mostly in the center - around f;g;h;v;b keys.).  When trying to start up the mac now, there is no more that a click/groan type noise accompanied by the led light on the magsafe cord dimming...  there are no other signs of anything running; no fans, spinning sounds, etc.
What is the most probable cause and is there anyway I can diagnose the issue before taking it to get looked at?
Luckily, I received a iMac 27" before this happened... whether the problem is the logicboard, powersupply, motherboard; is there any way I can boot up the hdd of my macbook to access it on my iMac?  I've read i can remove the harddrive and place inside an xhd case... but i was hoping I could skip this step and just connect computer-to-computer...
and questions u can answer would be of a great help. Thanks!

Forget it - the MB is fried (literally).
Remove the HD and use the said enclosure to attempt to rescue your data. Of course, if the HD was one of the overheated components you may be unable to retrieve anything even then.
Good job you have that backup, eh…??
Frankly, from what you've described I wouldn't even bother taking it in. It's highly likely they'll charge you for the diagnostics and still tell you it's scrap.

  • I killed a MacBook Pro. Shutdown with flash in drive and now it won't start at all.

I may have killed my MacBook Pro OS X by accidentally restarting  with  a Flash Drive it it and now it won't start at all.  Any ideas?

So it is powering on. You did not state that before. In that case:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Also see this if above doesn't work:
    Install OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should install the original version of OS X that came on the machine.

  • Serious Graphics Problems with Macbook Pro 15'' Retina

    Hi
even before and especially after having installed the latest updates for Mountain Lion I'm experiencing serious problems with my Macbook Pro 15'' Retina notebook. Have a look

Does anyone else have this kind of problem? It's not the only problem I had with my Macbook Pro Retina and the Mountain Lion OS but as of now the most troubling one.

  • Have I Killed my macbook?

Have I completly killed my macbook? I dropped it off the bed last night when it was switched on and open, it now wont restart, all I get is the grey screen and no further, if you press the power button once when its like this the macbook switches off imediatly.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks

Very interesting. It is not often that you can boot into one OS without being able to boot into the other. My guess is that when you dropped it, the HHD pin tore into the disk while it was spinning. Apparently, this only corrupted data on the OSX side. I would get all of your Windows Data saved on an external HDD, re install OSX onto the new HDD, and re partition and install Windows.
Out of curiosity, what HHD did you get? If money isn't too tight, I HIGHLY recommend getting a SSD. They are faster, more energy efficient, and you can drop them all you want and you will never get the problem you are currently experiencing.

  • 10.5.2 killed my MacBook Air DEAD.

10.5.2 completely killed my MacBook Air.
i just installed the 10.5.2 update from the 343MB Combo updater downloaded from Apple. installation went fine... clicked to restart... showed the "need to update boot caches" window/warning. clicked "okay". it continued and went to the blue screen with the spinny wheel. then rebooted.
went to a grey screen... and nothing else. no Apple. no spinny wheel. nothing.
left it there for a good 20 minutes. no hard drive noise. nothing was happening.
powered it up again. grey screen. nothing happens. no Apple. no "no" symbol. no anything.
restarted with D to try out that new built-in hardware test. NOTHING.
restarted with "option" to get the bootloader screen. NOTHING.
restarted with apple-V... obviously it wasn't even getting that far. so still NOTHING.
restarted with the PRAM reset combo. at least i got the chime. did it 3 times. then... NOTHING. grey screen still.
restarted with the SMC reset key-combo. got the chime... then NOTHING. grey screen.
i have run out of key combinations to try. and the machine is functionally dead.
normally at this point i'd try a "T" and mount it on another machine to see what is going on. but... this is a MacBook Air.
anyone have any ideas? this is beyond frustrating.
    thanks.

looks like the 10.5.2 update was just highly highly coincidental. definitely seems odd the logic board would die at the exact instant of a restart from installing 10.5.2.
When a light bulb files, it's usually fails when it is turned on. Ditto for most electronic devices. Whether it's a surge or whatever, it's probably true that your logic board would have failed when you started the computer up for whatever reason. There is no evidence that software can damage hardware directly, or at least instantly. Besides, the update should not have any effect on the computer until the boot process is well under way.
Bad software might cause a computer to overheat, etc., but not to damage a component on boot.

  • MacBook Pro seriously overheating while gaming

I tried using a MacBook Pro 9,1 with Bootcamp Windows 7 to play the Elder Scrolls Online today.  After about five minutes, HW Monitor showed that the temperature of the CPU had reached 105 degrees Celsius, and the temperature of the GPU 90 degrees Celsius.  HW Monitor shows that both fans are running around 6200 rpm, and I am using a cooling pad in addition.  I checked before I ran the game, and the temperatures were hovering around 40-50 degrees Celsius.  Even now, they are still around 80 degrees Celsius.
Is this a problem with the computer, or is this normal for a MacBook Pro?  I have heard that MacBook Pros tend to overheat, but I was not aware that they reached such high temperatures so quickly.  I know its summer, but those temperatures are still pretty crazy.  Around 80 degrees, the framerate of the game drops to around 10 fps, which makes playing pretty difficult.  It seems kind of pointless to have such a capable GPU with 1 GB of VRAM when games only run for a few minutes before overheating.  Should I take it in to the Apple Store, or should I use some other means to cool it?
    Best Regards,
    Alex

This is a bootcamp issue, when running windows on a mac via boot camp the fans kick in very late, i dunno whys apple can't get this sorted
Surely Windows/ Microsoft is responsible for fan control when using Bootcamp?
I wouldn't expect Apple to fix the temperature issues Linux has when it is booted on a Mac - it isn't helped by Apples choice of fan & temperature sensors but Apple don't control how other OS's run. Search around to see if Windows has better drivers for managing the fans on your laptop model.
Also look into self powered coolers or ways to improve air circulation if you need to use this Mac running Windows for gaming. If it is in warranty take it along to an Apple store - if it isn't 'fit for purpose' or doesn't meet the original description it may be possible to get a refund (or repair/ replacement if faulty)  depending on your local consumer laws.

  • MacBook Pro seriously overheating

    Hi
When running at 100% CPU utilization for more than 5 minutes the CPU main temperature reaches between 112 and 115 deg. C (233 - 239 deg. F).
Anyone else experiencing such extreme temperatures?
    /Jeppe

That's definitely too hot. Take the machine in for service and demonstrate the problem.

  • Plugging official DVI to Video adaptor to Macbook Pro 3,1 recently updated to Mavericks killed my Macbook's SMC

So it happens that since Lion and now, of course, Mavericks, the DVI to Video/S-Video support is not only unsupported, but crashes your 2008 Macbook Pro (MacbookPro3,1, 15 inch) if you plug the official adaptor in. The screen went with artifacts and the computer needed a hard reset.
What happened after that is that the computer wouldn't start. Of course I immediately did SMC and PRAM resets without results. No leds, no start chime, nothing. Only method found was to bypass the SMC (which is done via holding de power button with battery/power cord unplugged, then plugging power cord still holding it, releasing, and pressing it again). Everything is then ok except, of course, everything controlled by the SMC (no battery, leds, fans at full speed). Did Apple's Hardware Check, full test, no errors found. Reflashed manually the SMC via an EFI Shell, as found on the internet: the SMC is in "U" mode and can't be correctly reflashed. After that, I unmounted the logic board looking for any kind of corruption; found nothing.
In resume, did everything I could for a week. The last thing I found out is that plugging the adaptor itself, without connecting to any external device (no TV), still crashes the screen with artifacts. I beleive this has to do with the adaptor having inside some chips, since it's function is not to rewire cables, but to convert one signal to another. What happens after that and a hard-reset again, and after that hard reset the now installed rEFIt screen doesn't appear, so I believe that, effectively, connecting the adaptor affects your computer's boot system somehow.
I know Apple doesn't support computers old as these anymore, and I don't even care they quit the Video-out support with their new free OS, but if by doing that you enable your own official 20-30€ adaptor to kill an otherwise fully functional Macbook, that's foul play.
Any advice will be greatly received. Thanks for reading.

Forgot to mention that the DVI adaptor works ok if plugged to a DVI monitor, so it's not a physical problem from the DVI output plug.

  • Severe overheating of 17" MacBook Pro (2009) with 3.06 GHz processor

For around a year and a half I have been dealing with a computer that constantly overheats very quickly, presumably because I ordered a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU for my 17" MacBook Pro without realizing that it would make the surface of the computer super hot. I recently looked at the new generation of MacBook Pros and saw that the max they offer now is 2.8 GHz. Good move, Apple, but it doesn't help me feel like I didn't waste more than $3100 on a machine that constantly burns my hands.
While the computer was under warranty I complained to Apple and they replaced it with an identical model with identical overheating problems. Without any recourse that I knew of (or any other computer to use), I just kept on using it.
Now I am using applications that I did not use before that make the computer even hotter. And I can forget games -- while playing Tropico 3 in Bootcamp it got so hot that it even shut itself down. And Minecraft in OSX brought the CPU up to 225 degrees F according to smcFanControl, even with the fans at their max of 6000 rpm.
In order to use it to work I have to cover the area to the left of the trackpad with a hand cloth to keep it from burning my palms, and accidentally touching the area around the left speaker is nothing short of punishment.
Since my computer is out of warranty, Apple support does not want to have anything to do with me anymore. So I was wondering if anyone knew how to slow the CPU down in the hopes that I can work with something that does not burn my hand and make me break out into a sweat. Any tips?

I have a similar problem. Although in my case my computer (Macbook Pro 17 - 3.06ghz Core 2 Duo), isn't actually having any functioning problems .. but I worry that running the CPU's constantly around 90-100 degrees celsius can't be good for it in the long run.
It seems your model is getting even hotter than mine. I find running Logic Pro makes mine really work at high temperatures. Mostly when I work with video. And again if I'm running World of Warcraft, then the temperature rides pretty high at up to 103 Degrees.
I too have the SMC app on running the fans at maximum. For a while I've just thought that the computer simply is built to run at these temperatures .. indeed I'm sure it is. But I'm getting strange graphical 'lurches' in games now where everything appears to slow down and then catch up with itself. I'm pretty sure this is due to the graphics system being overworked, or perhaps the system CPU is getting way too hot to work properly. Have never had a system crash because of it yet .. but I fear that after a year of running my laptop as is .. that the temperature issue is finally catching up with it.
Does anyone know what the typical operating temperature of the Macbook Pro 17 inch (3.06 ghz Core 2 Duo) model is supposed to be? And i don't mean the idling temperature .. I mean the operating temperature during gaming, music creation and other high end means?
I wish there was a way to underclock the CPU just to see if that improves the temperature issue. But no one seem to know a way to do this.
Well .. you're not the only one. I do enjoy my Macbook and regardless of the temperature problem it is still the best computer I've ever had.

  • IPhone 4 update has killed my MacBook!

After updating my software two days ago, the administrator account on my 13" Aluminum MacBook has not worked. It works for 5-10 seconds after login and then totally freezes and doesn't recognise any change in status such as the removal of the power source or the plugin of my iPhone. I am positive that it was the update that caused this problem, as I have not updated the software on the other user account on my laptop, and that works perfectly fine.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how can it be fixed?
I called Apple Support yesterday before I realised that my secondary account was still working, and we established that there was no problem with the hard drive, but we were unable to get into "safe mode". The only advice the tech could give me was to find my startup discs and take it to an Apple store and call back in.
Now that I have more information, and am able to actually use most of the computer, I'm starting to think there may be an easier solution?
    Thanks!

I don't suppose you have access to another Mac?
Safe Mode failing to work could be a sign of more serious troubles.
Did you get to the login window for Safe Mode?
As for getting at your data, you may be able to enable the root account and work with your other files.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1528
I've never used root in OS X, but what you could do to save your data is login to the root account, then move the data from the broken user account to the Shared folder (this is within Macintosh HD>Users). Once you've moved the data you need to the Shared folder, log out of the root account and into the other working user. From there, you can move the data out of the Shared folder and into the new user account.
I'm not absolutely certain about my steps above, so let me know if you have troubles.

  • Premiere CS6 crash with "serious problem"..on Macbook Pro?

Every minute or two it will crash. I just recently bought the whole adobe suite and am mainly using premiere but I can't get anywhere with it continually crashing.
    My Mac info:
    Version 10.8.3
Processor: 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Please help!
    - Also let me know if there is any other info needed to help understand the problem. I am not completely sure what would be useful.

I'll respond here because I'm having similar problems with my Macbook Pro Retina and Premiere 6 crashing far too much.
    Computer:
    2.3 GHz Intel i7
    16GB Ram
Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB
The most recent crach happened when I tried to select about 10 audio clips that I had just unlinked fron their video and tried to delete them: "Serious error"
Also get serious errors and crash when trying to move a video clip to the beginning of the timeline while its set to "Show audio time units". Sometimes there is a little gap between the left bumber (beginning) and the video clip, though the audio goes all the way. When I try to move the video all the way to the beginning, crash.
Anyway, I report all of the crashes and give a detailed description. Any help on this would be great.

  • Flash is killing my MacBook Air

Whenever I watch a video in Chrome or Safari, the Flash plug-in sends the CPU through the roof. The fan on my MacBook Air goes bonkers and it runs really hot. I have to force quit the applications in Activity Monitor to bring the machine back to normal. All my software is up to date.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks, and sorry for my subjective language.
The CPU will run at 90-110% before I kill it. I don't know how hot it runs but the fan goes into overtime.
And just now, I've connected my iPad to my Macbook and iPhoto is syncing. The same thing is happening: the fan is going really fast (normally I can't even hear it, but right now it's super loud and the top of my Macbook near the power socket is very hot to touch) and in Activity Monitor, iPHoto is at betwwen 140 and 150% of CPU.
This just doesn't seem normal, but this is my first Mac so I don't really know.

  • Seriously messed up my macbook pro... I think.

    Hello!
I purchased a toshiba hybrid HD/SSD (MQ01ABD100H) and 8gb of ram from macsales.com. I purchased this to upgrade my macbook pro from 4gb of memory and 500gb hdd to a hybrid 1tb hd/ssd and 8gb of ram. I received these items in the mail today, and went on their website to install everything correctly. After successfully installing everything into the computer, I turned it on. At first, I was getting the folder with a question mark in it, so I just loaded mavericks off of my flash drive. When I went to boot it off that, it comes up with an error saying there was an error, please wait a few seconds or press a key to continue startup; this is a new error to me so I just continued the startup. A few seconds later, next to the Apple a bunch of black text with some errors and the computer name came up. It then restarted the computer before I could take a picture and white screened . I turned it off and removed the new hard drive and put it in a passport to install the mavericks manually from my iMac. I did that sucessfully, and when I put it in my computer it was doing the same thing. So then I launched it from the recovery drive. I went to install a fresh install, but after about 2 minutes in, it restarts itself and goes back to the selection of time machine back up, fresh install, or disk utility. It's in a never ending loop of this. I then to troubleshoot put in my old drive hoping I could just use that. As soon as I put it in and closed it up and turned it on, it was doing the error and black text with whitescreen. I proceeded to call apple a few minutes ago, hoping they could give me some advice. I then learned by telling them I did it myself, I voided my hardware warranty (how happy I am about this). They gave me some repair places I could go to, but it's not very likely they will take me due to me voiding my warranty. Is there anyone that has had this problem? Or can give me help/advice or anything? I'm going on vacation friday to Hawaii and I need the Macbook for business... This has been a disaster. I have a feeling it's the actual macbook pro, since when I switch the hard drives it's messing up still. If anyone can help me, I appreciate all suggestions or solutions!!!
    Thank you!

I can boot it off of the external enclosure; here is what happened.
When I turned it on, after going into the select a boot and selecting the external drive, it went into the white screen with a bunch of black text(i assume errors.)After this error, it automatically restarted itself. I let it run it's course and figured it would whitescreen again, however it did not. It successfully went to my log in screen, but there are major graphic errors with the mouse and the display (shown below.) After successfully logging in, it took about 4-5 minutes to load the desktop successfully (usually takes about 12-20 seconds). Does this help at all?
    I really appreciate your help!

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
