Serious Problem Batch Capturing  HDV

I just searched through about 10 pages of this Forum and I could not find anyone with the exact Same problem. I am Using a G4 Mac with 1 GB of RAM with Final Cut 5.0 and I am trying to Capture Footage From a Friends Sony HDV HDR-FX!. I have logged about 18 clips for about 41 minutes of footage. Everytime I go to Batch Capture I tell it to Capture all of the clips and it instantly says Cannot Locate Timecode... Thank You in Advance if you can help, and the sooner the better.

FWIW, Here's the way I worked successfully last summer on a project that was shot on some sony HDV camera. We rented a Sony HDV deck. I went to the end of the tape and marked an out, I went to the beginning of the tape, let the tape roll for about 5 seconds or so and marked an out. I had "abort capture on dropped frames" and "create new clip on time code break" enabled in preferences. Captured the entire tape as HDV. FCP created a number of clips. I then batch captured these clips as DV so I had both HDV and DV clips. Both parts of this process worked flawlessly.
I wonder whether you've got enough RAM. Is FCP5.0 compatible with this camera? Are you sure you're using the correct capture preset? I'm not sure what variations the camera is capable of, but are you sure that you're capture preset exactly matches the format you were shooting (frame rate, pixel dimensions, etc.).

  • Batch capture HDV error

I have FCP 5.14 and have just logged a bunch of HDV footage offline. I did this the normal way I would when capturing DV footage, marking the in and out point and then log the clip, standard stuff?
When I try to Batch capture the offline clips it captures only 1 frame from each clip, then the clip details are also effected, ie the Media start and media end of my clips changes from what they where into two new time codes 1 frame either side of the newly captured clip.
Is this a program error or am I just completely useless??? Can somebody help me please

Not sure if this is your exact problem, but I've had issues with Batch Capturing HDV in FCP 5.1.4 using both a Sony M15U and M25U.
The deck would seek to the appropriate place on the tape and then just jog back and forth looking for the right start point. It would do this about 3 times and then give up.
The solution for this was a DROP FRAME / NON-DROP FRAME setting in FCP. If you go to your A/V Settings and then to the Device Control Presets tab and edit your preset (If it's locked you can just make a copy of it and edit the copy - I am using the Sony HDV firewire preset). If you know what your footage was shot in (drop or non) make this setting adjustment. If you don't know, try both.
As soon as this not so little detail was checked everything batch captured without fail. Just make sure there aren't any timecode breaks on your tape.
    Hope this helps.

  • Problem batch capturing

    FCP HD 4.5, easy set-up (DV-NTSC)
I'm trying to batch capture 10 clips. Each clips starts to capture for about 3 seconds and then it stops and says "error". I try pressing "continue" but it keeps trying to capture the same clip and I get the same message.
    What am I doing wrong?
I just batch captured another tape and it captured fine.
    thanks for the help.

I just batch captured another tape and it captured
    fine.
Perhaps an obvious question but....is the name of the tape you're capturing on still from the previous tape you captured? It does happen sometimes.

  • Batch capture problems HDV

Hi we are trying to batch capture HDV 1080i 25fps footage filmed from both a Sony Z1 and Z7 camera in Final Cut Pro 7. The problem comes when we try and batch capture or clip capture logged footage in final cut pro, the tape seems to be stuck in a continuous preroll loop on the first clip that needs capturing, the only way to capture any footage is through capture now. Finally the capture deck we are using is a Sony HVR-M15AE deck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like there may not be enough preroll space on the source tape ie not enough preceding unbroken timecode to allow for the preroll time needed ... if so then you may need to try a shorter preroll for that clip. Check (and possibly edit) the preroll setting in your Audio / Video Settings >> Device Control Preset. (You may just want to create a temporary duplicate preset for this shorter preroll setting).
    Hope it helps

  • Recommendation for HDV vtr or camcorder for batch capture

I currently own Premiere Pro CS3 and am using the trial version for PP CS4 on a Mac. One of my biggest problems is batch capturing HDV footage with my Sony HVR-Z7U HDV Camcorder or HVR-M15AU HDV Deck. It just doesn't work properly for CS3 and was disappointed to find out it doesn't work for CS4 either (unless it's a trial version issue?). Both versions I can capture on the fly, but not a batch capture. Even the adobe website say's so. So my question is, what reasonably priced HDV camcorder or VTR can I get that is compatible (let me batch capture) with both versions? Does anybody know? Thank you.

The problem I've found when capturing from the M15 is that the deck does FF and REW at such high speed that it frequently overshoots the mark by as much as two minutes, and then ends up capturing about one minute off. I usually only discover this when I look at the captured clip and find it isn't at all what I said it was when I named it.
So I just take the clip offline and recapture. This usually works. Sometimes I will manually cue the deck up to about one minute before the "in" point, and this helps the deck/Premiere find the correct timecode.
Anyhow, that's my workaround. I have handles set at 150 frames and pre- and post-roll set to the same.
(But note this is for CS3, although I assume this part is the same with CS4.)

  • FCP 5.0 crash when trying to capture HDV. Happens since running  w LEOPARD

I migrated FCS from a G5 1.8 GHz powerPC to a Mac Pro Intel 2.66 GHz. Also I upgraded to Leopard. Now when I set FCP to capture HDV, it quits unexpectedly when I try launch the log and capture tool.
The same thing is happening with FCP in the G5, however, this doesn't happens when I try to capture other formats.
Also when I try to work with HDV media that was captured before the migration (the media is in an external La Cie HD) FCP works slowly and the canvas is green. This is happening in both the Mac Pro and the G5.
In the Mac Pro I have set Quicktime to Rosetta hoping to solve the problem but it persist.
With the G5 I have never had a problem to capture HDV until now that I have done the migration and have upgraded to Leopard.
Have already reinstalled FCS, trashed FCP preferences... What else can I do ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Was your install of Leopard clean? i.e. did you erase a disk and reinstall from the ground up? If not that's probably what needs to happen...

  • A serious problem in Migration workbench - BUG!

When migrating a MS SQL Server 2000 database to Oracle
using Migration WOrkbench 2.0.2 I've run to a serious problem.
Capturing the source database went OK, then creating the
Oracle model started and it finished after some time, but -
after looking at the Oracle model pane I could see no
    objects mapped!
SInce it looked almost impossible to get any technical
support I started to hack thru the Workbench repository
myself and found out that the objects were actually mapped,
but the user which owned them was not mapped to some reason.
    Namely, when issuing the query
    SELECT obj_owner, count(*) FROM om_obj_info GROUP BY obj_owner;
I saw most of the objects owned by the user named
'<DOMAIN>_Administrator' (that what was captured from MS SQL)
while the user mapped in the Oracle model was named simply
"Administrator". After updating manually the obj_owner
field for all those records with 'Administrator' I could
see the migrated objects on the Oracle Model pane.
However that way of doing the job seems rather owful for
me since I will be to perform migration many times for
individual objects - I want them to appear immediately, not
    after hacking thru repository!
Who may help to find a GOOD workaround?
I may provide the export file of the Migration Workbench
    repository if needed.

    Vitaly,
can you use the sp_changedbowner with the parameter "sa" if the database you are migrating is not already
owned by "sa". If this does not help you, please send the error.log file which can be found in the
%ORACLE_HOME%\Omwb\logs directory as well as a zipped version of the repository, if possible,
to [email protected] and we will be happy to investigate the problem further.

  • Problem with capture

Hello everyone, I have a problem with capturing HDV tape, not that I'm doing wrong and I would like if possible someone could help me until now had captured no problem with the version Fine Cut Studio V.6, and captured clips are stored in the folder specified with the. mov, but now I'm doing it with version 7, and captured clips are stored as a Unix executable file and not as a video file. mov, thereby not You can open the file. Thanks for the help

Thanks, and can convert video files with a. Mov. But can it not be automatic unless it is misconfigured the "Easy setup" and the "Audio / Video Setting"?. I use a Canon camera that records in XLH1 HDV, which is the source of capture and compression I put Apple ProRes 422 (HQ). I tried several configurations but none can capture directly in. Mov, Can you tell me what the proper configración? recorded in HDV 108050i. thanks for your help Greetings

  • HDV Batch Capture Preroll

Others have had the problem of not being able to do effective Batch Captures due to the computer's inablity to locate the timecode (it seems especially true of Canon cameras and HDV--so, the XLH1). The solution is to just capture the whole tape and then delete the unwanted clips. I'm wondering if there is a smoother way of fixing this problem.
I can get FCP to batch capture as long as I'm willing to sit by the computer and tell it to "Continue" 3-5 times each time it has to fast forward. The computer fliddles around the timecode point until it finally decides that the timecode indeed exists.
Thus, it's not that the computer doesn't know what the timecode is at that moment. Rather, it seems to get hung up on just when to strat rolling so it can begin capturing at the right time. This, as far as I can tell, would be a Preroll problem.
So, is there a way to force FCP to give the tape a little more space and just start rolling? Or, could we petition for Apple to give the computer a bit more time? Or... something.
Any other ideas, thoughts, comments? Am I way off?
Sorry for such a long post.
    ~Luke

    Hi everyone,
Just thought i'd take a minute to post back and update the forum with the outcome. After many more tries and batch capturing with HDV and DV and in great frustration, I came upon a wonderful post (sorry can't remember who/where) in which the OP said they were having the very same issues as me. The solution was staring me in the face the whole time: Quicktime.
All I did in the end to overcome my problem was to plug in the camera, check QT preferences were set to source: HDV camera and Native resolution, then just hit play on the camera and start up a new movie recording!
This captures the tape in one complete clip. Though obviously it does not pull across timecode, and due to the nature of manually hitting play on the camera and record in QT, would make it difficult to reconnect media in the future, however it HAS successfully captured footage in its original resolution, ready to be imported into final cut and subclipped.
Hope this helps someone. It was by no means my ideal workaround, but having backed up the file taken from QT, has at least saved me this once!
    Thankyou for all your help,
    Best,
    Adam

  • HDV batch capture is making new clips...

    thanks for watching...
i have imported batch lists into FCP with name, media start, media end, reel and log note just as the FCP manual instructs. they import fine and i have them all in their own bins.
i batch captured a few tapes to day and i noticed that FCP is making new clips at times. for instance i'll have a clip "dogs" in the original batch list. after the batch capture there will be "dogs" and "dogs -1" the starting time code of "dogs" and the ending timecode of "dogs -1" are the original start and end of the clip. so, FCP has spit this clip in two for some reason. why is that?
i thought it might have to do with the setting "make new clip on Start/stop" thats listed in the clip settings tab of the log/capture window. so i made sure this was unclicked and then tried another batch , also making sure to uncheck "use original clip settings" in the batch window. but, the problem still persists.
i have 30 tapes to digitize and i'd prefer the clips matched the batch lists. any ideas i can try to solve this problem?
    take care,
    max

Is it a new media drive?
how is your media drive formatted? highlight the drive on the desktop and press command(apple)+i to get info...
Where it says 'Format' it should read Mac OS Extended... does yours say FAT 32 by any chance?
FAT32 is a different format that can be read by PCs and Macs... it can only store file sizes of 2Gb, so has the knock-on effect of causing FCP to break captures into smaller chunks.
If your drive is FAT32 you need to re-format it using Disc Utility. When you do this, you will lose everything on that drive, so back it up if possible.
If your drive is formatted correctly, post back with your media set-up, ie - what drives you use, how is your capture scratch configured etc.

  • Premiere Pro CS5.5 Batch Capture Problems

    Hi,
I'm sorry for the repost, but the older questions I can find on this topic won't allow me to reply and they were never answered (last post several months ago).
I'm having the batch capture problem with Premiere Pro CS5.5. Capture with device control works great when single capturing. When I log clips and attempt to batch capture, though, I get the "capture failed: device not found" error in my capture log. I have checked through the FAQ and the complete premiere manual on batch capturing. I've set my device (still using a Canon XL1) and even checked the video size...it matches that of my project (someone on another forum mentioned that this could be an issue). I have had no luck.
Could anyone tell me if this issue has been resolved, or redirect me to a resolution?
Thanks in advance for any help!!
    Steve

I have encountered this problem if the current tape position is beyond the last recorded point when you start the batch capture or if any "OUT" points are beyond the last recorded position or if the capture spans any unrecorded portions of the tape. I always thought it was my camera but maybe it is a PPro issue.

  • Batch Capture Problem with 5D mark II

At the end of an event we normally copy all cards to the HDD, each card in a separate folder. We then point FCP at the card folders and use log & transfer to ingest the footage and transcode to ProRes 422.
Once all the footage is ingested we save the project and copy it from the Mac Pro to the iMac so that a second editor can work on it at the same time. Because the iMac doesn't have a RAID we set all the footage to 'offline' and use batch capture to recapture it all in ProRes Proxy.
So far so good.... that is with all the Panasonic HMC footage.... BUT we recently started shooting on the Canon 5D2 and 7D as well and this simply isn't working.
For some reason FCP recaptures all the Panasonic footage but refused to re-capture the Canon footage. I can see all the files in the L&T window but it never seems to equate the footage with the files I am trying to recapture.
HELP! What could be causing this? It's only a problem with the Canon footage.
Both MacPro and iMac are running identical versions of FCP and identical (latest) versions of the Canon L&T plug in ..... and YES we copied the entire CF card to a folder - just like we do with the Panasonic HMC stuff.

Hi Andy, compressor is current chugging away, so we'll get going for the edit I am sure. Only 600 more clips to go
I've tried everything I can think of in terms of recapturing. Even on the original Mac Pro that the footage came in to, if I copy the entire project folder (including the 'cards' folder) from one RAID to another it fails to recapture in the original project using the original codec (ProRes 422), but if I point it back to the original cards folder it works fine. It seems to be 'moving/copying' the cards that is causing the problems.
I've checked the dates and sizes on the copied files and they are all the same, and since recapturing to the original project at the original settings doesn't work once moved I am completely stumped....!

  • FCP "general error" on hdv batch capture

    help!
i am trying to batch capture around 3k clips that went down when we installed a bad raid controller card that scrambled our RAID, and also 28 hrs of HD footie. OUCH!
anyways i'm trying to batch capture as much as i can to retieve our logging notes and rebuild some of our assemblies, but FCP keeps kickin me hard. after a reasonable amount of success, FCP generates a GENERAL ERROR message, leaving me unable to capture anymore (every time i hit batch capture i get the general error)...
I hate HDV n all, but i think this one is coming from FCP as after i re-install (3 hrs later), i can start crankin out the tapes again....
any ideas how i can avoid this boys n girls? its really killing me and making our sundance deadline of sept 18 a bit of a dream.

reinstalling FCP rarely fixes anything. If you want to be sure you have a good installation, you need to do an erase and reinstall of the system drive. This gets you a clean version of OSX, FCP and QT. If that doesn't work, you likely have a hardware issue.
    Good luck,

  • P2 batch capture problem

In short we keep FCP projects for each p2 card we unpack just incase we need to come back to them.
I have now had to come back to one to re-unpack the card at a different codec Prores 422 instead of Prores 422 HQ. I have encountered a strange problem all the files that are under 2GIG if you select them with batch capture open the log and transfer window and all is fine. But any files larger than 2 GIG FCP thinks its a tape rush and will only open log and capture so i cannot easily recapture them.
I have done lots of test with different cards, projects everything and get the same problem every time. Also this happens in our conform project too and i have tried it on 4 different computers on FCP 6 and 7 same problem every time.
I know i can easily re-unpack the whole card with out having to do this but this is a strange problem that shouldn't be happening and would like to solve it.
im running FCP 7 on OSX 10.5.8 processor 2 x 2.26 quad core intel xeon 8 GIG ddr ram
    any thoughts would be appreciated!

Sorry everyone. I just noticed a post two down with the same issue. Have read through it and I'm not sure there's a solution there for me, but I'll give a few things a try. Apologize for what the double post. Any suggestions would still be appreciated.

  • Batch Capture problems - can't read timecode

I want to log all my clips before capture and then just batch capture it all. Problem is, I get a message that the timecode can't be found.
How can I correct this problem?

I forgot nothing. My list is what is required to begin to log and batch capture. He didn't say it "started to capture but aborted midway through the first clip". He couldn't get started. We could go into a long list of tape based "do's and don'ts" but it didn't seem appropriate until we had some basic information.
We still don't know if the material was originally recorded on the playback cam and/or if he has ever successfully captured using this cam.
Don't you like playing 20 questions too? lol.
