Seriously slow internet on 1.6 Ghz iMac
My iMac has a serious problem when it comes to the internet and surfing webages. Our set up right now is an Airport hookup right under the desk. Signal strength on my iBook and her iMac are 100% on the bottom floor of the house. I have tested her iMac to my iBook and the results left my jaw hanging. Her iMac is running 10.3 right now while my iBook runs 10.4.
Most web pages take 10-15 seconds longer to load on her iMac. The longest load time I have had with her iMac is 28 seconds - that means after the webpage fully loaded on my iBook it took hers 28 seconds till it was fully loaded. I test the pages both with Safari, and both of our memory is maxed out (1.25 Gig iBook, 1 Gig iMac).
I have noticed when the load lag hits her fan noise speed up a little. Are there any web pages or sites out there I can test both computers on to see if there is a problem somewhere? I bought the extended warranty a few days ago, so once it arrives in the mail I will start calling apple and try to resolve this issue.
Is there anyone else out there experiencing the same problem? Thanks in advance for any help.

Super-slow internet browsing on brand-new iMac
I posted this somewhere else and got told to post it here - so here goes:
I just bought my iMac on Valentine's Day. I'm brand new to the world of Mac, and very excited!
However - I'm a little upset because it is taking FOREVER for websites to load on Safari - sometimes up to a full minute for a page to load entirely. Sometimes, it simply times out! My internet access is through broadband service provided by my cable company; all computers in the house (including my PC laptop) are wirelessly connected. No problems with any of them BUT the iMac. Also, all other applications on the iMac run very fast indeed.
I really don't think that at $1,500, internet browsing should be this slow on an iMac right out of the box!!! Is there anything I can do? Is this a known problem with a known fix? Or should I just take it back and exchange it? (and migrate all my old files AGAIN!)
Thanks for any help/advice you can give.Try the command under the Safari menu in Safari to +Reset Safari+. I would select all the reset options.
If that does not help, try downloading another browser as a test to see if this is a general problem or something specific to Safari.

How do you fix a slow internet connection?
Seem to have very slow Internet connection on my new iMac. Others devices in the house are fine. What's the fix here?
Thank you.Hi, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
10.4 instructions...
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

How to resolve slow internet on 2010 iMac
My internet on my mac is sooooo slow. I have another 27 imac right next to it and the internet speed is fine. Yes I have checked the router, Yes I have tested the connection speed,Yes I have done all of the basic stuff. I went through the apple recomended software troubleshooting pages and to no avail. I have tried to check the hardware but nothing happens when I hold the D button and my mac did not come with an install disk. No it did not. Some things seem to make it better for a little while like starting in safe mode, removing the cache folder from the library. Once Again these are only temporary. The speed really seems to bog down after loading about three or four pages. Need help please. The problem persists even on other accounts and on widows, through boot camp.
Anti virus software installed? Little Snitch installed?
Checked the router, but did you restart it yet? -
WIFI dropping all the time in Lion 10.7.4 or internet. I use an iMac 3.33 GHz Intel Core Dou
Remove the Norton/Symantec product by following the instructions on either of these pages:
Uninstalling your Norton product for Mac
Removing Symantec programs for Macintosh
If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different. Back up all data before making any changes. -
Problem: slow connection. I have an iMac (2007) running on Mac OS X 10.6.8. I just had my internet speed increased from 1 to 3 Mbps but my connection slowed down considerably. Do I have to change any setting on the computer, and how?
One possibility is that you may need to "Upgrade" your Cable /DSL Modem if you have an older unit. ISP's that provide your Internet service in recent years have been switching over from DOCSIS 2.1 version Modems to DOCSIS 3.0 version Modems, which handle the new higher data streaming speeds the ISP's are offering. I would suggest you call your ISP's Technical Support and inquire about this possibility.

I5 iMac slow internet after sleep
When waking from sleep my iMac has incredibly slow internet until I reboot it. Is this a known issue? If so, how do I fix it?
Hello,
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?
Any external drives connected?
Have Console in Applications>Utilities open & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens. -
Slow internet speeds on iMac running 10.10.3
Hey folks,
Hoping you can help me!
I have a late 2012 21.5" iMac running 10.10.3 and currently I've been getting very slow internet.
I've done some troubleshooting:
I've taken it to the Genius Bar and the airport card is fine.
I've reset dhcp lease which used to work but now no longer does.
Currently, my internet only gets normal speeds (about 100 Mbps down) when I delete my system config folder. Even after deleting it, however, it's only fine for a short period of time (usually a few hours) before it goes back to crawling speeds (usually the speed test ping test fails).
It's definitely not the hardware of the machine because it's picking up the wifi, it's not the router because the speeds are fine on my other devices and fine when I delete the system config folder, so I know it's software related. The issue does persist in a guest user or known good account so I know it's not user repeated.
I wanted to see if anyone else has any ideas to resolve the issue in the OS' current state prior to me just doing an erase and install. Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -

I Fixed my iMac slow internet connection
I will share with you how I fixed my iMac slow internet connection and frequently lost connection. At first, I thought it was the Airport but then it wasn't the case. I also had a Dell laptop in the same basement and it was running as fast as I expected. Here are the steps:
1/ Open Airport link on the top right window > Open Network Preferences
2/
Click + to create new Network Name and Security, I chose WPA personal - less security than the WPA2- that is why it runs faster.
3/ Go mack to step 1 and select your new network name > Apply.
May iMac is now connecting to internet as fast as I would expected.
Good luckMy iMac internet connection is not faster but as fast as it used to be. I was using WPA2 and it was really good for a year and then I got disconnected or very slow. So I created the new network bearing the same old name but use WPA and did not delete the old one, some how everything is back to normal.

not sure if that helps. but any ideas? because honestly it was a gift and I'm thinking of replacing it with a faster pc. It was a gift- and they offered this or a PC... and honestly- I like the mac (except this weird keyboard) but hate the slowness of internet. applications seem VERY fast. it's just the f-ing wireless. ugh. I have a wireless N server (belkin) which I now have only sending out G to help.
any thoughts appreciated. so sorry to bother you. hope you are well!
MAC Download
http://www.speedtest.net/result/478128069.png
download 1.86
upload 48
10ms ping
PC (that is over 5 years old with a 1.3 gig processer and wireless G)
dowload 7.60 (wow that's FIERCELY different)
upload .49 (wow upload is slow on both.)
14ms ping
thoughts? please help!
p.s. is my airport card a wireless G or B?There's no reason you should have slow connectivity with that Mac, but you haven't given any details about how your internet connection is set up, what you're using for DNS, etc. There are plenty of hints for how to fix your Internet connection in Leopard in these forums. You might start by manually entering an openDNS server to replace the one you're using and see if DNS resolution is the problem.

Slow Internet On 21.5 Inch 3.20GHz Intel Core i3
We bought another new iMac yesterday - a 21.5 Inch 3.20GHz Intel Core i3, to replace a 17-inch iMac G5 1.8 GHz (always a dream to work with but the screen was starting to fail). Updated the brand new iMac to 10.6.4 and every update listed. While downloading the software updates from Apple, we noticed that the Internet connection was about half as fast as the Power Mac G5, downloads very slow, taking forever. After finally installing all the updates, tried browsing the Internet and same thing - very, very slow performance. No wireless connection - just through an ADSL modem and D-Link Router which has been in use for years. When plugging the old iMac G5 back in, browsing the Internet on that machine is twice as fast.
Why would a brand new 21.5 Inch 3.20GHz Intel Core i3 have half the speed of the 6-year old iMac G5 when accessing the Internet? Happens on both Safari and Firefox (latest versions). We also have a 27-Inch iMac 2.66GHz Intel Core i5 which is lightning fast on the Internet. Is there something wrong with the ethernet cards in these new iMac 21.5 inch models? Perhaps settings we need to adjust? Or just a defective unit? Interestingly, the display model in the store where we bought ours from was also having the same problem - slow Internet. Thought it was just the store's wireless connection. Didn't dawn on me until now.Hi, are you talking about Wireless connections?
You could reboot your Modem & Wireless Router, Reset your Network & Channel selection-> try Channel 10 as opposed to Auto..
Delete the existing Networks from your new Mac, Drag the internet configpriv.plist (Library/Preferences) to your Desktop (Trash after Reboot & resetting your Internet)-- Reboot & reset up your network details on the new Mac.....
Other than that Return it & get a Replacement, check the Replacement out in the Store..L -
Rainbow spinning cursor and slow internet recently
I am not very tech savvy but I will try and describe what is going on. Recently (last week or so) my computer has been extremely slow and the rainbow spinning cursor seems to appear all the time. I notice it mainly when I am using the internet, mainly because I am mostly on the internet when I use my computer. I believe it is a problem with my computer because my husband has a 2011 MacBook Pro and he does not have any problems with his computer. My computer is a 2010 MacBook Pro, and I ran an Etre Check to see if it helps. I typically use Google Chrome as my browser (we both do) and my operating system is OS X.

Slow internet connection via AirPort on MacBook running 10.5.7
The internet connection via AirPort on my MacBook is frustratingly slow, and I have no idea why.
I have an AirPort Extreme connected to a Virgin Media cable modem, a new iMac and a two year-old MacBook, both running 10.5.7. No problems at all with the wireless connection on the iMac - I get the full near-10Mbps download speed I'm paying for, despite the fact it's at the other end of the house. Not so on the MacBook, where I get barely 2Mb, even if I'm sat next to the router.
I've had other AirPort problems since the 10.5.6 update - notably one common to a lot of people on here, it seems, of the AirPort dropping the wireless connection every 2 mins. This was only 'fixed' by the fairly drastic workaround of essentially abandoning my user account and connecting via a different one.
For the slow internet problem, I've tried resetting the PRAM, turning off my cordless landline phone, changing the wireless channel - to no avail. I can't test the wired connection as my MacBook doesn't recognise my Ethernet port, it would seem, and hasn't for a long time.
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance. For the slow internet problem, I've tried resetting the PRAM, turning off my cordless landline phone, changing the wireless channel - to no avail. I assume that you meant NVRAM as PRAM is not used with Intel-based Macs. Regardless, network settings are not stored here and resetting it won't really help. The fact that your MacBook is not recognizing the built-in Ethernet port is telling me that may have an issue with the system board ... that may be showing up as poor performance with the AirPort as well. I suggest that you take your MacBook in to your local Apple Store to have them take a look.
