Seriously!!!..why is Leopard dock, dashboard, expose so choppy???

On my brand new MBP 2.2 2GB ram, all of the graphics that were nice and smooth on Tiger are choppy and sluggish. Dock, dashboard transition, expose is choppy. I must admit I am extremely dissapointed. I have seen others experience this on forums, and it kind of makes OSX Leopard look like...well...windows.
Apple...PLEASE fix this quickly. It is soo frustrating when coming from a perfectly running Tiger...

Hi,
Since you use Cisco router you probably have a fair amont of network knowladge.
1. Make sure that all Macs are on the same LAN behing the Time Capsule (LAN side not WAN side). Also it helps if the Time Capsule is the DHCP server on the network. I suspect youmay have your Cis co doing this.
2. Make sure the time capsule is up to date - it should be if you do not ignore update messages on the Mac you run Airport to configure the TC.
3. In the Airport utility go to the Disk tab and enable File Sharing. Ideally password protected but not essential if you feel safe.
Provided you have all this sorted it shoudl work.
I have seen networks with Cisco routers where Apple computers where struggling to find themselves. This is down to broadcast issue Cisco / Apple.
But properly configured it should work.

  • Even though the general language are in english, why are my dock commands german? (mid 08 macbook)

i just uograded to the new lion, and its a good OS. but i checked that although the language is english, then why are my dock command optons in german? that is also the case with my mission control headings. is there a way to fix this?

hey mate, sorry for the late reply.
thanks once again for the suggestions - after trying all of them, nothing really worked!
in fact, the situation became worse, as my macbook crashed, had to restart in safemode, and now i cannot access my dock and any lion-based apps (launch pa, mission control, etc....)
I even took my macbook to a nearby macbook outlet (not store) and they said to wait for the new 10.7.1 update, and although the processor has become slightly faster, I am yet able to access my dock.
they store itself suggested that i should downgrade to snow leopard again, however i am abroad for a while and dont have access to my installation disk, and it would require me to transfer MUCH data (ironically a thunderbolt port would have been useful!)
have you got any other suggestions? and any other poster would be truly welcome!
    Cheers

  • Keyboard glyphs (dashboard, expose, etc)

I'm looking for the glyphs that are on the Apple Keyboards for dashboard, expose, etc. I found this tip Symbols I can't find in Unicode, but it's geared for Snow Leopard. How do you change the font in the character viewer in Mavericks to show these?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jeff

Many are in the Technical Symbol section of the Character Viewer:
Here's how to get the viewer in the menu bar:

  • What is the story on mac vulnerability? Is it serious or not serious?  If not serious, why is this not being explained?  If serious, why are Mac users not being informed of the risk?

what is the story on mac vulnerability? Is it serious or not serious?
If serious, why are we not kept informed
If not serious, why is some much anxiety being created?

IMO, it is being greatly over-blown in the media and online.
Man in the middle attacks require the hacker to be connected to the same intranet network that your device is.  Even if they are, unless you go to a secure site and use personal data (like passcodes) they get nothing from stealing your data stream.
If you are at your home, on your own secured intranet, then you really have virtually nothing to fear (as long as your own home network is secured and not wide open to anybody within range).  If you routinely use a VPN connection when on public wifi, again, you are fine.  Or if you use FireFox, Chrome or another browser that implements its own SSL security, then you are fine.
The fact is, that even for those in a particular situation that is vulnerable to such an attack, most are not actually under any such attack - it is not nearly as rampant as the recent hype would have it seem to be.

back in the days of leopard, the dashboard widgets would come to the foreground but you could still see what you were working on.  Now I've updated to mountain lion and the work is no longer visible when I activate dashboard.  Can I change that back?

Go to system preferences, mission control, and unselect "Show Dashboard as a Space".  While you're there, you may want to make dashboard set to a hot corner "Hot Corners" button at the bottom.

  • Dock, Dashboard and Background Not Opening

Today I tried opening dashboard from the dock, dashboard refused to open, and the dock disappeared. I wasn't able to get either to work from Finder, so I restarted. After restarting, the background had gone from my set image to the default blue, even though my preferences still say it is set to my set image. The computer was NOT restarted in safe mode at this time. I have no idea of what is going on or how to fix it. Any help?

It may be a LaunchServices issue at any rate it can do no harm. Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line:
    Code:
    <pre class="alt2" style="margin:0px; padding:3px; border:1px inset; width:640px; height:34px; overflow:auto">/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/\Frameworks/LaunchServi ces.framework/Support/lsregister \-kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user</pre>
Then press return. After that, log out and back in or restart.
    EDIT:
If that's not it, you may be able to repair this with 10.4.10 Combo Updater PPC
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • Leopard dock isn't 3-D

I recently upgraded from Tiger to Leopard on my MacBook (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo), and installed the 10.5.1 update. The dock isn't 3-D - it's flat, just like the Tiger dock was. It appears to have all the other Leopard Dock characteristics, it's just . . . flat.
Any idea what might be going on? I looked in the CoreServices folder, and it shows that Dock.app is version 1.6.
I don't really have any preference as to which dock I use. I'm wondering if this indicates there's a problem that's going to become a major issue at some point in the future.
    Thanks in advance.
    Dick

Open up the terminal and type in this command and hit enter:
defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean NO
    Then type and hit enter:
    killall Dock
In a second or so the dock should reappear in 3d.

  • Cleardock BACKGROUND BEHIND LEOPARD DOCK! I NEED HELP!!

Omg, I just installed Leopard and I totally thought that there wouldnt be a problem removing cleardock after installation. But right now, theres the cleardock background behind the new Leopard dock and I CANT REMOVE IT! I've removed application enhancer and the cleardock app so many times and ITS Still there.
    Please help!!

    Hi slend0r
Not sure I know the answer, but some questions:
Can you say what the background looks like? Sure it's not the reflective shelf that's a part of the Leopard Dock?
And have you tried restarting after removing the enhancer and cleardock?
And you say that you've removed them several times. Do they reappear or refuse to be removed?

  • Lost Preferences, Dock, Desktop, Expose, Dashboard, Minimize

So I updated iTunes and Quicktime on my PowerBook G4 1.25 last night, followed by the mandatory restart. Then I put my new printer software on and played around with Adobe CS2 and printed some things off. When I got tired I shut down and crashed on the couch. I awoke with a cold. Seems my Mac had a crash of its own and awoke with a cold too.
It worked fine for a while, until I began working in Dreamweaver...it just froze. When I finally forced a shutdown (after a half hour) I restarted to find that my dock missing, my desktop image gone, Expose inactive, inability to minimize and no Dashboard.
I don't know what to do. Please help.

I just started having this same problem after Firefox crashed the Finder somehow. I've tried repairing the disk, repairing permissions, trashing com.apple.finder.plist and systempreferences.plist, and nothing's working. It happens in all the users on this computer. I tried reinstalling the 10.4.9 update and the latest security update, because I think this happened because I hadn't yet restarted from installing the security update when Firefox crashes. However, the 10.4.9 update didn't help, and it won't actually let me reinstall the security update.
Were you able to fix this, or does anyone else have any suggestions? Bit of a crisis here...

  • NO Dock or Expose, NO Background! PLease Help

Around 11:00 this morning i received Leopard. I installed just like it said, let it run through everything, the computer rebooted and then no dock, no background, no expose, no dashboard. Nothing with these seems to work anyone have any idea. I tried to reinstall and the same thing.

I found that a document in my documents folder was crashing my dock repeatedly so i simply moved my documents folder and renamed it.

  • SLOW macbook white - exposé, dock, dashboard, everything!

I've always been wondering why my mac gets relatively slower than I expected. It has 512 MB of ram, and recently I've been thinking whether I should get a 1 GB chip to replace one of my built-in 256's.
I've read these claims from apple that it's supposed to run like 5x faster than the ibook or powerbook. But I have this feeling that my friend's older powerbook runs even faster on the same amount of ram. I'm the type of person who likes opening a large number of programs at the same time, and that just doesn't work with my macbook right now.
I especially hate how the dock's magnification feature gets too slow sometimes. Exposé and the dashboard also work slower than usual at times. Another major problem is Microsoft Office, which I understand is still running under Rosetta. I've also tried using Adobe CS2, but it was simply impossible so I had to uninstall it. Right now I'm using Chocoflop, a universal freeware version of photoshop.
Do you think upgrading to 1.25 GB would solve all of these problems? It will cost me a lot, so I'd like to try out any other possibilities for now.
Macbook White Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Ditto!!
The reason I bought a macbook in the first place was because everyone who owns a mac raves about the speed and ease of use and the fact that you can open lots of programs and keep them open.
This macbook has slowed down, frozen, restarted and generally caused me more frustration and hasel in the 2 weeks that I have owned it than my poor quality Dell laptop ever did.
A waste of money buying the mac??? I really hope not!
It makes me extremely grumpy to think that I now need to spend extra money to upgrade a brand new product only to get it to run like it should!
    Boo!!

  • Leopard Dock

Ok I have just a quick question. I was at Best Buy today and noticed on there Imac display they had a different dock on leopard than there other Imac and the Macbooks. The dock they had on display was something like a black mirror compared to the one that I have on my macbook. My question is what is that and where can I get it.
    Thanks

Hi Everyone ... I am quite new to MAC and would love to change my dock to a better looking one. I have looked and found one on leoparddocks.com and read & written down the download instructions. However, I am a little nervous, as I don't want to mess up big time, when I get to the bit in the resources folder where it says move those original files to the trash & replace with the downloaded ones, there seems to be more files in the one that I am moving to the trash than there are in the new download? Would my current dock icons need to be re-applied to my new downloaded dock and is that why the old folder contains more items? Sorry if I'm not making myself clear enough here, but anyone who could give me a step by step idiots guide :-/ from the bit where I would need to backup my files, would be appreciated.
    Thank you x

  • My Dock or Expose doesn't work on my MacBook Pro...

    Hello,
I've been having issues with my MacBook Pro and I need some help immediately.
    The current issues are:
    - My Dock doesn't show up on desktop
    - My Expose doesn't work
    - When I tried to minimise opened page it freezes at weird shape (I can still force quit the programme)
    - Some function of searching in finder is behaving funny
What I can think of I've done wrong in past hours:
    - I tried to install Winebottler as I wanted to open Windows.exe file for my work
    - I did install them and opened them, from Winebottoler I tried to install 'Windows Media Player 10'
    - It automatically started to installing but during that computer started to behave funny
    - So I tried to uninstall Wine and Winebottler from Application, deleted them and empty the trash
    - Still having the same issues so I went Application folder to see if there's any Windows related app left that I just installed.
    - When I scroll down to the bottom, the finder closes it self off and reopen Application folder!
    - Also when I try to search 'windows media player' on the finder it closes itself and it doesn't let me serach it.
Is this some kind of bug? I thought Mac wouldn't get virus but maybe I was wrong.
Tried to turn the computer on and off again, or restart, or relaunch the finder, it just doesn't work.
I need to fix this ASAP so please give me any solutions if you think of any.
    Thank you!

What about holding down the shift key? What about holding down the c key and booting to the OS installer disk?
