Server 10.3.9 - Three NIC cards - Route between Three subnets

I have a panther server with three nic cards, each one connected to a different network.
xx.xx.1.x = private intranet used for storing video files- Has a DHCP server
xx.xx.2.x = company intranet used for internet access-
xx.xx.3.x = editors intranet
I have a NAT set up to forward network activity from the .3 to the .2
But the editors (.3) also need to access .1.
Is there a way to connect the .3 to the .1 network through the server?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Here's a picture to show what I'm trying to say.
http://www.kbdiondemand.org/client_files/routing.png

Here is my newest routing table. I cleared everything out and started over.
I have NAT enabled and it is working, but I removed the private address.
http://www.kbdiondemand.org/client_files/routing3.png
I'm starting to wonder if I need to create a divert rule in the firewall. NAT has a firewall divert rule to send traffic to the NAT service.
So far, I haven't gotten the syntaxt correct for creating the divert rule. The error message is the port is incorrect?
I haven't found the information on any of the panther server books out there. They shy away from using the server as a firewall or a router.
excerpt from Essential Mac OS X Panther Server Administration
Of all the things that a packet filter can do, Apple seems to have some pretty specific things in mind for the Firewall service in Mac OS X Server. Panther Server's Firewall service is targeted at protecting the server on which it is running. Configuring a firewall for this purpose is very different from configuring a firewall designed to sit at the border between a network and the Internet. Mac OS X Server is simply not well-suited for the tasks normally performed by a dedicated firewall.
For example, Mac OS X Server needs to be rebooted for things like software updates, and does a fairly poor job of routing packets during the reboot. Surely you could configure Mac OS X Server as a router and then never touch it so that it wouldn't have to be rebooted, but that means no software updates. Just because Mac OS X Server can act as a router; that does not mean it's the most cost-effective or functional solution. Trying to shoehorn Apple's Firewall service into performing duties that it wasn't intended to provide is generally not a good idea.
Apple also includes a Network Address Translation (NAT) service that works in conjunction with the firewall. This service could be used to provide Internet access to a workgroup by allowing the workstations to share the server's IP address. While the NAT service does work, better results may be found with the average $40 NAT router. The bottom line is that it's a very good idea to use dedicated network hardware, and not a personal computer, to perform critical network functions like routing. This reduces network downtime due to computer maintenance such as software updates.
I will focus on using Apple's Firewall service for protection of services running on our server, and not to do routing or NAT for other computers.

  • 2 NIC Cards in PowerMac G3 Server running OS X Server 10.3?

    Hello all,
I have installed a D-Link PCI Network Adapter, Model #DFE-530TX+, into one of my G3 Servers (Blue and White - Yosemitie) running OS X Server 10.3.
I booted and then installed the driver provided on the vendors CD and then rebooted. I get an error at desktop saying that the driver cannot be used because it was installed incorrectly, although I followed D-Links instructions to the T.
I visited D-Links website and there is a different driver available for Mac OS 10.2x. When I install this one, same error.
Apple System Profiler does not show that there is a card installed in the respective PCI slot. I have tried both remaining slots.
Is there something obvious that I'm missing concerning installation of a secondary Ethernet connection in this machine? I have been told that OS X Server 10.3 doesn't need the driver installed at all, it should just pick it up.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
    PowerMac G3 Server-Blue-and-White

A tech friend of mine suggested that I run the MacOSXServerEssentials.pkg located on Disc #2 of the OS X Server installation discs. Since the D-Link card functioned under the client version of OS X 10.3.9, if I ran the OS X Server Essentials package and upgraded a client to a server, it should retain the PCI card information. I tried to run the package and was told that I needed to have a minimum of OS X 10.3.9 client installed. I had not installed the Combo Update, therefore, I only had OS X 10.3.2 client installed. Once updated to 10.3.9 client, I ran the OSXServerEssentials package. Once complete it did not ask for a restart and was still booted into the OS X 10.3.9 client version. I did restart and am glad to report that I am now running OS X Server 10.3.9 with two NIC cards on a PowerMac Blue-and-White G3.
    Thanks again for your suggestions,

    Hi
For list network cards that was sometime registered in system:
    grep network /etc/path_to_inst | awk ' { print substr($3,2,length($3) -2 ) $2 } '
ifconfig -a show all network interfaces that curently configured
For check that interface that was listen at first comand available or not: Try
    ifconfg <interface_name> plumb
    ifconfg <interface_name> unplumb
Do not touch already configured interface or lost network connection.

  • Belkin pre n to belkin wireless card bridged to nic to router to emac

Ok, so I have a wireless router (Belkin Pre N) getting it's signal from a comcast modem. One other port is hardwired into my upstairs neighbors computer (PC running windows xp pro SP 2). That computer is generally off.
My set up is an old PC (running win xp pro SP2, 500mhz, 184MB Ram, AMD-K6) which has a belkin wireless G desktop network card with a compaq nic card. I use the network connections window to bridge these two together on the PC. The nic on the PC goes to a "network everywhere" 4 port cable/dsl router (with the firmware updated). The ethernet cable goes from the PC's nic into the 3rd port of the router and the other ethernet cable on port 2 goes into my emacs ethernet port.
Now, I can maintain some connectivity in this manner for my emac. The problem is that I have to leave the network prefs window open to click the "renew DHCP lease" button every 5-10 minutes because I am just suddenly not connected to the network. The odd thing is when I refresh the ip nothing changes. I just get my connectivity back...
Worse, ultimately, I'd say every 4 or so hours, suddenly my PC loses it's wireless connection and stops seeing any neighboring wireless connections (there is many, I live in Chicago) and the bridge suddenly starts getting it's ip from the router between my pc and mac instead of from the wireless card that was connecting to the upstairs belkin pre N. Essentially the network starts working in reverse!. I've tried using the network everywhere router as just a router or even setting it with a static ip with the dns and router configurations from the belkin pre N. I get awesome throughput but in 5-10 minutes it always degrades to nothing on the mac. It is to the point that I keep the network prefs window open on the mac and just periodically click "renew DHCP lease" basically the whole time I am using the internet or downloading something.
Now once the PC loses it's wireless connection I've found the only way to get it back to the way it was is to disable the nic, the bridge, then the wireless and then enable them in reverse order (wireless, bridge, and nic) and it goes back to working correctly... usually once going back to the mac and clicking "renew DHCP lease" I then have 1 more addition to the last number of my ip. Like 192.168.2.3 would then be 192.168.2.4 and so on this continues. The highest I got before reseting all including the router was .2.30
Does anyone know why this is or have a similar set up?
    G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   400 Mhz 576MB SDRAM

Easiest solution, get a wireless adapter for the eMac.
Sounds like you don't have ICS configured correctly, and it can do this when using a wireless to wired connection.

    Stelios

    Stelios,
We have had issues when trying to load balance between the NICs. when in active/active, the virtual MAC reflects in both the connected switch ports, and the packets tend to loop between the ports. There will be a lot of Spanning Tree TCNs generated, which can shoot up the CPU. We had a 4507R with SUP IV, which got loaded to 70% when doing load balancing. when we made it active/standby on the NIC, the CPU came down to 1 %...
so just be careful on this. best way of doing it is active/standby
hope this helps.. all the best.. rate replies if found useful..

  • LYNC EDGE Server NIC Card Setup

    Hello Guys,
I need Your help about setting up the NIC on my EDGE server. I already gone through the article about Set Up Network Interfaces for Edge Servers. as I understand there
are 2 NIC required on each EDGE server (1 Internal facing 7 another 1 is External facing).  I just wanted to confirm is there any option to do this with only 1 NIC card or can we configure EDGE with 1 NIC only.?
    Thanks in Advance.

    Regards Rishi Aggarwal

Possible?  Yes, I do this on occasion against recommendations and best practices for companies who simply can't or won't set up a second DMZ (please don't split the NICs between your internal network and DMZ, it's just bad security).  Everything
mostly seems to work just fine.  But, recommended and supported? No.
Here's an article from David Paulino who's also been through it:

  • Setting Up Dual NIC Cards? Benefit?

    Hello Everyone,
I know that the Mac Pro line comes with Dual NICs and I was wondering how do I set these up to be useful with my Cable Modem and Router? Can they be used to get more speed or are they used together in some other capacity.
I really appreciate anyones help and expertise.
    Many Thanks,
    Chris

The normal use of dual nic interfaces would be to run double instances of a given server on disparate IP numbers. Dual NIC's are generally employed in order to attach multiple IP addresses to a single machine.
Another potential use for dual NIC's is internet connection sharing, where your Mac Pro acts as a kind of router; again also this could be used for attaching one NIC to print services and the other NIC for LAN/WAN access.
OK, actually there are a whole bunch of good reasons for dual NIC cards, but 'doubling your bandwidth' is really not one of them. Believe me, unless you are on a direct fiber OC-10 20 foot from your ISP's NOC, then your existing single NIC has 1000 times the bandwidth of your incoming WAN connection.
It is likely possible to interleave dual NIC cards between two machines for bandwith purposes; but if that were going to be the canse, just identify one as "in" and the other as "out" (both machines would have to have dual NIC's to make this mean anything) but again, I honestly do not see a real world use for this...

This is pretty slow, isn't it? I think the NIC card on this server is

  • How to route traffic across subnets when one NIC is a hyper-V virtual switch?

Having a bit of a problem with a hyper-V environment which does not seem to route network traffic on two different subnets between each other.
If it were a purely physical server with two NICs and a gateway set traffic would automatically be forwarded between the two different subnets.
However when one of those NICs is a hyper-V virtual switch this simple routing no-longer seems to work and no traffic gets forwarded between subnets?
    Situation is:
    Hyper-V server with two NICs
    NIC 1 = 192.168.0/24 - main Internal company network.
NIC 2 (hyper-V virtual switch.) = 192.168.1/24 - connects to ADSL internet router
    Virtualized Domain Controller.
One or two virtualiszed NICs as necessary
How then does traffic get routed between these two subnets?  If RRAS has to be configured to do this where is the best place to do it, on the hyper-V host or on the virtualized domain controller?
    Thanks,

    Hi ,
You can create an internal virtual switch and configure an IP for it (I assume it is 192.168.1.2/24) .
After you enable RRAS in hyper-v host  there will be two gateways for different subnets  .
    " NIC 2 (hyper-V virtual switch.) = 192.168.1/24 - connects to ADSL internet router "
The problem is here ,if  these VMs need to access internet .
So , these VMs can not configure their gateway same as the IP of internal virtual switch , you may set VM's gateway as the ADSL internet router's IP meanwhile add a static route entry for every VM .
Please refer to the Syntax :
    route add -p 192.168.0.0 mask 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.2
    Hope this helps

  • Server and router on different subnets

    Hello
    Scenario 1.
A Server with one NIC assings DHCP addresses within the 192.168.1.x/24 network.
The internet router is on the 192.168.0.x/24 network.
How can the DHCP clients can access the Internet?
If the scenario requires adding another NIC, no problem.
    Thanks
    Kostas B.

Please explain your network setup further.
If you really need two subnets you must route between them and that could be achieved with OS X and two network interfaces.
Also if not using NAT in the server you need a static route in the Internet router pointing back at the second router IP on the same subnet and using that as the gw IP for the second subnet.
If you want to use VPN later using other network numbers is better.

  • Having 2 NIC Cards

I have installed a second network card in my power G4 and I need to configure this card with a static IP; however, there is no where to do this (or at least I can not find it). I have the on board network card configured and working. Any suggestions?
I know if I was running os 10 then I could use UNIX commands to do this however I can not afford to do this at the present time.
    Thanks
    Power g4   Mac OS 9.2.x

    Hi Manikandan,
You can use two network cards but if you installed B1 when this two network cards has been configured to enable, the B1 application run will have slow performance. So, you must disable one of network cards, restart the B1 server and run the B1 again.
If you need the NIC card that is already disable, you can enable again. It won't give slow performance.
my answer is  quoted from SAP note 1135705:
SAP Business One takes too long to log on users
    Symptom
SAP Business One client (not installed on the same machine as the
license service) might take several minutes to log you on successfully due to a delay in establishing a connection with the license server.
After logon, SAP Business One functions as expected.
This is due to the fact that the server or PC on which the license server is installed has more than one network card, or there is a dial-up & VPN interface-configured server.
Note: This can happen when you install the license service on a machine with more than one network card ALREADY installed.
Installing additional network cards on a single network card machine with a license service already installed might not produce this issue.
    Other terms
SAP Business One, slow, login, log-in, delay, license, server, NIC, VPN, connection.
    Reason and Prerequisites
    Application error.
    Solution
This issue is a candidate to be resolved in a future release.
Until then, you can use one of the following workarounds:
Disable additional network cards in the Network Connections. Also make sure there is no dialup interface or VPN interface set up, and restart the server. Note that you can re-enable the additional network card after the restart. This will resolve the issue until the next restart.
Install the license server on a machine with a single network card.
Disable all network cards, restart the license server and then enable the network cards again.

  • IP Failover between nic cards, not servers

This maybe a very simple question, I just haven't found the answer to it...
Our Xserve's are running on a Cisco switch and a switch port for the primary NIC card of one AFP server recently failed.
While the server had both cards connected to the switch and the second NIC card was live, the users lost connectivity to the internal server address (internal DNS) as is was pointing only to the primary IP address of that server.
This makes sense as there was no mechanism to tell the server to start using the secondary IP address.
We are now planning to connect all secondary NIC's to a second switch for both the LAN and the DMZ (VLANs) for better redundancy.
The DMZ uses IP addresses only due to port forwarding.
My question is now what is the best way to continue services on a secondary NIC if the first NIC fails.
Add a new DNS entry for the LAN? If so, how? Just enter the secondary NIC IP with the same server name?
    Use FAILOVERBCASTIPS for the DMZ?
IP Failover works great between machines, but can the server send heartbeat messages to itself (example: FAILOVERBCASTIPS="NIC1-IP NIC2-IP")?
Is there any way to maintain the mount status of AFP volumes during the switch of IP's (since it's still the same machine)?
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Xserve G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Since you're using Cisco switches and are already familiar with VLANs, your simplest solution would be to use link aggregation to create a trunk between the Mac and the switch using both the NICs, then configure VLANs so that both subnets use the trunk interface rather than the physical interfaces.
That way traffic for either IP address can traverse either NIC, and you get automatic failover (thanks to link aggregation) should either NIC fail.
Note that this will only work if you're connecting to the same switch. If you have 'internal' and 'external' switches this won't work without some re-architecting of the network topology.

  • Load balancing over multiple NIC cards

Is it possible to setup some kind of load balancing at the OS level on a V240 running Solaris 8?
I've got all 4 NIC cards populated (2 each on different subnets with clients coming from both subnets and elsewhere) and I've like to setup some load balancing at the operating system to (dynamically) route the load across the most appropriate interface. Is this possible? I feel I should be getting more bang for my buck here, but I just cant find any info on what I'd like to do.
    Thanks for the help.

You can use IPMP in order to have load balancing for the outbound traffic. It's working fine, i have used it on many machines.
Now, if you want to trunk the throughput of your interfaces (for inbound and outbound traffic), you need to acquire sun trunking software. It can truncate up to 8 100Mbps interfaces, or up to 2 1Gbps interfaces.

  • Do I need (or do I even have) a NIC card? Modem works, comp not responding

    Hi All,
Recently we have been experiencing connection problems with our cable modem and Mac. We've had our cable company out several times and I finally believe they have resolved any problems on their end.
Currently all of the cable modem lights are on (normally indicating we should be able to connect) and we are still not connecting. During a phone call to one of our cable techs he asked me to pull up System Preferences and click on Network. Upon doing this I then, under the "Show" drop down menu chose "Network Status". He and I were both surprized that the only thing that showed up in the dialog box was Internal Modem. There was no "Built in Ethernet" which is how our modem is connected to our Mac. He said that Built in Eternet should be there and that I need to get a new NIC (Network Interface Card) to resolve the problem so that the computer can communicate with the modem. Makes sense to me.
My question is this: Is there such a card for a Mac or was he referring to a PC type of card that performs that function. From my converstion with him he is obviously somewhat conversant with Macs (or had good scripts, prompts to read from) so I left our conversation thinking he knew what he was talking about. Is this a piece of hardware or software? I got the impression from him it was a piece of software that needed to be reinstalled. Lastly, where would I obtain the software/hardware?
Sorry about the long post. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Vance

Both of the G4 Macs you mentioned have built-in Ethernet on the motherboard. They would not require a PCI card to support this function unless the built-in Ethernet hardware on the motherboard were defective (this does not happen often), or you wanted to run much faster than the speed provided by the built-in Ethernet (not generally needed unless you are using a File Server at your location).
You already have a top-notch Apple brand Ethernet interface. Do not let your ISP talk you into installing a different PCI-slot NIC card unless you are certain the motherboard Ethernet is defective.
