Server 2003 to SBS 2011 Error

Hello, I am migrating a customer from Server 2003 64bit with Exchange 2007 to SBS 2011.
I installed SBS 2011 in Migration mode,  The install has completed. But in the SBS console there are no users or computers listed.  I have done this migration from SBS 2008 many times and they are always there.  But this is the first
time from Server 2003.  Also, When I try to open the "Migrate the server program in the console it says that only supports migration from Small business server.  I am pretty much stuck at this point as the migration guide doesn't mention
anything like this.
if I go to Active Directory Users and computers they users and computers are there.
Brian

I'd use the 2nd link, it seems complete.  Its for SB2008 but it should apply to SBS0211 as well.  Just make sure you have good backups of the source server in case you need to start over (I'd personally virtualize it and run a test migration).
Just make sure your answerfile was correct when you installed SBS2011.  Note because you are coming from server 2003 the standard SBS OU structure won't be there which is why the SBS console won't see the users or computers.  You'll need to
fix this up but I'm not sure if you should do it early on or last...

  • Migrate from Standard 2003 domain with seperate Exchange 2003 to SBS 2011 - possible? how-to?

    Hi there,
I am currently planning on replacing two servers (one server 2003 standard (DC) and one server 2003 standard with exchange 2003) with a single machine running SBS 2011.
I already did several migrations SBS 2003 to SBS 2011, SBS 2008 to SBS 2011 - and I am wondering if the same can be done from 2003 Standard with separate exchange server 2003 to a single SBS 2011. Technically I can see no reason why this shouldn't work -
but so far I have been unsuccessful in finding guidelines or at least some success-stories from other users.
Did anyone do something like that? Any caveats I have to be aware of? Or is it supposed to be flawless as the SBS to SBS migrations I did so far?

    Hi,
From the problem description, I understand that you would like to migrate Exchange server 2003 on Windows Server 2003 to SBS 2011.
At first, I would like to clarify one thing. Microsoft doesn’t have the official documentation towards this scenario. And Microsoft doesn’t
    recommend dealing with that.
I noticed that there are two servers in your organization. One is Windows server 2003 for DC; the other one is Exchange server 2003. So it can’t
be the same as the documentation (Migrate to Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard from Windows Small Business Server
    2003).
I got your key point that you would like to know the detailed procedures (HOW TO). I suggest that you could visit the
SBSmigration.com to get further information you need. Since it’s not the Microsoft official method,
please do the test before your put it into your production environment.

  • Windows Server 2003 R2 SBS

    Hi,
I have WS 2003 R2 SBS running on 4 year old hardware, and this morning integrated LAN card stopped working.
I inserted new PCI lan card, installed needed drivers, but I can get any incoming traffic with that new LAN card.
Windows Firewall disabled, RRAS is running, and what shold I check, and where, to get my network working again.
    Thanks in advance
    Best regards, Goran

    Hi Goran,
On current situation, please check if you can ping an outside IP address from the SBS server. Any error message?
When you inserted the new PCI LAN card and installed all needed drivers, did you re-run Change Server IP Address
wizard (Server Management-> Internet and E-mail->Change Server IP Address)?
If this issue still persists, please run
SBS 2003 BPA and fix all that it can find. Meanwhile, please open Event Viewer and check if can find more relevant events.
    Hope this helps.

  • Windows 7 / Server 2003 Roaming profile synchronization error at logoff (ntuser.pol)

    Hi all,
I have implemented Roaming Profiles for a few test users on Windows 7 PC's (Windows Server 2003) and everything is working well aside from one error I'm seeing at logoff ('Your roaming user profile was not completely synchronized.  See the event log
for details or contact your administrator.')
The event log reveals event ID's 1504 and 1509.  1504 is flagging the fact that Windows cannot update the roaming profile completely.  1509 shows the following:
'Windows cannot copy file C:\Users\jtest\ntuser.pol to location \\server\Profiles$\jtest.V2\ntuser.pol.  This error may be caused by network problems or insufficient security rights.
DETAIL - Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
    Other observations:
This issue occurs with all test users upon each logoff attempt except for the very first logoff, where there is no network share copy of ntuser.pol to get in the way.
Prior to logoff, the network share copy of ntuser.pol has an older timestamp than the local copy.  This is not a cause or symptom but it leads me to believe updating the network copy of the file at logoff is normal/required behavior.
If I delete the network share copy of ntuser.pol prior to logoff the error does not occur.  I don't suspect file permissions are the cause since I used the same user having difficulty logging off to delete the network share copy of the file.
ntuser.dat has no problem overwriting itself upon logoff.
I was able to repeat the problem with two windows 7 clients.
I've been all over the usual suspects (i.e. group policies affecting roaming profiles, file/folder permissions, installed every hotfix relating to roaming profiles and folder redirection, and googled every keyword) and came up empty.  I confirmed offline
caching for the profile share is disabled.
Does anyone know what may be going on here?  I'd greatly appreciate a point in the right direction.  Thanks in advance.

You could too run a process monitor to watch what happen. With filter you can easilly configure it on the server to not log everything except read|write on the profile.

What I have done to try to troubleshoot this issue is:
    Reinstalled DPM - No sucess
Restarted the Hyper-v Host - No sucess
I'm at the point where I am out of ideas and google hasn't given me much.
    /Joseph

    i have the same error.
"vssadmin list writers" shows last error unknown for all writers
    disk space is sufficient
ntbackup of systemdrive and systemstate runs fine.
i installed KB940349 which fixes some vss related issues but the problem is still there.
    any ideas?
    Thanks.
When you have vssadmin reporting unknown error the only way to reset the vsswriters (as I understand it please correct me if I'm wrong :) ) is to restart the machine. The Fellenator is correct, make use that the vsswriter is working correctly since this
is the main function DPM is using when taking backup. He's also right in saying that it's outside the scope! Create a new thread on your error, then you will get much better responce!

  • Adding a 2012 r2 server to an SBS 2011 network

I have an established SBS 2011 network. Remote Web Access is activated and works fine. FQDN is: server1.companyname.com
I added a 2012 r2 server (to be used as an RDS server) and have joined it to the network. Name of this server is: server2. I can access the published apps on the server from within the network by going to IE and typing https://server2/rdweb.
However, I cannot access the server from the web and although I tried a few different suggested methods from various forums, including wiping and reinstalling the OS twice, I have not been successful. I know I am missing something
very important in the setup, not sure what though. And then is the certificate issue.
Is there a step by step process that somebody can help me with, or point me to, to configure the RDS sever to work with the SBS network? I would like to see my users accessing published programs on the RDS server from within and outside the network by
using the RemoteApp and Desktop Connection applet.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    Thanks for posting.
There are a couple of options here, assuming i am understanding your question correctly, and that you want to allow connections to https://server2/rdweb from the public internet.
If this is the case then i would recommend you use the remote desktop gateway service installed on a separate server. It sounds like you have an all in one setup currently with the RDWEB role and session host on the same server. Whilst you could put the
gateway role on this server it isn't recommended for security reasons.
The other option you have is to allow connections directly from the internet by forwarding https and tcp389 from your firewall to your server - this isn't really recommended as it is a security risk.
Im not overly familiar with the setup provided by SBS, but my understanding is that it uses a pre-configured / customised version of the remote desktop gateway role. So you can't use this server.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks
    Denis

  • New Dell Server with OpenManage Essentials adds SQL Server 2012 Native Client to existing SQL Server 2008R2 in SBS 2011

Had to upgrade my server to new Dell T320. Support wanted me to install OpenManage Essentials which unfortunately installed SQL Server 2912 native client. Now I have 2 sqlserv apps running at the same time.
Is there a problem with SBS 2011 Standard running two different SQL Server native clients?
I have no idea why Dell OpenManage did not use the existing 2008R2 native client, but that is the way it is.
Can I combine or upgrade the database so they all use one and not both?
    Thanks
    Gerald Fay

    Hi,
I have asked some who similar the SQL product, in general you can install the different version SQL client on the same operation system, but when the OpenManage Essentials
install a SQL instance on your SQL server, it will automatic upgrade same SQL component to the newer version.
For example, if your SQL server is 2008r2, you install the OpenManage Essentials built-in SQL instance which version is higher(such as 2012), by default it will automatic
upgrade the same SQL component to SQL 2012, I don’t similar with the OpenManage Essentials
tool, I think you can ask DELL® support for the further support.
    Thanks.

  • RD Gateway Server Credentials in SBS 2011, new prompt in RWA

    Hey All,
I know this has been asked and answered in one way or another, but I am having difficulties finding the answer. I have several SBS 2011 Standard clients and most use RWA to remote connect to their desktops. Just recently, one of them, it started to prompt
for the RD Gateway Server credentials. If the user puts in domain\user then password, they are then handed to the next sign in and then they have access. For the past 2 years it has never done that before. It is not so much of a problem, but an annoyance to
have to login 3 times before having access to the computer. This happened to my SBS box and I fixed it when addressing another issue, but I don't know how I did it. Any help would be great.

Did they check the box to save the password in the RD Gateway Credential prompt?

    Hello,
You're asking a development question.  Your post would be better suited for the Development | Other category of the forums.
Did you upgrade your ASP code to use the CR XI runtime files?  Migrating the code from a CR9 deployment to a CR XI (v11.0) deployment without upgrading the code isn't expected to work.
You'll either need to upgrade your code, or downgrade your version of CR.
    I hope this helps.

  • Sudden Server Infrastructure Licensing errors SBS 2011 Standard install (10 months old)

The following errors began about a month ago and I can't figure out how to fix it.  I especially don't like that it states the server will be shut down in 22 days.  When I rebooted the server last week the problem went away for exactly 24 hours
then came back and seems to report every 4 hours.
    Background:
Fresh SBS 2011 install last Dec. 7th (2012).
We did have an SBS 2003 server but it was never on the same network.  We simply backed up the data off of its data drive.  Exchange was backed up via OST to PST conversion then imported in.  Only 10 - 12 users.
HP ProLiant server and the SBS 2011 DVDs were OEM supplied by HP but we installed NOT pre-installed.

  • Is SBS 2011 the right choice for replacing Server 2003 Terminal Server?

Reading license options has done my head in so going to ask for recommendations here if SBS is best option, as every option seems to have pros/cons.
Need to upgrade a 2003 Server which has 2 local users and average of 10 remote users (max 15 users).  They use remote desktop to connect with everything on a single server (on its last legs now).  Server acts as DC, runs SQL Server 2008 R2 Express
(need to upgrade from Express to SQL server Std shortly due to size), Microsoft Office, Myob, and a couple of proprietary applications.
I'm thinking SBS 2011 is best option as with premium add-on will include SQL Server licenses, so it's looking the most cost effective?
    So the questions;
In an ideal world what would you suggest as a replacement for the current setup?  (As is, with apps installed on server and remote users using Remote Desktop, or can SBS 2011 offer better solution?)
Can you install Microsoft Office 2003 under SBS 2011 for all users to use with existing licenses?  Cost of upgrading server and O/S will probably rule out upgrading Office as well at the moment (though that's the long term plan).
or.. Best way of running Office and app for SQL Server on local PC's with VPN link?  (may have issues with response times for some locations).  I gather DirectAccess won't be an option as needs multiple servers and clients are Windows 7, but just
    Win 7 Pro, not Enterprise.
Appreciate any advice....  this is for a small business with a few locations that is just getting big enough to require an upgrade, but small enough that funds as always are limited.  Realise what I'm asking about maintaining current setup using
Remote Desktop is probably not best practice, but is it most cost effective given the small size?

    Hi:
There is no easy answer, and a lot depends on what you do with your email.  SBS made email very easy, but without it, the decisions are harder and more costly.  O365 and other hosted email systems are low cost of entry but they add up over time.
Pop3 is cheap, but not very robust or convenient.
SQL introduces another wrinkle.  SQL express is free and is good for databases up to 10 GB.  If you are well within that limit I would do that and not incur the expense of SQL Server.  If you need SQL server, the PAO is the best way to
acquire it, but you will need a physical box to install it, unless you do Hyper V as below.
SBS does not allow for remote access to itself to run programs.  Only for admin purposes.  Full stop.
In an ideal world I would suggest SBS 2011 and Server 2012 running as VM's on one beefy server.  Install Server 2012 in HyperV role only, then install SBS 2011 as VM1 and Server 2012 again as VM2.  The license for Server 2012 allows 3 installs
of the same license, one as host and two guests.  If you need a third server you can install the same copy of Server 2012 again as a second VM.  Not that all three installs must be on the same box.  This third VM could also be the Server 2008
from the PAO, but iirc the SQL version that comes with the PAO only checks that there is a SBS in the domain, not what OS it is being installed on.
So, for the cost of one pretty beefy server, one copy of SBS 2011, one copy of the Server 2012 and, if needed the PAO and RDS CALs and Office CALs you should be covered.
Don't forget a robust firewall to protect all of this.

  • SBS 2011; Exchange ActiveSync problems in the middle of a migration

    Hi
We're in the middle of a migration from SBS 2003 to SBS 2011 and are stuck in the lengthy process of moving users' mailboxes.
At this point, I have about 20 percent of the users' email on the SBS 2011 box, and the rest still on the SBS 2003 box.
Right now I have to quickly deal with an issue that's cropped up with Exchange ActiveSync:
I ran the Connectivity Analyzer for a user (this one's box had been migrated) and got the error below. By the looks of the error, I don't think it matters where the mailbox happens to reside ...
The SBS 2011 box has been set up using a migration install and the procedures listed in the MS migration docs.
At the rate we're going, it's still going to take a while to migrate these mailboxes. (The fact that they began tonight was actually an accident.) If mobile users can't get their mail, I'm going to have a big mess on my hands ...
What do I need to do to get this running properly for all users?
    Thanks
    CL

    Hi --
Neither of the Exchange servers is publicly listed as the mail handler for this domain. Mail is preprocessed by a cloud spam filtering service before coming down. So I expect no changes in MX records -- not even a change in the spam filter's delivery IP
address, since that points to my firewall. I'll forward SMTP traffic to the new server when the time comes.
I was told by MS that moving the mailboxes would not disrupt anything as long as both SBS boxes were up and running. And despite what the Connectivity Analyzer showed, people in this office have been receiving email on their mobile phones all day. I've had
a few sporadic reports of people supposedly not getting email on their smartphones, but I can't see how anything I did (basically just move mailboxes at this point) could allow some people's phones to get mail while others' can't, when everyone was getting
    mail yesterday.
I also have an odd report from someone who claims that his mobile phone is processing email just fine, but his MacBook running Entourage suddenly can't connect.
Oh well ... The day is over (at least for the workers). Hopefully by the time the workers return on Monday, I'll be back to having just one SBS box on the network.
The mailboxes are being moved A LOT faster than any of the documents I read warned me they would. One document said that a 75 GB database could take close to 48 hours to transfer. And this server's Exchange database was 67 GB ... But last night's
"accident" (I thought I was only prepping a new database when in fact the machine was actively moving email into it) resulted in about 40% of the mailboxes being completely moved by 8 a.m.. And since 5 p.m., when I restarted the move requests,
the machine has completed the moves of about 20% more mailboxes. So I expect this part to be over probably by early morning. (The ones that remain are the really big ones -- still, after I spent a week doing mailbox housekeeping.)
I was also warned about the lengthy conversion requirements for the public folders. I transferred those last weekend. The whole process was over with in less than four hours. Go figure ...
(The public folder transfer did have an annoying side effect -- I kept receiving warning after warning via email from the SBS 2003 box about a high number of items in Exchange's send queues ...)
    Thanks
    CL

  • SBS 2011 OK but OWA unavailable

We have migrated from SBS 2003 to SBS 2011 this weekend and are now on page 73 of the migration documentation (we have NOT clicked the last step to 'Complete Migration'). Our users are logging onto the network successfully this morning (about 50),
documents are being directed, Exchange to Outlook working, etc. Overall, very little pain so fa this morning.
Last night, after returning home, I logged into remote successfully. All items work EXCEPT OWA. I install my user name and password in the login screen and then I receive a 'HTTP 500' error with the message 'Can not display Page. Most likely problems are
the page under maintenance, or a programming error'. Once at work I tried the same using the remote address (https://remote.domainname.com) and have the same error. I used on my computer in the network to browse
to OWA (https://servername/owa), same error as above. Thinking it may be a certificate error, I downloaded the certificate installer from \public\downloads and tried to install it on my local computer. The installed
opens to the page where it asks where to install (computer or mobile device), I choose 'Computer' and an error message pops up saying that it can not install the certificate.
Do I need to run the last 'Migration' step before OWA issue will be resolved? Or is there another issue?
    Best Regards,

    Thanks for the reply, Susan.
The certificate is the self signed cert. I have not closed my 'Complete Migration' wizard yet (the last step is all that is left; does it actually do anything or just give you the next instructions on removing the SBS 2003 server?), and was a little afraid
to run the fix my network wizard. Any problem at this point?
If the next step in 'Complete Migration' is just more docs without other maintenance happening behind the scenes, then I will complete that and run fix my network.
    Best Regards, Mark
