Server 2008 and Backing Up

Hi, I have a few questions if anyone here can shed some light for me. I'm not the most technical minded person but from a friends advice I purchases a server for use at home. I have 5 home computers/laptops and he thought this would be best for backups and
accessing shared files etc. He is away at the moment so can't help with my current issues.
Basically I have the server set up running 2008 R2, I am able to access the server on the network with one laptop so far (not tested others), I managed to share a folder and have both read and right access to this folder from my laptop. I understand that
only windows professional/ultimate computers are able to perform network backups, only one of my machines is professional (current one that can connect to shared folder) and the others are home/premium editions. 
Do I have any other options available for network backup like using a domain etc?

If the 5 home computers/laptops and the server are not in a domain, you need to give administrators of the home computers write permission to access the shared folder. When you create a backup on one home computer, you need to backup to a network location and
type the server 2008 r2’s credential. 
If the 5 home computers/laptops and the server are in a domain, users on the home computers can directly access the shared folder without using the server 2008 r2’s credential.

  • Cannot install Crystal Reports Server 2008 and Client Tools on same machine

    I am having trouble setting up Crystal Reports Server 2008 with Client Tools on a new Windows 2003 SP 2 machine. The Server 2008 package installs OK (built-in MySQL server, built-in Tomcat 5.5 server). Reports run okay. But my customer wants to run reports that use Salesforce as a data source, so I tried to install Crystal Reports Server 2008 Client Tools (needed  for Salesforce support, apparently). I receive this error:
    'Business Objects product detected: cannot continue with install'. Installation of Client Tools immediately terminates.
    Oddly enough, when I uninstalled Server 2008, the Client Tools installed successfully. Then I tried installing Server 2008, and I got the same error message as with Server 2008. What the heck?
    Any ideas on how I can get Server 2008 and Server 2008 Client Tools to live in harmony on the same machine? We were able to do this with a (otherwise overloaded) Win2K3 server before.

    Typically the client tools are installed with enterprise by default. If not then you would want to use add/remove in control panel and select them. The installer thinks you are trying to install enterprise on top of itself and thus the error.

    Anyone knows why .cfm files would not get indexed by Indexing Service on windows server 2008 and IIS 7.0.  This is a coldfusion website using Indexing Service for site search.  There are a lot of cfm pages indexed as unknown files.   Any clues on how this can be fixed?

    You might try editing your registry so that *.cfm, *.cfc, and other ColdFusion related files are treated as text files by the Windows search feature.  See link below.

    can you repair system file errors like  ntoskrnl.exe in windows server 2008 and 2012  like   like before  in windows server 2003 ?
     the steps were  repairing ntoskrnl.exe  error in windows server 2003
    1- have a 2003 cd and from that cd  start recovery console and copy from i386 directory ntldr and ntdetect.com to  windows /system32 directory on the  server and then repairing
    2- MBR with fixmbr command  and then  rebuild BOT.INI file  with bootcfg/rebuild . 
    now my question  is how you repair or solve such problem with ntoskrnl.exe error  in windows server 2008 and windows server 2012

    What will take a lot of time? Repair or clean install? These days one can standup a new VM and have an operating system on it in around 20 minutes or so.
    Correct server 2003 is file based deployment and completely different OS from repair perspective as well.

  • Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 - ?? for replication with Oracle

    Hello:
    I am running Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 - 64 bit
    I need to replicate data between the SQL 2008 and Oracle 11.2 ?? with Oracle being the publisher
    I also would lile SqlPlus installed on the server.
    I need a definite answer as to what I should download from the Oracle download area. There are just so many packages and so many version I dont know what to download.

    Oracle does not announce release dates and neither
    does any other software company.But Oracle does have a very good track record of supporting their products on new windows releases extremely close to the windows release date. Clearly they can't support on an unreleased platform though. Given that the launch of Server 2008 isn't even complete worldwide yet (19th March in the UK for example) it would seem that this enquiry is a little premature.

  • Sql server 2008 and Windows 8

    Hi
    I published my WPF application using VS 2010 Express edition and trying to install it on Windows 8.  The application runs but when it comes to searching the database that was included in the installation package it gives the error
    "This program has compatibility issues Microsoft SQL Server(2008 and 2008 R2)"
    The installer when setup was run did download SQL Server so I am not sure why I am getting this error.  Any advice?

  • Windows Server 2008 and Firewall Logging

    Our Windows server 2008 R2 domain controller does not appear to be logging anything into the windows firewall log: c:\windows\system32\logfiles\firewall\pfirewall.log.  The file is always blank.  Every 2003 server and 2008 R2 non-dc work fine. 
    I'm a little stumped.  The firewalls are configured via GPO's and appear to be applied ok. 
    I compared the 2003 and 2008 configuration and did notice one discrepancy:
    The 2003 windows firewall service runs as the local system account.  It's effective permissions to the pfirewall.log file is "full control"
    However, the 2008 firewall service runs as "LOCAL SERVICE".  This account has read-only permissions to the pfirewall.log file. 
    I haven't changed anything as this is a production server.  I was hoping for some guidance before I start changing default settings.  Any ideas why the pfirewall.log file is always blank?

    Generally, C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\Firewall\firewall.log has the following permission settings:
    NT SERVICE\MpsSvc:(F)
    NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(F)
    BUILTIN\Administrators:(F)
    BUILTIN\Network Configuration Operators:(F)
    Please make sure MPSSvc (Windows Firewall service) has Full Control on this file.

    This worked for me on a 2008 R2 DC that had somehow dropped the MpsSvc account off the Permissions list. In my case the pfirewall.log file wasn't even being created, so I had to modify permissions for the "%systemroot%\System32\LogFiles\Firewall"
    folder.
    Adding the MpsSvc account can be tricky if you're not familiar with where to look. Here are some supplemental instructions that might prove useful to those like myself who might not do this type of thing every day. Remember that these instructions for for
    a 2008 R2 Domain Controller.
    Open the "%systemroot%\System32\LogFiles\Firewall" folder. If necessary, "Click Continue to permanently get access to this folder."
    Right-click the empty space in the Firewall folder and click Properties.
    Go to the Security tab and click the Edit button.
    In the "Permissions for Firewall" window, click the Add
    button. The next step is where it gets tricky.
    Click the Object Types button and in the window that opens, make sure the
    Service Accounts box is checked. Click OK.
    Now click the Locations button. In the window that opens, make sure you change the default selection from the domain name to your Domain Controller's hostname (e.g. DC01).
    Click OK.
    In the object names text field, type "NT SERVICE\MpsSvc". If you were to simply enter "MpsSvc" it wouldn't work. This is not case sensitive, but the context of your entry is very specific.
    Click Check Names and your entry should automatically change to an underlined "MpsSvc" value.
    Click OK.
    Back on the "Permissions for Firewall" window, you can give MpsSvc
    Full Control of the Firewall folder, then click OK.
    You'll see a warning about changing permission settings on system folders. Read it, and if you accept the risk, click
    Yes. (Otherwise click No and enjoy your non-existent firewall logs.)
    Click OK again to save your changes and close the
    Firewall Properties window.
    You may have to restart the Windows Firewall service before the firewall log file will appear.
    You should also run a "gpupdate" just to make sure your settings are permanent and aren't being overridden by a GPO somewhere out there in Active Directory.

    - Apple iMac (Late 2010, Arbeitsplatzrechner) mit Snow Leopard per Lan über AVM Fritzbox 7270 an Microsoft Windows Home Server V1 (Windows Server 2003)
    Alle Betriebssysteme sind auf aktuellem Stand.
    Die Fritzboxen laufen mit der jeweils aktuellen Firmware
    Nun zu dem Problem:
    Beide Macs unterbrechen ca. alle 30 min den Kontakt zum Server. Die Verbindung wird zwar ca. 1-2 Minute später wieder aufgebaut, aber am MacMini (HTPC) macht sich dadurch bemerkbar, daß der Film oder die Musik für obige Zeitspanne stoppt und danach weiterläuft. Beim iMac (Arbeitsrechner) kann ein zuvor vom Server geladenes Dokument dann nicht mehr gespeichert oder gedruckt werden.
    Der MacMini hat dieses Phänomen direkt bei der Verbindung mit dem WHS gezeigt. Der iMac hat jedoch zuvor ca. 1,5 Jahre ohne Probleme funktioniert. Dieses Problem tritt bei dem iMac (Snow Leopard) erst seit ca. 6-9 Monate auf.
    Da unterschiedliche WHS und OS X Versionen betroffen sind und auch unterschiedliche Fritzboxen verwendet werden und scheint ein allgemeines Problem im Zusammenspiel Windows/OS X vorzuliegen.
    Bei dem iMac fällt der genaue Zeitpunkt der Verbindungsunterbrechung nicht auf.
    Bei dem MacMini läßt sich der Zeitpunkt dagegen relativ leicht bestimmen. Aus der Ereignisanzeige beim Windows Server ergibt sich leider kein eindeutiges Fehlerbild. Zu dem jeweiligen Zeitpunkt taucht aber relativ oft, aber nicht immer (!), in "Windows-Protokolle Sicherheit" der Fehler 4625 ("Fehler beim Anmelden eines Kontos") auf. Dies würde auf eine Rechteproblematik hindeuten. Das Konto des Mac kann aber alles was ihm auf dem WHS erlaubt ist.
    Beim Suchen nach einer Lösung (bisher leider erfolglos) bin ich u.a. auch über das Problem des Server Infrastructure License Services (silsvc) beim Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials gestolpert (auch alle 30 min!). Vielleicht ein Zusammenhang?

    I run the office and at home each a Microsoft Home Server. In both networks, in addition to various Windows computers, a Mac is available.
    The particular "configuration" is as follows:

    Now to the problem:
    Both Macs are loosing every 30 minutes the contact to the server. The connection is "re-"established about 1-2 minutes later. On MacMini (HTPC), the film or music is stopped for the above period. Thereafter, the film / music goes on. With the iMac (workstation) a document loaded from the server can no longer be saved or printed.
    The MacMini has shown this phenomenon directly in connection with the WHS. However, the iMac has been working about 1.5 years with no problems. This problem only occurs for about 6-9 months
    Because of different WHS and OS X versions are affected and also different Fritz boxes are used and it seems to be a general problem in the interplay Windows / OS X to be present.
    When the iMac is the exact date of disconnection does not occur.
    With the Mac Mini, the time can however be determined relatively easily. From the Event Viewer on Windows Server is unfortunately no clear error image. At the particular time but appeared relatively often, but not always (!) In Windows Security Logs the error 4625 (Failed to log on an account) on. This would indicate a rights issue.
    Searching for a solution (so far unsuccessfully, unfortunately), I stumbled over the problem of the Server Infrastructure License Services (silsvc) in Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials (every 30 min!). Maybe a connection?

    My reason for not posting this in the server forum is that I suspect it is a clien issue. All my other clients connect happily to the server which leads me to believe the server is configured correctly.
    Only my the two MacBook Pro's are having problems.

  • Data services with SQL Server 2008 and Invalid time format variable

    Recently we have switched from DI on SQL Server 2005, to DS(Date Services) on SQL Server 2008. However I have faced an odd error on the query that I was running successfully in DI.
    I validate my query output using a validation object to fill either Target table (if it passes), or the Target_Fail table (if it fails). Before sending data to the Target_Fail table, I map the columns using a query to the Target_Fail table. As I have a column called 'ETL_Load_Date' in that table, which I should fill it with a global variable called 'Load_Date'. I have set this global variable in the script at the very first beginning of the job. It is a data variable type:
    $Load_Date = to_char(sysdate(),'YYYY.MM.DD');
    When I assign this global variable to a datetime data type cloumn in my table and run the job using Data Services, I get this error:
    error message for operation <SQLExecute>: <[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Invalid time format>.
    However I didn't have this problem when I was running my job on the SQL Server 2005 using Data Integrator. The strange thing is that, when I debug this job, it runs completely successfully!!

    The ETL_Date is a datetime column and the global variable is date data type. I have to use the to_char() function to be able to get just the date part of the current system datetime. Earlier I had tried date_part function but it returns int, which didn't work for me.
    I found what the issue was. I don't know why there were some little squares next to the name of the global variable which I had mapped to the ETL_Date in the query object!!! The format and everything was OK, as I had the same mapping in other tables that had worked successfully.
    When I deleted the column in the query object and added it again, my problem solved.

    Hi Karthikeyan,
    This is not the issue at all. I can open the management studio by the same login id and password and also i can make the database jdbc connection from plain java file.
    It does not give me any problem by them.
    I'm unable to find the actual problem. May be i'm missing something in connection pooling.

  • B1 with SQL Server 2008 and SEC with SQL Server 2005

    Hi,
    we are currently upgrading from B1 2005 to B1 2007. With B1 2007 we could use MS SQL Server 2008. In parallel we have a SEC implementation (which uses SQL Server 2005).
    Would there be any issues with the integration of B1 and SEC although they run on with different SQL Server products?

    By creating two different instances you can run both simultaneouly. But pls do check whether SEC will run on 2008 or not ?

    There are many books out there that cover Windows server 2k8 and its R2 successor but i wonder which ones to focus on. In the same time, all books are for one purpose, "Windows Server 2008". Each author has his/her own view on the platform. I don't
    want to read them all just to avoid confusions and complications.

    Thank you for the reply. My goal is to read everything (ins and outs) about Win 2008 and R2 platforms before i jump into Win 2012. I have pretty good experience in certain roles in Win 2008 such ADDS and ADCS. As clarified, i've finished a good number of
    books but i want to make sure that i didn't miss a single piece of information that maybe covered in another book.
    Honestly, i find the Technet docs are informative but daunting. On the other hand, books written by authors are more friendly because authors can throw jokes while explaining a certain technology, which makes the reader more attracted to the topic. In addition,
    examples, practices, labbing, and quizzes in the books are more fun.

  • Group policy Preferences server 2008 and windows 7

    Hi I have been struggling with an issue with group policy preferences for a while now with regard to pushing out printers to windows 7 (32/64 bit) Machines. I have two DC servers one is 2008 and the other is 2008 r2. I have setup the group policies on the
    2008 server as it is the only one i am allowed to access regularly to do this.
    Basically here is my problem. I have created multiple GPO's to send out printers from out print server to classrooms across the school district I work for, I have a mix of xp and windows 7 machines. I have the server setup with both 32 and 64bit drivers
    for all printers on that server, we have a mix of oki and hp and ricoh. I know all the connections work and the drivers work well, however when I push them out using the group policy, the windows 7 machines don't install the printers. The xp machines do this
    perfectly well when I install the client side extensions patch, but they just will not pull down on the 7 machines unless i install the printer first manually, then delete it and then run gpupdate. In that instance it will work, but obviously i don't want
    to have to go round thousands of computers doing this manually.
    Just as a side note, each classroom has its own user account and its own printer.
    If anyone has any advice as to how i can go about resolving this issue i would greatly appreciate it, this has been a problem i have been researching and trying to fix since January.......

    Before going further, we can run command
    gpresult/h gpreport.html with admin privileges to collect group policy result on the troubled Windows 7 clients to check the issue. Besides, we can also check event logs in Event Viewer to see if some related error events were logged.
    Besides, I want to confirm if we have disabled
    Point and Print Restrictions under both User Configuration and Computer Configuration. To have a consistent experience, it’s recommended that we disable the policy setting in both locations if we are dealing with mixed-level clients.
