Server 2008 R2 : How to force a NIC to keep his profile (Public, Domain, Private) ?

Hi,
I have a weird issue on 2008 R2. I just finished installing a 2008R2 server, with 2 NICs. I did not change any setting, except IP addresses. I configured the following IP addresses :
- NIC1 : 192.168.0.1
- NIC2 : 131.107.0.1
The weird thing is : The two NICs automaically merge in the same Network Public profile. If I join the server to a domain, the 2 NICs again join the same Domain Profile.
I wanted to install DirectAcess. But ; DirectAccess does require one of the NICs be identified as having a Public Profile.
I did read some interesting articles on "Network List Manager Policies" GPO. But these did not help me avoiding the merge of the two profiles.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,
Thanks for your posting.
During a search for a domain controller, the Locator attempts to find a domain controller in the site closest to the client. When the domain that is being sought
is a Windows 2000 or later domain, the domain controller uses the information stored in Active Directory to determine the closest site. When the domain being sought is a Windows NT 4.0 domain, domain controller discovery occurs when the client starts and uses
the first domain controller that it finds.
It’s almost impossible to specific Domain Controller in one site for workstations. Active Directory has its own DC locate mechanism, we can’t interfere
manually.
We have a workaround to achieve that: create a new site, and then move your 2008r2 DC to the site. Modify IP configuration of your test clients with the same subnet
of your 2008r2 DC.  Then these clients will contact its closest 2008r2 DC.
Or for test reason you can shutdown other DCs, leave the 2008r2 DC only.

  • Server 2008. How do I create a task to turn the server on at a specific time?

    I'm running Server 2008 R2 Standard, SP1.
    The electricity is scheduled to be turned off in my building for a couple hours over night.
    I can shut the server down, but was wondering if there was a way to 'schedule' my server to turn itself on at a specific time the following morning?
    Thank you

    Hi,
    Windows cannot turn itself on. it can resume sleep, but even then relies on the underlying hardware to do the boot.
    i would recommend checking whether the BIOS (or EFi for that matter) supports scheduled boots
    Alternatively, you can check BIOS whether you can configure the powerstate the computer needs to be in after power is restored; most computers do support that.

  • Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V guests lose NIC after recent Windows Update

    Hi Folks,
    I have  a Windows 2008R2 Hyper-V server with 20 guests.  They have been using a standard network adapter for 2 years.  Last night after running this months windows updates on a number of the guest VMs, each running Windows 2008R2 some of these
    adapters disappeared.  That is they are not visible in "network adapters" on the guest VM, the static IP configuration is gone and instead the VM had a dynamically assigned IP shown in IP config to a Microsoft VM bus network adapter #2.
    The other machines that didn't have updates run on them and have adapters visible show a Microsoft VM bus network adapter.
    I don't see anything obvious in event viewer.
    I've done the basic "reinstall integration services" but it still doesn't show a configurable network adapter.
    I've uninstalled the windows updates and "reinstalled integration services" no luck.
    Does anyone have recommendations on next steps?
    I'll update the post as I move forward.
    Thanks,
    Ivan

    Hi,
    Could you try to show the hidden device in the device manager, you can refer the following article to show the hidden device:
    How to Find a Lost, Missing, Hidden or Removed Network Card (NIC) or Other Device and Even Remove it
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/danstolts/archive/2010/09/25/how-to-find-a-lost-missing-hidden-or-removed-network-card-nic-or-other-device-and-even-remove-it.aspx#sthash.z6jSu8tZ.dpuf
    If you can see the lost NIC adapter then try to remove it uninstall it then rescan the device to see if there have the virtual NIC adapter found.
    Hope this helps.

    Dear All,
    Can you Please tell how to install a software SQL Server 2012 from the Host to my Guest OS Windows Server 2008R2 in my Virtual Machine? I am using VMPlayer and have already created a VM using the Windows Server 2008R2.
    I just need help in installing another software (SQLServer2012) from my laptop(guest computer) to my host VM. I also have the files downloaded into my C drive of my laptop(hostcomputer) for the SQL Server 2012. But I am lost as to where to click to install
    this software to my VM.
    I know I put into  Windows Server 2012 forum but I thin the procedure should be similar.
    Thank-you

    there are few options,
    you can copy the files from your host to virtual machine
    you can create a iso file and mount it to vm
    you can share the source files and access as a share

  • How to create a Web Authentication Meathod using Server 2008 r2 ?

    HI, i am a NewBee in Server Managment. am using windows server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition, with 2 NiC One is Connected to modem other one connected to Lan , using ICS for internet . i have 80 client computers , all clients have access to unlimited internet,
    i want to control them without 3rd part application, or  Create a Web authentication username and Password for users , is there any possible way to create a web authentication server in server 2008 r2 ? plz give me a proper guideline.....

    Hi,
    According to your description, my understanding is that you want to configure web authentication that allow the client to connect to Internet by password and user name.
    I am afraid that no function within Windows Server 2008 R2 may fulfill your requirement.
    For better control of your clients, I would recommend you to configure the Windows Server 2008 R2 as an RRAS (dial-up) router(use NAT to assign private IP address for the internal network), and connect to the clients with intermediate device, such as hub,
    switch. Cooperate with NPS to provide authentication for network connection.
    3rd party software/device should be needed for configuring web authentication. Here is a deployment scenario just for your reference:

  • Unable to see SQL Server 2008 option in Designer

    Hi Guys,
    We are using SQL Server 2008 and BO XI R3. While creating a new universe connection we can see (under microsoft) SQL Server 2005, but not the SQL Server 2008.
    How can we see the SQL Server 2008 option. Do we need to change some settings in BO or SQL Server?

  • Multiple logon for Microsoft Server 2008 R2

    I currently work for the U.S. Government as a System Administrator.  I'm in the middle of an inspection on my system and one of the inspector asked me about multiple logon for Microsoft Server 2008 R2.
    How many times are you allowed to logon to Microsoft Server 2008 R2 before it lock the system?  And also if I'm the system administrator what is the limit on logging to different systems with my account.
    These are questions that I do not have an answer to and I couldn't find any assistance on the Tech Support website.
    Thank you for your assistance.

    Hi,
    If you mean how many users can log on the same computer, this is limited by the resource:
    If You  refer system administrator as domain administrator, domain administrators have full administration rights to their domain.

  • VDI 3.4 Inegrate with Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory

    OK,I follow the official documents step by step,I installed the vdi 3.4 in Oracle Linux 5.7(oraclevdi.jiayutester.com),then installed a window server 2008 r2 64bit(jiayudc.jiayutester.com) that made it to be the Domain Controller(jiayutester.com) and DNS,at the end,I edit the /etc/krb5.conf.I execute the following commands:

    forwardable = true
    krb4_convert = false
    Then,I login to the web console to set company, I select Active Directory to use as User Directory,then I fill up all the needed information(I am sure that all the information I fill in the form is correct),when I click the next,error occured....it's the context:
    Unable to Connect to User Directory
    Failed to connect, no servers available
    Now,I searched everywhere for information,but I can't resolve the problem...Please help me,smart guys

    Would probably need to see your VDI instance cacao log file to see why this is failing, but you might need to add the following to [libdefaults] section of your krb5.conf file, for 2008R2 AD server:
    default_tkt_enctypes = rc4-hmac
    default_tgs_enctypes = rc4-hmac
    And then restart VDI services (/opt/SUNWvda/sbin/vda-service restart)
    Note that VDI will actually try to query individual AD servers as defines as part of your AD Global Catalog when it tries to lookup AD domain data. This means you need to verify that your global calalog referenced servers are valid and having matching forward and reverse DNS information:
    For example:
    $ *nslookup -querytype=any gc.tcp.vdi.com.*
    Server:          win2008.vdi.com
    Address:     192.168.1.100#53
    gc.tcp.vdi.com     service = 0 100 3268 win2008.vdi.com*.
    $ nslookup win2008.vdi.com.
    Server:          win2008.vdi.com
    Address:     192.168.1.100#53
    Name:     win2008.vdi.com
    Address: _192.168.1.100_
    r$ nslookup 192.168.1.100
    Server:          win2008.vdi.com
    Address:     192.168.1.100#53
    100.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa     name = win2008.vdi.com.*
    You'd want to verify that every record returned by the *nslookup -querytype=any gc.tcp.yourdoamin.com* command refers to a server that can be reached and has matching forward and reverse DNS. Otherwise, this may trigger VDI to have failures or delays in performing directory queries.
    Beyond that, you need to look in the cacao.log file for errors that you can find and post.

    Windows server is DNS Server, also DHCP, File, Print, AD. Windows boxes connect fine as do linux, just not SL, unfortunatly we bought family packs of SL and upgraded all machines, bit of a silly thing to do now i think of it, but it wasn't me on shift, ARGH!!!
    I think i need to post on a Windows Server 2008 forum about DNS, i am now certain this is the issue not snow leopard, could be to do with WINS also.
    Thanks for the help, if you know of any good free windows forums it would be great!!!

    Try just soulstinger.com as the AD Domain value. Also, did you confirm that DNS and time are working properly. They are the primary causes of failure. Use a local time server on your LAN, probably the domain controller.
    Also, you can put DirectoryServices into a debug state and get better information from the bind attempt. Do the following before you attempt to bind:
    sudo killall -USR1 DirectoryService
    This will create a new log file in /Library/Logs/DirectoryService called DirectoryService.debug.log. Watch that file using tail or Console and filter for errors.
    Hope this helps
