Server 2008-R2 Hyper-V VM dont update physical CD-ROM

Hello guys,
I got a Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V role installed.
I attached the physical CD-ROM to my Hyper-V TS server because the users would like to use CD-ROM's.
Normally this works like a charme..
Now i can only see the old CD-ROM as it just wont refresh.
Anyone got a clue where to find a sollution?
With kind regards, René de Meijer. MIEGroup.

Hi,
Could you try to show the hidden device in the device manager, you can refer the following article to show the hidden device:
How to Find a Lost, Missing, Hidden or Removed Network Card (NIC) or Other Device and Even Remove it
http://blogs.technet.com/b/danstolts/archive/2010/09/25/how-to-find-a-lost-missing-hidden-or-removed-network-card-nic-or-other-device-and-even-remove-it.aspx#sthash.z6jSu8tZ.dpuf
If you can see the lost NIC adapter then try to remove it uninstall it then rescan the device to see if there have the virtual NIC adapter found.
Hope this helps.

  • Adding nodes to Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Cluster..

Currently we have a 3 node Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Cluster in production. There are about 3 terrabytes worth of VMs running across these nodes.
It is over-committed, so i've setup two new nodes to add to the cluster.
I've done this before in a SQL cluster but never a Hyper-V cluster.
If I don't run validation when adding the nodes, will there be downtime?
The quorum is setup for disk majority, everything is identical on all nodes that needs to be. Shared storage is recognized and ready on the new nodes. I've gone through every checklist that Microsoft has. I'm just curious if the virtual machines will go
offline on the current nodes when i add the two new nodes.
Everything is identical down to the wsus updates installed. From networking to storage everything is perfect.
I don't want to run validation as I know that'll take everything offline.

    Hi,
It is recommend to run a validation test. You can select custom test. (skip storage).
When add the new node to existing cluster . it will not bring down existing VM.

  • Sever2012 R2 VHD running in Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V -

I wanted to add "nightmare", after the end of the title, but I am holding that this is only a dream.
So I have an 8GB Dual Core 2008 R2 server, set up Hyper-V, and even got the Evaluation Server2012 R2 VHD running. But I can hardly do anything with it.
I have been trying to test a web site migration. The Server2012 R2 install allowed me to get IIS set up and host the default site. I also installed SQL 2008 R2 Express on the VHD, got it working, but I can not figure out how to get SQL Server Management
    Studio running.
Seem I need to have .Net 3.5 installed and this is where it gets hairy. MSDN/TechNet  says to use the Add Roles and Features option in Server Manager, so I did but it will not install. Returns this Error: 0x80091007. Bing and Google searches do not
have a single thread as of this posting with that error returned.
Found a few off beat errors from the same operation but they seem just to different to be of help.
If this is a VHD limitation, then I really like to know why there is also a 180 day limit on it if its not going to work anyway.
Has anyone seen this type of error or have a work around on installing .net 3.5 and SSMS? I have also tried to the direct download of 3.5 and it will not install. I am thinking there must be a Hotfix or something.
    Any help would be appreciated.

The server is connected to the internet but is still failing. I have tried a number of tools to remove MS reported security updates that are causing the issue as reported in this KB....
    http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/3005628
And installed the necessary update. Then tried to use the Add Roles and install .net 3.5 and received an Error: 0x80091007
DISM failed. No operation was performed. For more information, review the log file.....

  • Server 2008 SP2 will not install Windows Updates

    I receive this error:
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8000ffff: Security Update for Windows Server 2008 (KB2653956).
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8000ffff: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows Server 2008 (KB2675157).
These are two separate attempts to install the two updates listed.  The first time it failed on the IE9 update so I unselected it and tried the other with the error above.  This has been going on for quite some time.  At first it would install
some updates and not others and now it won't install anything.
I have Symantec Endpoint Protection installed, version 11, and the definition files are up to date.  I ran Malwarebytes and it found nothing.
I read a post about a hotfix called System Updates Readiness Tool but my error (0x8000ffff) was not listed as one of the errors and I hesitate to install it.
I am way behind on updates and really need to get this fixed, obviously.  If anyone has ideas, I would like to hear them.  I have not found anything online that is specific to my situation.
    thanks

KB2675157 (MS12-023) is a superseded and EXPIRED update and isn't going to install anywhere at anytime. It's been superseded -18- times since it's original release. You should have KB2809289 (MS14-012 -- released this month) approved/installed for IE9
    on WS2008 systems.
KB2653956 (MS12-024) is from April, 2012, and should have been installed EONS ago (but it has been revised a couple of times, so make sure that you have Revision 103 approved and not an earlier revision).
If the CURRENT updates are failing, then YES, you should download and run the current version of the System Update Readiness Tool from the Microsoft Download Center and implement any remediations recommended by that tool.

  • P2V SQL Server 2008 R2 HYPER-V Clustering

    Hi all,
i have current sql server 2008 environment which have the following requirements:
    1. SERVER A with failover cluster 1 node server (physical server)
    2. 4 shared disk storage (SAN)
    3. The connectivity is HBA
i am supposed to migrate the existing into hyper-v environment which the following information detail:
    1. provision CSV in the same storage with existing 4 shared disk storage
    2. SERVER B (HYPER-V will be deployed for future sql server cluster)
the scenario is we want to migrate the server A to Server B.
Please correct my plan as the following detail:
    - We want to P2V the existing into SERVER B (Hyper-V).
    here is my questions
    1. is it possible the vhd after P2V process is attached into CSV storage ?
    2. is it possible the shared storage in the previous environment is re-mapping volume into the Hyper-V ?
sorry if my thread is disorganized, i am novice in this case. need your kind advice for the best practice solve this issue.
please tell me if there is anything less clear.
    Best Regards,
    ari

First question is why do you want to P2V?  It does not take that much effort to create a new VM and then use SQL tools to backup and restore the databases into the new environment.  Then you are using known and proven tools instead of trying to
make everything work from a P2V.
When you P2V, the process will create virtual hard drives from each physical drive.  If you want to make your SQL Server into a VM, it does not make sense to keep the storage on pass-through disks.  It is better to use VHDs for the storage of a
    VM.
Having single node clusters does not make much sense, unless the idea is to immediately add a second node when available.

  • SVCHost NetSVCS On Windows Server 2008 Standard memory leak with windows update

I have a particular situation that has surfaced lately.  I have a series of Windows Server 2008 Standard.  I have applications that use WMI to do application interfacing.  For years this has been running fine until recenly in the last month
I have seen memory being swallowed by the process SVCHost Netsvcs.  I have done significant research into this.  The problem appears almost like clock work on a daily basis.  I have traced this to windows update which seems to kick off, it is
also using WMI, it starts and seems to get lost then netsvcs starts running off until all memory is consumed and the svchost process eventually fails.  At that point I can get back into the system to view it. If I catch it in time I can simply stop windows
update but sometimes I have to take the drastic and unsafe measure to kill that particular svchost process.
There are a lot of threads regarding SVCHost and nothing comes remotely close to this issue as far as I can see.
I have allready ensured that windows update is up to date.
At present I am forced to ensure that windows update is disabled. I then have to manually shut down the other services that are using WMI to do an update.  This means down time for my applications realtime updates.

    Hi,
does this issue occur on a single server or multiple servers? And is it server 2008 or 2008 R2?  (if 2008R2 there is a
    hotfix
available which would seem a good fit for your current issue).

  • Server 2008 WSUS 3.0 not downloading updates

    Error calling [kernel32.dll]:CreateDirectory(\WAYNAS\Admin\WSUS\WsusContent\6F)
That's the error I get when looking through the SoftwareDistribution.log. Doesn't just apply to the 6F directory, but to any directory it attempts
    to create.
I've seen some solution for Server 2012 regarding it being a set as removable storage, however that fix doesn't apply to Server 2008: http://www.briantist.com/errors/server-2012-vmware-esxi-permissions-errors-removable-storage-auditing/
It seems to Sync fine, just doesn't download the update files.
The permissions for the directory on the nas drive are that NETWORK and Network Service have a full control.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated,

  • Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V guests lose NIC after recent Windows Update

    Hi Folks,
I have  a Windows 2008R2 Hyper-V server with 20 guests.  They have been using a standard network adapter for 2 years.  Last night after running this months windows updates on a number of the guest VMs, each running Windows 2008R2 some of these
adapters disappeared.  That is they are not visible in "network adapters" on the guest VM, the static IP configuration is gone and instead the VM had a dynamically assigned IP shown in IP config to a Microsoft VM bus network adapter #2.
The other machines that didn't have updates run on them and have adapters visible show a Microsoft VM bus network adapter.
I don't see anything obvious in event viewer.
I've done the basic "reinstall integration services" but it still doesn't show a configurable network adapter.
I've uninstalled the windows updates and "reinstalled integration services" no luck.
Does anyone have recommendations on next steps?
I'll update the post as I move forward.
    Thanks,
    Ivan
    Ivan

    Hi,
Could you try to show the hidden device in the device manager, you can refer the following article to show the hidden device:
How to Find a Lost, Missing, Hidden or Removed Network Card (NIC) or Other Device and Even Remove it
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/danstolts/archive/2010/09/25/how-to-find-a-lost-missing-hidden-or-removed-network-card-nic-or-other-device-and-even-remove-it.aspx#sthash.z6jSu8tZ.dpuf
If you can see the lost NIC adapter then try to remove it uninstall it then rescan the device to see if there have the virtual NIC adapter found.
    Hope this helps.

  • Unable to Install Windows Server 2012 on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Hyper-V

My attempts to install are failing with a message "Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing....Error code: 0x800705070".
I am posting this on the Wondows 2012 Server forum but I have had exactly the same problem as described below with Windows 2008 R2 SP1.
As the title says this is on a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 host with all current updates. I have downloaded the ISO file from a Technet subscription file twice, once by direct download and once by the Akamai downloader. The virtual disk is connected with
the default IDE driver. I mounted both installation images as ISOs, located on a file system on the host server.  I have tried installs by deleting the VM and recreating both the VM and a new virtual disk, re-using a previously created virtual disk, and
deleting the partitions in a previously created virtual disk, and executing the format command, and then attempting the install.
I have exactly the same problem trying to create a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 VM on the same host OS.  With those attempts, I downloaded the Technet subscription iso 4 or 5 times, and burned one to a DVD which I attached to the created VM.  Same
    error message.
The virtual machines and virtual disks I created and used were all located on an RAID5 array, on a builtin Intel RAID controller using Intel Rapid Storage Technology software version 11.2.0.1066.  The host Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 uses this file system
but the OS is installed on a dedicated drive (C).
I had previously created a guest VM with Windows Server 2008 R2 (several months worth of updates ago) without drama.
I have spent hours reading forums and blog articles on this.  A common response is to download the iso another time, and/or burn it to a DVD instead of mounting an iso image. Although I didn't do the later yet with 2012 Server, but I have done these
other steps attempting to install Windows 2008 Server SP1. The install process takes a while (not to mention doing multiple downloads). Given this seems to be a common recommended remedy, and indeed based on posts does seem to eliminate the problem is some
cases, why doesn't somebody change the Microsoft installer program so it does a thorough integrity check at the beginning of the install process?

    Jeff,
After the exercise of Windows 2012 Server successfully installing (as I described above) I also successfully installed Windows 2008 R2 on Hyper-V.  From my standpoint, I have eliminated the problem (which isn't the same as correcting the problem).
The answer to your specific question regarding Hyper-V support is that the motherboard I am using, an Asus P5Q, is not supported by Windows 2008 R2 because it doesn't use ECC memory, and the vendor doesn't say it supports Windows 2008. But I am sure you
know the motherboard vendors often don't test older motherboards with newer software versions.  It appears that in specifying ECC memory Microsoft is trying to protect users of Windows Server from hurting themselves, not saying the software won't run.
Having said that, my suspicion in the beginning was, and still is, that it was some variable(s) left in an unknown state in the Hyper-V environment, which was why after trying to install Windows 2008 R2 several times I tried Windows 2012 which resulted in
the same error, and then encountered the same error trying to install Windows 7 on the same Hyper-V installation. The specific Hyper-V Windows 2008 R2 server had run without any operating problems for months before I started having trouble, and although it
had been quite a while since I had created VMs, that process used to work.  The hardware didn't change. What changed was applying updates through Microsoft Update, and a few access control rights I changed, and at least I think, I set back to their original
    value.
So in short, no, my hardware isn't supported by Windows 2008 Server.  Two, your assertion that you are running the same software configuration that I am is very unlikely to be true. There are an extremely large number of things which are different between
your test system and mine, such as which Windows 2008 components are installed, what updates were installed and in what order they were installed, and what other third party software each of us is running, and between AD, and all the features, a large number
of potential differences in ACLs, options, etc. and I don't for a minute think this particular problem was caused by the underlying hardware.
I do appreciate your taking the time to try to help me, and I hope there is one thing you and I could agree on. Microsoft could pretty easily make it much easier to isolate problems. In this day and age reporting hex error codes (as opposed to doing the
table lookup in the error handling proc), and not providing more diagnostic information seems to me to be almost quaint.  And in this case Microsoft can dismiss my problems on the grounds it was all on unsupported hardware. Unfortunately, I think they
are missing an opportunity to make their software better, because in my opinion what I encountered there are a set of conditions which will cause installations to fail that aren't going to get corrected.

  • Crystal Reports XI connection problems - after updating to SQL Server 2008

    Hello!
We have some ASP.NET 2.0 Applications that call some CR XI report files with parameters to generate PDF Files. After upgrading from SQL Server 2005 to 2008 the apps hang when trying to generate the PDFs. Some research with Fiddler showed that ever time a 401 Error is raised. Calling the reports directly from CR Designer with the same connection values and Parameter shows the appropriate data that means the log-in data iare functioning.
I already tried switching the data source driver from OLE DB to SQL Native - no effect!
Can it be that CR XI does not work with SQL Server 2008? Or is there an update for CR XI and SQL Server 2008?
Because we are in a hurry I hope somebody can solve my problem(s) ...?!
    Thanks in advance,
    Frank

    Hi Frank,
No CR XI is not supported nor is any version completely at this time. What we've found issues in so far are the Time(7) time is returned as a string value and Stored Procedure Data/time parameter SQL creation. The Time(7) field is an OLE DB driver issue with Microsoft but the Date/time SP issue is our issue and it's currently tracked and escalated. It will be fixed for CR 2008 with SP3 I believe. And I've asked that the same fix be rolled back to CR XI R2 but waiting on the reply from R&D if it can be done.
What you need to do is download the trial version of CR XI R2 ( Release 2 ) and then use your XI Keycode to install it and it will work. Then update to the latest SP 5 Service Pack. XI is past it's end of life support which means there will be no updates or bug fixes any more.
Next, MS SQL Server 2008 does not work with the MDAC version of the Native drivers, you must install the MS SQL Server Client. You'll see the driver name is "MS SQL Server Native client 10". This is the one you need to use.
Another work around is to use ODBC, it seems to resolve all issues, but the client must be installed.
    Thank you
    Don

  • Windows server 2008 R2 won't update

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 which won't install updates coming from a WSUS server.  All other servers are installing updates fine.  They fail with the code 52D.  If i look at the Application Event log i can see the install start but then
each update fails with the following events and IDs:
    Event ID: 11325
Product: Microsoft Office professional Plus 2010 -- Error 1325. 'administrator' is not a valid short file name
    Event ID 1024
Product: Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 - Update 'Update for Microsoft InfoPath 2010 (KB2817369) 32-Bit Edition' could not be installed. Error code 1603. Windows Installer can create logs to help troubleshoot issues with installing software
packages. Use the following link for instructions on turning on logging support: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=23127
Both events have the source as MsiInstaller
Also i have an update for Adobe Reader which is an .msp file which also won't install and gives the error message:
Error 1325.administrator is not a valid short name file.
I have a feeling this has something to do with Windows Installer but i'm unsure how to fix it.
    Please help

  • Problems LMS-4.2 Installation on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1

    Hi all,
During the installation of the LMS-4.2,
It passed the "Initializing" and "Copying" stages,
but, in the "Configuring", it never finishes,
Anyone had have a similar problem?
the installer is for - LMS-4.2 and the OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1

Thanks for the update. Glad to know it has installed now.
There can be some port clashes and resource scarcity when other applications may be using it. Hence we recommend to have majorly LMS as the primary software on the server's.
Also, LMS is not supported in other languages installers or setups except English and Japanese.
There are a couple more things you can do/check prior to running the installation.
LMS generally need Naming convention to handle long names/path etc. By default C: has 8.3 Naming convention enabled. However if you installed on different drive (for eg E:), for which this may be disabled.
To check naming convention you can run the following command from Windows Command prompt:
                                       cmd>fsutil.exe 8dot3name query <Drive>
    Example:
    C:\Users\winlau>fsutil 8dot3name query C:
The volume state for Disable8dot3 is 0 (8dot3 name creation is enabled).
The registry state of NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation is 2, the default (Volume level setting).
Based on the above two settings, 8dot3 name creation is enabled on C:.
8dot3 needs to be enabled for all drives LMS will potentially use, including:
    Drive where TEMP/TMP is located
The drive LMS is installed to
The drive LMS backs up to
Drive used for a relocated RME Shadow directory or other nonstandard paths written to.
In some cases, altering the TEMP and TMP variables to be a short path (eg C:/temp or C:/tmp) may avoid the issue, but not always.
Hence, to be safe, it is best to enable 8dot3name creation globally, either via the registry or Windows CLI
    Sample command to enable globally:
      "fsutil 8dot3name set 0"
Sample command to enable on one volume:
      "fsutil 8dot3name set X: 0"
Note that this needs a reboot to take effect.  You should not disable 8dot3name creation which already has it enabled, especially the system volume (usually C:).

  • Installed hotfix for error 3241 when you run RESTORE FILELISTONLY statement in SQL Server 2008 R2. But still get same errormessage.

I ran into erro 3241 when you run RESTORE FILELISTONLY statement in SQL Server 2008 R2.
    Found the hotfix
    Cumulative Update 13 for SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1.
I have installed this hotfix, now running 10.50.2876.0
But I still get the same error when trying to restore a backup.
What else do I need to do?

second to what bodo said Instead of installing SQL server 2012 SP1 CU13 it would be better to install
SQL Server 2008 r2 Sp2 SP's are more throughly tested and would include all fixes for CU and Sp1
