Server 2008 R2 standard guest license with Server 2008 R2 datacenter Host

Hello Experts,
I have Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter edition based server. Now I want to know that do I have to buy license to activate the guest OS in the VMs like for Server 2008 R2 standard edition, or I can use it for free like in the case of AVMA in server 2012 R2 as it has keys for essentials standard and datacenter edition of server 2012 that can be used with AVMA in order to activate the guest OS license for Free..
Thanks

What will I do with the SQL Server (2012/2014) (Standard/Enterprise) Licenses?
Are these the same as software product keys, or just some pieces of paper the company needs to have on hand?
In which case, when we install SQL Server 2014, (and when looked for videos) - there is only 1 product key value to be put in, is there some other screen in the setup to input the License bought ( in our case will be Core licenses).
So in addition to the Core Licenses do will a Product key be needed? Would product key from an msdn work, as it is the licenses that we will buy to indicate that we bought to run the software on server X?
    Thanks for any indications.

I will answer your question point wise
    1. Keeping license key is good idea it helps you during audit and you have proof that you are using a valid Microsoft License. Plus in scenario of disaster where whole box gets damanged you might need to install SQL Server again in that case during
reinstallation on setup page where you need to enter key you might need need it. If you are missing your paper then you are in trouble.
    2. Only on product key page license key is required and it is not required anywhere else during installation. Unless you enter valid product key installation will not proceed further.
3 License makes you a valid owner of Microsoft product with restrictions on how much hardware resource you can use how much max connections you can make etc. Key lets you install it on Windows machine making sure that you are using valid Microsoft product.
This was just a general idea please speak to your licensing specialist for more details. This is technical forum and we generally ask user to speak to licensing expert for such queries.

Please help As i am running out of time as i have to upgrade TFS for that first step is to install SQL server.

    Hello,
The following are a few things you can try:
Copy the media to the local disk drive, unzip it (in case you are installing from an ISO file, and run SQL Server setup from there.
Try to unregister and register the Windows Installer with the following two commands:
    msiexec /unregister
    msiexec /regserver
Try to use Process Monitor to log the detailed error produced when the installation of dw20sharedamd64.msi fails. You can download Process Monitor from the following link:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645
Share with us the error captured by Process Monitor.
    Hope this helps.

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard - Compatibility issues with Windows Server 2012 R2

    Hello,
We used as a test a box on which we installed Windows Server 2012 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition. No Service pack was installed. It worked perfect.
Now we try to do it on another box and all of the sudden there is compatibility issue when we try to instal SQL Server. We can still install SQL Server by clicking "Continue without getting help".
Where can this come from? If it is hardware related what are the thing I should look at?
    Thanks all

    Hello,
Adding to Shanky suggestion, you can perform a slipstream installation of SQL Server 2008 R2 + SP3 to make SQL Server
2008 R2 compatible with the newer operating system, as explained on the following post.
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/petersad/archive/2011/07/13/how-to-slipstream-sql-server-2008-r2-and-a-sql-server-2008-r2-service-pack-1-sp1.aspx

  • SQL 2008 R2 standard reports - question about server dashboard and what it refers to as "adhoc" queries

So I have started looking at some of the standard reports available with SSMS and in particular, the "server dashboard".   One thing that caught my attention were the charts that referred to "adhoc" queries.  I wondered how
those were being defined, and as I expected, they are most likely those statements not in a stored procedure.  This was answered in
    this thread.
On a particular server Im interested in, this % value is well over 50% and the primary applications that interact with the databases on this system are Microsoft based products such as Dynamics and another commercial application which I know uses hundreds
of stored procedures.  Now, Im sure there are some sql statements being used, possibly "dynamic" type sql, by these applications, but would the metrics really be skewed this far?
What these charts tell me, with the "adhoc" statement types pushing CPU and Disk I/O %  this far, is that there is a BUNCH of these statements being run against the various databases.  The disk I/O might be a bit off since I only recently
added dozens of missing indexes, but my question is this:
With the "adhoc" type statements taking up this much of the CPU and Disk resources, can we say that there are likely a lot of these going on ?  I suppose one way to find out is to launch profiler and listen in while there is moderate
    to heavy user activity.
    Thoughts?

    Hello,
Adhoc queries are DML statements with not parameterization. Sometimes users use this statements, and sometimes these statements come from applications.
Use Query #2 on the following link to identify those adhoc queries:
    http://mssqlfun.com/2013/04/08/dmv-5-queries-runing-are-adhoc-or-proc-single-or-multi-use-sys-dm_exec_cached_plans/
Identify if those adhoc queries belong to specific users or applications.
One of the options you have to deal with is is the following configuration option:
    sp_CONFIGURE 'show advanced options',1
    RECONFIGURE
    GO
sp_CONFIGURE ‘optimize for ad hoc workloads’,1
    RECONFIGURE
    GO
    Hope this helps.

    Hi,
Were there other error codes logged in Event Viewer?
Regarding Event ID 1055, the following article can be referred to for troubleshooting.

Based on the report you posted, this issue may be related to FRS replication service. As a result, we can use ntfrsutl tool to check whether the replication service is healthy.
Regarding this point, the following articles can be referred to for more information.

In addition, we can also try doing a non-authoritative Sysvol restore on Windows Server 2008 DC to see whether the issue persists.

  • Acrobat Standard XI Licensing with XenApp/XenDesktop

We are in the process of converting our network to a full XenDesktop/XenApp deployment and are looking to upgrade our existing Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard with Acrobat XI Standard. Our largest concern is that our XenDesktops are configured as a pooled environment, meaning the machines themselves are stateless - they revert to a pre-configured state once a user logs off. Also only a handful (12ish) of our office staff use Acrobat so our licensing requirement is quite low. Does Acrobat XI support running as a streaming XenApp to a pooled desktop environment where we can manage the access per-user to maintain license compliance? Especially when we are talking so few licenses.

  • Calendar Server crashes in Yosemite 10.10 with Server App 4.0

I am running an OS X Server (4.0) in Yosemite 10.10 locally on my iMac to provide calendars in our house. Since the combined update of OS and the "Server App" the calendar server crashes frequently. It restarts when I run the server app but crashes again a couple of minutes later.

Looks like a corrupt database. I suggest you export all calendars on the clients, then delete /Library/Server/Wiki/Data and reinitialize the server.
    Back up all data.
Quit the Server application and drag it to the Trash, but don't empty. You'll be prompted to confirm that you want to stop all services. You won't lose any data.
If you're using the server for DNS, temporarily change the primary DNS setting in the Network preference pane to your ISP's DNS.
Put the app back where it was and launch it. Test.
Revert the DNS setting, if applicable.

  • CAL Licensing For 2008 R2 Standard Server

    Hi All
I am upgrading a 2003 Domain Controller with 20 CALs to a 2008 Server R2 Domain Controller that comes with 5 CALs.
Firstly, can I use the existing 20 CALs with the new 2008 R2 server?
Secondly, for the life of me I cannot find anywhere that sells Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard CAL licenses. Which I would require 15 of to match my original 20.
Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks!
    Ashley Colton

    Hi Ashley,
For Server 2008 R2 you need 2008 or later version of CALs.  You cannot use your 2003 licenses.  Typically what you would do is purchase the latest license version (2012) and they will cover the previous version.  Below is sample pricing
for 2012 CALs only (no Software Assurance) for Open Business licensing program:
Windows Server 2012 User CAL Open Business  Part# R18-04281 $29.47
    http://www.provantage.com/microsoft-r1804281~1350612209.htm
Windows Server 2012 Device CAL Open Business Part# R18-04277  $25.63
    http://www.provantage.com/microsoft-r1804277~1350612599.htm
I recommend you contact a major Microsoft reseller and ask to speak to a Microsoft Volume Licensing specialist.  They can help you determine the correct licensing program for you, give you correct part#s, etc.

  • NVGRE with Server 2008 R2 guest VM - NetVirtualizationLookupRecord not created

First question -- is using a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 VM guest supported with Windows 2012 R2 hosts using HV-NVGRE and HV-NVGRE Gateways?
I did some testing and at first I couldn't get connectivity with the 2008 R2 guest. I later found that SCVMM 2012 R2 didn't create the NetVirtualizationLookupRecord for the 2008 R2 guest. After I manually created one (matching the VM's mac address,
CA, CustomerID, and PA) I was able to get the guest to communicate with other VM's on the same NVGRE subnet. However, I can't get the 2008 R2 guest to connect to my NVGRE gateway (which works fine with 2012 R2 VM guests).
Is this a known issue and/or are there other manual steps required to make a 2008 R2 VM guest work with NVGRE networks and gateways?
    Thanks
    Mark

    Hi Ralph,
First, I can't answer your question about the supportability of WNLB within an NVGRE network. Microsoft Support would have to answer that. That said, I haven't tested WNLB within NVGRE mainly because I personally don't recommend using it EVER. There are so
many known issues/limitations with WNLB that I just tell folks to not even consider it. If you want to read about them, I blogged a few years ago about this (along with another solution) -- it's dated but you can read here:
    http://marksmith.netrends.com/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=111
That said, NVGRE does have some limitations when it comes to what I would call "non-typical" IP protocols (generally anything other than TCP, ICMP, and UDP). For example, I've seen VRRP and CARP not work in a NVGRE network when playing
with some clustered load balancers. I suspect that the issue with WNLB is with its use of mac addresses, under its various network configs (multicast, unicast, etc.)
Due to all of the issues around WNLB, if it were me, I wouldn't even spend the time on it. Look at some of the VM Network load balancers or even try to make the Centos LB work.
    Hope that helps.

  • Migrate Windows Server 2008 RD TS/RDS Per Device CALs from a 2008 r2 RD License server to a 2012 RD License server

I would like to migrate my 2008 r2 CALs from current Server 2008 r2 to a Server 2012 RD License server.  Will the Migrate licenses Wizard in 2008 r2 Licensing server work for this or is there another process that I will have to use?

I have a 2008 license server with 2008 licenses that I need to migrate to 2012 servers and also provide some kind of fault tolerance in case one license server goes down.  I want to split the licenses since we can't have the same number of licenses
on both servers.  Do you know if the existing licenses can be split during the migration and be placed on two different windows 2012 license server as per Microsoft best practice?

  • Could I upgrade my 2008 r2 Standard license to Enterprise ?

Could I upgrade my 2008 r2 Standard license to Enterprise ?
is there anything related to 2012 licenses ??

    Hi,
There are no possibility to upgrade your 2008 R2 Standard Edition to Enterprise Edition. It was possible only before the availability of the 2012 Version for customers with active Software assurance for Standard Edition in open value with the step UP license
    from Standard to Enterprise.
Actually, the only way to have the 2008 R2 enterprise Edition is to purchase the Standard Edition of Windows Server 2012 R2 Version than you may downgrade to the Enterprise Edition 2008 R2.
Note: for Enterprise Edition 2008 R2 you have one physical + 4 VMs. if you downgrade your Standard Edition 2012 R2 to Enterprise 2008 R2, you receive only 2 VMs for your Enterprise Edition. If you wants to have 4 VMs, than you need two Windows Server 2012
    R2 Standard Edition licenses.
    I hope is helpful
    thanks

  • Server 2012 RS Standard Planning

It's been a while since I've planned a new server strategy.  There are so many options and looking for some guidance on best practices.  (no Laughing please) Currently we have 1win2000 Global catalog, active directory server, 1 Server 2003
file/ accounting host server and 1 server 2008 r2 hyper-v enabled running 2 vms for remote offsite users.  We have about 34 users over 30 client desktops (win7-win8)  All server systems are running solid, but would like to
    start consolidating.
Moving forward, I'm not interested in trying to figure out how to get active directory from my win200 server, over to a new server 2012.  I'm ok with starting from scratch.
    Required Roles:
    File server
SQL Server for SAGE Accpac database (about 20gb accounting databse)
3-6 Remote offsite users (RDS? or Hyper-v?)
What I'd like to buy is 1 physical Lenovo server with 2 Xeon 6core CPU's, 24gb ram, 2tb storage.
Is it wrong for me to want the above mentioned roles to run on 1 server?
Should I do it on 1 server with server vms in hyper v?
If I could, I'd install server 2012R2 Standard as a New Domain global cat/active directory server.
I'd then install file server role and SQL server for the accounting DBs.  My thoughts for the 3-6  offsite remote users would be to run virtualized win7 machines.  Does this setup sound feasible in the way I've outlined it?  I usually
read people objecting to having all these roles on 1 server instance, but we are pretty small (less than 40 users) and feel 1 server could easily handle this load.

    Hi
     Further clarify:-)
    If you plan to buy 1 physcial server you can create this topology;
    - Install Server 2012 r2 Standard on your physcial envorenment
    - Also install hyper-v role (Windows Server 2012 r2 standard Support vm with licenced)
    - Install first vm and configure as an DC.
    - Install second Vm and install SQL server on this.
As you say you have 3 Physcial server thats great...
    - Install Windows Server 2012 r2 on each 3 physcial server
    - Also install Hyper-v role on this 3 server 2012 r2 standard (also you can create totally 6 Vm wth licence on server 2012 standard with hyper-v)
    - Install PDC on a vm,then install another vm and add as an Additional DOmain Controller (for Redundacy AD DS,DNS)
    - Install 2 vm server and configure a SQL cluster
    - install file server another vm
    - install RDS server on another vm
    Is this appropriate?
