Server 2008 R2 Standard - Netlogon Service fails to start with error code 31 a device attached to the system is not functioning

Device manager does not show any signs of failed hardware
Server used to be the only domain controller in the network
We had a power failure that resulted in the machine powering off incorrectly (3 months ago or so)
Windows would not start for a missing file
Followed a guide to resolve and we were able to get into windows
Since then the OS has not seemed to work correctly
Server was demoted and AD moved to another server
I am now not able to assign permissions to folders to domain users because this machine does not see the domain
We still use this server as a file server

I believe that your system is facing some corruptions.
The easiest way to proceed would be to migrate the server content to another location, re-install it and migrate them back.
Otherwise, you can try running chkdsk /r /f and sfc /scannow
and see if this helps.

  • Server Manager fails to load with the error "A device attached to the system is not functioning"

I'm at a dead end on this.  I can't find anything online that involves this error and the Server Manager and I cannot find anything in the event viewer being generated from this error.

I am constantly seeing this error at multiple sites on Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 Standard and DataCenter.
I have counted over 50 different server I manage with services such as   domain controller, hyper-v, file servers, exchange 2013, SQL 2008/2012, and print servers.
I have seen it happen on machine that have been in production for over 2 years and to machines that were just created last week.
It is happening on metal, hyper-v and esx vmware servers.
It is happening when the machine have updates waiting or no updates, or after updates have been applied and awaiting a restart.
It is happening on Dell PowerEdge server, HP Proliant servers and IBM servers.
It is happening on servers with Intel and AMD chip-sets.
It is happening on machines that are a part of a domain or in a workgroup.
It is happening on machines with AV of Bitdefendor, Trend Micro, Vipre, Microsoft Endpoint, and Symantec Endpoint.
Only a restart will fix it.
I have ran process monitor on several of the problem machines and I cannot find anything.
Since I have only started seeing this about 6 month ago it must be a Windows update causing it.

  • Global query block is causing a DNS server to fail a query with error code Name Error exists in the DNS database for WPAD

Global query block is causing a DNS server to fail a query with error code Name Error exists in the DNS database for WPAD on a Windows 2008 server.

The global query block list is a feature that prevents attacks on your network by blocking DNS queries for specific host names.  This feature has caused the DNS server to fail a query with error code NAME ERROR for wpad.contoso.com. even though data
for this DNS name exisits in the DNS database.  Other queries in all locally authoritative zones for other names that begin with labels in the block list will also fail, but no event will be logged when further queries are blocked until the DNS server
service on this computer is restarted.

  • Help!!! iTunes install error "Apple Mobile Device Service Failed To Start". Error 7 (Windows Error 193)

Help! Following a standard upgrade I got the error message "iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows Error 193).
I am running Windows 7 and installing again brings the message "Apple Mobile Device Service failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services"
I have uninstalled everything Apple, deleted all related folders and run as administrator numerous times with no luck.
I had hoped that iTunes 12.1.2 would resolve the issue, unfortunately it failed to do so leaving me iTunes free which is driving me mad!
Can anyone advise what else I can do to resolve the error and bring back iTunes?
    Thanks

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version, or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

  • Service 'iPod Service' failed to start and Error 1503

Thanks to all the people who have provided answers posts... they have helped me get to this point!...
I have a slight variation on this issue - an Error 1503...
My original symptom was that I couldn't get iTunes to recognise my iPod so I tried to install 7.2.0.35... and right at the end I got the message about "iPod service failed to start check your permissions"...
I use AVG Free 7.5.472, Sygate Personal Firewall 5.6 and Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4, but for the install I have used msconfig to shut down everything other than iTunes and QuickTime...
When I run services.msc I get 2 versions of iPod Service listed - one as "iPod Service" and the other as"iPodService" (i.e. no space between iPod and Service)... the "iPodService" is started but the "iPod Service" is not and when I try to start it I get a message "Could not start the iPod Service service on Local Computer. Error 1503: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"
    Would appreciate any assistance!...
    Many thanks in advance...

I had been experiencing this error for a long time since iTunes 7 released. I tried different ways to resolve it. Untill today, I found a possible resolution and sucsessfully install iTunes 7.3.1.3. I think that might be helpful.
First, remove all previrous itunes and install the lates t release. You will stuck when trying to start iPod service. Open c:\program files\iPod\bin. You will see iPodService. Double click it. If you got an error about a .dll file (mine is setupapi.dll), remember it and you can continue....
2nd, put xp disk in dvd/cd-rom. Open C:\WINDOWS\system32 and locate the .dll file and rename it. This moment, your cd is running trying to rebuild the dll file just renamed.
3rd, when cd-rom stop running. Retry to start service again. Good luck, I hope you can resolve it.
I checked some microsoft KB for this error. This might happen when xp system been customized or dll file corrupted.

    Hi Mikhail,
first of all, if your an official SAP customer, then please open OSS/CSS messages for such cases.
However, if you've got a Preview installation or similar, then we could proceed as is.
To solve your issue, we'd recommend a <b>recovery using the latest data backup available</b>.
To find out the cause of the problem (i.e. to find out what causes the problem with the blob/long), we'd need either:
    1. system access* (pcAnywhere/WTS),
    or even better:
    2. your latest data backup AND we'd need you to put the DB instance into ADMIN mode and make a LOG backup. We'd need that Log backup then too.
This might get time consuming, so if you prefer a 'quick' around the problem, we suggest to perform the mentioned recovery.
    Kind regards,
    Roland
*: concerning system access: we can only access official SAP customer systems going over saprouters.

    Dear All,
Kindly help me for the above.
I have tried out the following:
time sync with DC - checked
Re-install the feature and restart the servers
check registry key value winreg - local service account read only and added domain admin account
    2 days googling, no luck
Generate cluster report and error error_mod_not_found (126) reported.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Now that you have a cluster in place and you installed a VM on this but is the VM HA enabled ?
even on a cluster your VM can still be single server. For creating a HA VM you need shared storage or shared VHDX.  and you will need the broker services with out this there is no-way the VM will failover.
Check on teched on how to do this or my blog:

  • Solaris 10: BIND 9 Chroot Service fails to start with SVCADM but works when

I recently upgraded with Solaris patches and after the reboot my Bind Named services (DNS) go into maintenance mode.
    bash-3.2# svcs -xv
    svc:/network/dns/server:chroot (?)
State: maintenance since Thu Nov 01 00:22:19 2012
Reason: Start method failed repeatedly, last exited with status 1.
    See: http://sun.com/msg/SMF-8000-KS
    See: man -M /usr/man -s 1M named
    See: /var/svc/log/network-dns-server:chroot.log
Impact: This service is not running.
    Output from var/svc/log/network-dns-server:chroot.log below
    [ Nov 1 00:22:19 Executing start method ("/lib/svc/method/dns-server start chroot") ] dns-server: Executing: named -t /var/named/chroot/named -c /etc/named.conf /lib/svc/method/dns-server: named: cannot execute dns-server : start failed! Check syslog for further information. [ Nov 1 00:22:19 Method "start" exited with status 1 ]
I can run named -t /var/named/chroot/named -c /etc/named.conf manually from as root from the command line the named process starts and DNS works.
I thought this had something to do with permissions/file ownership or something like that. I have tried changing (chown/chgrp)the /var/named/chroot/named directory to root root and named root. I also did the same with the /var/named/chroot/named/named binary. I also tried the same types of things with the /etc/named.conf file. So far no luck.
Any suggestions on how to figure this out would be greatly appreciated.

Just read the mentioned thread because the answer is in it and duplicating that seems useless. Don't make it seem like you want the answer to be presented on a silver plate

  • Windows 10 upgrade fails with error message "we couldn't update the system reserved partition"

HP and Microsoft both indicated my notebook was ready for upgrade to Windows 10, but when I tried to do the upgrade it failed - repeatedly - with the error message from Microsoft that "we couldn't update the system reserved partition." What to do?

The system reserved partition serves a purpose.  If it is deleted, then the OS will not boot back up.  In which case you are toast.ON THIS PAGE, it tells what the partition is used for.-The Boot Manager and Boot Configuration Data : When your computer boots, the Windows Boot Manager starts up and reads the boot data from the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) Store. Your computer boots the boot loader off the System Reserved partition, and it boots Windows from your system drive. I advise that you not do what CanhThanh is instructing

  • Opmnctl fails to start with error:  "Main: Nls Initialization Failed!!"

Hi. Just thought I would add this here since someone else will probably hit this error when attempting to start opmnctl: "Main: Nls Initialization Failed!!" when using 10g App Server on Windows.
There is a known workaround, which is to avoid libociei.so, but I don't have that object on windows, so I found that I have some conflict with other installed programs on this server. I removed them from the path, even the end of the path, opened a new command window, then, opmn started with no problem.
Probably not a long term solution, but if you are working on a dev server, like I am, you probably have a bunch of stuff installed that is no longer used ;)
    Hope this helps someone,
    Robin

Actually, I would first check on metalink to see if there is anything that can help with this error message. I resolved it by cleaning up the environment, but you probably need to keep your existing environment the way it is, since you have already installed.
Sorry--I didn't read through your question very well the first time.

  • Windows 8.1 fails to boot with error code 0x5c after moving physical drives

    Hi,
i just rearranged hard drives on my desktop PC. I removed 4 RAID drives, installed a single drive and reattached all drives into different SATA connectors on the motherboard.
After this, my PC doesn't boot. IT always fails with errorcode 0x5c. My OS is on SSD drive, which was not part of the RAID drive so it should boot up just fine - except it doesn't.
I've tried safe mode, I've tried starting with driver signature enforcement disabled - but it never does boot up properly.
What else do i do apart from reinstalling the OS?

    Hi,
This error 0x5c indicates that the HAL initialization failed. A hardware abstraction layer (HAL) is an abstraction layer, implemented in software, between the physical hardware of a computer and the software that runs on that computer.
It seems that the issue can be cause by interface compatible. Please enter BIOS and change SATA to AHCI to see what’s going on.
Also, I suggest you arrange your 4 RAID drives back to original SATA connector and connect the new single drive to another to check the results.
    Hope this could be helpful.
