Server 2012 built in backup. Lost 4+ months of backups.

I have been running the built in backup software on a 2012 server. Today I noticed that I only have 3 days of backups.
The server is 2012 running Hyper-V with 6 VMs.  I had the backup software configured to backup all the VMS and a bare metal backup to an external 2 TB USB drive.  I have been looking at the event logs and search the web without much success up
to this point.
The event log does have the following information message:
Backup started a fresh backup for volume '{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}' ('Esp') : [Reason: 'Volume size changed']. This may cause loss of older backup versions when backup completes.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
From the error message, could you find any volume size is changed before the first "fresh backup"?
Sometimes we will see similar issue that previous backups are deleted when lacking of free disk space. Please check the vssadmin list shadowstorage for sure.
And please check the backup target folder to see if the previous backup copies are all overwritten by the new backup. Backups files are VHD files so try to check if previous VHD files could be found.

  • Server 2012 Built-In IPSec VPN & RAS & HyperV-Switch & Netgear Pro Safe Router, Tunnel Ok, but no Traffic

    Hello,
i try to setup a IPSEC VPN (Site-by-Site or if not possible Client-BySite) between a Netgear Pro Safe Router and Windows Server 2012.
The Problem: Tunnel is up and running, but no Ping, no traffic at all.
the Server 2012 uses HyperV and has one hardware-NIC with public ip, lets say 123.123.123.1.
if no site-by-site is possible in my situation with built-in-tools this server would be only a client-site which would "dial-up" to the netgear box.
the server has a second virtual NIC with IP 192.168.137.1. Routing and RAS is enabled, because there are two virtual other servers whichs has 192.168.137.2 and 192.168.137.3.
    The Netgear-ProSafe has public ip 122.122.122.1 and LAN-Subnet 192.168.21.0/24.
I created the Tunnel in the Advanced-Firewall-Options-Window. Both, Windows and the Router, say, the VPN-Tunnel is okay. Also, i can see ESP-Packets with wireshark.
If i ping (from router to server and other direction) i get no response. Some people said, the RAS itselfe could not accept packages, but i tried from one of the virtual clients also (192.168.137.2) and no ping there also.
i tried to add a route for subnet 192.168.21.0 with 192.168.137.1 as gateway but that didn't helped also.
now, after all this time i spend today to this problem i'm a bit confused.
as i know vpn-connections there are always virtual devices, and routes for the vpn-subnets assigned to this device.
the windows firewall does not create any device, and it does not create any route - i suppose, this is because "routing and ras or windows firewall-service" does this work "internally". is that correct? do i need any routes?
i was wondering why the ICMP packet from my ping in wireshark had the public ip as source (123.123.123.1) and not the "internal" 192.168.137.1 - and i tried to restrict the vpn-rule only for the virtual internal NIC but this isn't possible, as
it is no option inside the gui.
it would be great if somebody could explain me how config and packages SHOULD look....i've never used the built-in vpn/ipsec/ras services before, so i don't know how things has to be for a correct working environment. also, i need a solution and any help
to solve the problem would be great also!
now i try to sleep one night - maybe i get some nice idea after some hours of sleeping. good night.
Addition: After some more tests i find out that if i change the local endpoint (endpoint 1) from the virtual network (192.168.137.0/24) to the public ip of the server (123.123.123.1) inside the tunnel-rule and inside the vpn-policy of the router i can access
the netgear and other devices in the remote-network 192.168.21.0 over this ip-adresses. ping is not working, but other things seems to work fine. i want to be able to ping as well ofcourse and this wired configuration looks wrong to me...can some network-professional
    help out with an explanation?
Second Addition: I can set the Local Endpoint also to "any" and it does work - but ping still does not work :-(
Third Addition: The Ping does work if i disable the NAT-Functionality on the Physical NIC. ....mhm.....

I would definitly recommend the usage of a virtual router instead using windows onboard-firewall to make the site-to-site tunnel!
as you can see in my linked thread above (Link)
this scenario is not supported from microsoft! you will run into problems!
we do run a hyperv virtual machine and install the wonderful distribution pfsense inside this box. pfsense is a software-linux-router with ipsec-functionality, which works like a charm!
and by the way i recommend to not use the products of netgear! they are expensive, very slow and the service is not good!
we have good experience with Vigor-Routers! They are less expensive, the Service is very good, and the devices are much faster, AND! ...the vpn-connections stay stable up!
this experience was very time-intensive to make! hope this will help someone else in the future.

  • Storage Server 2012 R2 and backups

We have a network with a domain server and a few virtual servers. I was looking for a setup that would backup the servers and all of our workstations. I was looking for a backup that would make an image backup but that we would still be able to get at
the files. Will Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 work for that? If so how hard would it be to implement without disrupting the current setup? I was looking at the Thecus W4000 or the Thecus W5000 because they come with the server software in a form factor
that I think would be ideal. Also, does the Microsoft Azure backup service work as a good offsite backup in this kind of setup.

    Hi,
Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 can be used to centralize client backup. Azure Backup is a simple and reliable data protection solution that enables customers to back up their on-premises data to the cloud. We can use Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials
to make Azure Backup easy to turn on “offsite backups” to help protect against catastrophes such as a fire, water damage, or theft of the NAS.

  • Restore backups from Server 2012 Standard to 2012 Essentials or Foundations

The owner of our small office (about 25 employees) wants to have an off-site "emergency server" to be used if the primary office becomes completely unavailable due to fire or other emergency. In the past we did this with a 2003 Small Business server
in the office and a basic PC stored off site both running Veritas Backup Exec 10 and backing up files to a removable hard drive that could be restored to the spare 'server'.
Now that we are upgrading the main office server to Server 2012 Standard, the Backup Exec 10 will no longer work and I'm not interested in paying several thousand dollars for licenses for the newest version of Backup Exec for the new server and the 'spare'
    machine.
So my question is, if I use the built in backup system in the 2012 Standard server, would a spare machine running 2012 Essentials or 2012 Foundations be able to access those backups? Getting the basic OS on the spare server instead of the full 2012 Standard
would lower the cost significantly and make it easier to fit into the available budget. When used in an emergency, there would probably be at most 5 people accessing the spare server so user licenses won't be an issue, I just need to make sure the backup idea
    is feasible.

    Hi Michael,
    à
if I use the built in backup system in the 2012 Standard server, would a spare machine running 2012 Essentials or 2012 Foundations be able to access those backups?
Based on your description, I test something in my Lab environment. I create a shared folder, then backup (not Full server backup)
to the shared folder via Windows Server Backup on the Windows Server 2012 Essentials. Then logon a Windows Server 2012 Standard and access the shared folder. Then navigate to the backup file (.vhdx file), right click it and select
Mount. Please assign a drive letter to it in Disk Management. Then you will be able to see all files and folders which were backed up in this backup file (VHDX file).
In addition, when run Recovery Wizard via Windows Server Backup, you also can use an option ‘A backup stored on another location’
to select the backup file which was stored in the shared folder for the recovery.
If anything I misunderstand or any update, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,
    Justin Gu

  • How to create Auto weakly backup in Windows Server 2012

    Hello
           1. I want to set auto backup in windows server 2012 Weakly.
    2. can i Set auto backup like a normal data copy.

By configuring automatic backup, you can schedule this task according to your choice(weekly/monthly). You can use backup schedule wizard accessed from the Windows Server Backup user interface (Wbadmin.msc).
To schedule backup task by using powershell, please checkout this link :

  • Windows Server Backup scheduled task run successfully but backup do not start (not running) on Windows Server 2012

    Hi,
A backup job has been setup on Windows Server 2012 (Platform: Win32NT; ServicePack: ; Version: 6.2.9200.0; VersionString : Microsoft Windows NT 6.2.9200.0) via Windows Backup Software UI (Local Backup 1.0).
It is appearing as a scheduled task "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup" belonging to user 'nt authority\system' in task scheduler.
The problem is that the Backup job never start despite the scheduled task running and completing successfully (when run automatically or manually)!
Would you be able to explain why and assist in resolving that issue?
    Here is what we know:
When the backup is run manually via the Windows Backup Software UI, it works fine.
When the backup is run via command line (as set in schedule task) in a cmd command prompt (as local/domain 'administrator' or as 'nt authority\system' which is possible by running command prompt via 'PsExec.exe -i -s cmd'), something like "%windir%\System32\wbadmin.exe
start backup -templateId:{f11eb3aa-74e7-4ff4-a57b-d8d567ee3f77} -quiet", it works fine.
If you manually run the preset scheduled task while logged in as administrator, the task run and complete successfully but the backup job does not start.
Idem if you schedule task is run automatically at scheduled time.
The schedule task run and complete successfully but the backup job does not start.
It is confirmed by running the following in a command prompt as 'nt authority\system':
    schtasks /run /tn "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup"
SUCCESS: Attempted to run the scheduled task "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup".
Despite success result, the Backup job does not start running...
No errors or warning appears anywhere in Event Logs (Microsoft > Windows > Backup or Task Scheduler) nor in the scheduled task History tab. The schedule task complete successfully but no Backup job is run...
If scheduled task automatically set by Windows Backup software is duplicated (copied) and set manually it runs fine as 'administrator' and as 'nt authority\system' (subject that 'nt authority\system' is added to the 'Backup Operators' AD group).
Here is an export of the current pre-set schedule task, is there any settings that need to be changed to make it works?

    </Task>
Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Once again, the issue is not to run the backup manually from the command line but to have it run via the scheduled task setup by the Windows Backup software.
By default, the schedule task is to be run as NT Authority\System, and when run under this account, the backup does not start (even though account is member of Backup Operators) and job can manually be run via elevated command prompt. This is not a normal
behavior and constitute a major bug in Windows Server 2012.
From my understanding the NT Authority\System account is a built-in account from Windows that should by default be part of the Administrators group (built-in) even though it does not explicitly appears like it in AD by default.
This account shall have by default Administrators rights and Backup Operators rights (via the Administrators group) without being explicitly added to those groups (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/windows/desktop/ms684190%28v=vs.85%29.aspx). By design
it is supposed to be the most powerful account which has unrestricted access to all local system resources. If that is not the case (as it seems) then this would constitute a major bug in Windows Server 2012 edition.
As said previously and as you confirmed, currently by default NT Authority\System on Windows 2012 server cannot start backup manually via an elevated command prompt unless it is manually added to Backup Operators (or Administrators) group. But wouldn't that
constitute a bug of Windows Server 2012?
Our server has not yet been restarted since I added NT Authority\System account to the Administrators group explicitly manually so I cannot yet confirmed it would sort the issue. Indeed it is heavily in use so cannot easily be restarted. Will confirm when
    done.
We also have an additional problem where after a while of last reboot, part of the Exchange ECP can no longer be properly loaded in the web browser due to compilation error (compilation is done via NT Authority\System account which seems to no longer have
sufficient right to compile .NET code). What is strange is that it works at first and then stop working at some point... I am hopeful that adding NT Authority\System to the Administrators group would sort this issue as well but once again, that shall not be
    needed!!!
Could a Windows Server 2012 update introduced some security policy changes or else that prevent NT Authority\System to have full power?

  • Lost window, using published application on server 2012, when access it via web remote.

    Hi,
We use an edi software installed on a Server 2012.
When we use this software accessing the server by Remote Desktop, everything works normal.
When we use the same software accessing the server by web access, (...softname/RDWeb/Feed/webfeed.aspx) where was published this soft application, we lost some windows after different actions.
For example if I do a modification for a value in one specific window, after I click save, that window disappear but can appear again only if I click again anywhere on my desktop.
In other words that window lost the focus and probably is still open under another window. Clicking again anywhere, will reactivate it and that window appear again.
Can you please help me to find a solution to this problem?
    Thank You!

  • Windows Server 2012 - Backup failing with Exchange - The application will not be available for recovery from this backup. the consistency check failed

    Hi
We have a Windows 2012 server with Exchange 2013, all is working fine except now i am getting issues with the backup.
'Exchange - The application will not be available for recovery from this backup. the consistency check failed for the component Microsoft Exchange Server'
I have checked the database all is fine, i have created a new db and move all mailbox;s over and then removed the old db, i have enabled circular logging and then disabled it, it seems no matter what i do i cannot get a full backup!
i did have to restore the server once and the backups still worked for about 4 days after that and then stopped, i have also tried to remove and re add the backup role!
i am stumped, any advice would be great!

    Hi
Ok, i created a test db and tried to back it up right away, it failed, i did not add any mailbox's to it either. i got quite a few events in the windows logs, as well as the same event above i got the following:

  • [Forum FAQ] Introduce Backup in Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials

Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials provides reliable ways to perform regular backups of your server and backups of your network computers.
    1. Server Backup
    Description:
Backs up your server running Windows Server Essentials. The data is backed up to an external USB drive. You can also perform full system restore of server.
    Operations:
On Dashboard, please select DEVICES and then navigate to the server which you need to backup. Right click the server and select Set up backup. When set up complete, you will be able to
Start a backup for the server. (Figure 1)
    Figure 1
    More information:

Restore or repair your server running Windows Server Essentials

    3. Microsoft Azure Backup
    Descriptions:
Performs an online backup of files or folders on your server. When you use Azure Backup to back up server data, the information is encrypted by using your passphrase before it is uploaded to a secure datacenter on the Internet.
    Operations:
    1) Open Dashboard and follow the path: HOME-> Get Started-> ADD-INS-> Integrate with Windows Azure Backup. Then as Figure 3 shows, you need to “Click to sign up for Windows Azure Backup” and “Click to download Windows Azure
    Backup integration module”.
    Figure 3
Please note: when you click to download, you may encounter the issue as Figure 4 shows. If so, please follow the path:
    Tools-> Internet Options-> Security->
Trusted sites-> Add this website to the zone and add
    http://downlaod.microsoft.com,
https://activedirectory.windowsazure.com in Trusted sites in IE. (Please uncheck
Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone). Then please check if you can download as normal.
    Figure 4
    2) After you download the OnlineBackupAddin, please run it. Then begin to install the add-in. (if any issue occurs in your installation of add-in, please navigate to C:\PrgramData\Microsoft\Windows Server\Logs folder and check
InstallAddin log file if you can find some clues.)
    3) During your installation, KB 2873390 may be required. Please download the update package and run it. Then Windows Azure Backup Agent Upgrade Wizard appeared. Please follow it and complete as Figure 5
    and Figure 6 show.
    Figure 5
    Figure 6
    4) Then please re-open Dashboard, you will find ONLINE BACKUP option. (Figure 7) There will be three steps that you need to do: (i)
Upload a certificate. (ii) Register your server.
    (iii) Configure backup settings.
    Figure 7
(i). Upload a certificate. (In this example, we use the second option: Upload certificate to Windows Azure Backup vault)
Please logon Windows Azure, select RECOVERY SERVICES and click
NEW. Follow the path: RECOVERY SERVICES-> BACKUP VAULT->
QUICK CREATE. Please type NAME and select
REGION, then click CREATE VAULT. When create completes, please click the name of this new recovery service that you create. As Figure 8 shows. Then select Manage Certificate to add or update the certificate file (.cer) that contains
a public key for the vault. The certificate is used to register servers with the vault.
    Figure 8
    (ii). Register your server
On Dashboard, navigate to Online Backup and click Register. (Figure 9)
    Figure 9
Then it will check the certificate. And then you need to set a passphrase to secure your data. (Figure 10)
    Figure 10
When you set passphrase complete, please click Next to continue. When register successfully. You will see Figure 11.
    Figure 11
    (iii). Configure backup settings
When register completes, please click Configure Online Backup. Then you can follow the Configure Online Backup wizard to configure online backup (add folders), specify the backup schedule, specify the backup retention policy and choose bandwidth usage. The
all process will be shown in Figure 12-16.
    Figure 12
    Figure 13

    Figure 15
    Figure 16
After all configurations complete, you will be able to see that the server integrates with Windows Azure Backup. (Figure 17)
    Figure 17
On the Dashboard in server essentials, you will be able to start backup online. (Figure 18)
    Figure 18
After backup online, you will see the protected data as Figure 19 and Figure 20 show in Dashboard and Windows Azure.

  • Windows Server 2012 Windows Backup failed with following error code '0x8078006B' (Windows Backup failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes.).

The Volume Shadow Copy service initially was running under the context of System, so we thought that ‘System’ doesn’t have permissions to access network shares.
When the Volume Shadow Copy service was running under the context of System, this was the error logged:
“failed with following error code '0x8078014B' (There was a failure in creating a directory on the backup storage location.).”
Which is likely due to not having permissions to write to the network location.
This is a scheduled backup trying to write to a network location, so we changes the service to run under the context of an account that does have permissions to write to the network share.
Then the error changed to this:
“failed with following error code '0x8078006B' (Windows Backup failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes.).”

We aren’t really seeing anything that gives any hint on what the issue is.
    Any ideas?  Thanks in advance!

We are trying to back up folders/files from 2 local drives (C: & D:), both of which have only 10% space used, and 100 GB free.
We are attempting to back the files up to a Remote Shared File (and there is 100+ GB free space out there).
If we try another network location, we receive the exact same error.
This is Windows Server 2012, not running Hyper-V and is a physical server not a VM.
    Thank you for the link.

  • Is it possible to restore Windows server 2012 backup to another physical hardware or virtual machine?

    Hi
I have windows server 2012 which is my domain controller. It has 2 hyper visor virtual machine that they are 2012 too. I have an additional domain controller in another location too.
I want to know, how can I restore a bare metal or system state backup to another machine, to have a domain controller same as old one whit all the properties, rules and features.
    Thanks

    Hi Mehdi,
Yes, it is possible to restore Windows backup to a different machine with different hardware. This article, although written for Windows Server 2008 still applies in 2012:

  • Create Assembly fails in SQL Server 2012 SP1 if an assembly is built with Platform Target as AnyCPU

    Environment:
    Windows 2008 R2.
    SQL Server 2012 SP1 64 bit.
I have a .NET assembly built using .NET Framework 4.0 with Platform Target set to AnyCPU and Unsafe options. The assembly has dependency on few other assemblies and has unmanaged code also. When I run CREATE ASSEMBLY for this assembly I get the following
    error message.
    Assembly '<assembly name>' could
not be installed because existing policy would keep it
    from being used.
However if I change the compile option to x64 instead of AnyCPU, I can successfully create the assembly. So my question : Does SQL Server 2012 64 bit requires assemblies that have Unmanaged code or makes calls to native libraries need to be built using x64
bit option? AnyCPU should not be used?
    Thanks in Advance

    Hello,
The default setting of a Visual Studio project is "Any CPU".SO on a 64 bit system this means the program will automatically run as a 64 bit application and on a 32 bit system it will automatically run as a 32 bit application. But if you have a dependency
assembly which is either x86 or x64, technically your project is therefore not "Any CPU" compatible.
According to BOL: If the the assembly is 100% type safe which there is no dependencies on native code or COM objects and that there is no 'unsafe' code, it is possible to take the .NET executable
that you run on your 32-bit machine and move it to the 64-bit system and have it run successfully.
In your case, the issue may caused by the unsafe code and you should spcify the platform target to X64 to make is run on the 64 bit system.

What I have done to try to troubleshoot this issue is:
    Reinstalled DPM - No sucess
Restarted the Hyper-v Host - No sucess
I'm at the point where I am out of ideas and google hasn't given me much.

    i have the same error.
"vssadmin list writers" shows last error unknown for all writers
    disk space is sufficient
ntbackup of systemdrive and systemstate runs fine.
i installed KB940349 which fixes some vss related issues but the problem is still there.
    any ideas?
    Thanks.
When you have vssadmin reporting unknown error the only way to reset the vsswriters (as I understand it please correct me if I'm wrong :) ) is to restart the machine. The Fellenator is correct, make use that the vsswriter is working correctly since this
is the main function DPM is using when taking backup. He's also right in saying that it's outside the scope! Create a new thread on your error, then you will get much better responce!
