Server 2012 Datacenter Upgrade to Server 2012 R2 Datacenter
Good Day Everyone,
Ok so my dilemma is that I HAVE to upgrade one of our 2012 Datacenter Servers w/Hyper-V hosting to 2012 R2. The part that troubles me is that I have 3 Production VM's on this server, do I have to migrate these off the
Host Controller before I conduct the upgrade? Can I shut them down and just conduct the upgrade? What is the risk? I have backups of all the VM's, however I do not have another server currently setup to handle the Live Migration as they are full, but I could
make something work if I had to move them before the upgrade.
In terms of whether you can do an in place upgrade, yes you can. We've done it with some of our formerly 2012 datacentre servers, and upgraded them to R2 with the VMs remaining on there and it worked fine. The main issue is that while the upgrade is
taking place on the host server, the VMs will need to be shutdown (or optionally put into a saved state), so as long as you have a long enough maintenance window to allow that then you should be fine.
If the maintenance window is an issue for all or some of the VMs then you'd want to live migrate them to another server so they can continue running while the upgrade is done. Unfortunately it's been a while since we did our upgrades so I can't remember
how long the upgrade process actually took.
Fortunately 2012 VM's are completely compatible with 2012 R2 (but obviously not the reverse), so after the upgrade your VMs will power up and work as before. That said, once complete you'll want to upgrade integration services on all the guests so they gain
the benefits of the R2 host.

Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Preview Activation/Upgrade
Hello,
Is there a way to activate an installation of Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Preview? I have tried DISM, and Activating with my product key through Control Panel.
When I run the Get-TargetEditions command it says I am unable to upgrade to anything. I have Datacenter license.
Currently I mounted my 2012r2dc ISO and it said it was eligible to upgrade from it, and I am currently running that...I will udpate if it works!
Thanks,
RobIf anyone is looking to upgrade their Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Preview to a production server, it's actually very simple.
1.) have a license for datacenter
2.) have the disk, or ISO
3.) run the setup from windows > install > datacenter with GUI > upgrade
about 20 minutes and 4-5 reboots later, you're up in Server 2012 R2 Datacenter. Go to CP > System and Security > System > Activate Windows
Done. Full licensed production version. -
Upgrade a Domain Controller running Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Eval
Hello,
because I couldn't wait for Server 2012 to show up on Dreamspark Premium I installed the Datacenter evaluation version after I found this blog
post telling me, I could simply enter my key when I get it to upgrade to the full version.
After entering the command I get notified that "Changing this Windows edition is not supported online for a domain controller.".
The TechNet article for upgrading evaluation versions states the following:
"If the server is a domain controller, see http://technet.microsoft.com/library/hh472160.aspx for important steps to follow before proceeding."
and taking me to an article for installing/uninstalling ADDS without further comments.
Simply typing "slui 3" and entering my key states that I have to enter an eval key.
My question is: Is there a painless way to upgrade my 2012 DC without losing my AD config?
Regards,
HansHi,
Please refer to the following Microsoft TechNet article to confirm if the steps of converting to full retail version are correct.
Evaluation Versions and Upgrade Options for Windows Server 2012
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj574204.aspx
If the warning persists, it means Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller does not support such convert. If so, please install another Windows Server 2012 full retail version or
convert to full retail version and then promote it to an additional Domain Controller for this domain. After that, transfer FSMOs to this new Domain Controller and demote the original Domain Controller.

Upgrading Server 2012 Datacenter to 2012 Datacenter R2
I couldn't get a proper answer to my question off google which is why i posted it here, hoping for others with more knowledge to give me a hand.
I currently work at a primary school and we have 2 physical servers running Windows Server 2012 Datacenter. We have 3 virtual machines on each physical server which are all 2012 Datacenter too.
What i wanted to know is, if i upgraded the physical machines to 2012 datacenter R2 will it affect the virtual machines in anyway and will i lose any data on the physical machines? The main reason for upgrading is due to the AVMA as it wont allow me to do
this on the normal 2012 Datacenter version.
Any help would be much appreciated.
HasanHi Christophe,
Thanks for replying. Only one virtual machine, our Domain controller is part of a hyper-v cluster. The other 4 are not.
I'm guessing that it would be easier, as your post states to do one server at a time while moving the virtual machines onto the second one?
Also what option out of the three should i select after i click on the move option and specify the second server?
Move the virtual machines data to a single location
Move the virtual machines data by selecting where to move the items
Move only the virtual machine.
I know this maybe a simple choice for some, but i have never done this before and i dont want to mess anything up.

Windows Media Player on Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Edition
I have a server with Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter edition installed. This server is being used as a terminal server and I needed to have Windows Media Player installed in order to use a certain feature of a program running on the terminal server. After
researching online I found that all I should need to do is install the Desktop Experience feature and Windows Media Player was included in that. After installing the Desktop Experience feature and restarting the server, I was not able to find Windows
Media Player anywhere. I tried the same process on another server running Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter with the same results.
I was curious as to if this was a Datacenter thing where it was specifically not included with Datacenter edition. I was not able to find any documentation stating that WMP was not included in Datacenter, and everything that I found stated that the feature
sets for Standard and Datacenter were the same, it was just the licensing for them was different.
Curious to see if it would get installed with Desktop Experience on Standard, I spun up a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard VM and installed Desktop Experience and sure enough WMP was installed as well. I then upgraded the Standard VM to Datacenter with a
Datacenter product key and after a restart WMP was still present.
I have also tried this exact same process with Windows Server 2012 (non R2) Datacenter edition and WMP was installed as expected, so it appears that this is only a problem with R2.
My question is, I this "works as designed" and I was just not able to find the documentation to support it or is this a bug?
Update: After doing some more playing around I noticed that if I did a clean install of Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter and then installed the Desktop Experience feature and WMP does get installed. Then I remembered that on the servers that I was trying to
install WMP on and it wasn't working were upgraded from 2012 to 2012 R2. So I created a brand new VM and installed Server 2012 Datacenter (non R2), then upgraded to Server 2012 R2 Datacenter and installed Desktop Experience and sure enough, WMP did not
install. So now I really think it is a bug and it is related to the 2012 to 2012 R2 upgrade process.Hi Caleb CSG,
Thanks for your feedback.
I'll feedback a report to Microsoft, and I also recommend you can post this bug in Microsoft connect.

Hyper-V host server upgrade from Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 to Server 2012 R2 Datacentre
We are about to upgrade our Hyper-V host servers from Server 2008R2 Enterprise SP1 to Server 2012 R2 Datacentre to take advantage of the latest Hyper-V features.
This only concerns the host servers and not the guest VMs running on the hosts (they will be upgraded next year).
This is what is running on our host servers:
Host 1
File,print & issuing CA server
Exchange 2010
SharePoint 2010
Quickbooks server
Domain controller 1
Offline CRL CA
Host 2
SQL 2008
Forefront TMG 2010
Domain Controller 2
Windows 7 client
With this is mind, I have drafted a rough action plan as follows:
Create a list of all file locations for VM memory, snapshots, virtual memory and Hyper-V config files
Document all existing system settings
Gather server information, download drivers, RAID controller and other boot drivers & firmware updates (in case the in-place upgrade fails)
Test all software media
Copy all VMs onto external data storage (NAS drive)
As part of the upgrade process we will redistribute some hard drive space i.e.
expand them to their new sizes and verify the data integrity of copied VMs by powering up each VM in a test environment
Wipe and adjust the sizes of the host partitions to accommodate the expanded VMs
Perform an in-place upgrade to Server 2012 R2 Datacenter
Check EV, services etc
Change the default locations for VM memory, snapshots, virtual memory and Hyper-V config files
Upgrade Anti-virus and other system software
Test the system
Are there any glaring omissions? Does anyone have any tips they can give me?Hi Marco,
always do a fresh Installation of your hyper-V Hosts, you could end up doing a lot of Troubleshooting with Drivers,Addons etc.. new Installation ist way faster.
Depending if you have a Cluster or Standalone Servers there are different ways to do it.
When you have installed your 2012 R2 Hyper-V Server you just can Import the VMs from the new Location.
As far as i know VMs with snapshots are not supported, so you have to remove them before doing that move and commit the changes to the vhd files, the VM need to be offline on 2008R2 to do that.
You do not Need to Export the VMs on 2008R2, just copy it, normaly you should have all Files of a VM in one Folder.
A working Backup is always your friend on such Tasks.
When the VMs are running on Hyper-V 2012R2 do not forget to Update the Integration Services.
Make Sure your Servers Hardware are still supported with 2012R2, see Server Catalog and Support Matrix of the Vendor.
And last one, where possible and supported convert the VHDs to VHDx Disks, after testing the first boot of the VM.

Upgrading Cluster To Windows Server 2012 R2
My previous thread was closed so here is a new one.
I have a 4 Hyper-V host failover cluster (R720s) running Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, which is connected to a SAN where the CSVs are stored. I have a 5th R720 server on which I have installed Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter from scratch. I have installed
the Hyper-V and Failover Cluster roles on it as well. It is can see the SAN.
Questions:
1. To setup the Hyper-V virtual switch on the 5th server, should I join it to the existing Server 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster and create the virtual switch then? Or should I create the virtual switch on the 5th server, with the same settings as the virtual
switch in the Hyper-V failover cluster, before adding it to the failover cluster?
2. Can I add the 5th server to the existing Hyper-V cluster, migrate virtual machines from Hyper-V host #1 to the 5th server, install Virtual Guest Services on the virtual machines which have been migrated to the 5th server, drain roles from Hyper-V host
#1 and perform an in-place upgrade on Hyper-V host #1, once the in-place upgrade is complete, fail the roles back to Hyper-V host #1.
Please advise.
Thanks,Just and FYI, it is now called a witness disk. Yes, it does provide a quorum function from time to time, but with the new dynamic quorum model it is not always used as a quorum.
There are multiple ways to move the VMs from 2012 to 2012 R2. Here are three. A little searching of TechNet and you will most likely find some others.
One of the new capabilities is to live migrate the VM from 2012 to 2012 R2. This involves storage migration across the network, so if you have lots of VMs and not a lot of bandwidth, this can be painful. But it is the only way to ensure no downtime
of a VM, so it could be used selectively.
If you can take some downtime on the VMs, you can use something like VeeamZip -
http://www.veeam.com/virtual-machine-backup-solution-free.html
Another method that requires some downtime is to use a step-by-step guide that Microsoft published for moving from 2008 R2 cluster to a 2012 cluster. Even though you are going 2012 to 2012 R2, it works exactly the same.

In-place upgrade from Server 2012 to 2012R2 "just quits"
I have a TechNet subscription and am supposed to get "priority support" but I mistakenly asked my question in one of the forums that is not in the "priority support monitored" list. Included here by reference:

Would appreciate any suggestions that don't involve doing a detailed documentation capture of how the server is configured followed by a clean install, that is what I'm trying to avoid if possible.
I am not trying to do anything special or scripted, just a standard OS upgrade.Hi Pepper, Malort, Robert and Brandon,
I am experiencing the same issue using either new release (april 2014) or the gold release 2012 R2 DVD from Volume license (SA) download. Both confirmed working on other installations. Setup just suddenly quits with the same non existent logs
files in $windows.~bt and c:\windows\setupact.log has a warning statement "Failed to change the UI language to en-US"
The server is running as a vm and would otherwise appear to be running perfectly. It is a DC(GC), DHCP, DNS & CA for my site.
Going to try System Update readiness Tool KB947821-v33.
Heads up MSFP Anne, any word on the cause and/or fix?

Can't upgrade Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard
Even though the "Windows Server Installation and Upgrade" TechNet article (DN627667) claims that I can upgrade Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, it seems I can't. I get an error message saying "Windows 2008
R2 Enterprise cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (Server Core Installation). You can choose to install a new copy of Windows..." What might be causing this issue? Thanks for any input! :)Hi,
Firstly, for retail versions, Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with SP1 can be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard/Datacenter.
I assume you are running Windows Server 2008 R2 retail version, right?
In addition, it seems that in earlier version than Windows Server 2012,
once you install the server in Core or with GUI mode, you could not switch to the other. The only option was to rebuild the server from scratch.
Did you install Windows Server 2008 R2 in GUI? If yes, I recommend you to upgrade it to Windows Server 2012 R2 in GUI
mode to see if the issue persists. If it succeed and you want to run in server core, you can just remove the graphical shell and convert your Windows Server 2012 R2 to Server Core.
Best regards,
Susie
Thanks for replying Susie. The 2008 R2 software is the one provided by Microsoft for Action Pack subscribers, so I'm assuming it's not retail. That's another thing, I think I should be installing the GUI as my 2008 has a GUI, not just the server core. For some
reason I missed that and clicked on the server core only install! -
Up gradation from server 2012 r2 foundation to server 2012 datacenter
I am trying to upgrade Windows 2012 Foundation to Windows Server 2012 Datacenter. As foundation allows only 15 user and i want unlimited users. I have not been able to find any instructions for accomplishing this. Any pointers to this
info will be helpful.
Thanks,
ZeeshanHi Zeeshan,
As I know, upgrade of Windows Server 2012 Foundation is not supported. For more detials, please refer to the following article.
Introduction to Windows Server 2012 Foundation
If didn't want to be limited to a total of 15 users in Active Directory, you should consider other Windows Server edition (not Windows Server 2012 Foundation).
Hope this helps.

I'm encountering error after error, after successfully installing the upgrade advisor (which took some doing) and running it with essentially no warnings/errors (the one warning was on the connection strings, as I recall -- and all of the warnings had a
"fix after" status.
First failure involved SSRS and the inability to create the "managed account". Backed out the upgrade using http://sqldbanotes.blogspot.com/2013/10/how-to-fix-failed-in-place.html
Now the failure involves SSAS and unable to connect to analysis services with name MSSQLServerOLAPService. That is the logical name for the service, although it shows up as just MSSQLServer when looking at it in the services list. I tried
setting the service account to a local account as well as to Local System -- did not make a difference, the upgrade couldn't apparently find it regardless.
Has anybody successfully done an in place upgrade from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012?Hi Bob,
Thanks for your post and I am glad to hear that the issue is resolved. Thanks for you posting a reply to share your solution and I had marked it as answer. That way, other community members could benefit from your sharing.

Rule "SQL Server 2012 feature Upgrade" Failed
I am doing an in-place upgrade of SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 > SQL Server 2012 SP1, both 64-bit, installed on Windows Server 2008 R2.
I ran the SQL Server Upgrade Advisor tool prior to upgrade which reported no issues.

regards Sundaresan.CJeremiah,
We ran into this as well. One of two options:
1.) Just run a repair on the SQL Server installation
2.) Repair the WMI settings on the SQL Server as descibed here:
