Server 2012 fresh install - Running at a crawl. Possible hardware issue?

Hello All,
I have recently purchased a used server and just fresh installed Server 2012 to evaluate it, and I am experiencing a issue with it running very slow.   So far nothing has been setup or installed besides the OS, hard drives, and a external usb drive,
so it is pushing me to believe my issue is hardware related.
First let me describe the issue more.   Basically everything is slow to load.  Control panel takes 20 seconds...  trying to load disk management and other snap in from administrative tools all take 15-20secs+ and first come up in
a greyed out window or the administrative tools window goes to "Not Responding" for a few seconds then loads it.
I do not think it is due to the fact the server is used with slightly dated hardware as it has Dual Quad-Core 2.66 Xeons & 16gb ECC Ram, so I was thinking their must be a bad piece of hardware in there?  Maybe bad ram?
Anyway I plan to start hardware diagnostics, but I just wanted to see if anyone had any insight or suggestions for me.  And to verify if this sounds like a hardware issue to you as well.
Thanks!

Windows 2008 R2 that is on top of the list of supported operating systems. It is a good choice for some testing with M350 G5. Then you can test the in-place upgrade and application compatibility test will tell you, which component makes the problem.
If for example onboard NIC is not compatible, then you can use another NIC card that is compatible. When it is RAID controller (very often), then either use another RAID or single HDD (it is test only, not for production environment).
You can explore the virtualization path. Get know if appropriate hypervisor from VMvare is compatible with this hardware is also compatible with Windows Server 2012 R2. VMware forum may answer your question on virtualization. Working in virtual environment
will provide some experience too.
Majority of current desktop equipment allows you for testing Windows Server 2012 R2. There are some exceptions, namely "high end game machines" that make you to find remedy for drivers (example
MAXIMUS IV GENE-Z - here is a need to adapt inf file for NIC, because of there is low end NIC on motherboard.)
For low performance issues use native tools like Performace Monitor and diagnostics - Event logs and Device Manager. For detailed analysis consider Sysinternals tools.

  • TS 140 Windows Server 2012 R2 install failure error 0x80070570

Recently bought 2 TS140 70A4001PUX servers with Xeon E3 1245 v3 attempting to install eval version of server 2012 R2 (latest on site April refresh) and keep getting the following error at around 62% in the getting files ready for installation:
Windows can not install required files.  The file may be corrupt or missing.  Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation.  Error code: 0x80070570
I have seen web search results for various MS OSes that indicate this is due to bad memory, corrupt installation media or download, Nic cards, BIOS settings etc.
To rule out memory ran memtest for hours with no errors against the crucial 32GB mem 2 (CT2KIT102472BD160B) also tried installing against the 4GB mem that came with the system. I think I have done enough to rule out the memory.
Installation media, I downloaded the ISO from Microsoft's eval site three different times using Firefox, Chrome and IE burned the image to DVD 2 different times and tried numerous times using Rufus on an 8GB USB stick in different USB ports. I’ve tried installing the datacenter version with both GUI and server core options. Next thing I’m going to try is to install Server 2012 from an older ISO that I have used successfully many times in the past will update later though I would prefer to install fresh from R2.
I also have the Lenovo 1GBPS Ethernet I350-T2 Server adapter by Intel for ThinkServer. I have tried installing with it inserted and with it removed, also with nothing even disabling the on board Nic in the BIOS. Same result.
The SSD drive I have is the Samsung 850 Pro 128GB. After the failure I am able to mount this drive on another machine and see that a significant amount of files get copied to it so I ruled out the sata cable. I also tried with another no SSD WD HD with the same result.  I even break out at install run dispart and clean the partitions.
    Excerpts from setupact.log on SSD:

For BIOS settings I have reverted back to defaults tried IDE instead of AHCI and also tried CSM support enabled and disabled, NIC both enabled disabled.
Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • SQL Server 2012 Express Install on Windows 7 SP1 Embedded not using virtual account?

    Hi there,
I did a default installation of SQL Server 2012 Express on Windows 7 embedded Standard SP1.
When I look at the SQLSERVER service credential it is configured to run under "NETWORK SERVICE" instead of the virtual account "NT SERVICE\MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS".
This is different from SQL 2012 Express installation on a non-embedded Windows 7.
    Why is this difference?
Secondly, because of this, I am unable to take a backup of databases to any folder other than the default SQL folder.

    Hi Chandrasekaran,
As Local Service account, the Network Service account and high privileged Local System account could be used by many services.
It becomes harder to track which service is actually accessing resources and performing actions, because all the services are using the one Network Service account or other account.
In Windows7 and Windows Server 2008R2, it introduces a new type of account called a virtual account, which emulates creating many unique instances of the Network Service account, so each service runs with its own instance of the Network Service account.
For example, when you install SQL 2012 on Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7 and later you’ll see the services run with virtual service accounts named like:
    in the format NT SERVICE\<SERVICENAME>.
According to your description, when the SQLSERVER service was run under “NETWORK SERVICE”, you only back up database to the default SQL folder. It may be caused by the NETWORK SERVICE account has limited local privileges, just accesses network
resource with the computer credential. I recommend you change the account to Local System account, by default, which has full permissions on your computer.
For more information about SQL Server service account and virtual account, you can review the following articles.

  • SQL Server 2012 SE install time

I installed SQL 2012 SE on a couple of VM's built on HyperVservers. Both the Hypervserver hosts are different. So when the VM's inherited the properties these are the configurations:
    VM1:
    Memory: 32GB
    OS:Windows Server 2008 R2 EE SP1
    Processor: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU L7555 @1.87GHz
    VM2:
    Memory: 32GB
    OS:Windows Server 2008 R2 EE SP1
    Processor:Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5649 @2.53GHz
Both the VM's are freshly built this morning SQL Server installation took like 105 Minutes on VM1 and 45 Minutes on VM2. On Both VM's the ISO's were copied locally and installed. My question is why did the installation take so long on a L-series processors
versus E-Series. The E-series is like 4 generations behind.
Is it because of the processor speed?
Experts Need your valuable inputs. Thanks .

    Hi,
Based on your description, many factors can affect the performance when you install SQL Server 2012 on a virtual machine, including the processor speed.
    According to this article:
Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2012, it is recommended to use a CPU which processor speed is 2.0 GHz or faster when installing SQL Server 2012, as a faster CPU can  speed your operating system and optimize the installation
    performance of SQL Server.

  • Shifting data from Old R/3 server to Freshly installed server

    Hi All
I have freshly installed 4.6 C server on Windows 2000 and database is Oracle.
Now i want to shift the data from existing 4.6C server to this new server.
Is there any other procedure rather than backup/restore bec we are not going for the tape backup .
I am copying the datafiles manually.
Is there any other procedure for that.
    Thanks

  • Cannot get SQL Server 2012 to Install

    I downloaded SQL Server 2012 SP1 64 bit version.
I opened the download using Cyberlink ISO Viewer.
When I double-click on the setup.exe file I get the usual dialog "Do you want this program to make changes to your computer?"
After I click yes, something flashes briefly and then I get a dialog box with an "X" in it.
Doesn't say why it is not installing.

    You are most welcome :-)

  • SQL server 2012 Silent Install Issue

I am trying to install SQL Server 2012 Express from command line. Here is a test example:
    setup.exe /QS /ACTION=install /INSTANCENAME="UnattendedCmd123"
              /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /FEATURES=SQLENGINE,SSMS
              /SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS="BUILTINADMINISTRATORS"
This should work but it doesn't install (no error) I checked the summary in the logs and it shows:
    User Input Settings:
      ACTION:                        RunRules
      CONFIGURATIONFILE:
      ENU:                           true

      UIMODE:                        AutoAdvance
      X86:                           false
    IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS:  false
Why is it coming through as false when I clearly have the parameter?

    Hello,
    Please change the following:
    /SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS="BUILTINADMINISTRATORS"
     By
    /SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS="BUILTIN\ADMINISTRATORS"
Please use the instance name without the double quotes.
    Hope this helps.

  • Downloaded Evaluation Version of Windows Server 2012 Standard- install is asking for product key

I downloaded the evaluation version of Windows server 2012 standard from the Microsoft TechNet site.
When I try to install server 2012 as a new virtual, I'm prompted for the product key for server 2012.
I do not have the key. How do I get the key? Or, why is this happening on a evaluation version?
Does anyone out there have the key for Windows server 2012 standard evaluation version, or know where I can get it?
    Thank you.

  • In-place Upgrade Server 2012 to R2 running DFS-N and DFS-R roles

    Hello,
I have 2 servers running DFS-R and DFS-N running Windows Server 2012. I am planning to do an in-place upgrade to 2012 R2. Is this supported?
    Rgds,

    Hi Irfan,
Yes, you can upgrade Windows Server 2012 to 2012 R2 to deploy a later version of DFSR. DFSR must be recreated for that server and perhaps for the entire Replication Group depending on the server’s place in data origination.
For more detailed information, please refer to the articles below:

i wanted to downgrade it to 10.6; many apps that i use are not working on 10.7.
so i crated a USB installation drive from the SL DVD i have, but when booting i got the kernel hang.
i tried boot from a USB dvd drive and got the same screen.
then i restarted the mac mini while holding the T to my MBP and erased the HD.
it did not help, i still get the same screen.
and not (since i erased the drive) i can't reach the "Recovery mode" anymore…
    HELP!!!!!!!

    1. That iMac will not run Snow Leopard
see > Don't install a version of Mac OS X earlier than what came with your Mac

  • Error when trying to connect to identity server from vcac 6 server during fresh install attempt

Hello.  I am trying to install vcac6 so I can try it out but I am getting the error "Command execution failed with unexpected error: java.security.cert.CertificateNotYetValidException" when I try to point the vcac appliance at the identity appliance during the sso config.  I researched around but didn't find anything.  I confirmed that all network communication is good between the two.  Dns names resolve fine.  I am using self generated certs for both.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

As poorem suggested, I would check that the time is the same on both the identity and vcac appliances.  It has been a while since I posted this question but I believe that did get me past that specfic error.  I changed the timezone on each and made sure the times were correct and the same.
