Server 2012 not auto-registering with 2003 DNS

Hope somebody can help with this, it's driving me mad.
I have about 600 VMs, all Windows Server of various versions from 2000 (I know...) to 2012. My Active Directory and DNS runs on Server 2003. Two of the six DCs (the DNS servers) are physical.
The problem I have is that a handful of 2012 VMs seem to stop registering in DNS. Most 2012 VMs are fine, and all the non-2012 VMs are fine. So based on that I think it's more to do with something being wrong with these few VMs rather than the
DNS servers. It's always the same servers that have the problem. It causes grief because once the DNS scavenge happens the servers get removed and then nobody can contact them by name.
The "quick fix" is to run ipconfig /registerdns on the problem servers, whereupon they put themselves back into DNS again but don't update the registration. So eventually they just get scavenged out again.
I'm wondering if it's something to do with how the VMs were created. Some but not all 2012 VMs were created from a VMware template and customised via vCenter. I've checked some of the servers for duplicate objectSid and objectGUID in Active Directory but
so far they're all different. There's nothing particularly obvious in the event logs on these servers, aside from saying they're failing to register IPv6 PTR records (which is correct, should probably turn IPv6 off...) but I don't think that'd cause IP4v A
record registration to fail?
Any suggestions? Thanks very much in advance.

Hello, thanks for the reply.
Yes the "Register this connection's addresses in DNS" box is indeed ticked. I tried un-ticking and re-ticking it to see if that kicked it back into life on one server but it made no difference.
Some of the servers that had the problem now seem fine, and are updating the DNS registrations daily and have been for over a month. Others seem to update for a period of time, maybe a couple of days, maybe a few weeks, and then stop. Others only update
when I do the ipconfig /registerdns.
Power Management is enabled, though these are Server operating systems, so I'd like to hope they wouldn't do anything as daft as shutting down the NIC (especially when they're trying to talk over it). However this must be a default setting as it's enabled
on all the VMs I've checked, and the vast majority are working fine. I'm going to try disabling it on one of the problem servers but I'm not terribly hopeful it'll kick it back into normal operation - unless you can point me towards a KB article or something?
I'd enabled the DNS Client Operational event log on some of the problem servers but to the untrained eye it doesn't contain anything terribly useful (I've yet to find out what the various return code and option values mean).

  • SQL Server 2012 not auto-shrinking logfile

We recently deployed SQL Server 2012 Standard on a Server 2008 R2 SP1 machine and, for the most part, everything behaves the same as SQL 2008 R2 (no surprise there). However, one issue I've been experiencing is that the transaction logs will not automatically
shrink like they do in SQL 2008 R2. The database recovery model is set to full, and we have full backups running weekly and transaction log backups running every 12 hours. The transaction log backups work fine, but the files themselves never shrink. Autoshrink
is set to true. If I manually run a shrink operation on the transaction log files, it works like a charm - it just shrank the 29GB file down to 3GB. Why does the transaction log not automatically shrink anymore?
    Microsoft SQL Server 2012 - 11.0.2100.60 (X64)
    Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (Build 7601: Service Pack 1)

    Hallo Daniel,
I understand the reason for the action of shrink now but I'm not agreeing to your arguments :)
But that is an issue what you may decide...
I meant RTO (recovery time objectives) because with your backup strategy you have to restore at least 10 log backups if the database will crash.
RPO may fail with the log backup period of 12 hrs in between, too!
(But all measures are part of a SLA we don't know - so maybe your business may tolerate such values)
e.g. Full Backup is on Sunday night 10:00 pm
The database crashes at Friday afternoon 5:00 pm
You have to restore the last full backup and 9 transaction log backups (2 each day from Mo - Thursday + 1 from Friday)
All data from 12:00 am to point of crash are lost!
If you would have a full backup and a daily diff backup you would decrease the numbers of restoring actions to 3 instead of 10
Restore of the full backup from Sunday
Restore of the diff backup from Friday
Restore of the log backup from Friday noon
Sorry for my OT because this has not really to do with your problems but I would take theses objectives into consideration.
We don't activate "auto shrink" for ANY productive database because we can not foresee what processes will run on the databases at any time - this is a decision the business has to make.

  • Windows Server 2012 Windows Backup failed with following error code '0x8078006B' (Windows Backup failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes.).

The Volume Shadow Copy service initially was running under the context of System, so we thought that ‘System’ doesn’t have permissions to access network shares.
When the Volume Shadow Copy service was running under the context of System, this was the error logged:
“failed with following error code '0x8078014B' (There was a failure in creating a directory on the backup storage location.).”
Which is likely due to not having permissions to write to the network location.
This is a scheduled backup trying to write to a network location, so we changes the service to run under the context of an account that does have permissions to write to the network share.
Then the error changed to this:
“failed with following error code '0x8078006B' (Windows Backup failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes.).”

We aren’t really seeing anything that gives any hint on what the issue is.
    Any ideas?  Thanks in advance!

We are trying to back up folders/files from 2 local drives (C: & D:), both of which have only 10% space used, and 100 GB free.
We are attempting to back the files up to a Remote Shared File (and there is 100+ GB free space out there).
If we try another network location, we receive the exact same error.
This is Windows Server 2012, not running Hyper-V and is a physical server not a VM.

  • HTTP Server is not currently supported with Solaris 10

I am having a problem to start the HTTP Server on Solaris 10 (I am installing HTTP Server as part of HTMLDB installation on Solaris 10).
I had a problem to install it at first, however I've found on 'AskTom' that unsetting ORA_NLS33 helps and it did. Now I can't start the HTTP server and I've found on metalink that 'HTTP Server is not currently supported with Solaris 10, this is targeted for Q2CY05'.
    Has this been fixed yet?

  • How to search my stolen iPhone if it was not yet registered with iCloud

How to search my stolen iPhone if it was not yet registered with iCloud

    You can't.
The only way to locate/disable/erase any lost/stolen iPhone/iPod Touch is through Find My Phone or a similar app. However, this requires that Find My Phone be setup/activated, on your phone, before it was lost/stolen. You would then login at iCloud.com & try to locate it. This requires the phone be turned on & have an Internet connection. There is no other way to locate a lost/stolen iPhone. Apple can't/won't help you, nor will your carrier. Report the loss to the Police, your carrier & Insurance company. Change all of your passwords.
If your carrier offers Blacklisting & they Blacklist the phone, it will be unusable as a phone.
If locked with a passcode, and running iOS 7.0, then phone cannot be activated or the passcode removed without knowing your Apple iD/Password. It will be nothing but a useless paperweight.
If not running iOS 7.0, the phone can be forced into recovery mode & restored.

    Hi Micha,
I checked the download link and the ISO file name. It should be OK. As Tim mentioned, would you please
let us confirm whether you had installed via this ISO file? After installation, did you find it was a Windows 8, not Windows Server 2012? Just a confirmation. Thanks for your understanding.
    In addition, if

  • Wireless keyboard does not auto setup with a mac mini

I have just bought a mac mini and am trying to set it up, the only keyboard I have is the apple wireless keyboard. I have switched the Mac on and it finds the "magictrack pad" but does not seem to find the key board. The keyboard light flashes for the the 3 minutes looking for something to pair with - I have managed to pair it with my iPad (and remove the pairing - afterwards) but it does not auto-pair with the "new" Mac. The problem is that I cannot go any further (to allow me to complete the full setup procedure) without filling in the information that is required and I cannot fill in the information required without a keyboard. I do not have a USB (or any other keyboard) so I seem to be a little stuck. - Any ideas would be gratefully received.
Is there any way of connecting a PC laptop to the Mac Mini and use the keyboard on the PC?

Not sure what your process was but try this.
Make sure the Mini is off. Hold down the button
on the keyboard to make sure it is off.   Next
start the Mini and as soon as you hear the
start up chime, press the power button on the
keyboard.  Be sure not to press any other keys.
For what ever reason, timing is critical with the
keyboard pairing at boot time.  This is only an
issue when doing things that require a keyboard
at boot.  Once paired, it connects fine when normally
    booting.

  • Upgrade to Server 2012 R2 domain controllers from 2003

I am at a loss as to what I did wrong here. Everything seems to be working fine except for one subnet (which is behind a hardware firewall).
We had two Server 2003 domain controllers and one of them was failing.  I raised the forest functional level of our old primary domain controllers to 2003.  I built the first replacement Server 2012 R2 domain controller.  Added the AD DS roles
and promoted it as a domain controller.  I let it sit for a couple days.  The FSMO roles were currently being handled by our other 2003 domain controller.  Once this had been sitting for a while (don't recall how long) I ran dcpromo on the failing
server and demoted it.  Once demoted I shut it down and pulled it out of the rack.  I then built our second 2012 R2 server and gave it the same IP as the failing one.  Installed the AD DS roles and integrated DNS as prompted by the wizard.
I then made it the operations master for Schema master, Domain naming master, PDC, RID pool manager, and Infrastructure master.  Then I ran dcpromo on the second 2003 domain controller to demote it and removed it from the network.  I then demoted
the first new controller (DC03) changed the hostname and IP to the name and IP of the second 2003 controller and promoted it again.  I'm not sure at what point things broke, but everything works from the same subnet that the domain controllers are in,
just not a second subnet that is through a hardware firewall.  I don't see anything getting blocked while watching firewall logs so I don't think the firewall is the issue.
Here is the dcdiag and ipconfig from the first controller (which has all 5 FSMO roles).

When I try to bind a machine to the domain I get an error message that says "
The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate an Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for domain "wgd.inet":
The error was: "This operation returned because the timeout period expired."
    (error code 0x000005B4 ERROR_TIMEOUT)
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.wgd.inet
The DNS servers used by this computer for name resolution are not responding. This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses:
    10.240.1.24
    10.240.1.23
Verify that this computer is connected to the network, that these are the correct DNS server IP addresses, and that at least one of the DNS servers is running.
Please let me know if I'm missing something or if there are other things I can check.
    Thanks!
I forgot to mention that after the 2003 domain controllers were out of the environment, I raised the domain and forest functional level to 2012 R2.  All clients in the environment are Windows XP Pro or above.  The XP Pro boxes will be going away as
soon as our vendor supports their software to run on Windows 7.

We now have 2 2012 R2 DCs. The 2003 DCs are gone. Metadata from the old DCs is all cleaned up. DNS seems to be working fine in 3 out of 4 subnets. The 4th is behind a hardware firewall and I can see the IP address of the machine I am trying to bind to the
domain connecting to the two new domain controllers but the client machine that is trying to bind gives an error.  An Active Directory Domain Controller for the domain wgd.inet could not be contacted.  It seems that this is just a DNS issue for one
particular subnet (10.240.2.0/24).  This subnet is setup in AD Sites and Services\Sites\Subnets\10.240.2.0/24 (Site: Default-First-Site-Name).
When trying to do anything with nslookup from the 10.240.2.0/24 subnet it times out.  The route is there and I can watch it connect through our hardware firewall over port 53.

  • Strange Active Directory issue on 2012 R2 2ND-DC with 2003 R2 PRI-DC

I ran into this issue earlier today which is something I haven't seen before.
Current setup is 1 Forest & 1 Domain with a single Domain Controller (W2003 R2) which obviously has all the FSMO roles since it's the only DC in the domain ever installed. We're ready to decommission this OLD W2003r2 server so I prepped a new machine
and installed Windows Server 2012 r2 on it, all patched up.
    Done the followings:
    1. Joined the new server to the domain (successful)
    2. promoted the new server to a domain controller (successful without any errors or warnings)
    3. Verified that the DNS records have replicated from the primary DC to the 2nd DC (successful)
    4. Verified that I was able to access the AD services on the new domain controller, users, ou's, sites etc. (successful)
    5. Verified replication of AD objects by adding users/ou's/distribution groups on Primary DC and see them replicate over and vice-versa (successful)
I waited about an hour just to make sure that everything has replicated over and was in sync and decided to shutdown the primary server (domain controller) to make sure things were functional on the new one and as soon as the old DC was shutdown I wasn't
able to open any of the AD services like AD Domain and Trusts, AD users and computers or AD Sites and Services. The window opened but my domain wasn't listed and neither of the related objects. What is the issue here? Shouldn't the secondary domain controller
be a replica of the primary where I can see all the objects and make changes which will sync back once the primary comes up again. I've worked in setups where we had two DC's in one domain and I was able to view the AD objects and services regardless if one
of the DC was not available, same thing in a setup with 3 DC's.
If someone can chime in on this it would be great, I'm not sure if I'm missing but it's weird.
    Regards

Did you apply the hotfix to the 2012R2 server:

  • SharePoint Foundation 2013 installed on Windows Server 2012 not sending out email notification

I have a server where i installed SP Foundation 2013 on top of Windows Server 2012. I have configured the SMTP as well as the outgoing SMTP in Central Administration
of SharePoint. When i create an alert on a document library, its did not sent any email notification on the changes made to the document in the document library. So, i created a workflow to send out email using SPD2013. The workflow run, but it cannot sent
out email with error saying that outgoing email is not configured correctly. I have checked with another server which i installed SP foundation 2013 on top of Windows Server 2008 R2 - its sending out email just fine using same configuration and outgoing SMTP.
I need help to resolve this issue or at least the cause of the problem.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Try below:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/13771.troubleshooting-steps-for-sharepoint-alert-email-does-not-go-out.aspx
Go to Central Admin ---->Operations----->outgoing email settings and verify that SMTP server is mentioned correctly
    2) Test the connectivity with the SMTP server.
In order to do that follow these steps:
      Open  cmd
telnet <SMTP server name> 25 ( We connect smtp server to the port 25)
you should see a response  like this 220 <servername> Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.3959 ready at date and time
Beware that different servers will come up with different settings but you will get something
If you dont get anything then there could be 2 possible reasons, either port 25 is blocked or
the smtp server is not responding.
For testing response from your server
For testing response say ehlo to it.
                            Type :
                                        ehlo <servername>
                            output:
                                        250 <servername> Hello [IP Address]
Now a test mail can be sent from that SharePoint server.
Now we need to enter the From address of the mail.
                          Type :
                           mail from: [email protected]
                           output:
                           250 2.1.0 [email protected]….Sender OK
It's time to enter the recepient email address.
Type : rcpt to: [email protected]
    output:
    250 2.1.5 [email protected]
Now we are left with the data of the email. i.e. subject and body.
    Type : data
    output:
354 Start mail input; end with <CRLF>.<CRLF>
    Type:
subject: this is a test mail
    Hi
    This is test mail body
    I am testing SMTP server.
Hit Enter, then . and then Enter.
    output:
    250 2.6.0 <<servername>C8wSA00000006@<servername>> Queued mail for delivery
    Type: quit
    output:
    221 2.0.0 <servername> Service closing transmission channe
    3)  Check alerts are enabled for your web application
verify if the windows timer service is running or not.
Run this stsadm command to check that
          Stsadm.exe -o getproperty -url http://SharePoint-web-App-URL -pn alerts-enabled
         This should return <Property Exist="Yes" Value="yes" />
If you don’t get this, Enable alerts by:
         stsadm.exe -o setproperty -pn alerts-enabled -pv "true" -url http://SharePoint-web-App-URL
If its already enabled, try turn off and turn on it back.
    4)  Check the Timer job and Properties
           Go to
MOSS 2007:  Central Administration > Operations > Timer Job Definitions (under Global Configuration)
In SharePoint 2010: Central Administration > Monitoring > Review Job Definitions
Check whether the "Immediate Alerts" job is enabled for your web application. check these properties:
                       job-immediate-alerts
                       job-daily-alerts
                       job-weekly-alerts
           stsadm.exe -o getproperty -url "http://Your-SharePoint-web-App-URL" -pn job-immediate-alerts
           The expected output is:
           <Property Exist="Yes" Value="every 5 minutes between 0 and 59"/>.
If you don’t get this, run the following command to set its value.
           stsadm.exe -o setproperty -pn job-immediate-alerts -pv “every 5 minutes between 0 and 59" -url http://Your-SharePoint-web-App-URL
    5)  Check whether the account is subscribed for alerts and it has a valid email account. This should be the first thing to check if the problem persists for some users not for      all.
    6)  Then check if at all those users have at least read permission for the list. Because the first mail should go out for every user without security validation but the next ones       won't be delivered unless the user has at least read
    permission.
    7)  If it is happening for one user, can also try to delete and re add the user in the site.
    8)  Most importantly , you should try this one.
Run this SQL query to the content db < Select * from Timerlock>
This will give you the name of the server which is locking the content database and since when.
In order to get rid of that lock
Go to that server which is locking the content db and then restart the windows timer service.
within some time it should release the lock from content db, if not then at the most stop the timer job for some time
Once the lock will be released then try to send some alerts
You will surely get the email alert.
I found this is the most probable reason for alert not working most of the time. We should start troubleshooting with above steps before coming to this step for any alert email issue but from step 1 to step 7 are best for new environments or new servers.
If the issue is like this ,alert was working before and suddenly stopped working without any environmental change then above conditions in step 1-7 should be ideally fine.
Even after this if it is not working, then you can try these few more steps too
    9)  Try re-registering the alert template:
    stsadm -o updatealerttemplates -url http://Your-SharePoint-Web-App-URL -f  "c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\XML\alerttemplates.xml" -LCID 1033
    10)  Try to clear the configuration cache
If this helped you resolve your issue, please mark it Answered

  • SQL Server 2012 Multi-Site clustering with 2 nodes for HA and DR

Usually we setup 2 Node Prod cluster for Local HA and 1 or 2 Nodes in other data centre for DR
Given that we have an option to setup multi-site / multi-subnet clustering from SQL 2008 R2/2012. I am planning to use just 2 nodes, 1 in prod data centre and 1 in DR data centre with 2 or 3 instances. This will act as both HA and DR solution.
I would like to know if this solution is good, and any disadvantages, any best practices, etc.? By implementing this I can save some cost on physical servers.
    Following will be configured:
    * Will be using different subnets, quorum on different server with "Node and File Share Majority"
    * All virtual IPs will be registered for virtual name, and Subnetdelay, Subnet threshold will be modified accordingly
    * All nodes on same domain
    * Use SAN Disk with replication to DR site

SQL 2008 R2 doesn't support multi-subnet clustering. You would still need 3rd party component like VLAN and Disk Replication. SQL 2012 is the first version to support multi-subnet clustering without using VLAN. you would still need disk replication hardware/software.
    Taken from my book
Since nodes are often located in two different data centers at geographically dispersed locations, there is no shared storage between the nodes in a multi-site cluster. Clustering across two different data centers provides a higher level of availability and
protection at the storage level as we have more than a single copy of the data.
For SAN replication technology implemented in such clusters, the main activity is to keep data replicated between the sites. Typically, if we have nodes on two different sites, we would have two different network infrastructures and the nodes would be in
different subnets. In such cases, if we are on a SQL Server version before 2012, we need to use third party VLAN (Virtual LAN) technology so that one IP address travels between two sites. This is called wide-IP. Companies hesitate with this solution because
of the need to buy a third party solution to deploy the VLAN. Using VLAN technology means the same IP address would failover to the remote site in case of a local site disaster. Network administration might consider this as an overhead to maintenance and an
extra piece of the networking component that needs to be secure.
With SQL Server 2012 we do not need to use stretch VLAN technology but SAN replication is still needed for multi-site clustering. The OS version for this can be from Windows Server 2008 R2 and above. In this deployment, we can have a SQL virtual network
name having an “OR” dependency on two different IP addresses. One address would be representing each subnet. With the “OR” dependency, if IP1 or IP2 is online we just use the network name. This is one of the Enterprise Editions only features.
Other option which you can think of, without using 3rd party solutions would be AlwaysOn Availability Group. I have written details about it in my book.

    Hi
First thing to check if windows is activated.
Secondly if the first option is valid then add the following registry keys:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Bootstrap] "BootstrapDir"="C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\"
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Bootstrap\Setup] "PatchLevel"="11.00.2100.60"
Then copy from the media / temp setup directory following files / folder into C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\SQLServer2012
