Server 2012 R2 perfmon cannot add counters

Hi,
when I try to add performance counters to the perfmon mmc, I receive an error message from de.dll: "no resources present, aborting". When I click ok, I get a "mmc has stopped working".
No difference whether I try this locally or from remote. Services are running. Tries lodctr.exe/r with no success.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Best,
Tim

Hi Tim,
When you open the Performance console have detected a problem with installed counters and have disabled the counters automatically to prevent them from slowing the system.
You could enable the disabled counters or turn off the automatic testing feature for the counter DLL or adjust the level of testing.

  • Server 2012 Local Shares - Cannot access using \\IP but works via \\localhost

I've been stuck on this problem for the last couple of days and I can't find a solution on the internet that works.
I have a Windows Server 2012 instance running on Amazon AWS with a public IP address. I am using it as an SCCM (System Center 2012 Configuration Manager) Server (so it is a Domain Controller also). I realize that it's probably not best practice to use a public
IP here, but I'm in a weird position where we are not connecting any of the Clients to the actual Domain (they are Workgroup computers all around the world). The goal here is to use SCCM to deploy software packages to all of the Clients, which are not on the
    same LAN/VPN/Domain.
This is my first time setting something up like this, so I followed this guide. I am able to get the Workgroup computers to show up in the SCCM Server Device list (via manual client install), but these Workgroup computers need access to the Server's shares
to download the software packages. On Amazon, I opened all ports and allowed all IPs to communicate with the Server. I am able to RDP into the Server from any Workgroup computer using the IP address, but cannot access the Server's SMB shares even though I
am attempting the connection with a Domain account with access to those shares.
I decided to see if I can even connect to the shares locally on the Server. Logging in with an account with administrator privileges, I can access \\localhost\shares without
a problem. But when I try to do \\X.X.X.X\shares,
it asks for user/pass (confirming that it is able to connect) and I put in the correct credentials for the account with administrator privileges (using DOMAIN\ACCOUNT), but it continually says that the user/pass is incorrect. After I click cancel, an error
comes up saying "Error Code 0x80004005 Unspecified Error".
It is crazy to me that the administrator account that is logged in cannot access the local shares via the public IP address... obviously no remote computer would be able to access the shares if the Server itself cannot. I have tried disabling the firewall,
but this makes no difference. I am able to ping the IP from the Server and I get a response.
I have searched around the internet for a solution but nothing has worked. Here are some of the suggestions I've found (that have failed):
    - Making sure "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is installed and enabled for the Ethernet Adapter
    - Enabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP in IPv4 properties
    - Ensuring IPv6 is disabled
    - Server, TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, and Workstation (services) are all running
Any ideas? Sorry for such a long post, just wanted to get as many details as I could. All help is appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi,
Are there any anti-virus software or other third party products running on the server? If yes, please disable them to see if it resolves the issue.

  • Hyper-V Gen 2 Windows Server 2012 R2 VM cannot define static IP address

    Hi,
I have setup a physical server with Windows Server 2012 R2. It has only the Hyper-V role installed. The physical server has two NICs that I have teamed with Hyper-V port as the load balancer. I have created 1 VM on this Hyper-V server that is a
Generation 2 VM running Windows Server 2012 R2. It has one NIC in the guest OS that is connected to the Hyper-V switch.
Now the Guest OS works fine and network connectivity is great when using DHCP but when I configure a static IP address in the Guest OS all network connectivity is lost even with correct IP configuration. Is this something to do with a Gen 2 VM?
A little more background - We have another Hyper-V server running Windows Server 2012 R2 with the same NIC teaming in the Host OS, on this Hyper-V there is a GEN 1 Windows Server 2012 R2 that has a static IP configured which is working normally.
    Any help is appreciated.

I have resolved the issue. It appeared the hard IP phones were using the same IP range that I was attempting to use so of course the VM could not use the IP Address. Silly mistake.
Elliot, I suggest you mark as Helpful and Answer any responses above that were helpful to you in getting this issue resolved. This is how the forums work.
For example, if a response mentioned "VM generation has no effect on the vNIC." and that pointed you in the direction of troubleshooting networking instead of wasting your time looking into VM generations, that may be considered "Helpful"
If a response mentioned "Make sure you're using valid IPv4 settings" and indeed you ended up having invalid IP settings such as a duplicate IP, this may be considered "Answer"

  • Printer Connections listed in Server 2012 R2 GPO cannot be removed.

We had a 2012 R2 Print Server crash as a result of a bad driver install. We were able to get the server running again but our users were experiencing erratic printing behavior.
The printers were pushed out via group policy before the Print Server had problems. We eventually chose to remove the printers from the directory and reversed the settings to deploy using group policy. We then deleted the offending printers
expecting group policy to update itself. Unfortunately, I now have two very import GPOs that are still showing "Printer Connections" that are pushing these printers to my users and computers. I am unable to delete the printers from the computers
but more importantly I need the "Printer Connections" setting to be removed so that it doesn't keep pushing out these printers any longer.
I have read numerous posts regarding this and can't seem to find a way to modify the policy directly and the Print Server is no longer active. We are running Server 2012 R2 with Windows 7 Pro clients. The Print Server was a member server and not a domain
    controller.
Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.
    Shawn

I can edit every setting but the one that shows in the report and yes I am logged in as a domain admin.
The clients are still having these printers pushed to them even though the print server is no longer active on the network. Since I can't reverse their publication to the GPOs from a non-existent server I looked for a way to modify the policy but there is
    none.
According to the report the setting should exist under Computer Configuration>Policies>Windows Settings. There is no such object in GPO Editor.
Very aggravating. At this point I am in the process of recreating the GPOs that were affected. In the future I will use dedicated policies for publishing printers so that I can simply delete the policy if this should occur again. However, it
seems odd that a setting that is displayed in the report does not correspond to any setting in the Group Policy Management Editor.

  • Server 2012 R2 RDS – cannot log off user session

We have a 2 server RDS RemoteApp Farm.
One server is constantly leaving user sessions in a disconnected state without the ability to kill the session (rebooting is the only way); this is happing 1-2 times per week.
Servers have been configured to kill a disconnected session after 10 minutes, but some disconnected sessions have been running for days.
Below is a screenshot of the process running for two disconnected users sessions that I could not disconnect, rebooting the server was the only way of fixing this. No error's were generated when users disconnected the session.
Is there a known fix for this?

    Hi,
Did you apply session disconnected policy setting in your environment?
There are different ways for getting user log off. As you have commented that it’s happening with specific user, once check whether the user profile is not corrupted or any other related case. Also it might relates that some application or related services
is still running under user profile so that session cannot be logged off. You can also try PowerShell command to log off the user. Also with
Query user command you can find the related session name and ID and then with “Logoff user command” you can logoff the specific user.
For policy related to session setting you can check beneath article. (point 1)

  • CSM 4.0.1 is removing ACS Server password and then cannot add a new

    Hi,
We just wanted to use CSM 4.0.1 to change ACS Server keyword on a FWSM 3.2(5) but in the transcript I see how he removes the key and then the next statement is to add a 127.0.0.1 ACS Server that I have never defined and that failes because the connection is lost.
Can CSM be used to change the ACS keyword and not loose the connection before changing it? The product allows such a change and does not stop albeit it should now that this is unsuccessful.

I think there are multiple problems, first it removes the key but does not add one and then it wants to add 127.0.0.1 to it and does not use an interface?

I would say that it it the interface problem but not that it had no interface but it had another interface.
The whole interface story is somewhat stupefying for me.
What I wanted to do is to use a single AAA Server definition for all my contexts on a FWSM, due to multiple imports in the beginning I ended up having 40 or so in the objects.
Each interface that we have on a context has a different name and it looks like CSM has a problem with this. We have tried to use interface with wildcards, but you cannot specify something like *context* or *vlan*. For us *context* is inside and *vlan* is outside.
This verification of the AAA Server should be done before trying to deploy and then not having access. Luckily all our contexts had their own AAA connection setup, so I could make changes. Because we have not used the local use for more than 3 years and had 3 weeks to search it. We almost rebooted the FWSM this Sunday (using a maintenance window) but found the password last thursday.

  • Windows Server 2012 - Hyper-V - Cluster Sharded Storage - VHDX unexpectedly gets copied to System Volume Information by "System", Virtual Machines stops respondig

We have a problem with one of our deployments of Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V with a 2 node cluster connected to a iSCSI SAN.
    Our setup:
Hosts - Both run Windows Server 2012 Standard and are clustered.
HP ProLiant G7, 24 GB RAM. This is the primary host and normaly all VMs run on this host.
HP ProLiant G5, 20 GB RAM. This is the secondary host that and is intended to be used in case of failure of the primary host.
We have no antivirus on the hosts and the scheduled ShadowCopy (previous version of files) is switched off.
    iSCSI SAN:
    QNAP NAS TS-869 Pro, 8 INTEL SSDSA2CW160G3 160 GB i a RAID 5 with a Host Spare. 2 Teamed NIC.
    Switch:
DLINK DGS-1210-16 - Both the network cards of the Hosts that are dedicated to the Storage and the Storage itself are connected to the same switch and nothing else is connected to this switch.
    Virtual Machines:
    3 Windows Server 2012 Standard - 1 DC, 1 FileServer, 1 Application Server.
1 Windows Server 2008 Standard Exchange Server.
All VMs are using dynamic disks (as recommended by Microsoft).
    Updates
We have applied the most resent updates to the Hosts, VMs and iSCSI SAN about 3 weeks ago with no change in our problem and we continually update the setup.
    Normal operation:
Normally this setup works just fine and we see no real difference in speed in startup, file copy and processing speed in LoB applications of this setup compared to a single host with two 10000 RPM Disks. Normal network speed is 10-200 Mbit, but occasionally
we see speeds up to 400 Mbit/s of combined read/write for instance during file repair.
    Our Problem:
Our problem is that for some reason a random VHDX gets copied to System Volume Information by "System" of the Clusterd Shared Storage (i.e. C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\System Volume Information).
All VMs stops responding or responds very slowly during this copy process and you can for instance not send CTRL-ALT-DEL to a VM in the Hyper-V console, or for instance start task manager when already logged in.
This happens at random and not every day and different VHDX files from different VMs gets copied each time. Some time it happens during daytime wich causes a lot of problems, especially when a 200 GB file gets copied (which take a lot of time).
    What it is not:
We thought that this was connected to the backup, but the backup had finished 3 hours before the last time this happended and the backup never uses any of the files in System Volume Information so it is not the backup.
    An observation:
When this happend today I switched on ShadowCopy (previous files) and set it to only to use 320 MB of storage and then the Copy Process stopped and the virtual Machines started responding again. This could be unrelated since there is no way to see
how much of the VHDX that is left to be copied, so it might have been finished at the same time as I enabled  ShadowCopy (previos files).
    Our question:
Why is a VHDX copied to System Volume Information when scheduled ShadowCopy (previous version of files) is switched off? As far as I know, nothing should be copied to this folder when this functionis switched off?

    Hallo Lawrence!
Thankyou for youre reply, some comments to help you and others who read this thread:
First of all, we use Windows Server 2012 and the VHDX as I wrote in the headline and in the text in my post. We have not had this problem in similar setups with Windows Server 2008 R2, so the problem seem to be introduced in Windows Server 2012.
These posts that you refer to seem to be outdated and/or do not apply to our configuration:
    The post about Dynamic Disks:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee941151(v=WS.10).aspx is only a recommendation for Windows Server 2008 R2 and the VHD format. Dynamic VHDX is indeed recommended by Microsoft when using Windows Server 2012 (please look in the optimization guide
    for Windows Server 2012).
Infact, if we use fixed VHDX then we would have a bigger problem since fixed VHDX are generaly larger then Dynamic Disks, i.e. more data would be copied and that would take longer time = the VMs would be unresponsive for a longer time.
The post "What's the deal with the System Volume Information folder"
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/oldnewthing/archive/2003/11/20/55764.aspx is for Windows XP / Windows Server 2003 and some things has changed since then. for instance In Windows Server 2012, Shadow Copies cannot be controlled by going to Control panel -> System.
Instead you right-click on a Drive (i.e. a Volume, for instance the C drive/Volume) in Computer and then click "Configure Shadow Copies".
Windows Server 2008 R2 Backup problem
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/windowsbackup/thread/0fc53adb-477d-425b-8c99-ad006e132336 - This post is about the Antivirus software trying to scan files used during backup that exists in the System Volume Information folder and we do not
have any antivirus software installed on our hosts as I stated in my post.
    Comment that might help us:
So according to “System Volume Information” definition, the operation you mentioned is Volume Shadow Copy. Check event viewer to find Volume Shadow Copy related event logs and post them.
    Why?
Furhter investigation suggests that a volume shadow copy is somehow created even though the Schedule for Shadows Copies is turned off for all drives. This happens at random and we have not found any pattern. Yesterday this operation took almost all available
disk space (over 200 GB), but all the disk space was released when I turned on scheduled Shadow Copies for the CSV.
    I therefore draw these conclusions:
The CSV Volume has about 600 GB of disk space and since Volume Shadows Copy used 200 GB, or about 33% of the disk space, and the default limit is 10% then I conclude that for some reason the unscheduled Volume Shadow Copy did not have any limit (or ignored
    the limit).
When I turned on the Schedule I also change the limit to the minimum amount which is 320 MB and this is probably what released the disk space. That is, the unscheduled Volume Shadow Copy operation was aborted and it adhered to the limit and deleted the
Volume Shadow Copy it had taken.
I have also set the limit for Volume Shadow Copies for all other volumes to 320 MB by using the "Configure Shadow Copies" Window that you open by right clicking on a drive (volume) in Computer and then selecting "Configure Shadow Copies...".
It is important to note that setting a limit for Shadow Copy Storage, and disabaling the Schedule are two different things! It is possible to have unlimited storage for Shadow Copies when the Schedule is disabled, however I do not know if this was the case
Before I enabled Shadow Copies on the CSV since I did not look for this.
I now have defined a limit for Shadow Copy Storage to 320 MB on all drives and then no VHDX should be copied to System Volume Information since they are all larger than 320 MB.
Does this sound about right or am I drawing the wrong conclusions?

There is something strange about the limits on the Secondary host!
I have not in any way changed the settings on the Secondary host and as you can see, the Secondary host has a maximum limit of only 35 MB storage on the CSV, but it also shows that this is 10% of the Volume. This is clearly not the case since 10% if 600
    GB = 60 GB!
The question is, why does it by default set a too small limit (i.e. < 320 MB) on the CSV and is this the cause of the problem? I.e. is the limit ignored since it is smaller than the smallest amount you can provide using the GUI?
Is the default 35 MB maximum Shadow Copy limit a bug, or is there any logical reason for setting a limit that according to the GUI is too small?

  • Windows Explorer View, Server 2012 and WebDAV

I am using SharePoint Server 2013 on Windows Server 2012. I cannot get Windows Explorer View working from client machines on this server. These machines are Windows 8, running IE 10 (I am also having problems on my Windows 7 / IE 9 machine).
I have done everything on the client that I have read about (Trusted Site, the WebClient services, the patch mentioned in a Kb article), but to no avail.
The client machines CAN open Windows Explorer View on a SharePoint Foundation site that I have hosted on the internet, although in this instance they access the internet directly, rather than through the company network.
Therefore, I take it that my problem lies either on our SharePoint server, or somewhere in the network. The Proxy does not seem to be a problem as this is bypassed for local sites.
Somedody said for an earlier version of SharePoint that the WebDAV server role should be
disabled (which seems counter-intuitive).  Does this make sense, or what else should I be looking at on either my server or in the network environment?

    Thanks for the reply.
I get the standard message ("We're having a problem opening this location in File Explorer. Add this web site to your Trusted Sites list and try again"). I am not using HTTPS.
I do not think that the WebDAV is irrelevant on the server, as there are two separate things there:
Desktop Experience Feature, which installs the WebClient service to allow the server to use WebDAV, and
WebDAV Publiching Role under Common HTTP functions
Curiously, after removign the WebDAV Publishign Role, my Win7/IE9 pc (which is not logged on to my client's domain (although I access their network and use SharePoint in my browser) DOES allow Windows Explorer View.
The domain PCs do not allow it, still.  They get challnged for a user name and password three times before they get the standard message.  But, I did test a machine of their connecting to an internet-hosted website, and it could use Explorer View.

  • Unable to Connect to SQL 2000 Instance from Windows Server 2012 environment

We have a windows server (TEST) 2012 environment , where our test SQL Server 2012 instance is hosted.
We have a different (DEV) Server (windows 2000)  where a SQL Server 2000 instance is present.
When I RDP to our Windows Server 2012 box, I cannot connect to the SQL 2000 server instance from SQL Management Studio. (whereas I can connect to
the same server from my local machine which has windows 7 and SQL 2012 installed).
This is the error i see -
"A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name
is no longer available.) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)"
When run from SQL Agent Service from TEST (A Job which tries to connect to that SQL 2000 instance to read some data using SSIS) , we get the following
    error -
An OLE DB record is available.  Source: "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server"  Hresult: 0x80004005  Description: "[DBNETLIB][ConnectionRead
(recv()).]General network error. Check your network documentation.".
The same SSIS package runs successfully from my local machine.
Please, could someone advice how to resolve this situation?

    Thanks Olaf.
Its just that we have legacy systems here in our company, who, for some reason haven't upgraded their older infrastructure, whereas they have set up new Windows 2012/SQL 2012 environments for the newer sql instances where they want to transition to !
Not sure what the solution is honestly. It is affecting our timelines now. The infrastructure team needs to take a decision now, as to what to do.
I do have to add, we were able to connect to these "older" servers from our Windows 7 client machines which have SQL 2012 - both from SQL management studio & SSIS (using OLE-DB Provider for SQL Server).

  • Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Evaluation?

Can Microsoft please provide evaluation of Storage Server 2012 R2. Currently cannot find any links or info RE this but can 2012 non R2. Obviously partners and potential customers need to test the software before purchasing an appliance running it.

    That's the official link:
(LOL THERE IS NO TEXT THIS SIZE ANYWHERE, ALL I DID WAS DELETE ABOVE THIS IN THE QUOTE, HOW DO MS NOT GET HOW BAD THEY ARE AT EVEN A TEXT BOX?)
    Windows Storage Server 2012 Evaluation
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=34592
If you're MSFT partner you need to talk to your MSFT responsible staff about licensing, evaluation etc.
    That's for non R2.
Sorry can't quote inline, this is by far the worst ever text box I've ever used online. It adds and uses formatting but has no formatting options. Whoever thought that is OK should be fired.
I don't know what imaginary world people other than us live in but yes we are an MS partner, we deal with a distributor for licensing and MS products. Maybe things are different in USA or whatever but here in Aus the buck stops at us. Some imaginary "MSFT
responsible staff" doesn't exist. There is no such thing for us, we are the support, licensing experts, product experts etc etc. I wish so badly people would stop assuming on here.

  • SQL Server 2012- Memory Leak Issue

    Team,
We are running a Mission Critical Application on SQL Server 2012 SP2(11.0.5058) which is configured on Always ON Synchronous mode. Offlate due to heavy development work, Application team have come up with stating memory issues. I have analysed all the areas
and everything looks normal. Please suggest if we have to patch the latest CU4 for SQL Server 2012 SP2.
The checks were performed on the below areas:
    - Errorlog, System Logs - No errors reported.
    - There are close to 8 Databases hosted on the instances which are all configured for AlwaysON. SQL Server is running on VM Infrastructure and the total physical memory allocated is 96GB out of which SQL is capped for 92GB.
-The Page Life Expectancy is healthy and is showing a greater number. There are no Signal waits either or pending memory grants.
    - The writes are more than reads for one of the databases which is flagged with application team. There are no blockings & Deadlocks.
Please suggest me the future course of action and your inputs are much appreciated.
    Best Regards,
    Sharath

Actual issue is- Application team have reported a memory leak and their builds have significantly slowed down. They suspect that its Database memory leak. However I have verified from database end and gave the above inputs.
The AOAGs are good. I was looking for any pointers whether there are any bugs which is related to memory leaks in SQL Server 2012.  I know all of them are addressed with SQL Server 2012 SP2.
Application team has NO idea about SQL Server do they ? And to say SQL Server has memory leak you have to actually prove it did they showed any proof. Its common for application team to say SQL Server is leaking memory because they are unaware about fact
by default SQL Server would take as much memory as possible and would release when SQLOS asks it to do so. This might give sign that it is leaking memory BUT IT IS NOT.
As you already said AOAG is working fine so I am presuming there is nothing much to worry. To monitor memory usage in SQL Server 2012 you can use below counters
SQL Server: Memory Manager-- Target Server Memory (KB)
SQL Server: Memory Manager--Total Server Memory (KB)
SQL Server: Memory Manager- Free Memory (KB)
SQL Server: Memory Manager--Database Cache Memory (KB)

  • Trying to setup a redundant server for server 2012

have some questions  regarding creating a backup for an all in one server. The server has active directory, DNS, the file server and everything on it. I'm trying to create a redundancy setup in case of failure. So I was reading about failover clusters
and this seem to be what I need to do. I'm just a little bit confused. What is the difference between using hyper V and using clusters?
When I create a cluster and add servers to it, what exactly happens? For instance simplest case I have the main server with all the data. Now I bring in another machine with nothing on it. I install windows server 2012 on it and add it and the other computer
to a cluster. Does the data from the main server automatically get copied onto all the servers that are part of this cluster? At this point if one server fails will the other one take over?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

You can think about Hyper-V cluster Vs. generic cluster like Hyper-V is a beehive of an independent clusters :)
You need to install Windows Server 2012 R2, enable Hyper-V role, virtualize all workload (keep all tasks inside separate set of VMs, don't run anything inside parent partition and don't use multiple roles either) and configure guest VM cluster (make sure
you use shared VHDX for that).
Data is not copied, you use shared storage and control gets passed to another VM running on another physical host. That would provide you smallest amount of downtime (if any). From the other point of view VM HA *would* have some downtime (VM reboots on another
    physical host).
