Server 2012 R2 Update vs Windows 8.1 Update
Hi @all,
i am not sure about this Topic/request, but i hope you can help me :)
I have a Notebook ... Dell Inc., XPS 15 9530
So i installed Windows Server 2012 R2 Update.
After Installation of OS i installed all Driver's from Dell HomePage (Windows 8.1 Driver's) directly from the CAB Package.
After this i installed all Windows Updates from Microsoft Update.
Now i see, that in Windows Server 2012 R2 in compare to Windows 8.1 Update some Features are missing
1.) USB\VID_8087&PID_07DC\5&791A5BE&0&9 missing
2.) ACPI\VEN_ACPI&DEV_0008
-> Bluetooth i don't got working see 1. and 2.
-> WLAN i got working with enabling Wireless LAN Service
3.) Internet Explorer Extensions are Missing so no Flash works...
So my Question is, which Features and Function's i don't have in Windows Server 2012 R2 Update compare to Windows 8.1
Please Help :)
By the way, my idea is...
Host: Server 2012 R2 incl. DHCP, NAT, WDS, WSUS, SCVMM/ScSM/ScOrch
Hypervisor's: VMware, HyperV, Citrix (all managed by SCVMM, ScOrch, ScSM)
virtual Machine's: DC, SCCM, Exchange, Lync, W8.1, W10, W7, W2K3, W2K8R2, W2K12, W10S
In addition to what Dave is saying about finding drivers from the vendor (Microsoft does not write drivers for those devices, so it is up to the hardware vendor to provide them), you have a pretty aggressive desire for your little notebook.
"By the way, my idea is...
Host: Server 2012 R2 incl. DHCP, NAT, WDS, WSUS, SCVMM/ScSM/ScOrch
Hypervisor's: VMware, HyperV, Citrix (all managed by SCVMM, ScOrch, ScSM)
virtual Machine's: DC, SCCM, Exchange, Lync, W8.1, W10, W7, W2K3, W2K8R2, W2K12, W10S"
A single physical machine can run only a single hypervisor - you have listed three. Your best option is to use Hyper-V and forget the others. If you are running a hypervisor on a system, you should not run any other services in the parent partition,
so your idea of running DHCP, NAT, WDS, WSUS, SCVMM/SCSM/SCO on the host in addition to Hyper-V is a bit of a pipe dream. That means you need to move those into VMs. You can most likely build all the VMs you have listed, but unless you have a laptop
with boatloads of memory, you are not likely to be able to get them all running at the same time. From what I can tell, your particular Dell laptop can have a maximum of 16 GB of RAM. That's pretty good, but far short of what you would need unless
you want everything to really limp along.

Hi Tim,
thx for the text, but the text doesn't answer my question...
I now, what i do, and why i want to work with scvmm.
host: w2k12R2 with DHCP, NAT, SCVMM, WDS, MDT, WSUS
1. vm = DC, DNS
2. vm = hyperV
3. vm = vmware
4. vm = citrix
5. - 10. vm = w7, w8.1, w10, w2k3, w2k8r2, w2k12r2 (all installed over mdt/scvmm)
11. - 17. vm = msx2010, msx2013, lync2010, lync2013, sccm, scsm, scorch (all installed over mdt/scvmm)
that i dont start 2 - 4 at the same time is correct but by the way i Need a lab where i can test on every Plattform ;)
but my request was about Bluetooth and Different Features from w2k12r2 to w8.1update... ;)

Apologies if this is not the right place or this has been posted before (I looked and didn't find anything)
I am unable to install SQL Server 2014 Express LocalDb on Windows 8.1 Update 1, as I get an 'Operating System not Supported' error message right away.
What can I do to get this working?Hi Zgreve,
Usually, from
hardware and software requirements for installing SQL Server 2014, we can install SQL Server Express version on the Windows 8.1. For more information, see:

SQL Server 2012 Standard compatibility with Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard
Hi,
Is SQL Server 2012 Standard compatibility with Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard.
In volume licensing portal Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard is not provided in the list of OS supported for SQL server 2012.Hi Ajit,
Besides other post, please also note that
Service Pack 1 or
a later update is needed for the support of SQL 2012 on Windows Server 2012 R2.
For more details about how to use SQL Server in Windows Server 2012 R2, please review the following KB article.

I am trying to install WSUS role on Windows Server 2012 R2 using dedicated SQL Instance with static port on remote SQL Server 2012 SP1 CU7 on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Please let me know if anyone has experienced this issue. We were trying to install WSUS role on Windows Server 2012 R2 using dedicated SQL Instance with static port on remote SQL Server 2012 SP1 CU7 on Windows Server 2012 R2.
It verifies the connection and then throws the error:
The request to add or remove features on the specified server failed. The operation cannot be completed, because the server you specified requires a restart.
Same error even after rebooting the server multiple times.

Remote SQL Server: Windows Server 2012 SP1 CU7 hosted on Windows Server 2012 R2
Event ID 7000:
The Windows Internal Database service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not start due to a logon failure.
Event ID 7041
The MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID service was unable to log on as NT SERVICE\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID with the currently configured password due to the following error:
Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.
Service: MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID
Domain and account: NT SERVICE\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID
This service account does not have the required user right "Log on as a service."
User Action
Assign "Log on as a service" to the service account on this computer. You can use Local Security Settings (Secpol.msc) to do this. If this computer is a node in a cluster, check that this user
right is assigned to the Cluster service account on all nodes in the cluster.
If you have already assigned this user right to the service account, and the user right appears to be removed, check with your domain administrator to find out if a Group Policy object associated
with this node might be removing the right.
I found following article:
"MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID service was unable to log on as NT SERVICE\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID" error when you install WID in Windows Server 2012
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2832204/en-us
To work around the issue, use one of the following methods:
Assign the Log on as a service user right to NT SERVICE\ALL SERVICES in the GPO that defines the user right.
Exclude the computer from the GPO that defines the user right.
We moved the SCCM server to OU where no policies were getting applied and then applied the new GPO to that OU. Restarted the server and we were able to install WSUS role.

Upgrading Windows Server 2012 Essential Eval to Windows Server 2012 R2 Retail
I need to upgrade from Windows Server 2012 Essential Eval version to Windows Server 2012 R2 Retail. What would be the easiest way to upgrade if license $$ is not an issue? The Server is a DC. Would the following works:
1. Upgrade from Windows Server 2012 Essential Eval to Windows Server 2012 Essential Retail
2. Do a conversion from Windows Server 2012 Essential Retail to Windows Server 2012 Standard Retail (I suppose this just require several command line to enable the 2012 Standard)
3. Do an in-place upgrade from Windows Server 2012 Standard to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (there is no need to do migration, am I right?)
Thanks.I just did a simulation using Hyper V. It seems that I'm able to do the upgrade sequence as described but I'm not sure whether there are any side effect that not yet surface out. Here is the details steps that I took:
1. Under Windows Server 2012 Essential Eval
convert the Windows Server Essential 2012 Eval to Windows Server Standard 2012 using the following command in an elevated command prompot
dism /online /set-edition:ServerStandard /productkey:xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx /accepteula
press "y" and return to restart as prompted
the productkey could be retail key or the KMS client keys (just for installation not for activiation)
2. After reboot, the system become Windows Server 2012 Standard
using admin account to login
add admin account to the Enterprise Admins group and Schema Admins group if not already done so, logout and login again
mount the Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard disk in, say, drive d:
in an elevated command prompt, go the following:
cd d:\support\adprep
.\adprep.exe /forestprep
.\adprep.exe /domainprep
double click on d: in explore to run the Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard setup
follow the instruction to complete the in-place upgrade from Windos Server 2012 to Windows Server 2012 R2
3. After reboot into Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, go to the charms bar, select setting -> server info, it will mention the server is not activated, click on Activate Windows and key in the Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard retail key -
Downgrade Windows server 2012 64 bit to windows server 2008 R2 32 bit
HI,
what I want to know is when Downgrading Windows server 2012 64 bit to windows server 2008 R2 32 bit, will there be any issues of the license? Can I use the same license of 2012 server for the new 2008 installation.Hi,
Based on my experience, we cannot use the Windows Server 2012 license key to activate a Windows Server 2008 install.
In addition, which channel the windows server 2012 was purchased through? It seems that the media and product keys to downgrade are not provided although downgrade rights are granted
since Microsoft only supplies bits and product keys to Volume License customers and only for certain versions and editions of the software.
I recommend you to contact the Licensing Activation Centers below for assistance:

Recently have updated my Windows 8 and updated Itunes to mose recent version available. My Ipod 7th Generation Nano worked, connected and synced without difficulty prior to this updating, Now when I plug into my computer it will pop up Itunes but say that this Ipod is not recognized. I have done multiple steps offered to try and nothing has worked. Any other suggestions would be helpful. I just got this Ipod for Christmas and now can't even use it to sync content anymore.
Try a different cable. And are you connecting directly to your computer or through a USB hub?

Hi there;
I have a windows server 2008 SP2 (32bits) in which I have an instance of SQL Server
2008 and another of 2012.
My Windows server 2008 installed the following updates; (see below).
(KB2898858),(KB2909921),(KB890830),(KB2898869),(KB2911502),(KB2901126),
(KB2916036),(KB2862973),(KB2901113)
After the machine was re-started, I was not abble to connect
to the instance of SQL Server 2012. I am able
to connect to the instance of SQL Server 2008.
The error message I get when I atemp to connect can be found
at the end of the list of updates below.
Do I need to uninstall an update? if so, which one and how do I do that?

No process is on the other end of the pipeHi,
Check if SQL Server service is running fine. I doubt you may have changed the user account password used for SQL Server service. After restarting the machine, you also need to update the user account of SQL Server service in Configuration
Manager. Re-type the user account name and password under Log on tab and see how it helps.
Thanks.

New Windows Server 2012 unable connect to Netlogon Service or update DNS records
Hi everybody, all of my Windows Servers 2012 decided to collapse after innocuous group policy update that was meant to make user passwords more secure.
The AD and DNS seem to be functioning "normally", I am able to add new Windows7 and Windows Server 2008 machines to the domain, I can see them in listed in the AD and DNS record are update correctly, however, as soon as I try to join Windows Server

The reason the system could not register these RRs was because the update request it sent to the DNS server timed out. The most likely cause of this is that the DNS server authoritative for the name it was attempting to register or update is not running
at this time.
You can manually retry DNS registration of the network adapter and its settings by typing 'ipconfig /registerdns' at the command prompt. If problems still persist, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator.
and
Name resolution for the name _ldap._tcp.Default-First-Site-Name._sites.dc._msdcs.somedomain.com. timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.
When I try to ping the primary DC (WS2003) it fails, the Secondary DC (WS2012) responds.
The >nltest /sc_query:somedomain.com on Windows Servers 2012 returns:
Flags: 0
Trusted DC Name
Trusted DC Connection Status Status = 1311 0x51f ERROR_NO_LOGON_SERVERS
The command completed successfully
yet it works on all other machines.
I tried removing 2012 servers from the domain and rejoining - without success. The cookie crumbled when I added two new installations of Windows Server 2012 & 2008 and 2008 worked fine but 2012 showed same symptoms.
There is one peculiar thing that I had noticed on all Windows 2012 machines, it constantly showing "Workplace Connection - Connecting" in the networks pane on the right side of the screen, which I can't say i ever noticed before.
Unfortunately, the secondary DC is a multihoming server with Direct Access role - I am not sure if this may play some part but our existing configuration worked for a year now without any problems. Issue appeared when I changed the password complexity rule,
which boggles the mind. I wonder if there has been some other changes in GPO that did not propagate from years ago and finally comeback to break things.
Any suggestions would be really appreciated.
wminHello Ace, i wish you a Happy New Year! I hope your break was enjoyable and filled with cheer.
In the end I had to bite the bullet and reinstall all troublesome servers. Your recommendations from above removed some serious problems with the DA and DNS resolution.
I was able to attach new server to the domain without any problems and begin painful process of rebuild.
I have promoted TIGER to full DC controller role, but having some issues with replication. Although running >repadmid /showrepl gives positive
feedback, the sysvol folder on the secondary DC is empty.
Also there is a couple of warnings in the event log:
Event ID 4012
Log Name: DNS Server
Source: DNS-Server-Service
The DNS server is waiting for Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) to signal that the initial synchronization of the directory has been completed. The DNS server service cannot start until the initial
synchronization is complete because critical DNS data might not yet be replicated onto this domain controller. If events in the AD DS event log indicate that there is a problem with DNS name resolution, consider adding the IP address of another DNS server
for this domain to the DNS server list in the Internet Protocol properties of this computer. This event will be logged every two minutes until AD DS has signaled that the initial synchronization has successfully completed.
- which has not repeated since 3rd of Jan.
These events occur on the primary DC every few minutes:

Windows cannot query for the list of Group Policy objects. Check the event log for possible messages previously logged by the policy engine that describes the reason for this.

Event ID 1058

Log Name: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Windows cannot access the file gpt.ini for GPO CN={31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9},CN=Policies,CN=System,DC=somedomain,DC=com. The file must be present at the location <\\somedomain.com\sysvol\somedomain.com\Policies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\gpt.ini>.
(The network name cannot be found. ). Group Policy processing aborted.

Should sysvol folder be shared on the secondary DC? Another interesting thing to point out is that
\\somedomain.com\sysvol\somedomain.com\Policies\ can be access
from all other machines except the DC1.
Cheers!

Help - System Down
Environment:
HOST - Windows 2012 R2
PDC VM - Windows 2012 R2 VM
Terminal Server VM - Windows 2012 R2 VM
The system had been up 132 days and needed windows updates applying
The HOST and the Terminal Server VM updates applied and rebooted no problem.
On the PDC the updates appeared to have applied ok but on the PDC reboot I received the message ''Failure Configuring Windows Updates. Reverting Changes ......... "
The process then started but has been stuck at 8% for almost 2 hours.
What can I do?
It's 2:00am (New Zealand time) so off to bed in the hope it sorts itself out.
Any help appreciated!
PaulWhenever I got the same, I usually do a reset of Windows Update Components which always fixes my problems.
You can try it and the procedure is here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

My TechNet Wiki Articles -
Hello,
I run a small business network with five physical servers: three Dell servers running Windows Server 2008 R2, one custom build running 2008, and another custom build running 2012 with Domain Controller Role (same hardware for both custom builds).
The Dell servers are all running the Hyper-V role and each has a number of 2008 VMs. I also have a 2012 VM with the Domain Controller Role on one of the Hyper-V servers and another VM with a completely base install of 2012.
All servers are plugged into a Cisco SG300-52 switch which is uplinked to a Cisco 881 router which is connected to a cable TWC provided Ubee cable modem. I have no VLANs setup. I do have the Firewall on the router configured
to inspect most traffic.
Here is my problem: I cannot connect to most of the internet on ANY 2012 server (and all exhibit the exact same behavior), but I have NO problems connecting to the internet from 2008 servers. Here is what I already know:
1.) I can ping the outside world just fine so ICMP is passing to any external host.
2.) Two of the 2012 servers are DCs running DNS services and they can connect to the internet just fine for DNS requests because they are doing a perfectly good job of providing DNS services to my network.
3.) Here's where it gets really weird: I can browse in internet explorer to Bing.com and it works. I can also go to a couple other Microsoft websites (though they are very slow). If I click on any link in Bing, however, it doesn't
work and gives me a page not available error. If I connect to a non-MS website like Google or my company website, I get page not available.
4.) I have tried to telnet to port 80 at Bing and it works. I have tried to telnet to port 80 at google.com and it won't connect. The 2008 servers have no issue telneting to either bing or google on port 80 and none of my client
PCs on the network do either.
5.) Windows Update will not connect and neither will any other update service such as AVG (I have AVG Antivirus installed WITHOUT firewall on two of the three servers. The base 2012 VM has no software installed and no roles...I built it
just to see if it could connect after a fresh install and it still cannot.)
6.) The network connection does not indicate limited connectivity (probably because ICMP appears to be passing successfully)
7.) If I connect the server directly to the modem it has full internet access.
8.) All internal LAN connectivity is perfectly fine and runs at full speed.
9.) I have scoured the internet trying to find other examples of this particular kind of connectivity issue on 2012 and I have found two TechNet articles that are similar, but they both had the same resolution: changing the router
worked, but no one knows why. (I would have included the links, but apparently I cannot do that yet)
My question is this: What is different about Windows Server 2012 networking that would render it unable to communicate through a router that Windows Server 2008 has no problems with? I ask because, unlike in these two articles where they were
running personal networking equipment they could easily upgrade, I'm running a Cisco 881 with what should be virtually limitless configuration options and I have no desire to replace it. I have to assume the issue is somehow related to the firewall configuration,
which I could fix easily, but I don't know what to change. If anyone knows what changed in 2012 and why I would be able to browse to bing and other MS sites but no where else, please pass them along. Thanks. This is the IP Config for the 2012 DC:

NOTE: 10.10.10.220 and 10.10.10.221 are the other domain controllers on my network. One of them is 2012 and one of them is 2008. They are both functioning correctly for providing DNS services. The 2012 Virtual DC, however, still has
the internet connectivity issue that this whole post was about in the first place.
NOTE2: When I logged on to COMPANYDC02 this morning, it told me that I had new Windows Updates that needed to be downloaded. Confused, I checked the most recent time WU had checked for updates at it had successfully checked for updates last night
at 10pm. Of course, it failed when trying to download them, but it appears that once in a while, a connection gets through successfully... -
Issue installing SQL Server 2012(with SP1) on windows 7 Error result: -2067529718
When running the installation, it suddenly stops without any error popup.
I ran the installation from the command prompt and this is what I get:
An error occurred during the SQL Server 2012 Setup operation.
Error result: -2067529718
Result facility code: 1220
Result error code: 10
I recently uninstalled SQL Server 2012 SP1, because the SQL server service was not starting up, it would just hang in there with no response. I tried many things to get that issue fixed, finally I decided to uninstall and start fresh but I couldn't since
I was getting an error stating that I needed Windows 7 SP1(which was already installed). I downloaded the
microsoft fix it tool which fixed the issue.
On the control panel/Programs and features, I still see that SQL Server 2012 is listed if I click to uninstall again it tells me:
An error occurred while trying to uninstall Microsoft SQL Server 2012. it may have already been uninstalled. do you want to remove Microsoft SQL Server 2012 from the Programs and features list?
if I click yes, eventually it will be listed again.
currently I'm not able to install SQL server again and besides the info provided there are not error messages (I also copied the installation files to disk).
UPDATE: it appears that the sql server was not completely removed from the system, I still see listed the SQL server(SQLExpress) and server browser services on the SQL server configuration manager.
Thanks.1) First Reboot your server and try again for the installation.
2) If first fail again than Take a backup of Registry first for safe side and then delete the entries of SQL server 2012 if found take a reboot again and try to install again.
One more thing if installation created any file then move/Delete that also before installation.
