Server 2012 R2 VM packet loss issue

Hi all,Looking for opinions on a tricky issue. Working on a client job to add 2X Server 2012R2 VMs for DC and file server duty.Environment is as follows: 2 HP Proliant DL380p G8 hosts.
VMware vSphere 5.1 (Build and Update 5.1.0 build=build-1483097 (Update 2)Network adapters broadcom netXtreme BCM 5719. Driver Version: 3.135b.v50.1Both hosts are already running a mix for Windows 2003 and 2008 servers with general workloads like DCs, SQL, virtual applicances. they are having no issues with any of the current setup. However, the new 2012 R2 VMs I have added are experiencing packet loss. its random maybe every 5 minutes 3 or 4 packets are dropped and then the connection returns. A ping plotter trace over an hour will show red spikes dotted across it. Bare in mind these servers are of yet not doing anything, just been installed, patched. One...

I have two clustered hosts running Server 2012 R2. I have a NAS setup with iSCSI targets that I'm using for storage. I would like to setup a second NAS and replicate my VM's to the second NAS in case my primary NAS device fails. Is there anyway
I can have Hyper-V or VMM perform the replication?
You cannot do that AS IS. You do Hyper-V Replica between Hyper-V hosts and not using same on-site hosts and remote storage. Making long story short: you'll need another Hyper-V outside of your current cluster and it can store data (VMs) anywhere (including
that extra NAS, make sure it's actually an iSCSI SAN capable as there are no low-end models that support SMB3 and Hyper-V cannot use NFS for VM hosting). See:
Automated Disaster Recovery with Hyper-V Replica
http://blogs.technet.com/b/keithmayer/archive/2012/10/05/automate-disaster-recovery-plan-with-windows-server-2012-hyper-v-replica-and-powershell-3-0.aspx
"Hyper-V Replica enables Hyper-V hosts or clusters to enable distance replication of running VMs to
remote Hyper-V hosts over a standard IP WAN connection."
Hope this helped :)
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • Strange packet loss issue

    Hi all,
I am having a strange issue with my macbookpro recently. Here is the situation.
I have the TP-LINK wireless router both at home and work. IP address of this unit is 192.168.3.1 at home.
Recently i noticed a very high level of packet loss (60-70%) from my macbook pro when i pinged the default GW wireless router. I first thought its a wireless issue and tried debuging the issue from that end. I used my brother's macbook and he wasnt having this packet loss when i pinged from his terminal.
I then very randomly connected to my remote VPN server and noticed that the packetloss has disappeared when the VPN is connected and ping a remote IP such as 8.8.8.8.
Now i have two terminals running, one with a normal ping to 8.8.8.8 which goes via VPN and has 0% packet loss. Another terminal running a ping via interface en1 outside of the VPN interface using "ping -S 192.168.3.102 192.168.3.1" and this terminal is showing the same 60% packet loss.
Also strangely, this issue is only noticed at home router and not at work. At work the normal connection without VPN works fine.
I am at loss for ideas what could be causing this issue all of the sudden when the same settings were fine for over a year.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

No solutions yet... I doubt this is a hardware matter as the packet loss goes away almost instantly when i switch on the VPN or simply move to other networks... The strangest thing is the VPN connection that solves the packet loss.. One thinks if VPN is overlaying on en1 to make its connection, how come the packetloss ceases to exist once there is a peer2peer connecton active to the same interface with the packet loss issue. Very strange indeed.
I thought also this could only be a ICMP issue (ping protocol) however ever the browsing slows down when im normally connected to this network.
In some awkward way im happy someone else is reporting this as I thought this is a weird enough problem for no one to comment on for yearly 10 days...
Im going to run a tcpdump to see if there is anything strange moving abount on my interfaces whilst there is a packet loss... will inform if any interesting results appeared...

  • Server 2012 Standard Edition network teaming issue at bootup

I have a Windows server 2012 x64 standard edition server (not R2) using two Intel I210AT nic's on an ASUS P9D-X motherboard.  They are setup in a team using the Microsoft teaming.  No special options, latest updates and the latest Intel drivers.
The team is setup in switch independent mode and connected with quality cat6 cables to a Cisco 3600 switch.  No special options on the ports of the switches, no LACP or trunking, just standard unconfigured ports.
The problem we have is when the server is rebooted the team will not communicate with the network.  If we unplug one network cable communication begins.  We can then plug the cable back in and both
    ports work and communicate normally.
This issue is serious as it requires physical action on every restart.
We have tried deleting the team and recreating it and we get the same results.  Is there some specific change that needs to be made to make this work or is this possibly a known bug?

May be problem on Cisco side, Cisco is very clever, could assessed network traffic as a problem and close the port. When OS is running, then NIC Teaming working fine, but when you boot up server, "BIOS not running with NIC Teaming", in this moment
may occur problem on Cisco side.
I recommend, if you use Cisco, configure NIC Teaming in LACP mode and configure your two ports on Cisco to LACP, it's better way.

  • Latency and Packet Loss Issues

About a week ago, my internet began to have high latency (stable at around 250), and a small amount of packet loss. Since then, the latency has died down, going back to normal but every minute or so jumping back up to about 250 +/- 250 for about 30 seconds before going back down. The packet loss came about occasionally, and only around 1-2%, but earlier today was at about 10% and wouldn't drop.
From what I can tell, all of the issues appear randomly with nothing making them appear. Nothing has changed since before this started, it just came out of the blue.
I use a wireless connection as an ethernet cable won't reach to my PC.

  • Server 2012 R2 - Complete WSUS Installation Issue - The service cannot be started...

    Hi all,
installed SCCM 2012 R2 CAS on a 2012 server. The SQL is off box on a server cluster. I've installed WSUS through the 'Add Roles and Features'. I configured it to have local storage for the content and a remote DB instance (called SQL1 on our cluster). All this
worked well and the install completed as expected. I checked the SQL cluster and the "SUSDB" database was created ok.
As a final step, i went to Tools in Server Manager and launched Windows Server Update Services. This brought up the 'Complete WSUS Installation' dialogue box. I entered the exact same DB info as i had done when completing the initial install of WSUS:
Yet when i hit 'run' the following message returns:
The relevant bit of logging is shown here:
    2015-01-14 16:58:42  Starting service W3SVC

Since i'm pretty sure i need WSUS working correctly to use it for SCCM, can anyone suggest what my problem is here? I'd assume it's falling down because the 'ConfigureWebsite' job can't start but what service does that need to run?
Really stumpoed by this so any help would be much appreciated! Thanks

Did you install the Web Server role before installing the WSUS Server role? Is the Web Server role already installed? If so, is it installed and configured in a compatible manner with the WSUS role?

  • Bouts of packet loss and complete loss of connection

Ok forum, I give up! I need your help.
I have an E1200 and am time out and packet loss issues. The internet connection is fine for 30 seconds to five minuets and then everything times out for 15-20 seconds. Although it’s only a minor incontinence to web browsing, it makes playing games and watching videos a nightmare. “Lost connection to server error.” and the like…
This is what I have done to remedy the problem.
I upgraded to a new router, the e1200 I am currently using, from my Tenda 10/100 N. The problems where the same that I am experience currently and the reason I bought it in the firs place.
When I directly connect to the cable modem, I have no issues and everything is fine.
I have run a trace route and the second hop, (the router to the modem) is the choke point.
I have cloned the MAC address
I have updated the firmware and hard reset
I have throttled my MTU to automatic, 1500, and 1472. None making any difference.
I have disabled NAT and all that does is kill my internet connection
I have disabled all firewalls router and windows, no change.
I replaced the physical wire from the router to the modem.
I have disconnected all devices except one computer, and no difference.
I ran a DNS trace and I have… non routable local internet address 192.168.1.1
    DNS-cac-lb-01.rr.com and DNS-cac-lb-02.rr.com
I am using windows 7 and my ISP is time Warner so-cal. Help me obiwan, you’re my only hope.

Sorry friend. I have not had the gaul to load the 1.0 firmware. I am 99% sure I have the 2.0 hardware. I did however unplug my modem for an hour and then try and reconnect. The result was a lossless environment for fifteen to twenty minuets (a long time for me.). But, I am right back still having the same problem. A friend gave me a new netgear router, I am going to try that and I am going to go to Timewarner and have them replace my modem just to make sure there is nothing wrong with the surfboard. I will report back with my findings.

  • Packet loss when flood pinging a Mac

I had some trouble transferring large files between my iMac and my MBP the other day and so started a bit of investigation. Mistake really - here is what I found:
All mac targets are running up-to-date Leopard and use intel processors.
The home network has a linksys wireless router - all devices connected by copper.
flood ping tests with command 'sudo ping -f <target>:
from iMac to MBP shows 30% packet loss
from MBP tp iMac shows 33% packet loss
from iMac to windows laptop 0% packet loss
from iMac to linksys router 0% packet loss
from iMac to Freecom NAS box 0% packet loss
from MBP to windows laptop 0% packet loss
from MBP to linksys router 0% packet loss
from MBP to Freecom NAS box 0% packet loss
I took the macbook to work and picked targets on another site, several busy switch hops away.
from MBP to windows desktop 0% packet loss
from MBP to another iMac 26% packet loss
from MBP to mac mini 28% packet loss
from MBP to linux server 0% packet loss
from linux server to MBP 32% packet loss
The firewall is off on all the targets.
Seem clear enough - Mac machines can't handle high ping loads. It is no good telling me they don't have to. If they can answer a ping at all, they should be able to handle the load. It is a perfectly acceptable way of stress testing the link. File transfers are generally not an issue but now I want to know...
Why can't the macs handle the ping floods?
Is this indicative of any other weakness in the IP stack?
    Pete

I had a suspicion of packet loss on my internet connection but could not be certain it was the ISP at fault. The fact that I had been having trouble transferring large files between my machines led me to look for possible local problems.
Network fault finding should always examine the hardware first so I wanted to see if there was anything about the cabling or the router which might be causing packet loss.
Actually copying data about the network is a pretty poor way to test things because you have several additional layer of complexity that can colour the results.
When I had narrowed down the flood ping packet loss to the macs, I went hunting on the 'net. There were plenty of people who were reporting various kinds of packet loss. Enough of them that I wondered if there was something more to it. Some of them were talking about similar symptoms to mine. The respondents usually answered a question other than the one asked so I thought I would put up some tests and see if there was actually a problem anywhere.
Now I know it is a 'feature' rather than a fault, I can work around it.
    Thanks anyway
    Pete

  • Tons of packet loss and Verizon techs say its fine

As you can see from the below test ran from dslreports.com, I'm having a lot of packet loss issues. This has been going on for nearly two weeks now and tech support has been more of an annoyance than a help upto this point. I've talked to tech support at least 5 times only to be told my line test comes back fine, its normal, reset your modem, delete your cookies, is your pc old, etc. I've even had them vpn itno my system and run pings and they see the packet loss and all the issues I'm having first hand and still  say it isn't a big deal. On more than one occasion I've had my modem data light just flashing and had to reset the modem and they suggest I just buy a new modem. Seriously, is this how bad tech support has gotten?
I've shown them test after test after test and the all come back pretty much the same... The thing is its been perfect for years and suddenly this and its like tech support wants to sweep it under the rug or something.  I've had it suggested to me the packet loss and high pings when I'm not getting the packet loss is due to my pool being over populated.  Like I'm ow getting ping averages of 250-300 instead of 30-40s, again when its not all timing out.
I've posted over on the dslreports forums asking about this as well as in the Verizon specific forums to the techs all with 0 replies from anything and was told to come here and see if anyone would be able to help.
I really not bother with the hassle of switching isps as ive been a loyal Verizon dsl customer for well over 5 years but at this point just knowing how bad tech support is alone might make me want to.
Can anyone offer any insight on what else to do or help on this possibly?
    Thanks.

    try
    items = rs.ListChildren("/", true);
    catch (Exception e)
    Console.WriteLine(e.Message);
When executed, this code throws an exception (which is caught and displayed) : "The item '/' cannot be found. (rsItemNotFound)"
The same code works (i.e. does not throw any exception and the items variable contains some CatalogItem) when used against a SQL Server 2012 configured in native mode.
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here, maybe the first parameter shouldn't be "/" but something else?

I'm getting this error as well.  My test software is connecting to two different servers; one is running on SharePoint 2010 and I have no problems using the ReportingService2010 functions on that, but I am getting this same error when trying to connect
to a service on SharePoint 2013.

  • Serial Port communication very slow in RDP on windows server 2012

Hellò, we have installed a new server 2012 and connected some thinclients via RDP, since that moment all peripherals connected to the imported com ports of the thinclients are running very slow, for example the cash register issue any receipt only after
15-20 seconds!!. We have try to connect via RDP also a personal computer with many other OS like windows 8, windows 7, or XP but the result is the same: 15-20 seconds for a receipt!! We solve the problem only changing the server 2012 with a old server
2008 or 2003!. How is possible window server 2012 is so slow on RDP imported com ports??. There is something to set for speed up the com ports on rdp? For us this is a great problem, all of our customers are using cash register via RDP and they can't wait
all this time for a receipt. For your information we have tried to connect the cash register to the same com port of the same thinclient to the same server 2012 without RDP and the issue of the receipt is fast, so the problem is something on RDC of the new
OS windows Server 2012. Also note this is a bi-directional communication because the cash register use a bi-directional communication for printing each one of the voice on the receipt, this problem wll not affect other printers unidirectional where the
print process starting in less one second. Please help us to solve this problem, otherwise we will not more install windows server 2012.

    Hi,
Thanks for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
When the slow performance issue occurs on server 2012, check the Windows Logs – Application category of the Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) on both the client and server sides. If there is any logs recorded, please let us know them. Please also check the
driver is properly installed on server and check the compability guide with the cash register machine, whether it support server 2012 with remote session. If there is particular requirement then you need to solve them first.
In addition, would like you to try connecting with RDP 8.1 and check whether it faces same issue.
Remote Desktop Protocol 8.1 Update for Windows 7 SP1 released to web
    Hope it helps!

Any suggestions? Thanks for any help.

    Hello,
The issue may occure when the installation of your SQL Server is not a complete or a successful one. Did you try to repair or reinstall the SQL Server Express?  You can also try to install
Service Pack 1 for SQL Server 2012
to check if the issue presists.

  • Using Windows Server 2012 per-User RDS CAL on Server 2008 R2 Session Host

I have a Remote Desktop Licensing Server setup on my domain controller running Windows Server 2012 R2. I have installed a
’Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Services per-User CAL’ there and activated the licensing server already.
Currently I use ONLY Windows Server 2008 R2 machines as RDS Session Hosts (in the future I plan to transition them to 2012 R2, hence the CAL I bought is
    already in the newest version).
I have already configured my WS 2008 RDS Session Hosts: set
Per-User licensing mode and specified license server address. The connectivity between my Session Host(s) and my License Server seems to be ok as the
Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration window on the Session Host correctly lists the 2012 per-user
license (CAL installed on server) from the license server.
On the License Server I can also see event logs entries (in
Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-Licensing/Admin), indicating that the user has been issued a license.
The issue I am having is that the license being issued is
2008 Per User CAL license (Build-in OverUsed - temporary) and not the 2012 Per User CAL license which is the only license installed on the server. According to the RDS CAL interoperability matrix at
social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/14988.rds-and-ts-cal-interoperability-matrix.aspx, I was expecting the 2012 license to be backward-compatible with 2008 client (and that
in the absence of legacy licenses, the (only) 2012 license would be used for all clients connecting to the licensing server)
Before I bought my license, I found this document:
    download.microsoft.com/download/3/D/4/3D42BDC2-6725-4B29-B75A-A5B04179958B/WindowsServerRDS_VLBrief.pdf
which says that - "newer version RDS CALs can be used with an older version of the server software" (In section FAQ, Q4), which means to me that
the 2012 license would work as-is for the 2008 Server and gives me flexibility when upgrading to the new server version.
How can I make this CAL work in my environment?
    Note:
    I have already explicitly disabled
Prevent license upgrade Group Policy setting which I assumed would fix the issue but nothing has changed.
Then I have enabled License server security group Group Polity setting
and added computers from my domain to RDS Endpoint Servers AD group. I have also created new AD group called
Terminal Server Computers and added the computer accounts there, but it changes
    nothing. Reference - technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee791761.aspx , technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725704.aspx and blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2009/09/17/control-the-issuance-of-rds-cals.aspx.
I found one potential ‘workaround’ which involved manually downgrading my CAL license by calling
Microsoft Clearinghouse. I am very reluctant do to so because, as I upgrade parts of my infrastructure to Server 2012, I’d need to then ask Microsoft to manually upgrade a part of my license back as well.
Am I missing something? What should I do to get my 2012 CAL to be issued to 2008 R2 server

Hi, I have tried several other possibilities.
I change expire date for my temporary assigned license (2008 CAL overused). It can be done, by changing Active Directory user properties – msTSExpireDate. When I restart my Session Host server and logged again, my license was renewed
for next 60 days (event ID - 4145).
I also delete information about license for this user (clear msTSExpireDate and msTSLicenseVersion). And the license was successfully removed from License Manager. After another SH restart it gets the same – 2008 overused – license
(event ID 4143 - license server has successfully issued …)
I now, that changing info in AD attributes is a little trick, and this is not a real value - only a reference, but it was useful to delete or change expiration date of license. But it didn’t change type of license as I expected.

    To TP:
I have found your post with information:
If you have a Server 2012 RD Licensing server you may install your 2012 RDS CALs on it (no downgrade necessary) and then set your Server 2008 R2 RDSH to
use the 2012 RDL server.  The 2012 RD Licensing server will automatically issue the CALs as 2008. -

And it showing my situation in brief. I also found
similar problems, but the solutions don’t meet my expectations.

  • Migrating KMS Services from Server 2003 Servers to Server 2012 R2

We have two Windows Server 2003 boxes that a previous administrator had setup as our KMS Servers.
These servers appear to be activating Office 2010, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008R2 and 2003
I can see these activations taking place in the KMS logs on each server.
The question is what are the steps that we need to take to get the KMS Services migrated to Server 2012 without causing any activation issues in the current environment?  I've be unable to come up with the proper order of operations from researching
blogs and I'm just not sure how to get where I need to go, what keys to use etc.
Since this was setup by a previous administrator, there is no documentation on what was done, what keys were used etc.
    KMS Server 1:
    slmgr /dlv
Name:  Office(TM) 14, ProPlusKMSHost edition   (Partial Product Key C6PWX)
    Description:  Office(TM) 14 KMS, VOLUME_KMS channel
    Name:   Windows(TM) Server 2003 KMS, W7R2-Kms3 edition
Description:   Windows(TM) Server 2003 KMS, VOLUME_KMS_R2_B channel (Partial Product Key VX348)
    KMS Server 2:
    slmgr /dlv
Name:  Office(TM) 14, ProPlusKMSHost edition   (Partial Product Key 3T9QW)
    Description:  Office(TM) 14 KMS, VOLUME_KMS channel
    Name:   Windows(TM) Server 2003 KMS, W7R2-Kms3 edition
Description:   Windows(TM) Server 2003 KMS, VOLUME_KMS_R2_B channel (Partial Product Key TT78P)
Of Note, we are a Microsoft Software Assurance customer and have Volume Licensing
In Summary, I would like to understand how to move my KMS Services to a new 2012 Server(s) and decommission the old 2003 boxes running KMS without disruption.  As a final step I'd also like to be able to activate Windows 8, Server 2012, and Office 2013.

    Hi,
If you wanted to slowly transition and verify... you could stand up new KMS host and make the priority of the SRV record lower so that clients will always connect to new server first and fall back to original box second.
    Steps to migrating the KMS:
    1. Uninstall the KMS host key first by running the following command:
    slmgr -upk
    2. Then, install the default kms key by running the following command:
slmgr /ipk [KMS Client Setup Key]
The default KMS client setup keys can be found here:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc303280.aspx
    3. Delete the record from the DNS:
    Open DNS console:
Expand _tcp node under the domain.com. There will be a record _VLMCS. Delete this record.
    4. The KMS server is uninstalled.
    5. To install KMS on a new server, enter:
    cscript C:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /ipk <KmsKey>
then to activate the KMS host, enter:
    cscript C:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /ato
    6. After activation is complete, restart the Software Licensing Service.
    7. Verify that the record is created for the new server in the DNS.
To verify that the KMS host is configured correctly, you can check the KMS count to see if it is increasing. Run slmgr.vbs /dli on the KMS host to obtain the current KMS count. You can also check the Key Management Service log in the Applications and Services
Logs folder for 12290 events, which records activation requests from KMS clients. Each event displays the name of the computer and the time-stamp of an individual activation request.

  • Packet Loss on Xen and Coherence

We are currently experiencing packet loss issues with Coherence 3.4.2 during the datagram test.
Packet loss statistics are as follows:
    Rx from publisher: /10.96.67.169:9999
    elapsed: 149384ms
    packet size: 1468
    throughput: 66 MB/sec

    received: 7004519 of 8252377
    missing: 1247858
    success rate: 0.848788
    out of order: 0
    avg offset: 0
    gaps: 535018
    avg gap size: 2
    avg gap time: 0ms
avg ack time: -1.0E-6ms; acks 0
The Coherence implementation is running on a Xen VM.
We see this happen for both Fully Virtual and Paravirtualized Guests.
This problem does not happen on physical hardware.
Here is the general sequence that we tried:
    1. After finding the problem on coherence, we tried to simulate similar results on 2 HVM xen systems and we did not find the problem there.
            a. These boxes were HVM guests.
            b. Were running kernel 2.6.18-164 and redhat 5.4
            c. These guests were running on Dom-0 kernel of 2.6.18-164.2.1el5xen
    2. We had 2 para virt machines on the same Dom-0 as above but they were redhat 5.2 so we ran the same test there and still we were running into problem.
    3. We upgraded the para virt machines to redhat 5.4 with latest patch rev and still problem was present.
    4. after this research found out that we need to disabled module ipv6 and that seems to fix the problem. After disabling IPv6 module ran some more tests between pl1rap704-beta and pl1rap706-beta. Results were performance improved but still packet loss.
    5. We converted 2 para virt guests to HVM guests (pl1rap704-beta and pl1rap705-beta) and ran the tests it was still having problem.
    6. Upgrade pl1rap704-beta and pl1rap705-beta to redhat release 5.4 and latest kernel rev and see if the problem is still there
We haven't tried this on Oracle VM, but think that would be the next step to see if the problem persists there, although Oracle support indicates that Coherence is not officially supported on Oracle VM.
We still see the packet loss issues and wonder if anyone has encountered this issue before and has a solution to it?

    Just saw your post.

  • Windows Server 2012 very slow performance executing files

    Hello,
I am running windows server 2012 as dc with 2 clients connected running win7 pro x64, this is a new setup.
Whenever i try to open a large file from the client or an application from the client it takes forever to startup or to load. The performance monitor indicates a maximum workload of 15% at all times.

    Hi,
You could disable SMBv3 on server 2012 to check if the issue related to SMB protocol.
