Server 2012R2 Cluster Storage Error

January 2014 I built 4 servers into a cluster for Hyper-V base VDI using a SAN for central storage. I have had no issues with the running of the setup until recently when the 4th server decided to stop one of the vm host services and VMs became inaccessible.
When I was unable to find a solution I rebuild the server and after finding 50+ updates per server, ran windows update on them all. Ever since these 2 simple actions I have been unable to add the server back into the cluster correctly. The Validation wizard
shows:
Failure issuing call to Persistent Reservation REGISTER AND IGNORE EXISTING on Test Disk 0 from node when the disk has no existing registration. It is expected to succeed. The requested resource is in use.
Test Disk 0 does not provide Persistent Reservations support for the mechanisms used by failover clusters. Some storage devices require specific firmware versions or settings to function properly with failover clusters. Please contact your storage administrator
or storage vendor to check the configuration of the storage to allow it to function properly with failover clusters.
The other 3 nodes are using the storage happily without issues. If I force the node into the cluster, it shows it as mounted and accessible but the moment I try to start a VM on that server, it loses the mount point and reports error 2051: [DCM] failed to
set mount point source path target path error 85.
The only difference between them is the model of the server - the 3 that work are HP ProLiant DL360 G7 and the one that doesn't is a HP ProLiant DL360p G8. They have worked together previously without issues though.
I am at a complete loss as to what to do. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks

Hello the_travisty
The first thing to check in here is that you are using different hardware version for this node than the other nodes, even if at some point they could work together this configuration does not warranty that you are not going to have future issues.
Remember that the base on the Failover Cluster technology is that all the nodes should have the same characteristics since they are working together as only one computer, if the "clusterized" resources
are going to be moved among the nodes they have to work and react as any other node member of the cluster and provide all the elements (hardware/software/firmware/drives) in order to maintain the resource up and running as if they were not moved to other computer
with different configuration.
As per this error:
Please contact your storage administrator or storage
vendor to check the configuration of the storage to allow it to function properly with failover clusters.
This could point to a firmware/driver incompatibility, I think that maybe we have updates missing to be installed in the server or one update installed that have a different version of the system files installed on the nodes due the different version of hardware
is causing this issue. Also you can check with your storage vendor if there is a new release of drivers/firmware for your storage solution compatible with the OS version. This same question goes to your network adapter vendor.
Hope this info hekp you to reach your goal. :D

  • Windows Server 2012R2 Failover Cluster error with mounted volumes

    Hi all,
I've a problem with mounted volume on a WSFC build on top of Windows Server 2012R2, the situation is:
M: is the volume hosting mounting points
    disk-1, disk-2, disk-3 are volume mounted on M:\SomeFolder
Theese volumes are used by a SQL Server Failover Cluster Instance, but my problem is related to WSFC. I've set dependencies so disk-1, disk-2, disk-3 depend upon H:
If I try a failover of the role "SQL Server" I observe that when the disk come online in the other node they fail with this error:
Cluster resource 'disk-1' of type 'Physical Disk' in clustered role 'SQL Server (ISQL2014A)' failed. The error code was '0xaa' ('The requested resource is in use.').
Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster
Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.
If I manually take offline H: and than bring it online and then manually take online all disk (1 to 3) they come online with no error.
    I'm going crazy!

I've found the root of the problem: the servers are virtual machine on a VMware ESX 5.5 infrastructure, VMware claims that on 5.5 multipath is supported for raw device mapping disks but disabling multipath (I've set to fixed path) the Windows Server Failover
    Cluster stops to get problems.
Now we have opened a support call with VMware.

  • Upgrading Hyper-V Server 2008R2 Cluster to 2012R2

I have a Hyper-V Server 2008R2 (free 'core' version) cluster that I would like to upgrade to Hyper-V Server 2012R2 (same 'core' version).  I found
this document that seems to outline the process, however I have the following questions...
Any reason this process won't work on the "core" version of Hyper-V.  i.e. "Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008R2".  I currently have a 2-node 2008R2 HA cluster with "core" servers and am looking to migrate that cluster
to the "core" version of 2012R2.
Is there no way to do this "in place", meaning without a dedicated target server?  It seems like the process assumes you just have extra servers sitting around that can act as targets.  I suppose I could shuffle VMs off one cluster node,
evict that node from my current cluster, rebuild it with 2012R2 core, add it to a new cluster as the only node and carry on with the process outlined here?  Once all VMs are on the new "cluster" of one 2012R2 node, I would destroy the original
cluster, rebuild those machines with 2012R2 and add them as nodes to the new cluster?
Any reason the "Failover Cluster Manager" tool, version 6.1, I've been using to manage my 2008R2 environment won't work to do the migration?  Or are there new 2012 tools I need to have installed on my workstation.  Remember, since this
is the "core" version I can't manage anything from the server.
    Thanks,
    Todd

Here's an update on what happened...
The first VM that failed turned out had 1 snapshot, which I know is a no no, but I generally never snapshot servers so it didn't even occur to me to check.  So that's why the migrated VM wouldn't boot.  When I recreated the VM manually and pointed
to the VHD file it obviously didn't include the AVHD content so it booted the server into a 2 month old state.  That led to the domain problems since the AD server account password had changed sometime in the last 2 months.  I tried a bunch of fixes
but the only thing that finally worked was to remove the server from the domain and re-join.  Of course, that then broke Citrix, but that's getting off-topic.
The second VM that failed was because for some reason a CSV that it relied on was not migrated over and I didn't notice that in that in the report.  And then I couldn't find any way to bring that CSV in after the fact.  I re-ran the pre-migration
and it still didn't show it.  Of course this is my biggest volume at 800GB.  So I then re-mapped one of my old cluster nodes back to the LUN (after removing the new node), brought up the lost CSV, copied the VHD file on it to external media, brought
the old cluster down again, the new one up and was going to blow away that LUN and create it as a new CSV on the new cluster.  Of course, when I went to go create the CSV it showed my LUN available for storage and I just had to add it and all the data
was brought with it.  So 2 hours of copying for nothing!  I'm not at all sure what happened with this problem, but it seems either rebooting the old cluster node or the new one jarred things lose.
Just wanted to report back saying everything is going again.  And also to vent about how poor and riddled with pitfalls this migration is.  The snapshot issue is ridiculous, how hard would it be for the tool to check for that and then throw an
    error in the migration report?
For anyone that needs to upgrade from 2008 to 2012, good luck!

  • Storage Spaces on WS2012R2 Server Essentials drive space error

So, I finally bit the bullet and retired my V1 Home Server in favor of building out a Windows Server 2012R2 Server Essentials box as a replacement. All seemed to go well with the install and so I built out a Storage Space (16 TB) using an external 8-bay
enclosure with about 14 TB of drives in it. The Space built out fine and I then moved my Server Folders to it which also went well.
At that point, I attached my 4 TB external drive that had my movie backups on it and started copying them over. After about a day and a half it is done, or so I thought. It copied over about 3.2 TB of data and now when I try to copy basically anything onto
the Storage Space, I get the following error message:
There is not enough space on <folder name>
xx.x GB is needed to copy this item. Delete or move files so you have enough space.
<folder name> is whatever the target folder name is and xx.x is whatever size the file or files add up to.
This then just has an option to Try Again, Skip or Cancel. Problem is, the drive only has a few TB of data on it and still shows mostly empty, yet I can't copy hardly anything to it. It seems to allow me to copy smaller files individually, but any larger
group of files, or a folder with larger files in it yield the error above.
    Anybody have any ideas?

    Hi,
What is the resiliency type of the virtual disk in the Storage Spaces? How much the free space of the virtual disk? The issue may because the free space of the virtual disk is less than 4 TB.
You could refer to the articles below to know more about the virtual disk size of different resiliency types:

  • [SOLVED] Can't add a node to the cluster with error (Exchange 2010 SP3 DAG Windows Server 2012)

    Hi there!
I have a problem which makes me very angry already :)
I have two servers Exchange 2010 SP3 with MB role started on Windows Server 2012. I decided to create a DAG.
I have created the prestaged AD object for the cluster called msc-co-exc-01c, assigned necessary permissions and disabled it. Allowed through the Windows Firewall traffic between nodes and prepared the File Share Witness server.
Then I have tried to add nodes. The first node has been added successfully, but the second node doesn't want to be added :). Now I can add only one node to the DAG. I tried to add different servers first, but only the first one was added.
    LOGS on the second nodes:

It's confused me, because there is normal connectivity between these DAG members through the main interface.

    Hi Gopi,
Are you trying to add the hosts to your OEM 12c, and then choosing "Deploy Agent"?
Please check this error message about the image file..
The image file C:\oracle\core\12.1.0.2.0\jdk\bin\java.exe is valid, but is for a
machine type other than the current machine.

  • Can I upgrade Server 2012R2 Standard to 2012R2 Datacenter while in a failover cluster?

I would like to know if it is supported to upgrade my Server 2012R2 Standard to 2012R2 Datacenter while in a failover cluster. I have a 3 node cluster all running Server 2012R2 standard with only a few VM's running on them at this time.
    -Jim

Should be no problem. There are no technical differences between Standard and Datacenter. The difference is in the licensing.
I would evict a node, upgrade it, and add it back in.  Rinse and repeat.

  • Windows Server 2012r2 Failover Cluster Event Trace Log files

    Hi
The only documentation I can find regarding event trace log files (Diagnostic.etl.*) for Failover Clustering relate to Server 2008/2008r2, which state that the etl files should be in C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs.
I have been exploring a clustering lab for Server 2012r2 and cannot find these files in that folder.
Strangely the PS cmdlet Get-ClusterLog still works!
    Where are the etl files?
    TIA

    Hi,
Please check if the log is available in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue\.
If not, you can use Get-ClusterLog with the Destination parameter to get the log file.
    Destination
Specifies the location to copy the cluster log(s) to. To copy to the current folder use "-Destination ." for this parameter.

  • Windows Server 2012R2 Fatal Error C0000034 when trying to boot

    Hi.
We patched our Server 2012R2 DC today to fix against CVE-2014-6324 using Windows update. After rebooting, we are now unable to boot and receive the error stated in the title when trying to boot.
Our primary DC however had no issues applying the update and rebooted perfectly fine.
I can only seem to find articles relating to Windows 7 SP1 regarding this error code. Is there a method for recovering this with Server 2012R2?

  • DPM Storage Pool on Windows Server 2012R2 iSCSI target Storage Spaces - supported?

    Hi,
for migration purpose we need more space for one of our DPM 2012R2 Servers.
And we cannot buy more space for our NetAPPs..
So our idea was to use an Windows Server 2012R2 as an iSCSI target and use Storage Spaces.
I remember something that using an iSCSI target on Windows 2008 was not supported.
Is this configuration supported when usinf DPM 2012R2 on Win 2012R2 and the target is Win2012R2 aswell?

    Hi,
    This talks about
Virtual DPM servers, but the same is true for Physical DPM servers when it comes to using .VHD(x) files for DPM storage pool.
Virtual DPM installations do not support the following:
    Windows 2012 Storage Spaces.
Virtual hard drives built on top of storage spaces.
Local or remote hosting of VHDX files on Windows 2012 storage spaces.
Enabling Disk Dedupe on volumes hosting virtual hard drives.
Using synthetic FC to connect to tape drives.
Windows 2012 iSCSI targets (which use virtual hard drives) as a DPM storage pool.
NTFS compression for volumes hosting VHD files used in the DPM storage pool.
Bitlocker on volumes hosting VHD files used for the storage pool.
A native 4K sector size of physical disks for VHDX files in the DPM storage pool.
Virtual hard drives hosted on Windows 2008 servers.
