Server 2012R2 Windows backup 100% CPU usage and no backup

Hello!
I have a problem with two VM´s on a HP Proliant ML350p Gen8, that has Windows Server 2012R2 operating system with Hyper-V role installed.
Both VM´s are also 2012R2, one is DC/DNS/FILE/PRINT and the other one is Exchange 2013.
The problem itself is that, when Windows backup (wbengine.exe - Block level backup engine service) inside VM starts, it uses almost maximum CPU resource, so the VM´s CPUs are 100% used. Backup itself is not working, there is no network trafic. Only
way to get rid of 100% CPU usage is to restart the server.
When i start backup manually (Backup once - scheduled backup options), it is working and the CPU usage is around 20-30%.
One VM (DC/DNS/FILE/PRINT) has 2x vCPU and Exchange has 4x vCPU.
The problem started suddenly, the backup were performing slowly and failed.
Backups are scheduled on different time. Host level Hyper-V backup of VM´s works without any problem.
The backup location is Synology DS414 NAS and the servers are set up using iSCSI, for connecting separate backup lun´s for each server.
The Hyper-V host and both VM´s are patched up-to-date. Ofcourse i have tried a lot of restarts, looking event log, VSSADMIN - cannot find any errors...
The network setup:
Hyper-V host has a team of two physical adapters, that is set up with a external virtual switch (shared with management operating system) and used by the VM`s normal network trafic.
Hyper-V host itself is using separte physcial network card, for connecting with iSCSI to Synology NAS.
I tried to set up another physical network card on the host and create a new virtual swich, add extra virtual nic to VM`s and use this for iSCSI traffic for Windows backup and it didnt make things better.
I need to find a solution, because i cannot restart the server every night for the backups to work.

Hi,
There is a similar thread, please change the performance options in WSB from fast to normal:
wbengine.exe taking all CPU

If the issue still exists, please check if there any error message in the Event Log.
Best Regards,

  • Recently FireFox often has been causing 100% CPU usage and locks up until it finishes the process (various ones). Clearing cookies/cache didn't help. Any ideas?

    Windows 2000 SP4, 1g RAM, Firefox 9.0.1
We keep IE6 and Firefox open simultaneously for 2 different mail accounts. Firefox was always much faster even with 3 or 4 tabs open, but for the past couple of weeks when trying to update a screen the CPU suddenly goes to 100% usage and of course nothing will move until the particular process is finished. Closing one or more tabs does not help. If I close Firefox completely with Task Manager CPU usage goes back down to nil. After restarting Firefox CPU usage may or may not go back up depending upon whether it tries to continue the previous task that was locking it up.
It did not do this with Firefox 3.6 but then again it didn't happen immediately after updating to 9.0.1 either.

100% CPU usage occurred most often toward the end of the working day when busy trying to print on-line postage. We don't have any memory-consuming plugins but according to the knowledge base articles Firefox memory usage can gradually increase during the day even if you do nothing. It seems that may be the problem so we close and restart Firefox more often now as that usually fixes the problem. However, if we get stuck on a particular website update that causes the CPU to to go 100%, we can always start Firefox without previous tabs so the update will stop, or simply use a different browser until we have time to let the computer play games with itself.
So our workaround of restarting Firefox turns out to be the final solution (until we find something better - will post it if we do). Vic

Rundll32.exe Using High CPU on Windows 8.1
I use a Lenovo T440s laptop for my service calls and when I need to do work remotely. My laptop runs Windows 8.1 Professional. I love this laptop and it has proved to be tough as well as extremely fast. I noticed a couple weeks ago that my battery was going dead after about an hour of usage. I also noticed that my cooling fan in the laptop was running louder than normal. I decided to open Task Manger on my laptop to see what the issue was. I soon noticed that a process called rundll32.exe was using around 25 percent of my CPU. I killed the process and everything returned to normal.
A few days later, my battery was going dead very rapidly. My cooling fan was on almost constantly and was blowing warm air. I opened Task Manger and sure enough, rundll32.exe was using 25% of my CPU again. I killed the process and everything was fine. It wasn’t long and my laptop was doing the exact same thing as I described before. I decided it was time to get to the bottom of this issue. Here is how I troubleshot what program was using the rundll32.exe and in the process was killing my battery.
Step One: I downloaded Process Explorer. This is an excellent tool. It is similar to Task Manager but goes into way more depth on the processes and dlls that are running. I extracted the download and then ran Process Explorer as an administrator.
Step Two: One of the first things I noticed was rundll32.exe was using 23 percent of my CPU again.
I right-clicked on the rundll32.exe process and selected properties. I clicked on the Image tab and at once saw the culprit. A utility to monitor and gauge my battery usage, called PwrMgrBkGndMonitor, was draining my battery instead of saving it.
Step Three: After a little digging around in my installed programs I located a program called Lenovo Settings Dependency Package. PwrMgrBkGndMonitor was installed in the Lenovo Settings Dependency Package.
I didn’t use this program and decided I didn’t need it. I uninstalled the program and restarted my laptop. I haven’t had a problem with the rundll32.exe using up my CPU since I uninstalled Lenovo Settings Dependency Package.
If you are experiencing the same symptoms has stated above and you are running a Lenovo laptop with Windows 8.1, this may be your issue. However, before you uninstall the program I would recommend using Process Explorer. Process Explorer will help you determine the exact program that is giving you issues before blindly uninstalling and killing services. I hope my troubleshooting steps can help you find program is making rundll32.exe use high CPU usage. Let me know in the comments if this helped you!

  • 100% CPU usage and sound stutter

So for the last couple of days, I've been having a lot of problems watching anything that uses flash (youtube, twitch, shush.se....)
When i enter full screen(mostly but a bit even in normal mode) i get a lot of sound stuttering and some video slowdown, also the flash application uses 100% CPU sources.
    I'm using:
    Win7 64-bit with SP1 (also happened on 32-bit before I formatted)
AMD Phenom II x3 710 processor
    Radeon 4870 HD
FF 37.0.1 with Shockwave Flash 17.0.0.137 plugin.
It happens with or without hardware acceleration in the browser, and no hard acceleration on flash itself, if i turn that on all i get is a green screen.
My graphics drivers are fully updated, i have AMD catalyst suit version 13.9
Please help, I'm at the end of my wits

Sorry, didn't catch that this had just spontaneously changed.  You're still going to get way better performance if we can get your GPU working, but *something* has clearly changed.  I also confirmed that I'm only seeing about 10% CPU when playing video back on Twitch on my Win7 x64 machine.
We haven't shipped a build in about a month, so it's unlikely that it's something that we changed recently unless this correlated directly with a manually update of Flash.  It might be a regression in the browser (FF 37.0.1 shipped on March 31st), but I'm not seeing a wave of Firefox-related complaints on this front.
The usual suspects for stuff like this would be a new antivirus package or other third-party application (software firewall, "Internet Security" package, etc).  If the change didn't correlate to software that you installed or updated, it hints at some underlying problem.  It's possible that the machine is hitting some filesystem corruption and freaking out, or there's malware in play.
    Checking the disk for errors:
    http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2641432
Caveat: Sometimes corrupted software is an early indicator that your disk is going bad.  It's wise to ensure that you have current working backups, especially if you have anything important on the machine.  Checking the disk for problems is a relatively safe operation, but will also give the disk a workout.  If it's on it's way out, you may not get a lot of additional warning.
Once you've done that, blow away all of Flash Player's data by going to Control Panel > Flash Player > Advanced > Delete All, then restart your browser.
In terms of malware, http://www.malwarebytes.org is free and well-respected, and any of the major anti-virus products should give you some decent degree of confidence.

  • YEARS-old issue with slow play, 100% cpu usage, and conspiracy theories

I've had the same issue for YEARS now, with flash videos (like on youtube) and games starting out okay, but after a little while, they just start to stutter and slow way down, while the CPU usage goes up to ridiculous levels. The browser doesn't matter, firefox or chrome, online content or run off the local hard drive. I have the latest flash player, and this has been a problem ever since at least version 9. I'm using XP. I think version 8 never had this issue, but unfortunately all recent games and youtube videos won't run with version 8. Adobe did something with recent versions of flash player that causes this issue now. Google search and you'll see countless threads from people with all kinds of computers with all kinds of specs having the exact same issue.
There has never been an entry in the Adobe knowledgebase about it, despite the persistence of this problem.
It's like it's a coverup or something. The more I think about it, the more it reminds me about when the Netscape browser was caught secretly uploading information to their servers and resulting in browser slowdowns. Is flash player doing the same thing? Adobe has already been caught out with spyware-like activities with Photoshop connecting to Omniture through the flash-enabled splash screens that were purposely disguised to look like they were innocently connecting to a user's local system, but in fact connecting to stat and online marketing sites. Is this why this years-old problem has never been addressed in any official way? Now I'm just rambling. I want a fix. It's been years now that I haven't been able to enjoy more than a few minutes worth of flash content.
At this point, even if Adobe shrugged their shoulders and said "yeah, we know about the problem but we have no idea how to fix it" would be better than nothing at all.

  • K7N420 100% cpu usage

Apologies in advance for a long post but I'm stretched beyond my technical abilities to solve this thing. I was running a virus scan a week ago (no issues, it had just been a long time since I ran one) and while I was away the machine restarted itself when it shouldn't have. It was waiting at the redhat login (dual boot XP and redhat) when it should have been waiting to tell me the scan was done in XP. It never booted properly again. The HD reported fatal unrecoverable errors. I bit the bullet and replaced the drive with a Maxtor 80G 7200rpm drive and loaded XP Pro with no issues. Loaded Norton, updated it twice and proceeded for Windows updates. No issues, device manager has no conflicts. HOWEVER, the machine is running no apps (they aren't even installed!) and taskmanager reports 100% cpu usage and no processes running except system idle which jumps from 97 to 99% repeatedly. Somehow I managed to revive the original drive (wrote zeroes to it and ran scandisk several times and it reports no errors now) and tried it with the same problem. I've gone so far as to install 98se (yuck) on the original WD drive and it is using about 28% cpu, again with virtually nothing installed. I ran stinger off a floppy as well as Norton several times so the drives and MBR would appear to be clean. The RAM is appearing properly on both OS's and always no applications running and no processes showing as using anything. I'm stumped.
    Any advice is welcome.

GlennVidia, first thanks for helping this dumbass out. I ran the memtest overnight with no issues. I just reinstalled XP on the new Maxtor drive. I am using the 2.03 drivers. I just installed PCAlert and it shows the following voltages: Vcore: 1.74, 3.3 is at 3.34, 5 is at 5.03 and 12 is at 12.18 with a cpu temp of 118F. I have installed no other apps including anti-virus. The cpu usage is bouncing between 44% and 65% cycling every second...you can set a clock to it. (Hopefully that triggers someone's memory?) No processes showing as using resources in task manager besides system idle and an occasional hit for task manager itself. Device manager has no issues. I changed the ide cable and reseated all cables to and from the mobo.
You mention usb...I'm not using any usb devices but will gladly kill it in DM if that is what you are suggesting for a test run.

  • Crystalras.exe consuming 100% CPU usage

    Hi everyone,
When we try to open an instance of one of our Crystal reports from InfoView, the crystalras.exe process runs at 100% CPU usage and the report never shows up. After a few minutes, we get the following message:
The request timed out because there has been no reply from the server for 600,000 milliseconds.
Does anyone know where the problem could come from? Could this be because the report is retrieving too much data?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Dear Both,
I traced the RAS server as suggested by Tim and obtained a log that - I have to admit - is quite difficult for me to understand. Could I send it to one of you for examination? Thanks in advance.
Ted, please find below my answers to your questions:
Just to close out possible data source issues, are the reports going against Business Views or Universes?
The report is based on Business Views.
Do you have Processing Extensions specified for the reports?
Sorry but what are Processing Extensions?
Also, when you checked in the Crystal Reports Designer, was it Designer installed on the same machine where the page server and RAS server is running?
Yes, it is installed on the same machine.
Also, since it affects both Page Server and RAS, it may require CRPE traces to get to the bottom of this (CRPE - 'creepy' - is the CR engine used by both the Page and RAS server).
I will certainly open a case with SAP to have them help me on that.
Thank you both for your help. It is very appreciated.

  • How to monitor CPU usage and performance on a Hyper-V server with several VM's

I have a server that is running Windows 2008 64 bit Hyper-V, with 8 gigs of RAM and Intel Xeon X3440 @ 2.53 Ghz, which gives me 8 logical cores in the performance monitor on the host system.
I have set up three Virtual Machines, all running Windows 2008 32 bit.
    Build server, running Team City
    Staging server
SQL Server, running SQL Server 2005
I have some troubles with the setup in that the host monitor remains responsive at all times, even though the VM's are seemingly working at 100% cpu and are very sluggish and unresponsive. (I have asked a separate question about that.)
So the question here is: What is the best way to monitor how the physical CPU's are actually utilized? The reason I am asking is that I am being told that i cannot reliably use the task manager to monitor CPU usage in a VM.

First, you have to remember that in Hyper-V that the "host" is called a parent partition and it really just like a virtualized guest with special permissions and roles. Just like any other child/guest, when you open up Task Manager, you can not see the CPU
usage of the other children on the server.
Ben Armstrong has a good explanation of this here:http://blogs.msdn.com/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2008/02/28/hyper-v-virtual-machine-cpu-usage-and-task-manager.aspx
To summarize his post, you need to check three things to get an accurate picture of CPU utilization:
View the CPU usage on each guest - this is available through Hyper-V Manager or Performance Monitor.
CPU usage due to context switching - this is the perfmon counter called % Hypervisor Run Timeunder Hyper-V Hypervisor Virtual Processor
Child partition worker process - vmwp.exe running on the parent partition (1 per child). This handles Hyper-V operations like saving
    state.

  • Problem:100 % cpu usage with tcp server dll

    Hello,
I am trying to write a dll with labwindows/cvi that allows me to create a TCP Server. This dll is integrated in labview.I created this Dll with example provides by Labwindows/cvi(rtserver.dll).
Description of my problem: when i execute this dll in a "While Loop" in labview, the TCp server wait a connection and 100% cpu usage occurs. However when a client is connect to the server, the CPU is normaly used because the program stop when he meets the timeout of the tcpread() function. I would like to know how i could limit CPU usage  when the server is awaiting a client in the labview "While loop".
I know I could use a DELAY() to limit Cpu usage ,but I would like to know if there are any others solutions.
    thank you.

i dont know your exact application, but i generally use Q to transfer data to TCP loop in my prgram it helps me in two ways.
    1. it automatically restricts the iteration when ther is no data (Less CPU Usage, Less Unnecessary Trafic)
    2. Q can eliminate problems arising due to non synchronization of loop

  • Distiller 8 and 9 both locking up, 100 % CPU usage

Not sure if its related, but probably, since it happened right after...I just transferred everything from my quad core mac pro to my new 8-core Mac Pro. Everything went well, but now Distiller 8 starts and then sits and gives the beachball of death, and one of the cores shows 100% cpu usage. (I have that utility that shows memory used, CPU usage, etc.). I hadn't bought Acrobat 9 yet so I downloaded it and installed, and Distiller 9 does the EXACT same thing. The ONLY thing I can call an "error message" is that I can see in the window after it launches is "Error in /Library/Application Support/Adobe PDF/Settings/PDFX4 2007.joboptions:/CheckCompliance out of Range."
That message may have been there whole time, even when it worked, though. I don't know. At any rate, I need distiller working! Any ideas?

Glad to hear all is well. Preference files can cause big problems. Eons
ago, in the 1980s, I used a communications program called Red Ryder. I
loved the program. After it was updated to a new version (it might have
been called White Knight by that time), I started to have terrible
problems. I wrote to their technical support. They couldn't duplicate
the problem. It couldn't happen etc. I eventually got a little hot under
the collar. After all, if I couldn't use my modem, I couldn't check my
email, etc. It turned out to be a problem with my preference file when
converted to the latest version, that was causing the problem. Since
they always started with a new preference file, they couldn't duplicate
the problem that was obvious to me.

  • SQL query against ConfigMgr DB causing 100% cpu usage on SQL server throughout day

Hi, I am hoping someone here may have an idea of what I can do to resolve this as I am not much of a SQL guy. Here is what I know. Throughout the day, monday-friday, my ConfigMgr SQL server sits at 98-100% processor usage.
Using the following query I have narrowed down the culprit of the high cpu usage throughout the day:
    SELECT p.spid, p.status, p.hostname, p.loginame, p.cpu, r.start_time, r.command,
    p.program_name, text
    FROM sys.dm_exec_requests AS r,
    master.dbo.sysprocesses AS p
    CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_sql_text(p.sql_handle)
WHERE p.status NOT IN ('sleeping', 'background')
    AND r.session_id = p.spid
Even though my knowledge of SQL is light, I believe the following output clearly defines the thread responsible for the high cpu usage. This "program_name" is present throughout the day and as long as its there, cpu usage remains at or near 100%:
The text output of the above culprit is as follows (sorry this is long):

Normally, this summary job every few mins which only summarize last few mins sending history. If the job was not running for long time, the first time, this sproc will summarize a lot more data than normal. So it could fail which will make things worse and
    worse over time.
If sending summary data is not a big concern here, you can manually insert a dummy row with most recent time as Summarizationtime, so that, when summary job kicks in next time, it will only summary short interval data.
DrsSendHistory is that the table records every sending on every group. This table is one of the key of replication logic. For your environment, on primary site, it could have up to 24(hrs) * 60 (mins) / 2 (sync interval) * 36(secondary sites) records per
    day for Secondary_Site_Replication_Configuration group and 24 * 60 / 5 * 22 records for Secondary Site Data.

    Hi Umair,
Thank you for the reply. My plan was to go ahead with your suggestions but what I tried first was to get my VM guy to give the SQL server access to more CPU resources. We had already configured it with what would have seemed to be plenty, as per Microsoft's
sizing requirements, but I figured it couldn't hurt to rule out - he gave the SQL server access to a huge portion of the host processing power and since then CPU usage on the server has NOT been an issue.
It would appear that the large amounts of secondary sites we have just simply put a lot of stress on the SQL server with out of the box replication settings. Since the entire VM host is for System Center only, and our other System Center servers are using
very little resources, this solution has ended up being valid.
Thanks again for everyone's help with this.

  • Music store & 100% CPU usage

I've had this problem on my newly built computer, and my older machine. When I browse the iTunes music store, the status bar on the top will often move like it's opening the music store, but it'll do this for a long period of time (several minutes) and iTunes will work, but the music store will not load, and you cannot click the 'X' to stop the contacting of the music store. During this time if you open task manager, iTunes uses 100% of CPU resources. If you close iTunes it still uses 100%. you have to end the process in task manager in order to make it stop. On occasion the music store will work to view maybe one album, but if you search for another album, or click another link it'll do the whole not-responding-100% CPU usage cycle again.
All drivers are up to date and like I said it's done this on two seperate computers of mine on the same iTunes account. I also have a laptop and the music store works completely fine on it. It's only on my desktops that I have this issue.
Some specs on my machine if this will help
    Asus motherboard
    AMD Athlon XP 4000+ processor
2gb Kingston 184 pin DDR ram
Seagate SATA II 160 GB HD
Windows XP PRO service pack 2
    thanks for your help!

I'm only guessing here, but perhaps iTunes is having a conflict with another application. If you are anything like me you probably install your favourite applications on all your computers. As a shortcut to troubleshooting, perhaps consider an application you have installed on the desktops, but NOT on the laptop. Then try uninstalling that application from your desktop computer and test iTunes.

  • 100% CPU usage by iCal

For some reason my iCal application uses 100% of CPU. What can I do to avoid it?

I had a similar problem with iTunes.
Here's the link to what fixed my problem immediately.  Please note: my problem was resolved following just the three steps pasted below.  The original link has additional steps that may be necessary, although I did not employ them, and my problem of 100% CPU USAGE is gone!!!  Thank God!

  • [10.1.2] Protected Mode causing 100% CPU Usage/Extra Processes on Win XP 32-bit?

    Hello,
I'm not 100% sure if the two are related, but I have a client who was seeing 100% CPU usage using Adobe Acrobat Reader X 10.1.2 on Windows XP 32-bit and Firefox 11. The acrord32.exe process would hang around after closing the main window and eventually leading to tons of processes and his CPU at 100% use. I believe disabling Protected Mode may have solved this issue. I didn't see it documented anywhere so I figure I'd post about it here and see if anyone else was seeing this resolved as well.

I noticed 'only' 50 % CPU usage. Not during Reader usage with ~ 20 %, but it started after closing main window.
Two instances of acrord32.exe were created - the moment pdf was opened - of which one was using zero CPU.
After opening another pdf, 2 more processes were created, so 4 in total. Have seen 2 of them using 100 %.
    Issue is easily recreated.
This is all in 10.1.3, no fix from Adobe, only THE fix from you: turning of Protected Mode!
After which now only one proces is created, with 1 to 3 pdf documents opened at same time.
This instance is then nicely shutdown after the last pfd is closed.

  • Shockwave Flash 11.6.602.168 100% CPU usage

    Hi,
Our computer has 100% CPU usage every time we get in websites that utilize Flash, or watch youtube.
    Browser: FF 19.0
    Flash 11.6.602.168
Computer: HP Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz, 3G memory, up-to-date BIOS and other drivers.
    Graphic card: EVGA GeFprce 6200
    Windows 7 32 bits
This window is freshly installed, has AVG on. We do not have many software's installed, except MS Office. All fans and CPU are clean. The computer runs fairly fast: we tried opening multiple FF tabs simultaneously, plus Excel, Word, Solitaire etc. without any problems. However, whenever we get into websites with Flash, the CPU uasage goes to 100% and stays there. Memory usage has always been stable, around 30%. We have tried the following steps, but it hasn't gotten better:
    - Turned off all applications, opened only one tab with that website.
    - Updated all drivers and applications: FF, Flash, Graphic card etc.
    - Turned ON and OFF hardware acceleration for both Flash and FF, also tried to turn one On, the other OFF, and vise versa.
    - Disabled all add-on's, extensions and Plug-in's, except Flash.
    - Uninstalled and reinstall FF and Flash; restarted several times.
    - Temporarily turned OFF protected mode.
    - Uninstalled FF, Flash, then installed IE 9, then Flash for IE: didn't work.
    - Uninstalled IE 9, Flash, then installed IE10 then reinstalled Flash for IE: also didn't work.
    - We do not keep browsing history.
Examples of websites that we have had problems with: pbskids.org, barbie.com, and other school websites for kids to do homework or watch youtube.
While in many websites such as CNN.com, yahoo.com, when we opened it, the CPU usage did spike, but came back to 1-5% within 5 seconds.
This computer is for our kids. Do we really need to buy an i5 or i7 computer so the kids can play and do homework? Or is there any other way that we can do?
    Thank you

Moving to the Using Flash Player forum, as this isn't specific to the Beta.
In the Youtube video, if you right-click and choose Show Video Info, it will show you whether you're using Hardware Acceleration for both Video Rendering and Video Decoding.
If you're seeing Software Rendering and/or Software Decoding and you're watching a high-def video, it's going to use a ton of CPU.
Do you see similar behavior in other browsers?  (Chrome, IE)  The Flash Player distributions are actually quite different for each browser.  It would be an interesting data point.
