Server Admin - File Sharing - Show "invisibles"

Leopard Server, v10.5.7 - Server Admin, File Sharing: Would like to be able to see system directories (such as /var, /bin, /private) in the Volumes::Browse window. I find it odd that "mach_kernel.ctfsys" =is= visible but other system files and folders are not. Is there any way to increase the verbosity of the Volumes::Browse window?
Thank you in advance.

Thank you for your reply.
We were toying with the idea of giving a few admins remote access to /etc/ and/or /dev/ without them having to access via ssh. Not a very big deal.

  • Server Admin. file sharing lion client to Snow leopard server

I'm running Lion on my client Mac and my Server is Snow leopard 10.6.8.  I have to use Server Admin 10.7 on Lion but there is no "File Sharing" tab to set up or edit the file sharing options on my 10.6 server?.  I understand this is correct for Lion Server, but how do I get round it for Snow leopard Server??  On the Apple website compatibility page (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1822) it states:
    "Mac OS X Server v10.6
To administer a Mac OS X Server v10.6-based server, you can use the Server Admin Tools 10.6 on a Mac OS X v10.6 (client) computer. You should match the version numbers of the server, tools, and admin workstation as closely as possible; for example, use Server Admin Tools version 10.6.8 on Mac OS X v10.6.8 to administer Mac OS X Server v10.6.8. You may also use the Server Admin Tools 10.7 on an OS X Lion computer to administer Mac OS X Server v10.6."
So, How do I administer file sharing???

To configure File Sharing on a 10.6 server using 10.7 Server Admin, click the service (AFP, SMB, NFS, etc.) then click the Share Points tab.

  • Server Admin doesn't show Print Queue status

When I look at my print queues (all 17) under Server Admin, it shows queue name, # of jobs, shared via (IPP & SMB), and printer kind (HP LJ 1022n and HP LJ P2015). It has a column for status, but this is always 100% empty/blank. Also, if I go to the Jobs tab, then I can pick "Jobs on Queue" for all the queues, but the line below for "Queue Status" is again always blank.
Is there something I can do to get this info to show up in Server Admin? I know that CUPS knows the printer status, as I can go to localhost:631 and see the status in the Printers list and the Jobs list.
It isn't life threatening. It is just annoying to have to go to the web page when Server Admin -almost- gets me everything I need to diagnose a teacher's printing problem remotely.

    Hi Keith
You could always consult the Print Service logs. If you set the logging levels to Debug or Debug2 you should get everything. You have to be a bit careful with this as the log can get quite large. Other than that I don’t know of anything that is available out of the box.
There may be others that can suggest a 3rd party solution that gives you the appropriate feedback you are looking for. Opening port 631 should not be that much of risk I would have thought?

  • Server Admin iCal Overview shows info as "Not Available"

Next to each topic (Accounts, Calendars, Groups, Locations, Resources, Events & Todo Lists) Server Admin displays "Not Available". The iCal server is running and users are interacting with it OK. The disk usage is 0.0B, there are about 10,000 events.
Since this happened there have been problems accessing calendars via the web (hardly used so not sure what others are seeing).
I've checked & fixed the POSIX permissions for the /Library/CalendarServer hierarchy. I tried deleting the .db.sqlite files & letting iCal repopulate them.
All the settings are intact and haven't changed. The logs show no culprit entries, just the usual. /etc/caldavd/caldavd.plist does not appear to be corrupted.
    Ideas?

A hard drive started having RAID errors around 5/1, so the server is being rebuilt from scratch.
I'm still curious if anyone knows the how & why of this issue.

  • Is it faster to download files from a remote server or file sharing with Back To My Mac?

I am trying to send somebody a 6GB file using Back To My Mac. I had them set up my Apple ID in iCloud in System Preferences on their Mac and check the box for Back to My Mac. Went into Sharing preferences to check the boxes for File Sharing and Screen Sharing.
From my Mac I then went to that shared computer in the Finder, copied over my file but it's showing that it will take 27hrs to transfer.
Is this normal? And if so would setting up a server for remote access be better for transferring such large files?
Any other mind blowing ideas would be most welcome for remote large file tranfer.

Download history usually will have the link back to the original source location. Assuming that still exists, it's worth a try. When you right-click (Ctrl+click) an item, the small context menu should let you copy the URL of the original source, which you then can paste into the address bar to fetch it again. If the original download required you to be logged in to the source site, you should log in again first to increase your odds of getting the download.

  • Server Admin Doesn't show info for Software Update Service

In server admin, under the settings and available updates, I see a list of available updates, but they are labelled with the hash code for the update, not the name, and the info panel doesn't show any information like it should. We have our corporate firewall configured to allow connections to the server apple uses for this service so that we can get the updates. Any suggestions?

That option is only available after upgrading to iOS 5. It appears you have a 2nd generation unit, which can not be upgraded beyond iOS 4.2.1.

  • Server FTP File Sharing

How do I activate the VPN, FTP, and File Sharing on my server? Also, is there a way to access my server from another machine without using my IP address without port forwarding and/or registering an internet host name? Also, I have another post on how to use VPN on server, found here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/22026213#22026213
Please answer to both of these posts, I really want to make this server thing work.

Do you know how to connect to my server without knowing the IP of the host and without registering for a internet domain name or port forwarding?
This is absolutely not possible.  To connect to a remote server, somebody somewhere has to enter the identity of the target server among the billions of net-connected devices.
Now can that information be loaded into a client device, and can an end-user avoid having to know about these and other details of networking?  Sure.  What's variously called "provisioning" is a common approach used here.
There are other approaches available which can be useful on different and often on smaller networks, such as what Apple calls Bonjour; variously known as multicast DNS services and service discovery.
    There are other potential solutions.
Also, does anyone know how to specially protect a folder in File Sharing?
Sure.  Usually with what's called a file mode or protection mask, or via access control lists.
Whether the protections are effective depends greatly on who you're protecting against, and how the files are being shared.
My server at school only allows certain users to access certain folders, but when I connect to my server I have the same username so I don't need to enter any kind of log in.
Why not ask the folks that run the server for information?  You are affiliated with a school, and the purpose of such institutions is to learn, after all.  Ask some questions of the folks that are running the configuration you're familiar with.
If it's a typical educational configuration, there'll be a "directory" — Microsoft Active Directory is common, though there are others — containing information mapping your identity to what you're authorized to access or do, as well as a variety of other information such as your identity and your email address and which mail server you're using for accessing your mail.
Can you password protect the folder?
Directly?  Not really.  Details here depend greatly on the operating system and file system involved, and on how the files are being served, and how the files will be accessed.   File-level encryption can be used, and web servers can protect folders, and various operating systems including OS X support what are called encrypted disk images.  Web content management systems can also provide access controls, too.
Rather than continuing this blizzard of questions, please consider providing us with some background on the problem you're looking to solve here, and some of the general requirements.  There can be many potential solutions, and even more wrong solutions.  With some idea of what you're looking to do, we might be able to give you something more specific to look into.
As for learning more about OS X and OS X Server and server networking — all of which can provide some background and can introduce a number of these general topic areas — see the OS X Server documentation, and — for yet more detailed information — see the 10.6 server documentation that's linked from there.  The older 10.6 OS X Server documentation was much more detailed.

  • Server Admin is not showing all users in "Show Users

I've discovered that a previous upgrade from Tiger to Leopard in 2009 has lead to newer users not be displayed Server Admin 'Show Users and Groups'.  New groups display fine.
We upgraded again to Snow Leopard a couple of months back and so are running the latest admin tools.
I really can't pick why these accounts aren't showing so any points would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

After numerous reinstalls failed to solve this problem, I discovered that on my system, it has to do with using an external monitor (via DVI port). When I drag the Firefox window from my laptop screen to an external monitor, "Show All Bookmarks" is suddenly empty. Dragging the browser window back to the original display (laptop) does NOT fix it. Firefox must be RESTARTED on the original display. When Firefox re-opens, "Show All Bookmarks" functions normally again.
WORK AROUND: the only way I can view "Show All Bookmarks" on my external monitor is to first open both the browser and "Show All Bookmarks" windows on the original display, drag BOTH windows to the other monitor and be sure to leave the "Show All Bookmarks" library window open in the background. If I forget and close it by accident, the problem happens all over again.

  • IPad: App File Sharing shows no documents?

    Dear colleagues,
when I connect my iPad to iTunes for Windows and do switch to the Apps form, and click onto an App in the File Sharing area, its documents show up correctly in the right pane.
But clicking onto other several apps (e.g. 4 to 5 different Apps) the documents area no longer works and does not show any entries. Also for Apps which showed correctly before now leaves blank.
The only solution I found is to disconnect and reconnect my iPad and restart iTunes to show File Sharing documents for 4 to 5 Apps before it disappears again.
    Do you have any idea?
    Thank you in advance.
    Regards, Thomas

With iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC. Then select the iPad on that left-hand sidebar, and on the right-hand side of iTunes select the Apps tab and scroll down it, and you should see the file sharing section - select that app on the left-hand side of that section

  • Home server access & file sharing

    Hey All,
I am running a NAS called OpenMediaVault http://www.openmediavault.org/ on a PC at home which has a harddrive connected and this is where I store all my client files, fonts, photos, etc (I'm a Graphic Designer). My work computer is a Macbook Pro with Lion (not Lion Server). Basically I connect to my NAS in the Finder that shows up under "Shared" devices in the Sidebar and I retrieve and store files to/from my NAS like it was a HDD connected to my MBP.
What I would like to do is be able to access my current files, while being able to add new files to my home NAS from anywhere that has an internet connection. I am the 'admin' of my server so i have access to the IP (static) and port number, username/password etc. Any NAS configuration is all done through a webGUI. I just don't know how, or if I need any software to set it up to be able to do this.
I'm not looking to screen share because I only have one Mac. I want the work flow to be the same like it is at home = Open Finder > Click on my NAS server in the Sidebar > Login as neccessary > Get see files.
Thanks to whomever helps with any solution as I am a total noob at this stuff .

The problem you face is that the NAS is the "wrong" side of your router and the security (NAT) of the router means that you can't "see" inside your network from outside. You'll need to set up port forwarding on your router so that external requests get to your NAS.
If you search here you should get some advice but it will depend on your exact router model. Also OpenMediaVault forums may have some advice.
A much messier solution may be to remotly connect to a computer thats inside your filerwall and run it from there but that's probably too much of a pain and not what you want!
    Regards,
    Shawn

  • Server socket FILE SHARING

    Hi All,
is it possible to use serverSocket to send an mp3 from my ip to another persons ip. I imagine you need to have a server on your ip for their client to connect to, but can serverSocket even handle rich media like mp3s and .movs?? Cheers

Sure it is possible. Media files are still just files: a sequence of bytes. You'll need to write a client and a server. Google for java socket tutorial to get started.
...or use an existing application. Like email, ftp, scp, ...

  • Home server for file sharing without SSL certificates?

    Hi,
I am wanting to use this server to set up a home network...
Mainly I just want to share document, video and music files from my iMac with multiple iOS devices and PCs in the house.
Can I use this server to set up such a network without purchasing SSL certificates and such?
    Thank you for your help!
    Tiffany

Sharing with iOS devices without SSL is - if I recall correctly - problematic, but you can have an SSL certificate without purchasing. Just open Keychain Access, click the Keychain Access menu item in the top of the screen and choose one of the options in the Certificate Assistant drop down menu.

  • Server Admin - yellow vs green thermometers?

In server admin -> file sharing I have three disks (two internal and one external). The two internal disk have green thermometers under "disk space", while the external disk shows a yellow thermometer. All HFS. And I running server admin from a macbook off site.
    Anyone know what this means

Yellow on a "disk space" meter would indicate it's getting slightly low on, well, disk space. Red would be critical, so you're probably okay for now. Might want to check out your large file culprits, though.

  • File sharing in the File server preference pane

System preferences to File Server to File sharing. When I choose a share point folder and want to change permissions, I click the radio button to restrict access to certain users and save. When I re-enter the the folder it defaults back to let everybody have access. If I try to delete the folder it won't delete. When I create a new folder by re-choosing the folder, I get <folder Name>1 and then I cannot delete it. Is there a plist in preferences I can delete to clear this problem?

    Hello Peter,
    Thanks for your answer.
There must be something wrong in the different steps I follow.
Firts I set Time machine on the server for each user, shoosing the Volume "SmartStor" (a network volume attached on the Mac Mini server) it creates a "Shared items" folder with a "Backups" folder in.
In Server Admin tools I can see in the AFP services the share point /Backups
In Workgroup Manager I set the Time Machine's preferences for the different computers and computers' group with the path afp://myserver.local/Backups/
At least on my client's computer I can shoose the volume "Backups" "on my server".
And it doesn't work... even with all the logins and password, User's, Dir Admin and Server Admin.
With User's and Dir Admin it runs quickly and tells "the volume is not reachable on account of wrong user's name or password"
With Server Admin login and password it runs indefinitly, nothing occurs ...
Is there something to do in terminal ?
Well I tried to find explanations on the web but I found nothing for the moment... The informations are to set a network volume in Terminal in place of the default one...
'Hope to find soon, I can't stand that something runs for every one but not with me...
