Server Admin now non-responsive/VERY sluggish

Server Admin 10.6 has become unresponsive or very sluggish at best. SA shows up in Activity Monitor as "unresponsive", then eventually loads the proper data from the server. Any change of window in Server Admin generates the same response.
The server (a G5) is running OS X 10.5.8 (v1.1). The admin pc (a 24" iMac) is running OS X 10.6.
I have tried the following:
1. Re-booted both the server and the admin iMac.
2. Re-installing Server Admin 10.6.
3. Updating the OS on the server to the 8/31/09 update v1.1 to OS X Server 10.5.8.
Still have the same lack of response. It takes about 30 seconds for the window in SA to change or refresh.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

More information:
When I open the Server Monitor app and try to access the server, I get the following messages in the Status Summary window:
"software is not installed properly on server" alternating with "CANNOTLOAD_BUNDLEERR".
I've never seen these messages before.
BTW, when I use ARD and open Server Admin on the server itself, I get the normal response and window refresh. However, when I open the Server Monitor app on the server, I get the same error messages as above.

  • Server 2008 becomes non-responsive intermittently

    Hi,
    I have a virtual server which becomes non-responsive intermittently. The mstsc command will not give the login window and will push me back to the mstsc login screen ( where we enter the hostname we want to remote into ). If I try to login from Vmware console;
after entering the credentials and hit enter, it will push me back to the login screen again. Then I will be left with one option, which is reset it from console.
Can someone help me here to solve it? Why its happening and what is the resolution ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Noufal

    Hi
are there any errors in the event log when this happens? Is this server a domain controller?
When it doesnt respond are you still able to ping the server?
Hope this helps. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.
Yes, see if you can ping both IP and Host name at this point. I have seen this happen in a non domain environment.

  • HT1822 Mac OS X server admin tools: non-server editions of Mac OS 10.6?

On my iMac, I am running the installation of OS X that it shipped with + updates up to 10.6.8.  I know there are server admin tools available on the Apple support website, that do stuff like manage groups.  I am looking for a GUI to look at ALL the users, groups, permissions, etc. (including hidden ones like _www for apache) on my system, without having to dig through config files in /etc and/or use the dscl command line utility.
The referenced article says I can find the 10.6 tools on Apple support downloads:
    Mac OS X Server v10.6
To administer Mac OS X Server v10.6, use the Server Admin Tools 10.6 on Mac OS X v10.6. You should match the version numbers of the server, tools, and admin workstation as closely as possible; for example, use Server Admin Tools version 10.6.8 on Mac OS X v10.6.8 to administer Mac OS X Server v10.6.8.
    My questions are:
    1.  Where are the 10.6 tools on the apple support website?  A search turns up versions for everything BUT 10.6.
    2.  Will the 10.6 tools work on 10.6.8 that is not a server edition of Mac OS?

The Server Tools you can download from Apple will install and run on OS X client, but they will only connect to and monitor OS X Server boxes.
So that won't get you where you want.
One command that will help you here - and which is present on OS X Server and OS X client - is dscl.
    dscl . list /users
    For details:
    info dscl
    or
    man dscl
    Or a web search, etc...

  • Server Admin 10.6.5 running very slowly

    Hi All,
    New strange thing!
Server Admin has started running very slowly. If I run SA on each of my 3 servers it runs fine quick as a bell. If I run it on a client machine crawls to snails pace, sometimes have to force quite.
Done the usual things deleted plist, re-install et-al. I tried on a fresh iMac install, ran fine for five mins then crapped out!
Any ideas on where to start looking, or is anyone else having a similar problem?
    Ta!

    Hi All,
Thanks for your comments so far, i had also suspected DNS. However with my limited knowledge DNS seems to be working okay.
Big thanks to Mr Hoffman, I hope DNS is working as I followed your instructions to set it up! While i am at it, I must say a big "thank you" to you for your website. An excellent resource that is really well written and helped me an awful lot. My thanks.
So in response here are the response to the digs, I can't see anything there but I am less experienced.

  • Mail, Server Admin, MySQL running very, very slow

    Hi all,
I have this Leopard Server on a Mac Mini and I experience some big bottlenecks on mail services (especially webmail), Server Admin connections (both local and remote), and also connections with mySQL clients (remote). Local MySQL is working fine. It is not the same for mail and Server Admin. They are very slow also for local connections. Any idea? Hint: I'm using a USB-ethernet adapter (from Apple) for my public IP's (I have 2 of them) and I use built-in ethernet for local network. I've switched them, I tried only with the built-in ethernet... no change. Please help... my enthusiasm about this server solution is getting lower and lower... Thank you very much

    pterobyte wrote:
Have a look at system.log and mailaccess.log for clues to begin with.
Server Admin is usually slow (locally and remotely) when the DNS (forward and reverse) setup is not correct.
Since mySQL seems to have only problems when used remotely, I'd look at bandwidth, routers and switches involved.
Is mail only slow when used via webmail or via any IMAP client?
    You're a genius as usually
It seems that I removed my reverse zone accidentally... I didn't even think to look at DNS setting before you told me... Thank you very much

  • Server Admin GUI weird behavior

    SLS 10.7 & Server Admin 10.6.5
Very strange GUI issue when I run Server Admin on my MBP and connect to my local SLS running on a Mac Mini.  The first line of every window is half-cut off (see image).  It is fine when I run it directly on the Server.  Any ideas anyone?

Count me in, as well. I've tried connecting from the server itself, as well as another local machine. I can't enter a bogus serial because it's not even recognizing the server... the serial boxes are all greyed out.
    (Server 10.4.10)
    Please help!

  • Server Admin very slow, rotating status thing spins forever

Whenver I log into the Server Admin on my 10.4 server either locally or remotely, it is very slow. When the machine was first installed it was quite quick.
Now, I am trying to edit log settings for domains and it takes 5 minutes to stop turning each time.
There is no status indicator, and no error message (which is unfortunately currently typical of Apples server admin programs).
What can I do to start diagnosing the problem? Has anyone had this before?

This is fairly common I believe. What OS version are you running on the server?
I've had problem with this, especially under 10.4.2 and 10.4.3. In 10.4.5 this works better.
I might also be the result of the servermgrd bug that 10.4.4 was ment so solve.
Check if servermgrd is taking a lot och cpu. If that is the case, try the following command: killall -HUP servermgrd (probably needs sudo as well)
I'm hoping Apple will solve this soon. Here is a workaround, but I prefer a real fix: http://www.aaronadams.net/index.php/2005/10/10/reignin_an_out_of_control_servermgrdpr

  • Server Admin causes servermgrd crash: "got an empty response"

Starting a few days ago, when one OSXS system is accessed with Server Admin, the servermgrd process immediately crashes. Could there be some file that somehow got corrupted? I've run 'repair disk' and 'repair permissions', and even did a full Disk Warrior run on the boot drive to no avail. No other changes or upgrades were done to the system to prompt this.
Server Admin[357] Server got an empty response (servermgr_info may have crashed)
    crashdump[444]: servermgrd crashed
According to the servermgrd man page, this might mean that /etc/servermgrd/getsslpassphrase is returning a null string (which it seems to do when run manually). But it could also be that getserial_numberinfo() is returning null.
Is there some system file I need to regenerate?
    Thx

  • Running admin server user as non-root

    Hi All,
I have a requirement to run admin server user as non-root. Is this possible and how to go about it.
    giovi

Web Server traditionally runs with a process parentage something like:
Admin Server -> WatchDog -> Primordial Process -> Worker Process
The Worker Process runs with the UID specified in the configuration (nobody, webservd, etc). This is the process that is actually doing the work of being a web server.
The Primordial Process typically runs with the UID specified in teh configuration. The primordial process never handles requests. Its role is to quickly create replacement worker processes if the worker process unexpectedly terminates.
The WatchDog process typically runs with privileged (read "root") access in order to be able to bind to the privileged ports of the OS (any port below 1024). Without privileged access no bind can occur. Once the Watchdog performs the bind it creates the Primordial process, delegates ownership of the port, etc. From then on its role is to watch for unexpected termination of the Primordial process and, if needed, create a new one.
The Admin server is an optional part of the configuration. When used, it also needs to have the necessary rights to bind to the privileged ports.
So then - the only way to allow the Admin Server or the Watchdog run non-privileged and still be able to perform their jobs is to loosen the restrictions on the privileged ports themselves. On Solaris 10 you could do this with:
    # usermod -K defaultpriv=basic,net_privaddr webservd
Then become webservd and start the process.
Note that the Admin Server's UID is set in admin-serv/config/server.xml (there may be a screen for this in the GUI). Look for the <user>root</user> element.

  • Server Admin is very slow to respond

I have a brand new server that I'm doing a fresh install of OSX Snow Leopard on and I'm running into an interesting problem. For some reason, server admin is VERY slow to respond to any service changes... when I first load server admin, it takes 3 minutes to display the services. When I change a service, I get the spinning wheel in the right hand corner of the server admin pane for up to 10 minutes before I can click "save" ("save" is grayed out while the wheel on the server admin pane is spinning).
I've run OSX server from Tiger through Leopard and have never seen server admin be this slow.

    You didn't need to reinstall.
I've confirmed this issue. Stop the firewall by launching the Terminal, and run:
    sudo serveradmin stop ipfilter
Quit Server Admin if it's running (and unresponsive) and wait at least a couple minutes.
Re-launch SA and disable Stealth Mode for TCP/UDP.

  • Now that I was sent by Microsoft to your download update site to get the latest version 4.0.1, Firefox crashes (becomes non-responsive) before opening any site page I try. When will you fix this problem?

For two weeks I have tried to use your automatic download of the latest version 4.0.1. It would sit there telling me it is trying to connect to the download computer for hours, several times overnight. Then, it became non-responsive and error messages were sent to Microsoft who directed me to your download site. After downloading your latest version several times, the new page would open. After selecting a bookmarked site, it would open (sometimes only partially) but when I tried to scroll down, it would freeze up and become non-responsive, again prompting error messages to Microsoft. They must be getting a kick out of this. I'm running a Gateway 7200S desktop with Microsoft XP and Intel single range Pentium 4 processor. I have been using your Mozilla Firefox as my default browser for several years with much satisfaction. Unfortunately, whatever upgrades were made have rendered it useless for me.

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

Try ( alt + cmd + esc ).  Gives you a menu of running applications, and a chance to "Force Quit".

  • Server Admin runs very slow on Server 10.6.2

After what only could be called a power disaster that brought our XServe down hard, when I run Server Admin on the XServe, it's dog slow...it works, but it takes forever to do anything. However, Server Tools installed on my Macbook runs it just as fast as ever. Does anyone have any suggestions besides reinstalling? As our server is still in the set up stages, a backup of it hadn't been made yet...
    Thoughts anyone?

The usual triggers for this (mis)behavior are a bad local DNS configuration within whatever is serving your local DNS, and potentially a firewall issue within the client.
If you've not messed around with your client firewall settings since this last worked, I'll bet on scrozzled DNS.
Verify your forward and reverse DNS translations and the correctness of your local DNS server set-up using the dig tool.
[My DNS notes|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436]; the set-up and verification of DNS on Snow Leopard Server.
As for auxiliary power, APC SMART-UPS 1500 series is a reasonable option for a less-interruptable power supply (LIPS) for an Xserve box and its usual array of companion direct-attached accouterments. And the USB connection from this model is recognized and honored by Mac OS X Server without add-on software; the box will shut down. (I'd look at adding LIPS capacity if you have a FC SAN and Xserve RAID or such, though.)
