Server app on Mavericks broken on a Time Machine recovery

Have installed a replacement hard drive in my iMac and recovered from my most recent Time Machine backup.
Everything seems to have gone well except for the Server app, which is now unusable.
On starting Server I get my first error:
“An error occurred while updating your service data”
Click continue, spinning wheel in the dialogue box.
When connecting to server I get a second error; select “This machine”, log in with previous credentials (an admin user):
“Server requires administrator login
The user is not permitted to administer this server. Make this user an administrator on this server and try again”
The user account I am using IS an administrator on this computer.
I’ve tried a full recovery from the Time Machine backup twice now.
Any suggestions? My thoughts are it could be a Keychain issue, but I'm not sure.

  • Mavericks (10.9.5) time machine and server 3.2.1 user permissions conflict

We are using a Mac mini Server (mid 2010) 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256MB machine. There are 2 500GB hard disks which have each been partitioned into 2 separate logical disks of 250GB each (in total 4 logical 250GB disks).
We having been using this server to file share on the local network for years using Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion (although there were teething problems with Mountain Lion using the new Server app).
After experiencing some issues with an iCloud password change and App Store failing to load, we decided to try updating to Mavericks. Upon update we were prompted to update the Server app to Mavericks version (Server app 3.2.1), this seemed to work to begin with, preserving file sharing and network user records and permissions, however we soon started to experience issues with permissions and Time Machine. We noticed that the Open Directory set up to store our network users was no longer available in the Server app and so decided to erase one of the alternate partitions and perform a clean install of Mavericks and Server app 3.2.1. This proved to produce the same issues with Time Machine permissions and also difficulties with the shared folder permissions.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Linc,
    Thanks for the reply.
The Time Machine folders shown are from the Server app Storage tab which shows all connected hard drives. I haven't set TM drives up to be shared and hopefully the following screenshots will illustrate the current setup. This setup was created from a clean install of all involved software i.e. drives were erased and setup from scratch and the TM drives were simply connected and TM took control from there.
As you can see from these screenshots, when viewing the permissions through the Server app, there appears to be an extra user when compared to the OS Get Info window.
After leaving TM to its own devices over the weekend, I was greeted with a 'preparing backup' message this morning(Mon 13th October), with a last backup completed on Sat 11th October at 15:19:16. Stopping this backup and starting a manual backup has now resulted in a new, never before experienced error message stating that the backup disks can not be found:
    Console reports:
I must re-iterate, the disk was erased and simply connected and Time Machine did its thing. Now as 'admin' it is clear that the folders created by TM do not have permissions so that I can simply view them in Finder, but does this directly affect TMs ability to access folders it has created itself?
One useful bit of information I seem to have neglected is that the erased TM drive is encrypted, however the password was entered when the drive was connected to the machine and there has been no prompt thereafter.
Please help. Only other comment I can make is that before the update to Mavericks and Server app 3.2.1, none of this was a problem.

  • I have a lion server set up to host storage for time machine backups. Is there a limit to how many different computers can back up to the single server to back up. I am only backing up the users folders . The backup drive is an external Drobo with 6 TB.

I have a lion server set up to host storage for time machine backups. Is there a limit to how many different computers can back up to the single server to back up. I am only backing up the users folders . The backup drive is an external Drobo with 6 TB. Right now it seems to back up my users all day long. I set their time machine interval to every 5 hours but it still runs all day long and is very slow. Server is on a new Mac Server mini.

AFAIK, there is no user limit.. it is simply a question of the network load. AFP is a fairly clean protocol.. but TM is not.. it does a lot of testing of the backup.. infact your setting of 5hour gap could well make it worse.
I would sort out the clients that are doing 100GB backups to a different backup location.. no matter how fast your network.. 100GB takes time to backup.. and over wireless forever.. it will never end.
I guess some of these clients are on wireless?? I would separate the TM of wireless to those that are wired. No more than 4 or 5 wireless clients to a target device. Otherwise you are saturating your network with backup data. And use 5ghz.. so close by.. it is much faster than 2.4ghz and you will get much better transfer rates.

  • Not a valid photoshop document after time machine recovery and reinstall of photoshop

After a time machine recovery most of my photoshop documents recovered fine, however there are a select few (and my most recent work unfortuantely) that seem corrupt. It isn't all of my documents. Trying to recover them again from back-up doesn't seem to be working. I did have to reinstall photoshop CS4 after the recovery.
I have seen similar questions on here but none of the solutions have worked. I've tried opening with other programs, I've tried changing the file extentions etc. If the files were just corrupt recovering them from time machine should fix the problem. Many thanks if you can assist.

    SaveChaos wrote:
…but it doesn't feel like corrupt files are the problem…
If it's only a few selected files that are misbehaving but others do open without problems, then you do have file corruption in each of those files.
Go back in time machine to the earliest possible date after each file was created and restore only that particular version of the file.
If that doesn't work, then considered the files irretrievably lost.  What kind of error message do they return when you try to open them?
In any event, it's imperative that you check the SMART status of your drive and Repair Drive (or at least Verify Drive) to check for a failing drive.
As an aside, taking a belt-and-suspender approach, it's my practice to supplement Time Machine with a clone of my working drive and daily backups of my files.  For some reason, I've had three Time Machine disks fail on three different Macs and locations in the last six months or so.
I had Time Machine disabled on all my Macs until I decided to give it one more test run on a 65-lb Mac Pro recently.  I'm not convinced one way or another yet, so all other Macs still have TM disabled for now. Time Machine is very intrusive, and the external TM drives run much, much hotter than external storage files—always a troubling sign in my book.

  • Clean Install Mavericks... Time Machine backups...

    Hey,
I've been having some minor issues with the 'spinning beach ball'/system freezing up, or not even being able to boot up and having to re-install Mavericks...
So I brought it in to a Apple store, and they suggested doing a clean install... I've held off until now, I'm getting a new SSD and will be doing this clean install in a week or so. Is it possible to do a clean install in Mavericks on a new SSD and still have my Time Machine backups available?
I know the one time I changed the name of the hard drive and Time Machine didn't like that... I'm assuming I'll have to name the new drive the same as the old drive was?
I'd rather not restore as they said at the Apple store that could re-introduce the problem, so I'd like to do a clean install, then restore from backup some files/apps and my email.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • Restore iPhoto library from Mavericks to Yosemite, via Time Machine

    Hi people.
I´m experiencing an unexpected problem: I can´t find the iPhoto library on Time Machine. The backup on TM is from an older MBP (Mavericks) and I´m trying to restore iPhoto on my new MBP (Yosemite)
I´ve found the library on my new Mac, then entered Time Machine but I cant scroll back in time to find the older library and restore it. I performed a complete restore from the TM first and everything looks fine. All my settings and apps are here but the old iPhoto isn´t available. I didn´t move the library on the old Mac.
    Any tips?

What happens, if you go back in time, a year or so? Will your iPhoto Library then appear?
Try to retrieve the iPhoto Preferences file from your backup.
It is stored in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist  , the Library folder in your home folder.
Restore this file to your Desktop and try to open it with Xcode, if you have it installed or download Prefsetter  (http://www.nightproductions.net).
Search with Prefsetter for "RecentRootDirectories" and click the disclosure triangle.
The items will tell you the locations of the last iPhoto Libraries you opened.

  • Broken text in Time Machine

    Hello,
I can't find on the forum my problem. When I enter Time Machine, all the text on the bottom of the screen (Cancel,Title,Restore) are broken. I've got only square with arrow in the center, instead of the normal text. I feel like it is a problem of police...
Someone knows maybe how to fix this ?
    Thanks.

Ok here the story : I though that it was only a problem on time machine, but opening iPhoto did the same font display problem, then trying to find a solution on the net, I found a site, but all title and some link were displaying the same "square font" thing... I discover then that it was Hevetica Neue that had some problem displaying well.
But Helvetica Neue was properly install on the computer...
The solution is to clear your system cache with this command in terminal :
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
    Then restart imediatly your computer.
Try to open the apps on web pages where you had the problem : voilà ! the problem is gone.
Just to mention that before all that I did uninstall fontcase from my mac to have only one app. controlling fonts. I don't know if it help solving it, but it's FYI.
    Have nice day everyone.

  • After upgrade to Mavericks I can do Time Machine backups but I cannot have access to them

After upgrading my iMac 20" (early 2008) from Snow Leopard to Mavericks, I can backup with Time Machine and I can see that the copies have been made. But when I enter to Time Machine mode, all these copies in the right bar goes from pink to translucent in some few seconds, and I cannot have access to them.
I have a dedicated external 400GB HD for the copies, formated in Mac Os Plus, and I can go there and open, copy, etc. any file "manually", so, the copies are right (I guess).
Any idea about why I cannot "go back" in Time Machine, although it "sees" the disk, and the copies exist?
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Time Machine recovery from Mavericks

First I backup all my data to Time Capsule using Time Machine.  Then I upgraded from Snow Leapard
to Mavericks.  Now when I go to Time machine I can not find my backups.  It this because Mavericks
    won't recognise it?
    Thanks

Yes, this did work. I booted to the Mavericks recovery drive and pulled the backup off of Time Capsule and resolved the issue.

  • Late 2011 Macbook Pro wont upgrade to Mavericks or restore from time machine backup

I recently tried installing Mavericks on my MBP, but during the installation, it will hang up and restart. I then tried to restore with time machine, same issue. I have used check disk and repair, no issues. I have a boot camp partition on the hard drive as well. When mavericks first came out, I tried to install with the same issues, and I remember recieving an error saying core services couldnt be found. I was able to restore from time machine then.
I have cleared the PRAM, repaired the hard drive, attempted a clean install from a bootable usb, and re-install the OS from the recovery partition with no results. At this point, the mac is a aluminium paper weight.

I have 8 GB of RAM, but would that even matter during install? Performance once installed and running sure, but I questiong whether the installer would demand that much more, or why it would affect mountain lion when restoring from a time machine backup.

  • Mountain Lion to Mavericks, Restore Files on Time Machine

Hey gang, I tried to install Mavericks on my 13" MBP and it completely bombed. I had to boot into recovery and reinstall Mountain Lion. After a clean Mountain Lion install I proceeded to upgrade to Mavericks. Now I have a clean Mavericks install with no other programs, files, etc from my original Mountain Lion install. I have a complete Time Machine backup  from my Mountain Lion install but when I try to use Migration Assistant it doesn't see the disk. I can browse the disk through finder though. How can I get my files from my Mountain Lion install onto this new computer? I do have access to another MBP with Mountain Lion if required to do this.
    Thanks

If that happened to me, I would use the Recovery Disk bootstrap and do a "Restore from Backup".
    Here is how:
Restart your computer, holding the "Command" and "R" keys until you see the Apple logo.  This will boot into recovery mode.  You can then choose a "Restore from Backup" once you establish your WiFi, etc.

  • Broken Alias in Time Machine?

I'm trying to restore a file that was backed up last August via Time Machine.   The file is a Pages document and indicates such when I find it in TM.  However when I go to restore it it won't restore.   If I double click on the file it just shows a blank document.   I also tried to restore it by going directly in with Finder into the Time Capsle drive.   Finder indicates it's a broken alias.   Any ideas on what's going on?   I noticed a large number of my older back-up files have the same characteristic, not just this one file.   However there are some files that look just fine.   I've done a Repair using Disk Utility on the Time Capsule and it came back with "no problems".   Anyone have an idea of what's going on and how to fix?

Did you Repair Permissions and Repair Drive using Disk Utility on the Time Machine drive?
If all this fails, if you have a drive that is large enough you can do a Time Machine restore to that drive. Boot from the drive then do a search for the original files.

  • Clean install of Mavericks, now cannot access Time Machine backups

I just performed a clean install of Mavericks (10.9.1), but now I cannot access my previous backups under Mountain Lion (10.8.5). The new installation recognizes the TM disk just fine, and I can enter TM, but all of my old backups are blacked out. In Finder, I can easily explore the TM disk and see that all of my old backups are intact there. I've got a few large folders (100+ GB) I'd like to restore, but I can't seem to figure out how to get them back correctly. What am I missing?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer...

Things just got worse. After manually copying over some files via Finder, and then performing a full backup of the new system, even the NEW backup is blacked out; e.g., NO backups, past or present, are accessible from within Time Machine.
    Help!

I also have the exact same problem.
I NEVER use Safari, but I tried it just to see if it would also crash. It did. It crashes under all user accounts as well. Please understand that iTunes crashes when I go to the store, and The App Store just crashes after a few seconds (~10) after launch.
Any help with this guys? Here is the log file/dump from starting the App Store...
I am willing to restore whatever from hand. I really don't want to have to restore the OS from scratch and then manually reload everything.
Also. I tried removing all the extensions mentioned, and I had none.
I tried the disk repair utility and it found no errors.

  • Recovering bookmarks and reading list after upgrading to OS X Mavericks; no help from Time Machine

    Hi,
I upgraded to OS 10.9 Mavericks today. Everything seems fine thus far, except for Safari's bookmarks and reading list. Bizarrely, ONE of my old bookmarks was left on the bookmarks bar, while all other bookmarks (except those pre-loaded by Apple) and the entire reading list are wiped.
I'm aware of the path for finding the plist (~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist) — however: Time Machine won't let me go back to before the OS X upgrade. The windows all backups before the upgrade are completely black. As far as I can tell, this goes for all files, not just those in the Library.
My browsing history was preserved. Also, I head iCloud enabled for Safari.
    I'm stumped. Any suggestions?

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.
