Server crashed and burned

I setup a Dns server 2 years ago and then setup postfix to have my own mail server. I will admit that all this took me over a month to figure out as I'm not an IT guru. Many kind people helped through some forums.
Recently I had a complete server melt down. Server and both raid drives gone!
I've replaced all the hardware and I'm tring to start again. I took what I thought were good notes just in case I ever had to start again but I can't get this working.
I have established my DnyDns account and can get my web page to show from out side my network. I'm using DNSUpdate for this and it is linked to a URL for my family.
I'm using a road runner cable modem, with a linksys router. I have postfix enabler but I not sure it's working correctly.
I have tried telnet commands through terminal and I'm getting a "500 Error: bad syntax". When in the mail application, i get this;
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check
the settings for account "richard" or try again.
The server error encountered was: The server "theallisonhome.com"
refused to allow a connection on port 110.
The end result is that I can't receive any mail. I can send mail.
Can anybody help me find a good web page with strong intructions or can anybody offer an help?
As I said, this isn't my strongest talent. I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thank you,

Hi
There must be something you have not done this time around that you did before. As I remember you have to include your DynDNS account details somewhere in your router?
I’ve done a quick lookup for theallisonhome.com and it returns this:
host theallisonhome.com
theallisonhome.com has address 71.70.251.242
theallisonhome.com mail is handled by 10 mx1.mailhop.org.
theallisonhome.com mail is handled by 20 mx2.mailhop.org.
host 71.70.251.242
242.251.70.71.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer cpe-071-070-251-242.nc.res.rr.com.
This should give you an idea of where to look and who to contact? You have to tell the mail part of this domain to forward mail to your DynDNS account. Mail should then start hitting your router’s public port and on to your mail server.

  • Mac MINI server crash and burn???

I have the new 2012 Mac MINI server.  I think it needs repairs and I am wondering if anyone has seen this.
My start up volume crashed and the system froze.  The computer automatically tried to restart but the Mac will not boot.
I get the "three beeps" indicating bad ram.
I purchased new RAM (2 chips) an 8 gig chip and a 4 gig chip.  The system ran for a while and crashed again.
I decided to re-install the system on the other 500 GIG HD (The MINI server comes with two 500 GIG HDs).
Crash, crash, crash. then the MINI will not boot and I get the "three beeps" again.
After a lot of research, I installed one RAM chip in the top slot.  I was able to install Lion on the second hard drive.
All the RAM chips are good if you use them in the top RAM slot ONLY.  If I use them in the slot closest to the motherboard the computer will not start.
THE WORST THING is that the bad RAM caused my main drive with all my important info on it to fail right in the middle of a "Time Machine" back up.
The time machine back-up folder is corrupt so I lost 12 years worth of data and will not be able to restore.
    Now what do I do?

Well not exactly DOA.  I had it for 3 months before it blew up.  That was long enough for me to get rid of all the old back-ups and use an external for the new time machine back up which is corrupt thanks to the messed up RAM.  The exteral 2T drive with the time machien folder is damaged.  DiskUtilities suggests that I reformat the drive. I used DiskWarrior and mannaged to get it back up, but the only back up available is about a month old and I do not know if it will work or not.
I purchased the extended Apple Support for an additional $150.00 so I will be sending the computer back to Apple.  I purchaed it online at the Apple Store.
I have been using a Mac sence 1988.

  • Outlook 2013 CRASH AND BURN - with multiple 'failed VL activation attempt's just prior...

Outlook 2013 crashing frequently,  have removed, reinstalled, etc etc - to no avail
Before the "Outlook" crash, the application log always  shows multiple warnings as below:
The rules engine reported a failed VL activation attempt.

"Off1ce15" - kind of a giveaway that this must be related, no??
This is "Office Home and Business 2013 32-bit" on windows 8.1u1 (32 bit)
Anybody at MS-support even remotely interested in troubleshooting this??

There is a 'volume licence' Outlook2010 installed on this machine, it's been switched back and forth to this a few times, as Outlook 2013 has had numerous issues. The licence key was supplied by our Exchange server provider.
I suspect that Windows simply doesn't clean up after itself! This (recent clean installation) W8.1u1 machine has gone through these versions:
Office365 outlook2013 (trial) - which eventually crashed and burned, so I removed it.
Outlook2013 'volume licence' from my Exchange Server provider - also crashed and burned, so I removed it.
Outlook2010 'volume licence' from my Exchange Server provider.
Office2013 Home and Business ( including Outlook 2013) - but the Outlook2013 crashed and burned, so I removed it, and re-installed the Outlook 2010, which was working fine. Exchange provider has supplied me a volume licence key for Outlook 2010, but
I cannot for the life of me find a place to enter it!!
Have tried clean boot of windows, it doesn't solve the issue of Outlook Crashing. All other Office2013 modules work fine, no problems whatsoever with Excel, Word, PPT, etc.
Outlook safe mode doesn't work, either.. see these log excerpts:

Appreciate any inputs / discussion / feedback / thoughts on this topic.
    Good day.

I just wanted to throw in one more thought.  I have also seen that there is a restart=true parameter.  Maybe if we set this to true, and just issue the command to shut down the server in the script, the managed server will restart on its own.
    Would greatly appreciate any advice!

  • 2 of my authorized computewrs have crashed and burned. Need to deauthorize them before adding the new computer, as well as one of then was my main itunes computer. how do i move everything

2 of my computers have crashed and burned in the last week. One of them was my main computer for itunes. i have 2 issues:
    1) i need to deauthorize the other 2 computers in order to authorize my new one.
2)how do i move all of my music etc to the new computer?
    thank you

Thanks much, that's very helpful for step one (getting old phone onto new phone).  Very clear.
However, I still have the problem of moving to the new computer.  How do I move the sync to the new computer after the new phone is set up?

You'd have to think through this, but it seems like if you are using Outlook, and the items vanished from the Outlook client as well as the server, that you could re-populate Outlook using iTunes.

Why did you start a new itunes account?  This will just cause problems.
Your library will only be where you put it.
It has alwasys been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup, not good at all, then you can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • ???;???; Rollbacks crashing and burning

Well, having an application deployed on 70 machines (W95/W98/NT4.0/W2K) is very educational.
I'm having a problem when pressing the ROLLBACK (red arrow) in NavigationBar. In the examples below, the exact same JAR was being used.
Win98/OJVM/JRE 1.3 (sticking with supported, official configuration )
I get nullPointerExceptions, funky results, and sometimes the JVM "crashes" ( I think )... the whole application just flashes and disappears.
    Win98/Javasoft 1.3/JRE 1.3
Crashes and burns too frequently to be usable.
    NT 4.0/Hotspot 1.3.1/JRE 1.3.1
I do EXACTLY the same operations on EXACTLY the same data... and the program behaves, I get no nullPointerExceptions, no crashes, no tracebacks! Extremely stable, acts just as one would want it to.
Yeah. grin I know... why not just deploy NT 4.0 and the 1.3.1 stuff to everyone? Uh... not officially supported, the 1.3.1 is Beta release... There's also just a JDK, no JRE that I can locate for 1.3.1.
Anyone else run into these sorts of issues and have workaround(s)?

Got it using the debugger... interestingly, I also find that when I swap to my DEVELOPMENT database using exactly the same configuration, I don't get the ClassCastException... but when I point it to PRODUCTION, it gets:

I think I've posted this before, but didn't get a response. THe line pointed to is:
    protected boolean isBoundToLOV(Control c)
    DataItem di = (DataItem)c.getDataItem();
if ((di != null) && (di instanceof ImmediateAccess))
------THIS LINE IS POINTED TO ----->
    AttributeInfo attrInfo = (AttributeInfo )di.getProperty(
    DataItemProperties.INFO_OBJECT);
    if (attrInfo != null)
    return (( attrInfo.getLOV() != null ) ? true : false);
    return false;
and the control pointed to is the combobox that was being modified and rolled back.
This is repeatable behavior when I run it against the PRODUCTION instance.
It's interesting because the PRODUCTION database was exported off the DEVELOPMENT database. I believe that the metadata is identical. I'll certainly recheck it... but the tables look identical when I DESCribe 'em. The stuff may be created in a slightly different order ( all resultsets are unordered unless explicitly sorted, so if BC4J/Wizards are expecting metadata by default in a certain order for some p eculiar reason, or the order as created, things could get interesting ) I can't imagine or see anything like that could be.

  • OS X Server 10.4 won't boot: AppleFileServer: Server crashed and exited...

OS X Server 10.4 won't boot. Starting in verbose mode the error is :
/usr/sbin/AppleFileServer: Server crashed and exited with status 4.\n
Ran fsck, and reported errors. Ran DiskWarrior and those errors seem to have cleared up. Running fsck now reports clean. Running disk utility reports no errors.
Must be a corrupt config file, but where to begin?
    Any help appreciated. Thanks!

    Your enclosure is locked.
When the enclosure is locked, keyboard input is disabled (as a security measure).
Unlock the enclosure (the little lock wheel on the front of the server) and your keyboard will magically start working.

  • Why did my server crash and what to do to prevent this?

    hi there,
i've been following the installation guide on single host and all looked well until yesterday all of a sudden i couldn't see my mail tab when using webmail.
i tried re-logging in several times and from three computers at home but no mail tab was dispayed (calendar, address book, etc were fine). in some occasions i have been displayed an error msg saying i should reconfigure the server.
so i went on today to check the server but having a very limited knowledge of administration i couldn't figure out what to check and where so i stopped all services as advised in single host guide. notably web and messaging servers (or services?) weren't running. i restarted them and now require some help to diagnose why this all happened as i was not getting any emails until the server was restarted.
i was able to log in yesterday morning however in the afternoon server has crashed. it didn't restart or hung up but web server wasn't running anymore. the last email i received was 3.21 pm yesterday. after i restarted all services today, a few emails were displayed immediately with current date and time (10 am today), however i don't know whether these were emails received while server was 'malfuntioning' or they are some left overs from last seconds of working.
i remember myself running update service on the server yesterday and it looked okay today's morning when i found it finished updating the computer. could this be the reason? did update service stopped web server from running?
also after i restarted the machine this morning i had to re-run all services all over again. don't they just start automatically upon reboot? what if power fails and my APC UPS shuts machine down and then boots it back when power regains?
pls help me as i am new guy on the block and want to stick to Sun products but don't want to be put off by some mysterious errors and instability of such a great software package which CommSuite defintiely is.

i've been following the installation guide on single host and all looked well until yesterday all of a sudden i couldn't see my mail tab when using webmail. If you cannot see the mail-tab you need to verify whether the messaging server processes are running. It helps to have a high-level view of how things fit together:
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-4440/6n6jfgch0?a=view
In this case for the mail-tab to work you need messaging server running, specifically the mshttpd (webmail) process and the imapd (IMAP) process.
i tried re-logging in several times and from three computers at home but no mail tab was dispayed (calendar, address book, etc were fine). in some occasions i have been displayed an error msg saying i should reconfigure the server. The error message advising to reconfigure the server is misleading. If this was the first time you accessed the comms-express interface and had no mail-tab then the message is pointing out that you may have misconfigured something (which was really easy to do in earlier releases). As you had already successfully accessed the mail-tab this is more indicating that something is now broken/not-running correctly.
so i went on today to check the server but having a very limited knowledge of administration i couldn't figure out what to check and where so i stopped all services as advised in single host guide. notably web and messaging servers (or services?) weren't running. i restarted them and now require some help to diagnose why this all happened as i was not getting any emails until the server was restarted.Four things you can do at this juncture:
    1. Configure coreadm to capture any future core dumps (assuming of course the processes died abnormally e.g. coding issue, memory starvation ...) http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-5355/6n7eo3v6v?a=view
    2. Enable auto-restart of processes. http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-4428/bgadd?a=view
    3. Check patching levels and update to address known issues. http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hubs/comms/downloads/updates.jsp#cp1
    4. Log a Sun Support Case to have the issue investigated (assuming you have a support contract). http://msg.wikidoc.info/index.php/Submit_sun_support_request
i was able to log in yesterday morning however in the afternoon server has crashed. You need to be very specific about what actually 'crashed'.
Saying the "server has crashed" implies that the entire system (at the hardware/OS level) crashed/rebooted.
If the 'webserver' has crashed then you would be able to access the system via SSH (so the hardware/OS is working) but when you connect to the server using a webclient to get mail, you don't get a connection.
If the 'mailserver' has crashed then you would be able to log into Comms Express or at least see the login page (webserver is working) but one or more components are not working (if you cannot login then chances are there are directory server issues, if there is no mail-tab then this is mail-server issues, no calendar tab, calendar-server issues, no address-book then potentially directory-server issues and so on).
it didn't restart or hung up but web server wasn't running anymore. the last email i received was 3.21 pm yesterday. after i restarted all services today, a few emails were displayed immediately with current date and time (10 am today), however i don't know whether these were emails received while server was 'malfuntioning' or they are some left overs from last seconds of working. If you have enabled mail logging then you can see when the emails were being accepted.
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-2650/6n4u4dtv9?a=view#bgbew
i remember myself running update service on the server yesterday and it looked okay today's morning when i found it finished updating the computer. could this be the reason? did update service stopped web server from running?Which 'update service' are you referring to?
also after i restarted the machine this morning i had to re-run all services all over again. don't they just start automatically upon reboot? what if power fails and my APC UPS shuts machine down and then boots it back when power regains? You need to configure the various components to start-on-boot using /etc/init.d/* scripts. This is a standard system-administration task.
pls help me as i am new guy on the block and want to stick to Sun products but don't want to be put off by some mysterious errors and instability of such a great software package which CommSuite defintiely is.At this juncture I recommend that you investigate Solaris 10 administration training. The issues you have described aren't necessarily isolated to just CommSuite but are more standard system-admin tasks.
    Regards,
    Shane.

  • Meetingplace server crash and lost the default gateway info

    HI all
I have ver 2.0.1.15. I have first eth0 on ip 10.1.1.18 and 2nd eth1 192.168.162.21. will crash and the default gateway on eth0 will be gone. Am i doing something wrong.

    Shannon,
Harry is asking you the right question, because a theme with any bad syntax in it (especially custom XSLT files) will get scrapped when the server restarts.
Try to think of something you changed recently, revert it to see of the theme will show up, and try to find the syntax error in your recent changes.
This caught me by surprise when it first happened, but I suppose it is a nice feature. The Wiki Server falls back on a theme that works, which are the built-in ones. It would be nice if the errors were logged instead of just scrapping the theme, but I assume the spirit is to give you a wiki that works, rather than a nicely themed wiki that has errors.

  • Brand new iMac 24" crashes and burns playing games in bootcamp

If this continues I guess I will have to call support but for those that are interested here is the story:
I have a 24" iMac 3gig and I have installed bootcamp - although I am not convinced as to how well this worked with the driver install as I have problems pairing my bluetooth mouse and keyboard in windows - works fine in OS/X.
If I play WoW in OS/X it seems to handle this. I currently bought Warhammer Online which is PC only so I put it into my bootcamp partition. It runs absolutely fine until it gets hot and then it quite happily brings the machine down.
    Symptoms.
    wireless networking stops
bluetooth becomes unreliable even when rebooted into OS/X
System crashes and screen goes black - no repsonse or anything
I find this worrying as such occurences cannot be doing my system any good.
I installed fan control and tried upping the fans and my ssytem is now a little noisy but it still happens.
After spending so much money on what is touted as a robust and performant system I am very disapointed. It seems despite controlling and selecting hardware Apple are no better than PC manufacturers. Except prettier

Consumer ? The top end iMac ? Certainly my local shop has a different definition of consumer. Agreed the Mac Pro is HIGH performance and also a high price.
For most of my needs I am happy with the Mac, a little disapointed with boot camp but that is all. Not just the game, but also the bluetooth keyboard - just can't get it to work. Works perfectly in OS/X which I guess is the main thing.
Only real niggle in OS/X is the mighty mouse seems to be a bit sporadic with the right click. Works for a time and then doesn't. Very annoying, mainly becuase when it is working properly it is brilliant - so infuriating when it doesn't.
Still - early days yet, and still learning - so hopefully I will sort everything out to my satisfaction.

I need something called 'x11.app' in order to use a program called DarWine. I've looked around the internet and it seems that my only way to get x11.app for my PPC 10.4.11 Mac is to use the installation CD. This however, is missing as I never imagine
