Server farm switch design

Hi
Pls see attachment
Can i have the topology mentioned in the Attachment special from the access switch to the Core?is it good design ? what is your recommendation?
thanks

I can recommend only V-shaped design as it provides great redundancy in case of almost any failures. As you said, if etherchannel fails b/w two access switches, then the Acess-switch-1 and UP to Serverfarmswitch-1 is completely isolated from the other. I believe, even for dual attached servers also, V-shape design suits best.

  • Server Farm Design Guides

    Hey guys,
Can anyone shed any light on the "U Design" server farm building block.
Typically, we have a server farm distribution pair of switches and the server farm access switches connect to both distribution switches in the typical "V design". Now there is the concept of the "U design" where server farm access switch one, does not connect to both switches, but connects to one distribution switch and another access switch and the other access switch in-turn connects to the other server farm distribution switch.
Does anyone have any guidlines to this design? ie, this is only for dual attached servers?
The reason is that I see this box shape design as having a problem, if you were to lose the etherchannel between the server farm access switches. If you lose a switch, this should be OK "IF" you have your VLANs configured correctly,
Please could someone get back to me either saying "what the hell are you on about" or "there are guildines to this design?"
    Very kind regards,
    Ken

  • Server farm design under 3 tier design

    Hi guys,
Just wondering which is best practise?
connect server farm into distribution switches or connect directly to core switches?
Understand from different articles stated different methology but from what i see in cisco network design, server farm is always connected to the distribution switches.
What other factors to consider when connecting to distribution and when to consider when connecting to core ?
    Thanks

Jon, very nice reply.  Thanks for joining this thread.
This makes sense because what real value would a dedicated core provide. If traffic is routing between vlans it does this on the distro switches and the only time it routes anywhere else is to the WAN and you do not high speed core switches to do this.
Yep, in in my cited example, the 4th 6509 uses its 6708's for two off-site 10g links.
I have also done the same as Joseph and connected servers to a collapsed pair of distro/core switches primarily because of cost but also because your core/distro switches tend to have the greater throughput so it is a logical place to put them.. In addition because they are on the core/distro switches you do not have to worry about oversubscribing uplinks from a different pair of switches, although there might still be oversubscription on the core/distro switches.
Re: cost, again, yep, why buy another box?
Re: greater throughput, also again, yep, for example, note I noted 4th box is all CEF720, i.e. all fabric, vs. classic bus in user 6509s.
Re: oversubscription, and again, yep, 4th 6509's server 6748 cards are 40 Gbps to fabric, vs. gig or even 10g uplinks from a separate server switch.
Jon, one reason I enjoyed, so much, reading you've done similar for similar reasons, late last year the business unit came to me and told me they want a separate dual core to increase reliability (as call centers are considered critical).  I noted that, yes, adding a second "core" box, by adding a redundant chassis (vs. the single chassis with redundant everything else) would decrease the MTBF by about 2 hours a year for the off-site links (expensively, IMO, for those 2 hours, but as they are footing the bill, who am I to say no), but I didn't see any advantage for adding another (2nd) "core" box (vs. continuing using the existing box as a collapsed core).  Well I got overruled because you just can't share a "core" device for anything else .
Unfortunately, a case of, I think, some reading some design guides, which say "core" devices do X, and so therefore, you can never do otherwise.  Again, so very much enjoyed reading someone else not following the 3 tier model, always, literally.

  • Upgrade server farm advice

We would like to upgrade our network(see before.gif) that supports our server farm(about 25 servers made). Mostly web and SQL databases.
Currently we have 2 2811 routers running BGP. Each is connected to a different ISP; one via T1, the other via FastEthernet 100Mb.
The routers are then connected to an unmanaged switch(100Mb). The unmanaged switch is then connected to a Checkpoint firewall.
The firewall is then connected to a second unmanaged switch. The servers are connected to this switch.
As you can see there is no redundency besides the edge routers.
Most importantly we would like to add redundency, increase the speeds, use vlans to seperate the servers.
The 6500 route is a little to expensive. We were thinking a pair of 3760 switches that will connect directly to the firewalls(see after.gif).
    Advice? Suggestions?
    Thanks,

The after.gif is a good network design.
Planing redudancy at edge i.e. routers is a good idea. But according to your network design you need to configure GLBP if you want to use both T1 links.
But when comming to firewall redundancy , I think its not ok., due to checkpoint licensing costs. If you has either pix or any other low cost firewall then it would'nt have been an issue.
Comming to switch part you can take good switch like Cisco 3750 or Cisco 3560 and perform NLB on your servers by connecting multiple ports. That will increase the speed and redundancy can also be achived.
    Hope that helps.

Example configs would be impossible as every network is different. I suggest you read some design docs.

  • 3845 or 7600 for routing+switching design

    Hi there,
I need to build a network architecture for 100 serveurs with 1 to 4 IP physical interfaces (10/100/1000 Eth.). Each interface belongs to different LAN/WAN/MAN, on each several VLAN have been created. The goal of this new design is to build a new switching/routing architecture. Question is simple: i've got to options 3845/3825 or 7600 routers ? But do i need to add switches before these routeurs as i'll need hundreds of ports ? How do i managed the connectivity between stacks of switches and the routeurs ? Thanks in advance for your info.

    Hi,
    Good Day!
For your query, if you're looking for resiliency and high-availability since you seem to be setting up a server farm, you can use a Cat6500-E multi-layer switch (capable of both routing and switching). C7600 is also a good option but quite high end if these servers would be deployed to different sites. Most modules and controller cards can be used to both C7600 and Cat6500.
Smaller routers would be beneficial for small nodes. You can use the 3800 series but you have to determine how many switch ports (module) you would require.
If these are critical servers, always put in mind high-availability and reliability. Look for equipment that are designed for these and as much as possible eliminate single points of failure. Have a separate switch to aggregate all your servers, then use a router to route traffic to other nodes.
    Hope this helps.

    Albert

  • The server farm account should not be used for other services

I have created a new SharePoint Foundation 2013 Farm. I only used the Farm Configuration Wizard to create the Search Service Application, all other aspects of the Farm was created using PowerShell.
The SharePoint Health Analyzer is reporting the following error:
Title: The server farm account should not be used for other services.
    Severity: 1 - Error
    Category: Security
Explanation: DOMAIN\FARM_ACCOUNT, the account used for the SharePoint timer service and the central administration site, is highly privileged and should not be used for any other services on any machines in the server farm.  The following services were
found to use this account: Distributed Cache Service(Windows Service)
    Remedy: Browse to
http://centraladminsite:port/_admin/FarmCredentialManagement.aspx and change the account used for the services listed in the explanation. For more information about this rule, see "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=142685".
Now I understand how to change the account used to run the Distributed Cache Service, but my query is what account should I use in the least privelage model? I have setup the following 6 accounts as per TechNet guidelines (Link)
and am not sure if one of these accounts should be used or if another account is required:
    SQL Server service account
    Setup user account
    Server farm account
    SharePoint Server Search service account
    Default content access account
    Application pool identity
After reviewing the TechNet article again, I don't fully understand the section titled "Service application accounts". Is the article advising me to create a seperate account for each row in the table? e.g. 1 account for Business Data Connectivity
Service, a different account for "Application Discovery and Load Balancer Service", another account for "App management" and another account for "Distributed Cache", so 4 extra accounts if I choose to install all of these services
    within the Farm?
Also, what does the article mean when it says "Plan one set of an application pool and proxy group for each service application that you plan to implement."? How do I go about doing this?

Inder: Yes, It is suggested to have multiple service account for each service application. This increases security and dependencyof 1 account on multiple Service applications. Like below
    SQL Server service
    Local System account (default)
    Setup user
Member of the Administrators group on the local computer
    Server farm
    Network Service (default)
    No manual configuration is necessary.
    SharePoint Server Search Service
By default, this account runs as the Local System account.
If you want to crawl remote content by changing the default content access account or by using crawl rules, change this to a domain user account. If you do not change this account to a domain user account, you cannot change the default content access account
to a domain user account or add crawl rules to crawl this content. This restriction is designed to prevent elevation of privilege for any other process running as the Local System account.
    Default Content Access
No manual configuration is necessary if this account is only crawling local farm content. If you want to crawl remote content by using crawl rules, change this to a domain user account, and apply the requirements listed for a server farm.
    Content Access
Same requirement as the default content access account.
    Profile import Default Access
    Same requirements as server farm.
    Excel Services Unattended Service
Must be a domain user account.

Inder: Each service account has a application pool and you can plan to use same application pool for multiple
service accounts if required. These application pool are then consumed by proxy connection
of each service application. On service application pool, you can see all the service applications and its proxy connection.

  • Server Farm Firewalling

    Hi,
My name is Jay Kishan and I am currently working as a network administrator in my company. We have just finished first phase of implementing Server Farm in our Data Center i.e. all servers in a different VLAN and all users in a separate VLAN. (Actually we have 6 different VLANs for users based on what floor they reside on but lets just call it a single User VLAN).
Anyways, so now my manager wants me to put a firewall in between the Server VLAN and the User VLAN. We have around 80 servers running different applications. I think that by putting a firewall in between the two VLANs will have a performance hit since the throughput required between the two VLANs is way too much for a normal firewall to support.
I just want to know the best practice the industry follows for firewalling in a server farm and the main reasons for it. I am searching for some solution myself but would really appreciate any help. As far as I could find, only critical servers are placed behind a firewall in a separate VLAN and inbound and outbound traffic for that VLAN is passed through the firewall. Also, what is the best thing to do. Place a separate hardware firewall like ASA5510 or use FWSM in Cisco 6500.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Jay,
Best recoomended practice is used to have server behind the firewall, so that restricted access will be graneted via firewall on these servers, which can be achived via acl deployment on switches. But firewall will give addionalt feature for blocking with stateful inspection and stateful failovers.
The ASA supports firewalling/VPN/IPS/IDS/Content filtering so it is a fully featured security device and The FWSM is a module that goes into a 6500 chassis but it is important to note that it is only a firewall ie. it doesn't support IDS/IPS/VPN etc.
So upto your choice how want to segregate the vlan traffic using firewall.

  • Small DC Switch Design

    Hello,
I'm working on options for a small DC switch design.  This DC has 5
virtual hosts with 10-20 guest vm's each.  Each server has two quad
port gig nics with 6 of the 8 gig ports connected (3 for iSCSI and 3
for data or management.  It also has two 3 node sans each with 2 gig
ports per node, a host of other small servers including voice servers,
management servers, asa firewall, and a few routers.  Total of 50-60
    ports as of right now.
Connected to the DC is 7 other buildings each with there own 1 gig
fiber connection serving about 3000 devices in total including
desktops, laptops, ip phones, wireless ap's, building automation,
    alarm panels, etc....
Right now in each of the 7 buildings has a 3560G as an aggregation
switch connected back to the DC.  The DC also has a few 3560G's and
3750G's for the sans and servers.  The system seems to work ok for the
most part aside from micro bursts overwhelming the buffers on these
switches and the etherchannel trunks between them dropping a minor
amount of packets.  QOS is configured for the voice network and there
    are little to no complaints.
What I would like to know (costs being the biggest factor) is what
would be a better switch design for the current and future traffic in
this network.  Some options I was thinking about are as follows:
I would needs at least 96 ports.
So option A is to go with a 4506-E bundle with 2 48 port line cards,
sup 6l-e and a WS-X4712-SFP+E or something of the sorts.   And then
upgrade to the enterprise services license and do all of the routing
and switching for the DC on this one switch.  Means little redundancy
    and no failover.
Option B was to go with the same 4506-E bundle, without the extra
license and without the SFP line card and put in some sort of layer
three aggregation switch, possibly an me3600x.
Option C Is to go with the 4503-E, the SFP line card and the IP
Enterprise services license.  And two top of rack switches, either
    2360's or 4948's.
I would like to do some PBR on the aggregation switch, but I am unsure if the me3600x is capable of doing that.
I have no experience in this matter so any other thoughts or
    suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dan.

If cost is the biggest factor, and the only notable issue now is occasional packet drops due to insufficient buffers, perhaps some buffer tuning would be something to consider.
A really important question to answer is how important redundancy. At lower port densities (3 to 4 stack members), the switch stack is less expensive than a chassis that supports redundancy.  At very low port densities (2 to 3 stack members) the stack might be less expensive than even a non-redundant chassis.
BTW, the 3750-E/X offers much more performance than the original 3750 series.  If offers wire-speed PPS and fabric per switch, twice the ring bandwidth and uses the ring, for unicast, much "smarter".
Perhaps a dual WS-C3750X-12S or WS-C3750X-24S for your core with dual MEC fiber etherchannl links to your aggregation switches?  In the DC itself, you might also use 2960s to provide DC edge ports.  For growth, a dual 3750-X stack would support four 10 gig ports which could be used with 10 gig servers or 10 gig SAN or as a 10gig link to other DC switches, such as the 2960S (which support their own stacking technology).

  • Failover between server farms

    Hi,
I'm requesting advise on problem below :
    - I have 2 datacenter with one server farm on each DC and 5 servers behind each server farm
    - each server has 5k max connection limit on each server farm
    - I want to be able to be able to failover to one SF to another when max connection for the server farm reach 25k (that mean each of 5 servers has reached its max conn)
    Can I do that with partial-threshold ?
    in Cisco documentation it's stated : "
Each time that a server is taken out of service (for example, using the CLI, a probe failure, or the retcode threshold is exceeded), the ACE is updated"
Would max-conn exceed be equivalent to "out of service" ?
    thanks for any contribution
    cheers

    Hi,
I beleive Cisco ACE platform because of H/w design will not do failover for partial-threshold when primary server farms servers reached "MAXCONN" state and partial-threshold trigger. you will observe connection drop in that condition.
for your setup i will suggest to use simple backup server farm with no partial threshold. this work and when all the server in serverfarm are no longer usable (out of service or maxconn) back server farm will be activated.

  • LocalDirector Server Farm Communication

We are utilizing a Localdirector for load balancing several server farms. Some of which need to communicate amongst themselves using the virtual address. For instance, if real servers A and B have a virtual address AB and real servers C and D have a virtual address CD. We have a need for either real server A or B to talk to the virtual CD. Can the localdirector accomplish this with a single interface, or do we need to segment these servers on a switch and use multiple interfaces on the localdirector?
    Thanks

Topology is the key here. Depending on who needs to access the virtual is the most important aspect of this type of configuration. If a client from the Internet needs to hit virtual AB, then real server A or B needs to communicate with virtual CD, this can be accomplished by simply placing the real servers C and D on the Internet side of the LD. For instance, client comes through ethernet 0 hits virtual AB and gets load balanced to server B off of ethernet 1. Server B initiates a separate connection to virtual CD and comes through ethernet 1and gets load balanced to server C. Server C responds back through the LD to server B. Server B then responds back to the client.
The above description is typical of web servers being servers A and B and database servers being C and D. If Internet clients need to hit both virtuals AB and CD then this configuration will not work.
If Internet clients need to hit both virtuals AND the each pair of real servers need to hit the other's virtual then you will need to use 3 interfaces of the LD. One for the Internet or client side, one for real servers A and B, and one for real servers C and D.
    I hope this helps.

  • Applet does not load on app server when Free Design Layout

    Hi,
I have to embed a an applet in a webpage of an web application. Before I go on to anything.. let me first tell you, I am using Netbeans 6.0
    As shown in the tuorial:
    1. I first made the "Applet" source say HelloApplet. java. After compiling and running it I get the HelloApplet.jar.
    2. I created a WebApplication and then from the properties -> packaging -> I "Add Project" HelloApplet.jar.
    3. Then I a webpage I "embeded" the applet.
    4. I run the web app and the applet gets loaded and everything is just fine.
But before I go on I must tell you that the applet was designed in Null Layout. Now I edited the applet source once again and changed the layout to Free Design Layout*. ( this is available from Netbeans..on the HelloApplet.java .. go to the design view.. right click on the form and from the context menu you can change the layout to FreeDesign or whatever you might want).
When I expand the "Libraries" node I see the that the library Swing Layout Extensions - swing-layout-1.0.3.jar has been added.
When I "run" the "HelloApplet.java" file, the applet is shown in the appletviewer. No problems with that.
    But!
When I try to Clean & Build and Run the WebApplication, the applet does not get loaded. On inspecting the java console I see the following error:
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/jdesktop/layout/GroupLayout$Group
    at java.lang.Class.getDeclaredConstructors0(Native Method)
    at java.lang.Class.privateGetDeclaredConstructors(Unknown Source)

    at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source)
    at sun.applet.AppletClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClassInternal(Unknown Source)
... 10 moreIt clearly shows that the Free Design Layout has something to do with the GroupLayout which can be found by expanding the "Swing Layout Extensions - swing-layout-1.0.3.jar". Now when the HelloApplet.jar is created only the HelloApplet.class file gets included together with some other data but NOT the swing extensions. Hence when I run the web app the class file looks for the GroupLayout.class definition but can find it in the jar as its not included when the HelloApplet.jar is created.
But with null layout there isint a problem because null layout takes the definitions from the JRE on the machine.. and so it runs without a hitch.
My Question is : How can I run the applet with Free Design Layout? or is it possible to package the swing layout extensions in the HelloApplet.jar?<</u>
    Thanks for all your replies.
    Cheers.

  • SP 2013 - Error: This operation can be performed only on a computer that is joined to a server farm

    Hello Community!
I am working with SharePoint 2013 and I built a farm inside the firewall.  Then a decision was made to move the two WFE's to the DMZ.  Since that time, whenever I try to access the site collections, I get the error below.  Other information: All
the web applications are on port 80, but I'm not having any problem with accessing Central Administration which is on port 8080; the network team did screw up the DNS originally, but I'm told it's correct now; the two WFE's servers show in my Manage servers
on the Farm interface 2X, once with the server name, once with the fully Qualified Domain Name, the ones with the FQDN shows a Services Running status of Not Configured.
Has anyone else ever seen this error and if so please provide guidance and instruction for fixing the error.
    Thanks!
    Tom

    Hi Tom,
According to your description, my understanding is that you got an error when you moved your SharePoint.
This error occurs when the SharePoint farm administrator cannot connect to your configuration database. Please verify the followings:
Make sure that from the SharePoint front end and application servers that you can ping your SQL server.
Make sure that your Farm account has permission to the configuration database.
Lastly verify that your database didn't for some reasons go into recovery mode.
once everything is fine and you are still having issues, restart the SQL host service on the SQL server. Once the service is restarted you will need to reboot Central Admin and then your front end servers.
In addition, as you built your farm inside the firewall, please disable the firwall, or create rules for SQL Server service in the firwall on SQL server. More information about creating rules in firewall, please refer to the following posts:

    I hope this helps.

Is it possible to install Lion on the second hard disk on my Mini (2010) Snow Leopard Server, and switch between Lion and Snow Leopard? I like those voices Lion has in speech.

When baltwosaid NO emphatically, that was described as CORRECT ANSWER. Ditto in the caeses of the radically different answers from  Camelotand Matt Clifton
Could it be that CORRECT ANSWER needs better defining by Apple?
That apart, yes, switching might involve rebooting. About the voices, well, I was the other day adding voice to a commentary in a video I was working on. There's only American English accent in SL — Lion I believe has British ones as well.
Why not, I wondered, try to install Lion purely for academic interest, maybe with an SD card (Sandisk Ultra II, 16GB) as Tom Nelson says is possible at http://macs.about.com/od/macoperatingsystems/ss/Perform-A-Clean-Install-Of-Os-X- Lion-On-Your-Mac.htm
