Server Migration Lion To Lion
What is the best practice to transfer the mail data from 1 Lion server to the other Lion Server.
We are upgrading from a macmini 2008 model intel with a running lion server to a new imacmini server.
The data needs to be transfered from a FW disk to a Promise R6 Thunderbolt disk.
Any advice is welcome.

Dear Apple Support Community.
As mentioned by a number of users reporting the same problem, my 2009 iMac CPU3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, has become extremely slow and repeatedly "out of Memory" since it was migrated from Mountain Lion to Mavericks (OS 10.9 then OS 10.9.1).
I have already run CleanMyMac, deleted 5GB of useless stuffs, which did not translate into any improvement. Following the advices collected in other Apple Support Community threads, I have applied EtreCheck the outcome of which is provided below.
For information, I have also upgraded my 2011 MacBook CPU2.3 GHz Core i7, 8GB which became only a bit slower than before, sometimes freezing which it almost never did before. However, I am used to the fact that Mac get usually slower and more prompt fo freeze after upgrading to a more recent OS.
Both my 2009 iMac and my 2011 MacBook have F-Secure installed. So the problem with the 2009 IMac is unlikly to be due to the presence of F-Secure. Interestingly, the few abnormalities found by Etrecheck were exacly identical before I ran CleanMyMac. There are two more findings (mentioned below) since I ran CleanMyMac on the 2009 iMac, which again didn't improve the problem.
So please find below the details of the EtreCheck experience and some additional measurements made with iStat while running EtreCheck:

Practically:
The iMac can work slowly with only one software e.g. either Mail or Safari or Firefox, but still the below "out of Memory" message occurs about every 3 minutes.
Aperture has becomre to slow to be useable
If trying to write a mail (with Mail) while Safari or Firefox is open, then the "out of Memory" message occurs about every 20 seconds so I need to check on "Resume" several times per minute.
Conclusions
From the above, unless anyone in the Apple Support Community proves to be able to identify a specific problem leading to a way to find a cure, I tend to conclude that Mavericks is not suitable for computers operating with a Core 2 Duo CPU even with a 8GB of RAM.
Unless I missed something, I did not see any warning from Apple Computer Inc. informing their customers they should refrain from upgrading Core 2 Duo Computers.
The only solution I see so far is to downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion. And the Apple Support Community would confirm that it is the only solution, I would appreciate to get your guidance on how to proceed.
Intended action plan
Migrate the above 2009 iMac to a 2014 Mac Mini Server operating on Mavericks to ensure that no data may be lost while downgrading to Montain Lion.
Provided the above downgrading operation is successful, assign this 2009 iMac to partial retirement e.g. Mail, Skype, iTunes and DVD player.
In advance, I would like to thank the Apple Community for helping me either i) finding a cure to the problem, ii) or confirming that Mavericks cannot operate properly on Core 2 Duo computers, iii) and in such a case, guiding me on how to downgrade to Mountain Lion.

Core... what anti-virus would you recommend using?
Use what is already included with OS X. It already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.

The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind. -
Upgrading Server directly from Mountain Lion to Yosemite?-
Hello all,
I have a Mac Mini running Mountain Lion (10.8.5) and Server (2.2), hosting a small private webserver (PHP + MySQL), VPN, some LaunchAgents cron jobs, and file sharing service. I'd like to upgrade it directly to Yosemite and the latest Server app (4.0).
However I'm not an expert in server stuff, and I'd like to be sure that the direct upgrade will correctly migrate all my current Server settings. I've fiddled with the settings over time (including files like httpd.conf or php.ini, or adding self-signed SSL certificates) and I don't think I could easily "recreate" them from scratch if something went wrong…
So here are some questions:
"Software update" is suggesting me to upgrade to Yosemite, which is fine, but does not suggest me to upgrade Server too. Is this normal? I know that Server is a paid upgrade, but I'm surprised there is no automated upgrade process in my case. Also, "About my Mac" shows my OS version as simply "10.8.5", without any "Server" mention, is this normal too?
If everything above is normal, I suppose that the safe and normal way is upgrading to Yosemite, and then buying normally Server 4.0 in the Mac App Store?
In case something goes wrong, is there a way to "export" all Server 2.2 settings in order to import them later in Server 4.0?
My Mac Mini is headless, managed through Screen Sharing on an iMac. Can the upgrade to Yosemite be done without an actual monitor? In other words, will the "Screen sharing" service on the Mac Mini still be enabled? If not, will the "target display mode" work, using the iMac screen and a Thunderbolt cable?

Your computer must be elligible to run Mountain Lion. If your computer came with Mavericks or Yosemite out of the box, you can forget it.
You need an already existing Mountain Lion installer file. If you still have that somewhere, for example in your Applications folder, or anywhere else, it's usable- note that it needs to be originally downloaded with your own Apple ID and password. If you made a Mountain Lion USB installer or DVD back then that would work too. If your Time Machine back-ups go back to the days of Mountain Lion or Lion you could check your Applications folder from inside Time Machine and restore it to your computer.
To not have data loss you need a Time Machine back-up that goes back to when you were still running Mountain Lion. Please note that this will revert your data to exactly the date that you choose. If you installed Mavericks 2 months ago, you will loose 2 months worth of data. -
A stable, fast reliable VNC connection to Lion or Lion server
I hope this post help people with VNC setup from non Mac machines to a Mac running Lion or Lion Server 10.7.4.
Apple has changed quite a few things in Lion regrading VNC and screen sharing. As a consequence many VNC viewers are no longer compatible until the VNC software is upgraded to be Lion compatible. You will find many posts about this topic in this forum, eg

Often, the result is that the user can't proceed beyond the gray login screen (screen locks up etc).
This post describes how configure Real VNCs VNC server on Lion Server 10.7.4 to work in conjunction! with ARD, thus allowing you to keep screen sharing enabled and still use ARD from client if that is desired)
Download the VNC server at (Version 5! necessary)
http://www.realvnc.com/download/vnc/latest/
and install the VNC server on the host (the computer you want to login to via VNC)
Single User Host setup
==================
- Install the VNC server and follow the intsruction
(If you your Mac is configured for remote management, screen sharing, remote apple events the installation may complete with error stating to contact the manufacturer....ignore the error as it most likely caused by a port conflict because VNC server and ARD (or apple scrren sgaring both use port 5900 per default), the software was still completely and correctly installed.
- start VNC Server by opening Finder -> Applications -> Real VNC -> VNC Server (User Mode)
You will see a small VNC icon in the top tsak bar of the screen.
(if you open the "information Center" the issues tab will show a port 5900 conflict)
- open VNCserver Options and select the connections tab:
+Change the default port from 5900 to 5901 and serve Java viewer on Port from 5800 to 5801
+ Change Authetication to "Mac password"
+ Select Encryption "always on"
- Selct the expert tab
+scroll down to the bottom of the list and change "StopUserModeOnSwitchOut" to "no"
(this settings prevents the VNC server to be stopped automatically if you have Fast Switching User Mode enabled on the host.)
- select "Apply"
(now if you open the Information Center" again, the port conflict problem should be solved.
- select "open" from the VNC server menu:
If the configuration was succesful, thw window will show a check mark in a green box stating everything is ok.
- In addition you will find the address that the client user will need to connect to the VNC server on the host
it will say something like "VNC viewer user can connect using the address 192.168.x.y:1"
Note: If you start several VNC servers, each session will need a dedicated port (like 5902, 5903 etc)
Router/Firewall Settings:
===================
Depending on the router/firewall you use your ports may have been automatically configured for you (airPort extreme for example).
You need to open port 5901 and 5801 and forward these ports to the IP address of the host. If ARD was alredy working in your setup, you can copy the port coniguration for ports 5900, 3283 and 3306 that are used by ARD and implement the same rules for the new port used by VNC 5901.
Review the settings of your firewall/router.
VNC client
========
- download the VNC client for your OS from
http://www.realvnc.com/download/viewer/
and follow the install instructions.
- Start the VNC client on your client PC (Windows for example) and enter the address that the VNC server reported to you earlier (192.168.x.y:1)
- Encryption : "Let VNC Server choose"
- select "connect"
- enter your Mac username and password that was setup on your host
you are now connected via VNC to your host.
You can also configure the VNC server to allow other users to login to the same! VNC session using their user credentials (friends/family or serverAdmins that want to share access to the host)
To do this open the options dialog box on the VNC server host computer and select "configure" next to authentication.
- add the users that are supposed to get access to your VNC session using their own credentials. (make sure this is what you really want, otherwise read on in the multi user section of this post)
Multi User Host Setup
=================
If multiple users are supposed to access the host computer using their own credentials logging into their own! desktop, follow these instructions:
- first enable Fast User Switching on your host computer by going to
System preferences -> User/Groups -> Login Options and select the check box "show fast user switching menu as..."
- For each user on the host that should be reached via a VNC session start VNC server (user) as described before and assign a new port number to the new user like 5902 etc.
- repeat the configuration outlined above for each user (eg. "StopUserModeOnSwitchOut" to "no")
(note initilally when you start the VNC server for the first time again, you will get notified that a port conflict exists again....this disappears as soon as the new port is configured)
now another user can login via VNC into his own desktop using the server address : "191.168..x.y.:2"
Final notes:
=========
I spent hours trying to get a variety of VNC viewers to work with the new screen sharing/VNC implementation in Lion and finally gave up. I called Apple Enterprise support and they confirmed that "a majority of the existing VNC products are not compatible with the new VNC implementation in Lion yet and that Apple recommends ARD". The discussion on what other non Mac users (Windows, Linux) should do did not go anywhere....
I have tested the above configuration with the free version VNC server 5 on the host and the free version VNC viewer 5 on a client. It worked flawlessly, fast, reproducable and very stable. You need to be aware that depending on the features you want (number of desktops, users etc) that you may have to purchase the personal or enterprise edition for the server.

I personally installed the enterprise edition after I verified that the free editions worked stable and reliably as I needed them to work.

The main Options... window shows the Connections tab and I just changed my port to something other than 5900 and the port conflict went away.
The Free edition does not allow Mac password and encryption can't be enabled. (Ya gotta pay for that.)
Connected to it from my iPod Touch using Mocha VNC with no problems. -

That apart, yes, switching might involve rebooting. About the voices, well, I was the other day adding voice to a commentary in a video I was working on. There's only American English accent in SL — Lion I believe has British ones as well.

I am trying to get my head around the steps that I would need to do in order to upgrade my Mac Mini server that is currently running OS X 10.6 to OS X 10.7 Lion. I have already purchased the $29.99 Lion upgrade for our other machines in the house.
Do I have to install Lion on the Mac Mini server and then spend $49.99 to upgrade the server tools? Will the existing server tools (that came with the old OS X 10.6 server) still work with Lion? Just trying to decide if spending another $50.00 to upgrade the server is worth it. I also worry about breaking things during the Lion install. I expected that there would be a all-in-one pack to install that would take you from 10.6 server to 10.7 server.

MattUpgrading to Lion Server is a two step process in that the server part is a separate purchase and install. My understanding is that during the upgrade of SL Server, you run the Lion installer, then you'll be prompted for to purchase and download the Server add-on, if the installer does not already find it in your Applications folder. I'm not sure, but I don't believe you can use the old Server Tools on Lion. And I don't think you can "only" upgrade a SL Server to Lion without the Server add-on.
...I also worry about breaking things during the Lion install....
As always, backup, backup, backup. Clone your existing SL installation to a separate hard drive. That way if something does go wrong, it's relatively painless to restore the cloned image. Without a clone, "fixing" a bad upgrade can be quite painful, if not impossible. (If you're going to rely on a Time Machine backup instead, then don't enable Time Machine in Lion until you're sure everything's working. Or disconnect the Time Machine Drive. That way you can ensure that you have a Snow Leopard only Time Machine backup, which you can restore with your original disks that came with the Mac.) -
Time machine backup is very slow after migration to Mountain Lion
After I migrated to mountain lion, Time machine backup is very slow. Time machine preference says there is no previous back up although I had Time machine on before migration. It did not help verymuch to connect an ethernet cable between my timecapsule and my Macbook Pro

Should I erase the previous backup made on Lion before backing up on Mountain lion? in this case how do I transfer the Lion backup file on another disk just in case something goes wrong before I have a good backup under Mountain Lion? just like any other file?After further reading on the forum, the problem was solved: I used the possibility to back up on a second disk (in the preferences Time Machine choose a disk and save on both disks) to make a back up on another usb disk, and then erased the old .sparsebundle file on my Time Capsule. I have then re defined time capsule as the back up disk and then the backup was muuuuuch faster (one night instead of less than 1 giga after 3 days.....)

How can I edit iCal server addresses in Mountain Lion?
I keep getting an error message with my google calendar, and I heard that if I delete the extra slash at the end of the address the problem will be fixed. But the iCal account preferences take me to system preferences > accounts every time I want to edit the account.

Difference of price between mac mini and mac mini server equiped by os lion server makes me asking if i should not purchase a mac mini server instead of mac mini. But what is the main difference between these two Os, for a user today a single computer at home, would it disturb ?

I did not remember what I did select as option during the first install. Did I disable "server" services ? May be.
At the end it does not disturb me, this machine works very fast and is reliable.

just a quick one,
we have a mac mini with lion and lion server.
this was set up only one week ago by another member of staff who is now off site for a while.
we want to reinstall and start again.
i have erased the disc in the start up options the command R option.(i hope that was the best way)
i have started to download lion osx and left this running at work so hopefully it'll be ready in the morning - does this automatically install Lion Server or is this a separate download.
i assumning when this came out the box lion server was part of it, but not sure about re-installation
any advice is welcome

Can you choose to run OS X Lion or Lion Server on the Mac mini server?
This may sound stupid and obvious, but can't you "borrow" a keyboard/mouse from another machine to do the setup?
I'm not familiar with the server version of the software, but if it runs as soon as your machine starts up without having to select a "user" and/or input a password, then you should be able to do what you need to do remotely from another machine. In the Finder, use the "Go" drop down menu at the top of the screen and select "Go to Server". When that opens, "browse" for your new Mini and if it appears, connect to it (hopefully as a user rather than a "guest"). You should then be able to open any file including the "server application".
I think if you have a laptop or other machine with no detachable keyboard/mouse to "borrow", you may be able to get it into close enough proximity to the new Mini to connect them via Firewire (if both have Firewire 800 ports) and work with the Mini in "target disk mode": http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661 -

Received redemption code for Server instead of Mountain Lion
I was one of the lucky ones who got a redemption code which had already been used.
I waited patiently for a new code and just received it. Unfortunately, they sent out a redemption code for OS X Server instead of Mountain Lion.
When I redeemed the code, I got the message that I couldn't donwload the product because it requires OS 10.8. So now I'm stuck with software I don't need and can't get the software I want.
I think that Apple iTunes fulfillment group is in a rush and people are making sloppy mistakes.I just got a new code for Mountain Lion. Oddly enough, I still have OS X server listed in my purchases. I think it's an evil plot to get me to buy a Mac mini.
