Server Monitor on Xserve running Client OS

I have an Xserve running the regular client OSX (Filemaker Server, didn't see the point in installing the full Server OS). Is there any way to get Server Monitor running? I would like to be able to keep an eye on the hardware functions.

Is there any way other than loading Mac OS X Server, you mean? Not directly.
You could enable and use the [SNMP daemon within the Leopard Mac OS X client|http://www.bynkii.com/archives/2007/12/aprimer_to_snmp_on_mac_os_x1.html], but that won't give you the Server Monitor interface.
Or you could see if the [Lithium software|http://lithiumcorp.com] is sufficient for your needs.
Or you could load the 10-client Mac OS X Server distribution, which has the monitoring stuff baked in.

  • 10.4 X-Serve + OS X Leopard + Server Monitor = Unexpected Quit

Anyone know why the Server Monitor crashes when running on Leopard?
The old version (that came with Server Admin Tools 10.4) didn't work, so I installed Server Admin Tools 10.5, and it still doesn't work.
The "Server Admin" and everything works, but the Server Admin (that interfaces with X-Serve's LOM) doesn't work... Well, I say it works... I mean, it'll open, but won't connect to the server (too old.. lol)... But the Server Monitor crashes no matter what.
I've tried erasing the preferences and whatnot.. no difference.
Any help getting the Server Monitor up and running would be greatly appreciated.

I noticed this in the console:
    11/6/07 1:22:39 PM [0x0-0x238238].com.apple.servermonitor[9214] dyld: Library not loaded: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/PlatformHardwareManagement.framework/Versions /A/PlatformHardwareManagement
So I hopped over to my server and grabbed the contents of /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/PlatformHardwareManagement.framework/Versions /A/ and put them in my client machine. This allows Server Monitor to run... now if only I could connect to it :-/

  • Server Monitor - XServe G5 with OS X 10.4.10 client

    Hello,
We run here multiple XServe G5. When purchased, they came with OS X Server 10.3.x
We have configured one of the servers with OS X 10.4.10 Client! because of some of the features of OS X 10.4.x. We are running newer versions of MySQL, PHP and Apache, as well as a third-party FTP server, and didn't want to be bothered with buying and extra license of OS X Server 10.4, now that 10.5 is around the corner. Anyhow...
The OS X 10.4 client does not implement the hardware monitoring System, Server Monitor. My understanding is that Server Monitor is a GUI front-end for hwmond and relies on 3 files:
    /usr/sbin/hwmond (Hardware Monitor Daemon)
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.hwmond.plist
    /System/Library/ServerSetup/SetupExtras/hwmondSetup
I have copied these files from another XServe G5 (this one running the real thing, i.e. OS X Server 10.4.10) to the respective locations on our XServe with OS X client. I have restarted the server, but things didn't work out.
    What did I miss?
Thanks for anyone who can help

You can still use iCloud eMail though, if that helps...
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
    • Server name: imap.mail.me.com
    • SSL Required: Yes
    • Port: 993
    • Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    • Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
    • Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
    • SSL Required: Yes
    • Port: 587

  • Server Monitor no longer working between 10.5 client & 10.4 servers?

I've been running Server Monitor 1.5f6 under 10.4.x on my desktop machine to monitor a dozen or so Apple Xserves running 10.4.x Server for ages (3 years?). Upon upgrading my desktop machine to Leopard the Server Monitor application no longer connects to any of the remote Xserves. They simply state "waiting for connection". I tried every "expert" diagnostic I can think of including deleting prefs, caches, adding & removing server entries, firewall off (on the server), etc. I also observed that upon quitting the application, it often produces a crash message instead.
So I tried what I thought would be the obvious fix of upgrading to the latest Server Admin Tools suite (downloaded from Apple, also v10.5) on my desktop which includes Server Monitor 1.5.1-- only to discover it does not work either.
If I boot back into 10.4, everything works again so I am 110% sure the problem is related to Leopard. The 10.4 servers can also monitor each other fine (as a test).
Now I've seen some similar reports in this forum about problems with the admin tools after 10.4.11 and such. But none of them clearly described IMHO the exact problem of using Server Monitor under a remote Leopard client to monitor a 10.4 Xserve.
Can anyone else confirm this problem? Am I missing something?

Wow, thanks for the article reference. Some times no amount of searching will uncover the hidden treasures.
So... not to be too dramatic but... what is Apple trying to do? PUNISH users that have not purchased any copies of 10.5 server? Why wouldn't they release a stand-alone Server Admin Tools installer like they have in the past? (They "forgot"???)
As it appears someone attempted the package extract approach (and it didn't work), can someone offer another solution?
p.s. Where is that number for my Apple rep... >:-( UNHAPPY!

  • No Memory Status on XServes Running Leopard Client

I am currently netbooting 10.5.6 client on a slew of XServes and using Server Monitor on an old G5 to ensure that all the hardware is OK. In Server Monitor, I am able to view the status of all the usual items (fan speed, temperature, etc) except for the memory status. I am able to view the memory status on the two XServes running 10.5.6 Server, so I'm inclined to believe that this is a difference between the client and server OS.
How can I enable memory monitoring on the XServes running 10.5.6 Client?

Yeah, I was afraid that would be the case. It's actually not just the memory, but network and some other stuff as well (I'm not as interested in those things, so I forgot to mention them!). From what I can tell, without running server, you are only able to get the status of items via ipmi.
Does anybody know, exactly, what monitors the memory in server or if there is any other way to tell when the memory starts throwing errors? I don't need the fancy-schmancy gui, just some way to tell that there is a problem while the machine is up.

  • Xserve running Windows Server in a VM

    Hi Guys,
We're looking to completely replace 4 servers, 2 are windows servers and the 2 are linux servers. We require to keep running those windows services for clients for now. Can Xserve run Windows Server in a VM properly?

I don't know why any small shop would buy a Windows box to run Windows.
It can be done better on the Mac with virtualization.
    Read this link:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2417389&start=0&tstart=45
I'm 145 days of uptime with a 2008 Xserve 2x3.0GHz/12GB/3x1TB/10.6.3/Parallels 5.x running four W2K3 VM's and one NT4 VM. The setup is 2x1TB software RAID-1 in Bay 2/3 with a third 1x1TB in Bay 1, and a 1TB 2.5" USB drive hanging off the back. Utilization with 10 clients is <10%. Yawn.
Scheduled SuperDuper flings the Bay2/3 1TB RAID over to the internal 1TB in Bay 1 and the USB at night giving my a 1 day stale backup of the running VM's.
I can pull the USB out, plug it into my 15" i7, double click on the VM's and run the whole office.
The Parallels Transporter app can often be used to pull your entire server over into the virtual environment on the Mac, so your clients don't even know anything happened.
You will need legit/licensed/bonafide Windows with keys to do this, as Windows will recognize that the hardware has changed and want to be re-activated.
Get Parallels, dump your Windows boxes and don't look back.
If this is your first Xserve though, be prepared.
    It's loud and hot.

  • XServe + Server Monitor = "Waiting for response"

I have 5 Xserves. All are running 10.4.6 Server. One of them I am able to connect to via Server Monitor. I have done a bit of searching the forums and can't find anyone with a similar problem. What can I look for to start troubleshooting this?
    Thanks!

    Thank you for the response.
XServes are on different subnets. The one I am able to connect with I can connect with no matter what subnet I am on. I cannot talk with any of the others regardless of which subnet I am on.
Admin tools are a fresh installation (recently reinstalled system) MacBook Pro, fully updated.
I am trying to connect to the servers via >server>add server and entering their IP addresses in. I can connect to the servers via Remote Desktop, as well as with AFP shares. The servers are working correctly, with the exception of my inability to use the Server Monitor.
I also cannot seem to use the Server monitor locally on the machine. If I run Server Monitor and try to connect to the server via 127.0.0.1 or via it's internal IP address, I get the same "Waiting for response" message.

  • Can an xserve running 10.5.8 handle clients machines running 10.8.3

I have an xserve running 10.5.8.  We got three new machines running 10.8.3.  None of the programs on the client machines want to open, iphoto, mail, contact etc.

Just an FYI for anyone who might be searching for this solution. I recently discovered that the NSF share fix works also on a 10.6.8 OD server with OS X 10.8 clients using network homes, to resolve write to network application compatibility issues.

  • Monitor Tiger Xserve from Server Monitor on Leopard machine?

I can't get my G5 Xserve 10.4.11 to show up in Server Monitor 1.6.1 (2) running on my Mac Pro.
My Intel Xserve 10.5.6 shows up just fine.
In fact the G5 Xserve even shows up in Server Admin but I just get 'Waiting for response' from Server Monitor.
I recently rebuilt the G5 Xserve 10.4.11. I wonder if there is something I forgot to reconfigure after the rebuild?

Sorry, somehow got into the regular 10.5.6 forum was looking at the 10.5.6 Server forum earlier. I will repost.
If there were an admin, I'd ask to have the post moved

  • Want to connect to client's server with ARD, and run ARD on the server.

Hi, I have Apple Remote Desktop and use it to monitor, update and service clients servers. I also have client's buy ARD to use internally to access, update and maintain computers on the network.
When I try to access/sign-in to a server with ARD, when it's running ARD, it will not connect.
What is the proper way to ARD into a server and still be able to run ARD on the server to connect with and work on other computers on the local network?
    Thanks in advance.

On the client server install of ARD, open ARD, select preferences, select security tab, and make sure "allow control of this computer when ARD is running" is selected.

  • Server Monitor on Intel XServe Problem

2 weeks ago - our new XServe Intel arrived. It is our 3rd, one G4 XServe running 10.3.1 sind 2003, one DualG5 XServe running 10.4.8 since 2005 - nonstop uptime.
    So both machines run well.
With the Intel XServe I installed the new AdminTools like ServerMonitor on a Powerbook G4 and a old G4-466 - both running 10.4.8
But now I have 2 Problems:
First: With Intel XServes Server Monitor I can access the 10.3 Server, but I cant see the little icons and check things like van rpm or CPU temperature - it just shows nothing. Using the G5s 10.4 ServerMonitorversion it works.
Second: I am unable to connect to the Intel XServe via Server Monitor - it always tells me "Auf Antwort warten" in English like "Waiting for response", not even with the G5 Softwareversion.
I already checked the com.apple.hwmond.plist file and startet the hwmondSetup in the Terminal - nothing works.
Even not, when I start the application on the XServe itself.
ServerAdmin and the rest of bundled software is running well.
    Anybody knows?

  • Disk image mounting and disk utility oddities on Xserve running OS X Server

I continue to run into an odd problem on one of my server setups. It is a 1.33 GHZ Xserve running OS X Server 10.4.11. There are four ATA drive installed (two of which are mirrored using Softraid 3.6.6). There are a total of 6 Firewire drives on the Firewire 800 Bus. Three of those are used for sharing out files and the other three are for various backups.
What happens is that I sometimes run into an issue where dmg files will not mount. There are no error messages and nothing in the log, they just don't open. Likewise I am unable to launch Disk Utility, it just spins and spins never displaying the drives, again nothing in the logs, no crashreporter. I have also found out that the same thing happens in System Profiler when I try to get a list of drives on either the ATA bus or the Firewire bus. Mind you they all show up on the desktop. Likewise I have had no luck getting them to list or run permissions or the like from the diskutil commandline. Now I am able to mount actual drives. When I swap out the offsite backup drive it mounts the new drive just fine. However... when I eject the drive and it has disappeared from the desktop and then I remove it... I get the removal error.. you didn't put the drive away properly message.
Now there are no disk related events showing up anywhere in the logs. The only other oddity that I can see is that my rsync backups tend to generate a ton of zombie processes. I get zombies of cron, sh, rsync, and mail.
It is just a pretty straightforward shell script
    /usr/local/bin/rsync -E --archive -eahfs --delete /Volumes/Files/Shared\ Items/ /Volumes/Backup\ Files/Shared\ Items/
Running in cron with it set to email the logs.
Now this does all clear up when I reboot the server... but it also doesn't reboot cleanly. It closes down all of the applications, login window and the like and then hangs on the shut down portion. Eventually I have to power it off manually. I've done the normal Volume checking on the main drives and they come up with 0 errors.
Hoping someone might have some ideas before I end up having to backup and reinstall the whole thing.

Also when I try to open the disk image file I get the following error in the log.
xserve kernel[0]: disk10s10: media is not present.

  • Why does Server Monitor not work with non-Xserves?

Does anyone know why Server Monitor does not work with non-Xserve computers? We acquired a Power Mac for a server, based on there being no apparent difference except for the obvious. Turns out there are some differences after all.
Do Power Macs lack some hardware components or is this just a software thing?

God question, unfortunitly I dont have the answer but I would also like to know why the software only works for X-Serve....Is there any 3rd Party Software that is similar to "Server Monitor"?
    Thanks

  • Opening a text file in server from an applet running in the client

    Friends,
    I want to open a text file in the server(The server machine uses tomcat 4.1.12 server)from an applet running in the client machine;
The applet invokes a servlet that opens the text file;this text file is opened in the server machine; but I want it to be opened in the client machine where the applet is running.
Plese help me to get around this.

You can open the textfile on the servlet and then send the information to the client (applet) as stirngs. The must then applet convert the stirngs into some object or simply display the information in someway. But then the text file that you are opening must be stored in some relevant tomcat directory e.g. on the server. If you want to open a file on the clients computer, you get into signed applets.
