Server on isolated network

Question is: what's a good configuration for multiple ethernet ports, i.e. four in a Mac Pro, with OS X Server with Open Directory that does not cause the Open Directory pane of Server Admin to hang eventually. I was using three ports for my cluster: 192.168.0.250, 192.168.1.250, 192.168.0.251, and one for access to my isolated network 192.168.100.1.
I've been trying to configure OS X Server on to run on an isolated network off and on for months. OS X Server is the most fragile operating system I have ever dealt with (I've installed and configured OS 6,7,8,9, W9x,XP,IRIX,SUSE & Debian Linux). Today I reformatted, reinstalled starting with 10.5.4 Server, updated using DMG's, configured the network for my four ethernet ports, I got DNS configured on this one machine for this one machine, I configured DHCP next, then I started on Open Directory, funny thing is I can't change from a Standalone Server, that option is grayed out, and now Server Admin is spinning again. changeip -checkhostname confirms that the DNS is working just fine. The logs show nothing is happening.
Apparently this time I should not have configured the four ethernet ports, since (a) disabling three of the ports seemed to have solved the problem) and (b) that is all I did different from the last time I installed this Server (which I formated after the Server Admin decided to freeze always for no reason after I used Software Update through a shared ethernet connection via the fourth ethernet port to avoid messing with the primary).
1) Why update using DMG's - connecting this machine to the Internet requires changing the ip address and after pulling the machine off the Internet the Open Directory pane of Server Admin always freezes up after that operation.

Side note: I noticed in another thread, that for isolated network configuration you disconnect the ethernet cables at the initial configuration step otherwise that Server Configuration Script will crash and restart. That worked well for me.
By the way this is an Advanced Configuration since only advanced has the features we're going to use.

  • Cannot connect to my Server across my network

    Hi
I have a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard Server preinstalled.
At this stage, I need my server only to be available on the local network and I am not part of a larger organisation. We have run an informal network in the past through our wireless router but want to use the server within this network mainly for file and print sharing, calendar, contacts and wiki sharing.
So, the network is as follows:
Wireless router provides access to the outside world, and provides IP addresses as subnets to the other macs and PCs. All the machines can see each other currently and can share files (permission dependent of course).
I have setup the new server and it has been given an IP address by the router. When asked to provide a domain name, as we don't currently want to point our internet domain towards this server, I followed the suggestion in the Getting Started guide and entered myserver.private.
I have activated all services except mail and VPN as I don't intend to host my mail internally and I am not ready to use VPN just yet.
All the other machines can now see the server - its name shows on all the finders and explorers. However, when we attempt to connect to it, Finder reports Not Connected.
The admin user for the server is the same as my user on my iMac, but when I attempt to connect my user to the server from the iMac (via the Accounts dialog in System Preferences setting Login Options and connect to Network Account Server), I receive an error stating that the server name cannot resolve. The error number is 2200 - Could not resolve the address. I have tried putting the IP address of the server in as well as the name, but no joy.
What am I missing? What else do I need to do?
Thanks in anticipation. Used to support Unix servers machines in the early 90s. But can't remember!

Here's what worked for me. Sounds like my office is similar to yours.
By default, the router acquires DHCP onfo from the ISP, including the address of the ISP's DNS servers. By default, each workstation acquires DHCP info (including DNS addresses) from your Router. That means that by default, your workstations contact the ISP's DNS servers directly. Nothing is telling them about the existance of your server, and many of their functions won't see it and won't work properly.
You have a choice, you can manually configure each workstation to point to your server for their DNS, or you can manually configure the router to hand out your server's address for DNS.
I prefer the second option, since it requires zero configuration of the workstations, which also means that any time a new workstation comes into your office (laptops, iPhones, etc.) the system just works. Less deskside support burden for you. The workstations contact the router for their DHCP handshake, and are told by the router to contact your server for all DNS inquiries.
On the server, obviously, you need to make sure that DNS is working correctly. That includes, manually entering your ISPs DNS servers (or any other DNS server you trust, like OpenDNS, Google DNS, etc.) in the Server Admin DNS Settings as the lookup servers (these go in the confusingly named "Forwarder IP Addresses"). Entering multiple external internet DNS servers in this box is acceptable, so you have some "failover" abilities.
Also, on the server, in System Preferences, you should manually configure the DNS options to point to the server itself. That means that when any random process running on the server needs a DNS lookup, it will use the DNS server running on the server to resolve it.
The downside of this approach I have described above is that if your server is ever shutdown, none of the macs will "see" the internet. Their macs will go to your server for their DNS inquiries, and receive no response, and get strange errors (timeouts). It means taht if you ever have to do server maintenance, you'll probably have to do it on nights or weekends, or temporarily change your router's DNS settings to point to the outside world DNS servers while your own server is down, and then change the router back afterwards. My server uptime has been very good so far, and this hasn't been a problem at my office.

  • How do I get connected to a server on my network via an IP address?  When I try to open in a URL and login as a registered user with proper login it errors out saying there was a problem with connecting to the server?

I am new to Mac...How do I get connected to a server on my network via a hyper link IP address path?  When I try to open in a URL and login as a registered user with proper login it errors out saying there was a problem with connecting to the server?

Some of the following is going to use some technical terms — this area is inherently somewhat technical.
If you don't understand some part of the following reply, please ask.
Is this your own OS X Server system on your own network, or is this some other server within some larger organization?
You're posting this in the OS X Server forum, which is a software package that allows OS X systems to provide web-based and many other services; to become servers.
If it's your OS X Server on your network, then the network and DNS configurations are suspect, or the server is somehow malfunctioning or misconfigured.   This is unfortunately fairly common, as some folks do try to avoid setting up DNS services.
If it's a larger organization and somebody else is managing the server and the network, then you'll probably need to contact the IT folks for assistance; to learn the network setup and DNS requirements, and if there's a problem with the server itself.
The basic web URL "hyper link IP address path" — without using DNS — usually looks something the following, where you'll need to replace 10.20.30.40 with the IP address of your server:
    http://10.20.30.40
UptimeJeff has posted a URL that specifies the AFP file system; an OS X file share.  That's used if you're connecting to an Apple storage service somewhere on your network.  You might alternatively need to specify smb://10.20.30.40 or such, if it's a Windows file server.  (There can be additional requirements for connecting to Windows Server systems, too.)
If there's local IT staff available here, please contact them for assistance.  If these are your own local systems and your own local OS X Server system, then some information on the server will be needed.  (If you're on a NAT'd network, you'll also need to get DNS services configured and working on your local OS X Server system and your network — you'll not be able to skip this step and reference ISP DNS servers here — or things can and usually will get weird.)

  • Analytic Server Error(1042017): Network error:

I keep getting this error when building dimensions in essbase 9.3.1. It happens every other run of the same package. If I run the same package again it works..
    ****Analytic Server Error(1042017): Network error:*****
Has anyone else run into this? If so, what is the best approach to fix it.
I have already changed the netdelay and netretry settings in server config for essbase.
I have also tried putting the client essbase.cfg file with these settings where ODI will use it, I can't figure out where to put it so ODI essbase driver will use it.
    Thanks for your help,
    Rami.

    Hi,
It could actually be a network error or it could be down to a limitation with windows where it can't handle the amount of connections are being opened to essbase.
To get around this some registry setting changes are required
    1. Open the Registry
    2. Navigate to Local Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCPIP\Parameters
    3. Add new DWORD Value named TcpTimedWaitDelay, right click and select Modify. Select decimal radio button, type in 30.
(The default value of this parameter is 2 minutes.
This is how long it will take for a TCP/IP port that was used by the network for a connection to be released and made available again.
30 sec is the minimum allowed by Microsoft)
    4. Add new DWORD Value named MaxUserPort, right click and select Modify. Select decimal radio button, type in 65534.
( The default value is 5000. This determines the highest port number TCP can assign when an application requests an available user port from the system.
    5. Add new DWORD Value named MaxFreeTcbs, right click and select Modify. Select decimal radio button, type in 6250.
(The default value is 2000. This determines the number of TCP control blocks (TCBs) the system creates to support active connections.
Because each connection requires a control block, this value determines how many active connections TCP can support simultaneously.
    If all control blocks are
    6. Apply to essbase machine and machine using the API to connect to essbase, reboot machine after changes.

  • Using NIC Teaming and a virtual switch for Windows Server 2012 host networking and Hyper-V.

Using NIC Teaming and a virtual switch for Windows Server 2012 host networking!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mOuoIWzmdE
Hi thanks for reading. Now I may well have my terminology incorrect here so I will try to explain  as best I can and apologies from the start.
    It’s a bit of both Hyper-v and Server 2012R2.
I am setting up a lab with Server 2012 R2. I have several physical network cards that I have teamed called “HostSwitchTeam” from those I have made several Virtual Network Adaptors such as below
    examples.
New-VMSwitch "MgmtSwitch" -MinimumBandwidthMode weight -NetAdaptername "HostSwitchTeam" -AllowManagement $false
Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "Vswitch" -SwitchName "MgmtSwitch"
Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "Cluster" -SwitchName "MgmtSwitch"
When I install Hyper-V and it comes to adding a virtual switch during installation it only shows the individual physical network cards and the
HostSwitchTeam for selection.  When installed it shows the Microsoft Network Multiplexor Driver as the only option.
Is this correct or how does one use the Vswitch made above and incorporate into the Hyper-V so a weight can be put against it.
Still trying to get my head around Vswitches,VMNetworkadapters etc so somewhat confused as to the way forward at this time so I may have missed the plot altogether!
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi P.J.E,
    >>I have teams so a bit confused as to the adapter bindings and if the teams need to be added or just the vEthernet Nics?.
    Nic 1,2
    HostVMSwitchTeam
    Nic 3,4,5
             HostMgmtSwitchTeam
    >>The adapter Binding settings are:
    HostMgmtSwitchTeam
    V-Curric
    Nic 3
    Nic 4
    Nic 5
    V-Livemigration
    HostVMSwitch
    Nic 1
    Nic 2
    V-iSCSI
    V-HeartBeat
Based on my understanding of the description , "HostMgmtSwitchTeam and
HostVMSwitch " are teamed NIC .
You can think of them as two physical NICs (do not use NIC 1,2,3,4,5 any more , there are just two NICs "HostMgmtSwitchTeam and
    HostVMSwitch").
    V-Curric,
    V-Livemigration , V-iSCSI ,
V-HeartBeat are just VNICs of host  (you can change their name then check if the virtual switch name will be changed )

Your design is what's failing. eDirectory is designed to have all servers
available, as part of their participation in a shared database. It's not
designed to have parts of it lopped off to function independently.

  • Airport express for isolated network diagnostic tool.

I have many isolated IP networks that I maintain. I am amazed by the network scanning capabilities of my iPhone.  I use the various scanning tools when setting up wireless networks.  My question is:  can I use an Airport Express connected to an isolated network (no internet connection) via an Ethernet cable and connect my iPhone wirelessly to scan the wired network.  I have been reading that the Ethernet port is only active when extending an existing wireless network.  I would need to be able to set up a static IP address to get it into my network.  I'm hoping this would work, much quicker and portable than a bulky laptop and computer bag.

I have been reading that the Ethernet port is only active when extending an existing wireless network.
It would also be active (802.11n AirPort Express only) if the Express is configured as a wireless Ethernet bridge. Apple calls this mode ProxySTA. However, in this mode the Express would not provide a wireless signal.
To get around this, you would need to use a second Express connected to the ProxySTA by Ethernet. This second Express can then broadcast a wireless network for your iPhone to connect to.

    Any ideas?
Thanks for any help or suggestion

Smells vaguely of a DNS error or IP routing or a network connectivity problem.
What did you specify for your network settings, and particularly what was entered for the DNS server address? If you're not running DNS on your local network here, then enter no DNS servers as part of the prompting, and let Mac OS X Server establish its own default single-host DNS.
(You're not going to be able to use your ISP DNS here; those ISP DNS servers are not valid when you are establishing a server on a network behind a NAT gateway.)
I'd probably wipe the disk and boot from DVD and reload.

that really sounds like security software.
The error is making generic possible reasons, but the key is the connection was lost.
Some Reasons I am aware of are.
    1. Anti virus (Using your operating systems safe mode with networking is the only way to be sure you have an anti virus turned off. They lie)
    2. Poor DNS resolution.
    (Defective DNS settings)
    3. Intermittent faults is your connections. (Email is two way communications and each end waits for an answer. Web pages are basically one way. You request a page elements and the server forgets about you until the browser asks for the next bit. So frequent short interruptions are not noticed the same at all)

In the original poster's post he said he wanted a fully functioning server so I assume he wants Server 2008. If he is misusing the term server and only needs a peer network then he can install Windows 7.
