Server Recommendations?

I have been encountering ongoing problems with a Mac InDesign and PC InCopy workflow on PC Servers.
Is there a recommended type of server for optimal performance for InDesign/InCopy workflow?
Thanks in advance

InDesign CS 6 InCopy CS6
Problem 1. There is only one InDesign user (me) I encounter an intermittent problem when trying to open the file on the server, sometimes the file opens as "Read Only" in which case any changes I would like to make cannot be saved without creating a new file and fouling everything up.
Problem 2. Sometimes the InDesign file opens correctly for all appearances, but when trying to save, the message appears that the document is "in use by another user" when, in fact, this is not the case, however the InCopy users are usually in the file. Alerting the whole team to close out alleviates the prob.
Problem 3. In InDesign create a new text box, create an .icml file for it in the usual fashion - appears ok and editable on some seats of InCopy, appears as a red question mark (ie file missing) for other users. Intermittent problem.

  • Installing BOE XI 3.1 and Data Services on same server, recommended or not?

I am fairly new to the BusinessObjects world.
I have been told that it is not recommended that both BOE and  Data Services exist on the same server.  I was just wondering if
there is any documentation (best practice) or technical reason why these two could not coexist on the same server so that I can provide that to our server administrators.
Thanks in advance for the assistance.

    Hello,
you can do that for Test and Integration Environmenr but i would not recommend it on Production.
I noticed that not the RAM utilization is the "problem" with DS its more the Disk I/O. If you have the Filestore from BOE on the same physikal Disk as the JobServer from DS your Reportviewieng could be a bit slower.

  • Which Cluster Server recommend for SAP ECC 6.0

    Hi,
I want to ask you, which Cluster Server can you recommend us for SAP R/3?
    best regards.
    Emre

For windows you can use the windows MCS clustering system. For further detail you might want to check out the install guide for your version of SAP software to get an idea of what is needed from a hardware standpoint [Install Guides|http://service.sap.com/instguides]
Are you looking to cluster the DB, the app server, or both?
    Hope that is helpful.

  • Fax server recommended

    Hello,
We are looking out to install a fax server in our Office (Chennai, India) for our SAP systems in ECC 6.0.
We are still in the process of deciding on the right faxserver to meet our requirements.
It would be helpful if you could throw some light on the below areas of our concern:
    1)      What are the Fax servers recommended by SAP?
    2)     Primarily, will be able to print sales order, purchase order and Certificate of analysis (COA) from our SAP systems?
    3)     What are the additional hardware requirements (with specifications) required to install the fax server?
    4)     Is there a trial version available? If so, for how long? Can we install the trial version on our own/ do we need the assistance of third-party vendor team?
    5)     What is the approximate cost involved in installing the fax server in INR(Indian Rupees)?
    6)     Will we need the assistance of a third-party vendor to install the fax server and for future maintenance?
    7)     Duration and cost of maintenance?

  • Which web server recommended for web development?

am running on windows xp, what are your recommendations regarding the web server?
am looking to develop JSP, servlets and web services.

JBoss, GlassFish and Tomcat are three pretty popular ones. I'd recommend researching them, seeing which one fits your needs and making a selection. No one here knows your full set of requirements or what you intend on doing and - therefore - no one here is qualified to tell you which product to use. Only you know what you need so only you can make the decision.

  • Wireless Print Server Recommendations

I have a MacBook (10.4) and a Dell Inspiron Notebook. I'm getting ready to purchase a wireless print server, which wireless print routers do you recommend that will be Mac friendly (i.e easy to set up with both my Dell & MacBook).

It is really a question about the printer and its driver. The Mac situation is different from Windows. Most non-postscript printers come with Carbon drivers, where the comm protocol is written into the driver. USB non-postscript printers come USB-only drivers. To use the OS X built-in protocols, you need CUPS drivers (or postscript driver/printer).
Except for one or two models out there, nearly all print servers use the industry standard comm protocols LPD, IPP, HP jetdirect or appletalk.
Apple print servers are yet a different situation - they have firmware that works like Mac-to-Mac print sharing (so they can use USB-only drivers).

  • Print server recommendations?

Does anyone here have much knowledge or experience of Print Servers? I'm looking for recommendations on one to share two Epson printers between a couple of G5 macs running 10.5, connected via an ethernet network - I've seen this model
    http://www.jigsaw24.com/default.aspx?IP=&ITEM=JIGSG245AKA
any opinions on it or tips or recommendations that would be helpful?
    TIA

Read all this for "info" only.... Go to the bottom.
I think you should read this:
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1013.html
and then try an Airport Express.
The real issues people have with print servers (which nearly All use industry-standard protocols) is that most non-postscript printers don't come with drivers that work for network printing (ie, only if the printer comes with network connection built-in does the driver work over a network). Airport Extreme/Express get around this because they use Apple's "printer sharing" technology/software to allow USB-only printers to be shared (USB output gets forwarded to the device that's sharing).
PS - I don't have an Airport Express. I use Mac printer sharing for my Epson, and print servers for my postscript printers.
another PS - Try adding the printer using the Gutenprint driver. If that is acceptable print quality, then you can use a regular print server, because Gutenprint (CUPS) drivers work with any comm protocol. To update your Gutenprint:
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php
yet another PS - I see the device you want to get is recommended for the 1400. I believe that means Epson provides a network driver for your printer model. I think it will work well in that case! Sorry for the unnecessary info.

  • Content Server - Recommended Hardware?

Can anyone throw out a recommended hardware configuration for running 3 moderately busy public websites plus an intranet? Bandwidth requirements are roughly the following (with the strong likelihood of increasing in the short term):
Public websites: roughly 20 - 25 GB per month
Intranet: roughly 30 GB per month
The intranet will have a significant amount of document conversion going on, so we already planned on having the conversion server running on a separate box, and we were considering our options for what to run the DB on (HP UX is in the running as there are some other systems in place that run on it - but, as we're trying to control costs, that may change).
On top of that, we know that we want a development and production environment and that's about it.
Any recos on the amount of processing power / RAM we might need per machine and how many machines should get us in the game (we have some pretty ambitious goals with the entire system, but we're trying to shoot for "in the middle" as far as what we need in the short term and what we'll have to go back and ask for money for later on).
    Thanks

I might be getting out of my element here and I have no idea what your admin capabilities are, but have you considered the 'bang for your buck' ramifications of per processor licensing for UCM 10gR3?
I think a processor license on Intel/AMD architecture equates to two cores or a single processor. HOWEVER, on an UltraSparc architecture a processor license equates to four cores.
So, maybe this isn't what you were asking about but I thought I'd toss it out there for your consideration. Hence, since right now the list for a processor lic is nearly 115k and in your scenario you are using a 4 core windows box for each of your two production boxes you would need 4 licesnes (8 cores / 2 cores per lic = 4 lics). If you can deal with Solaris you could save money as the same setup of two 4 core boxes on ultrasparc would yield only 2 licenses. Ta dah! Saved 230k. Well, that's my good idea for the day I guess.
Of course, you may hate solaris/unix/linux/whatever and/or simply be used to windows.

  • Print server recommendations for Laserjet 1018

I tried using Apple's Airport Xpress with my laserjet 1018 as a print server, and it worked ok on my laptop (wireless) but quite poorly on my desktop (wired). My laptop is Vista; desktop is XP. Apple said that the problem was with the OS or the printer.  Man if I had a dime for all the tech support calls that have claimed that their product wasn't the problem....
Rather than making numerous trips to best buy or purchases on amazon, is there a compatibility list for the 1018 and print servers? I know this seems to be tricky, as I've seen numerous complaints about the lack of compatibility between printers and print servers.  At this point I'm willing to use either wired or wireless print servers--I just want something that works.
EDIT: Even if someone doesn't have a list, if there are print servers that are known to work with lots of printers, at least that would give me better odds of finding one that worked with my 1018.
I suppose the price ceiling I'm looking at is 75 bucks or so, as that would be the difference betwen (a) buying a new HP 1505n  and (b) ebaying off my 1018. So if its much more than 75, I think I'd be better off just getting the 1505n.

  • RADIUS or TACACS Server Recommendations

Can anyone point to a good, inexpensive RADIUS or TACACS server solution that runs on Windows?  Cisco ACS is a bit more money than is wanted to part with at the moment.
Thanks in advance.  All replies rated.

I guess that is a case only with W2K3STD where number of radius/aaa clients are limited to 50 only.
NPS provides different functionality depending on the edition of Windows Server 2008 that you install:
Windows Server 2008 Enterprise and Windows Server 2008 Datacenter. These server editions include NPS. With NPS in Windows Server 2008 Enterprise and Windows Server 2008 Datacenter, you can configure an unlimited number of RADIUS clients and remote RADIUS server groups. In addition, you can configure a group of RADIUS clients by specifying an IP address range.
Windows Server 2008 Standard. This server edition includes NPS. With NPS in Windows Server 2008 Standard, you can configure a maximum of 50 RADIUS clients and a maximum of two remote RADIUS server groups. You can define a RADIUS client by using a fully qualified domain name or an IP address, but you cannot define groups of RADIUS clients by specifying an IP address range. If the fully qualified domain name of a RADIUS client resolves to multiple IP addresses, the NPS server uses the first IP address returned in the Domain Name System (DNS) query.

  • Ftp server recommendations?

  • Any Out-Of-Band Console server recommended?

Yes, I know this is an old post, but I’m trying to clean them up.
Did you solve this problem, if so what was the solution?
It is unclear to me if this  is a AMT problem or a CM12 problem but I want to say it is a AMT problem and as such you will get a better answer in the Intel forums.

  • GW Post Office Server Recommendation ...

    Hi everyone,
Need to decide on a new server platform for our primary Post Office, currently running GW 8 on NetWare but will move to Linux with this new hardware (bare metal install of SLES 11 sp2 with OES for NSS filesystem). Have the following choices:
    Option A - HP Proliant DL380 G6, Qty 1-2.8GHz QC Xeon (X5560), 16GB RAM, Qty 4 600GB 15K SAS (raid 5), 512MB RAID cache
    or
    Option B - HP Proliant DL380 G6, Qty 2-2.5GHz QC Xeon (E5540), 16GB RAM, Qty 4 600GB 15K SAS (raid 5), 512MB RAID cache
As you can see, the only real difference is in the CPUs with one unit providing 4 cores but higher clock speed and the second unit providing 8 cores but slower clock speed. Now, given that a GW PO is disk intensive, I am wondering whether the CPU options here really make that much difference. And, is 8 cores overkill in this situation? Any thoughts? Thanks.

We are running our 3700 mailbox setup on a G7 version of this. You want more cores. Things like document conversion, webaccess, gwia, ... all can use additional cores. You neglected to mention the scale of your setup and what other agents you will be using.
Raid 5 = REALLY BAD. For that array, it can take days to rebuild, your disk performance will be horrendous, impacting service, and meanwhile if another drive fails you are hosed. Get more smaller disks and use RAID 1. A larger write cache on the controller is helpful. More memory is helpful. But it would be useful to know how big your setup is.
( Depending on how critical performance is, placing OFUSER and OFMSG on SSD will greatly increase performance as well as prevent the "rot" caused by fragmentation of the databases that occurs over time. We have about 1TB of e-mail, and about 100GB of databases. So a pair of 128 / 256 GB enterprise SSD will do it. Wear leveling and predictive on the HP will heep you out of any of the hypothetical troubles you may hear rumors bout when using SSD. )

  • Directory Server recommendations (NIS to LDAP)

I'm starting out looking into migrating our NIS database to LDAP using Sun Directory Server.
We currently use NIS primarily for authentication and Unix account information.
I've installed Sun Java System Directory Server 5.2.4 on a Solaris 10 machine (is this different than iPlanet or whatever is installed by default -- idsconfig)?
I'm trying to figure out which is the best way to tackle the migration. I haven't yet stumbled across any tools for automatically importing NIS stuff into my LDAP directory yet, but I suppose some 3rd party scripts exists.
Beyond that, I see reference to a Gateway (rpc.nisd) that can be used to ferry NIS+ requests to an LDAP backend. See http://www.phptr.com/articles/article.asp?p=101621&seqNum=2&rl=1. My question is, does this work only with NIS+ or would it work with NIS as well?
Any other tips and/or best practices would be appreciated. There's a lot of documentation out there, but for various versions of the directory server with just enough differences to confuse me. :)
    TIA.

I have done this migration a couple of times now and the best thing to do is just write a perl script to grab all of the nis data out of the mappings files and then have the script create a ldif file with all the correct attributes. The script is not that hard to create and once done you can just import all your users right into ldap via the ldif file.

  • E-mail address for server

After trusting the promise of Apple that installing and running a Mavericks Server is easy as pie, I bought and installed the server, i.e. just managed to install a folder named "Locker" in adherence to the instructions. Everything else seems "foolproof" - meaning that only fools should believe such promises.
My next step planned is to install the calendar service because currently it makes me mad to run calenders on each computer in my network. Trying so, I manage to perform only a single step: The software requires a mail address for the server, recommends this : com.apple.calendarserver@mactheknife as the address and rejects it immediately. Stop! (Note: I have installed and run Mac networks since the days of Appletalk in 1987.)
I appreciate the great help by the server. But I need to know what I need to do. As easy as pie - may be, but no idea why I should do what. Plase help …

Your question is probably better off in the OS X Server section. And I don't know much about this, but shouldn't that address look like something as [email protected]?
