Server services won't upgrade successfully

Greetings,
I am attempting to upgrade an intel XServe from 10.5.8 to 10.6. I have attemped a few different processes to achieve a successful result. The issue is that not all the services are upgrading successfully. Initially I cloned the 10.5 system to the 2nd internal drive and attempted an upgrade -- failed. Secondly I attempted a clean install and migration from the 1st drive and again attempted migration from a time machine backup -- failed and failed. In each instance the iChat service and Web services failed to upgrade and only a limited number of groups and users were migrated (the system has 77 users and 21 groups in addition to the built-ins). The system contains 2 dual-core processors, 4gb memory, 2 internal drives and a fibre channel card to an XServe RAID.
Any suggestions?

I have never had success upgrading a server. There are just enough changes with each version that it usually ends up not working or hobbled by some mysterious corruption. Really the surest and most reliable solution is to do a manual setup and importation. Not a pleasant prospect in the short run, but the best bet for happiness in the long haul.
Export the users, groups, and computer groups from the Workgroup Manager (not computers unless you do not bind them to the domain), exporting the settings of your server in Server Admin (File->Export->Service Settings) as references only (consider screen shots if you prefer)!  Set up the new server from scratch, adding each service manually as needed matching the settings from the 10.5 server as appropriate.
Set up all your shares again, etc so they are identical to the way they were in the old server.
In Workgroup Manager import the users, then groups, computers (if you don't bind them to the domain) and computer groups.
Since this process does not include user passwords, you will need to select all users (except the diradmin) and enter a default password. Then require a password change at next login under Advanced->Options... in Workgroup manager. If you are not using OpenDirectory, then I cannot speak to user password management issues.

  • SQL Server Service won't start on SQL Server 2008

    Hi everyone,
I'm having trouble starting SQL Server service after stopping and starting the service. Before this happened, I created a Stored Procedure for marking all tables at once along with a maintenance plan for differential backup on all my databases based on the
    recommendation from this link, http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms253070.aspx.
When I realized that the differential backup failed with some databases displaying (Restoring...) post-fix to the database name, I decided to stop SQL Server service and start it up. That is when I won't be able to start the service again.
Is there a fix for starting the SQL Server service? Any help is very much appreciated.
    Additional information:
    - With administrator permission granted.
    - Service Pack 1 for SQL Server 2008 installed.
    - Using default database instance.
    - Tried C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.....\Binn>net start MSSQLSERVER /T3608 ( return msg: System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied.
    - When I start SQL Server service, I keep getting this dialog msg:
"Windowns could not start the SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 1814."
The event log does not explain or provide any hint on how to fix the problem.

  • Error 1069 - Server Service won't start

I'm getting the following erro message when I try to start Central Pro Server:
Could not start the Adobe Central Output Server Service on local computer.
Error 1069 The Service did not start due to logon failure.
I checked the services and it won't allow me to start this manually... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

From the text error as well as the inability to manually start the server I'd suspect that the user-id or password defined on the Log On tab is incorrect. If you are on a Windows network don't forget that if you are using a Domain user-id that the domain name has to be included (DOMAIN\user-id).

  • WDS Server Service won't start - 'An error occurred trying to start the Windows Deployment Services Server.'

I'm having issues installing starting the WDS server service on Win 2008 R2,  this is happening on multiple (all 2008 R2) systems on this domain so I'm beginning to think it's either AD or network related, in event viewer I get the following error.

It seems I've found out the solution myself,  the issue seems to be caused when DHCP and WDS are on the same server, The installation must identify this during the first installation of WDS but not on subsequent installations, the method to
    get it working again is:
    1.
    Install WDS Role (using defaults)
    2.
    Make the following registry change:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\WDSServer\Providers\WDSPXE\UseDhcpPorts  =  0
    3.
Run the following command line to initialize Windows Deployment Services:
    wdsutil /initialize-server /reminst:D:\RemoteInstall
    4.
Run the following command to enable the DHCP port registry setting
    wdsutil /Set-Server /UseDHCPPorts:No /DHCPOption60:Yes

  • Upgraded to 10.5 server from 10.4 but Server Admin won't upgrade Apache 2

I am attempting to upgrade an Intel XServe from Mac OS X Server 10.4 to 10.5. Everything goes perfect with all services and setting restored. However, when I attempt to use the Apache upgrade option in Server Admin to switch to Apache 2, it fails with the error:
"The server reported the error: 'CANNOTTRANSLATEERR' while processing a command of type: 'setApacheMode'"
The server itself is a modest set-up. It is essentially a private web server running only ftp, http, mail, a firewall, and about 20 users. I am also hosting two of the domains on https with certs.
I figured this has something to do with translating the Apache 1.3 config files. I am working on development machine with a clone of the server so I have been trying everything I can think of or find on the net to cure this but have had no luck. I have searched several Mac-centric forums and have found nothing.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, I did try 127.0.0.1 as well as the OS given domain ddeweb.local and even localhost. But no luck. In addition, I also tried various things with the config files in /etc/apache2 up to and including complete replacement of the entire /etc/apache2 directory with one from a clean 10.5 server install. That didn't even work.
The other thing I tried in an attempt to rule out the virtual host files was to disable all but the default host config which was refreshed with the default config. Still didn't work.
As for the output from in the terminal app:
Oddly enough the serveradmin command produced nothing. It just came back with the prompt.

  • Server Services won't re-start (unkown error)

I have an installation of 10.4.11 server with a recurring problem. After a period of time (usually months, sometimes weeks) various services such as FTP or WEB will quit and not restart.
I am flummoxed as to how to troubleshoot this problem. The error reported is (unknown error) with instruction to report this 'unknown error' to the server admin. This happens repeatedly and the only solution I have found is just rebuilding the install from the ground up each time this happens which is a very time-consuming process.
    Suggestions welcome.

  • Microsoft Forefront Server Protection Eventing Service won't start?

    Hi Guys,
When Forefront Protection for Exchange was integrated/enabled on our SBS 2008 server, Microsoft Forefront Server Protection Eventing Service won’t start. Even when we try to start it manually we are getting this message (see attached). During this attempt,
we got these events in the event viewer. In this case, in order to have our email working, we have to temporarily disable Forefront. Any suggestion how to fix this? Please advise.

    Hi Arnel,
Based on error messages, it indicates a log file (inc.log) has become corrupted. Please restore the log file
from a backup copy, and then check if this issue can be solved. For more details, please refer to the following article.

    Hope this helps.

  • MSCS SQL Server Service Pack Installation

    Dear All,
We are using Microsoft Cluster and i completed Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Installation on Cluster.
Now when i am trying to Install Service Pack 2 of SQL Server i can't get success when both node are running.
But when i swhiched off Node 2 and did installation on Node 1 i get success.
But after finishing Installation on Service Pack 2 i can't get that service pack on Node 2.
Here i want to confirm that i have to do installation of Service Pack 2 on both node ?
    Regards,
    Nikunj Thaker.

    Hi,
Have you run the SQL 2K5 SP2 upgrade on the other node. What happens is that you upgrade the SQL Server binaries on the Clustered instances but not the local files.
If you run SP2 on the "Passive" node it will upgrade server compoments that are not cluster aware (like SSIS). I normally upgrade the Client Components first on the passive node, reboot and then upgrade all components on the active node afterwards.
On a standalone machine - all components are upgraded at the same time - both per instance and the server components so you won't have that issue.

  • Password service won't start

Following an unplanned hard restart of our server (Mac OS X 10.9.5, Server 3.2.2), the password service won't start, so our staff can't log into mail, calendars or file sharing.

I have backups (both Time Machine and clones of the hard drive) that I could use to restore the corrupted bit of the configuration, if necessary, but I don't know what to restore.

Many Open Directory problems can be resolved by taking the following steps. Test after each one, and back up all data before making any changes.
    1. The OD master must have a static IP address on the local network, not a dynamic address. It must not be connected to the same network with more than one interface; e.g., Ethernet and Wi-Fi.
    2. You must have a working DNS service, and the server's hostname must match its fully-qualified domain name. To confirm, select the server by name in the sidebar of the Server application window, then select the Overview tab. Click the Edit button on the Host Name line. On the Accessing your Server sheet, Domain Name should be selected. Change the Host Name, if necessary. The server must have at least a three-level name (e.g. "server.yourdomain.com"), and the name must not be in the ".local" top-level domain, which is reserved for Bonjour.
    3. The primary DNS server used by the server must be itself, unless you're using another server for internal DNS. The only DNS server set on the clients should be the internal one, which they should get from DHCP if applicable.
    4. If you have accounts with network home directories, make sure the URL's are correct in the user settings. A return status of 45 from the authorizationhost daemon in the log may mean that the URL for mounting the home directory was not updated after a change in the hostname.
    5. Only if you're still running Mavericks server, follow these instructions to rebuild the Kerberos configuration on the server.
    6. If you use authenticated binding, check the validity of the master's certificate. The common name must match the hostname and domain name. Deselecting and then reselecting the certificate in Server.app has been reported to have an effect in some cases. Otherwise delete all certificates and create new ones.
    7. Unbind and then rebind the clients in the Users & Groups preference pane. Use the fully-qualified domain name of the master.
    8. Reboot the master and the clients.
    9. Don't log in to the server with a network user's account.
    10. Disable any internal firewalls in use, including third-party "security" software.
    11. If you've created any replica servers, delete them.
    12. If OD has only recently stopped working when it was working before, you may be able to restore it from the automatic backup in /var/db/backups, or from a Time Machine snapshot of that backup.
    13. As a last resort, export all OD users. In the Open Directory pane of Server, delete the OD server. Then recreate it and import the users. Ensure that the UID's are in the 1001+ range.
If you get this far without solving the problem, then you'll need to examine the logs in the Open Directory section of the log list in the Server app, and also the system log on the clients.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your response.
From the error description, you need to manually remove the ECP with IIS manager in both the Default Web Site and the Exchange Back End firstly. And then continue the upgrade to check the result.
Hope this can be helpful to you.

  • FAS ESP 5.3 Service Pack 5 Upgrade Issue

    Hi,
My FAST ESP 5.3  is still SP3.  I have patched Dev and Stage environment with service pack 5 with no issues.
I started with FAST ESP 5.3 Service Pack 5 upgrade for my Production Server today. I am getting below error while installation started in production. Any idea on this issue ? Any pointers to resolve this will help.

    Hi Ankur,
Are you still seeing this issue?  If so, the error “Could not find installed bytes on host”
    can
    occur when installing/patchingto
a slow SAN or when a firewall blocks needed ports on the nodes.  Do you know there is a volume used by ESP, which resides on a slow SAN?
Also, can you verify that there is no firewall or port blocking software
blocking ports 13000-17000 and 27000-27009 (the latter is used for the License Server by default, documented in the ESP configuration guide page 191)?  We have seen
this error resolved in other environments by fixing an incorrectly configured firewall.  If there are firewalls or other port blocking software between the nodes, would it be an option to disable them and retry?
Other recommendations we make in the ESP Best Practices Guide:
          -     Verify that the system temp location has 2GB available. This will ensure that the installer has enough space to expand the install packages.
Verify that the hosts file contains IP, FQDN and HOSTNAME.
Include the fully qualified host name before the short entry in the hosts file. For example:
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
    80.91.35.43 myserver.example.com server
        -     Verify forward and reverse nslookup resolution.
Forward: nslookup <FQDN> should return <IP>
Reverse: nslookup <IP> should return <FQDN>
The ESP installation user also needs Administrator privileges. You will need local or domain admin privileges to perform the install.
When checking the fastinstall.log, do you happen to see an ErrorCode 11 when trying to copy the license file?
I ask as I have seen that error occur, in conjunction with the “Could not find installed bytes on host” error.
If so, one can work around this issue by performing a manually copy this license file into your %fastsearch%\etc directory, or if this directory does not
exist, manually create it and then copy the file.
Another possible cause is the JAVA_HOME being set incorrectly.  This could affect the successful copying of the license file. The JDK  installation is a product requirement separate from the is:javahome parameter setting. The Installation guide
states that the Java Development Kit (JDK) must be pre-installed.
Can you let us know the exact version of java JDK that you are running?
Let us know your findings and if you have any questions.
    Thanks!

  • SharePoint 2010 - SQL Server Service Application Server Appears on Server without SSRS Installed

I have SSRS instance installed on Server 2 in integrated mode and reports within SharePoint are working as expected.  But, when you go to manage the SQL Server Service Application it throws an 503 error and I believe it is related to the fact that the
service also shows up on another Application Server, Server1, that does not have SSRS installed.  The service is disabled and it shows up in the list of Services for the server but I believe SharePoint thinks its the primary service and cannot access
it.  Is there any way to remove the Service from Server2?  I attempted the below powershell commands to remove but it gives me an error.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You're getting a Service Instance object and trying to remove it with a Service Application cmdlet... This won't quite work :)  Can you double check to validate that SSRS 2008 R2 or higher bits were not accidentally laid down on the problem host?
