Server shutdown during night: yes or no?

Hi all
We always have the discussion about this topic. Why should the costumers not shut down the server during night to save power (energy)?
I always say, that every "Power On" can damage the power supply or so.
And they are cron jobs during night.
What do you think?
Thanks
Tobias

Hi trueman17-
I suppose this somewhat falls under the age-old discussion of "leave it on or shut it off."
However, in this case, if this is an actual server hardware platform it was designed to be used 24X7 and switching it on and off would not be usual. You are correct that most cron jobs are scheduled to run in the wee hours.
If customer is hosting any web pages with the server than those would not be available when off.
My guess is that this question will come up more frequently with thoughts of conserving energy being in the forefront. This would ultimately come down to customer preference, but I'd lean heavily towards leaving it on.

  • Why does Labview Server shutdown during TestStand execution

    Greetings All,
         Please forgive me if this question should've been posted on the TestStand side.
         What would cause the Labview Adapter Server to shutdown?  I've noticed that each time I click the Test UUT's (green execution arrow) button that during the analysis part before the client actually brings up the serial numbers screen, the Labview Adapter Server initializes.  The task bar would always show TestStand 2010 and Labview 2010 (Getting Started screen).  We are running a batch sequence that is monitoring four (4) uut's during an ESS profile and performing various testing at three (3) different temperature levels.  The process is kind of lengthy (2-1/2 days).  From what I could see the test was in a loop, as usual, waiting for a response from the thermal chambers internal relays which tell the TestStand program that the chamber has begun to move to the next temperature.  I notice that there was an ERROR displayed on the side of one of the batch sequences which was reading one of the PXI-6509 inputs.  I took a screen capture at that point before doing anything further.  I didn't notice it at first but looking at the screen capture again I noticed that Labview was missing from the task bar.
         I am wondering what could have caused this and if there is anything to prevent this from bitting me again.  This client sequence was running well for two (2) days and this happened with less than 12 hours of testing to go.  Thank you for any information that you provide with regards to this question.
    Regards,
    Scott

    Hi snowpunter,
         Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.
         Unfortunately there are too many users that think too much and close things before my team has a chance to look at the failure when it happens.  There is a remote possibility that someone closed the Labview application by accident.  There are many times that the Labview screen pops up in front of the TestStand screen while the sequence running and someone closed out Labview because they couldn't see the execution.
         It doesn't appear that there are multiple threads trying to access the PXI-6509.  The contractor that did most of the programming utilized a lot of Batch Synchronizations to prevent this kind of thing from happening, not that it isn't possible.
         I'm wondering if there is a way to disable the operator from shutting down Labview, whether by the RED "X" in the top right corner or Menu-File_Close.  If so, How would I accomplish this?  Thanks in advance for any reply you have to offer.
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • Database doesn't shutdown during shutting down the server

    Dear Friends ,
    I have to use the following dcript to use Auto startup and shutdown my Oracle Database in RHEL 4 .
    step 1:
    #!/bin/bash
    # chkconfig: 345 99 10
    # description: Oracle auto start-stop script.
    # Set ORACLE_HOME to be equivalent to the $ORACLE_HOME
    # from which you wish to execute dbstart and dbshut;
    # Set ORACLE_OWNER to the user id of the owner of the
    # Oracle database in ORACLE_HOME.
    ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1
    ORACLE_OWNER=oracle
    if [ ! -f $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbstart ]
    then
    echo "Oracle startup: cannot start"
    exit
    fi
    case "$1" in
    'start')
    # Start the Oracle databases:
    # The following command assumes that the oracle login
    # will not prompt the user for any values
    su - $ORACLE_OWNER -c "$ORACLE_HOME/bin/lsnrctl start"
    su - $ORACLE_OWNER -c $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbstart
    'stop')
    # Stop the Oracle databases:

    /etc/rc.d/init.d/dbora
    And also ,
    chmod 750 /etc/init.d/dbora
    chkconfig --level 345 dbora on
    Check following links are there
    # ln -s /etc/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/K01dbora
    # ln -s /etc/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S99dbora
    # ln -s /etc/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/K01dbora
    # ln -s /etc/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S99dbora

  • Is it better to leave your macbook pro in sleep mode during the night or have it shutdown all night?

    Is it better to leave your macbook pro in sleep mode during the night or have it shutdown all night?

    During sleep, your MacBook consumes a little part of the battery, so it won't harm leaving it in sleep mode. Also, you will be able to start using it quickly, as you don't need to wait until Mac OS X turns on.
    I only recommend you to turn off the MacBook if you are not going to use it for days in order to save battery, but apart from that, you don't need to turn it off

  • How to Deel with CIF integration modles during SCM server shutdown

    Hi
    How to handle CIF integration model during SCM server shutdown , whether to keep it as (in R/3)  active mode or change to inactive mode?
    Any ideas or experience sharing around this topic would be great !
    Thanks

    Hi,
    This depends on which IM you are using. The most imp IM to be deactivated is IM for ATP Check. If this is kept active, then Sales order confirmation will be searched in APO - which will not be available.
    All other IMs for master data and other transaction data are not required to be deactivated.
    However, once your APO system is up, make sure that you Re-initialize all IMs (except IM for Location) in sequence, using transaction RIMODINI. Rather than reactivation, this transaction deletes transaction data and re initializes. Thus both systems will be in sync.

  • [svn:bz-trunk] 5034: Avoid the NPE during server shutdown.

    Avoid the NPE during server shutdown.
    Modified Paths:
    blazeds/trunk/modules/core/src/flex/messaging/factories/JavaFactory.java

    I am modifying the correct httpd.conf file on the server, it just doesn't seem to work. - If I put the rewrite rules in the <Directory /> the rewrite works but it adds /Library/WebServer/Documents to the URL.
    I also tried putting the rewrite rules in <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> but that did not work either.
    mod_rewrite is enabled and running on the server.
    I will post the rewrite rules again in the code brackets. Sorry for the long post. - If some one can try them out on their Leopard Server to see if they can get them to work, it would be much appreciated. Again, these work on my Leopard Client but I can't get them to work on Server.
    -- The httpd.conf file posted above is just the default conf file found in /private/etc/apache2/

    I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with 1T hdd 8GB Ram and ran Maverick without problem...Yosemite installation has me completely frozen, nothing works but the spinning ball...I had to force shutdown last night, and haven't turned it on again...what do you advise?  During installation emptied cache, etc. Backed up using time machine, fortunately.

    Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
    Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
                because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
    Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
                because it is three times faster than wireless.

    Get ‘500 Internal Server Error’ during SIP INVITE - cause 44
    Have you ever seen anything like this before?  It usually works, but intermittently, we see calls get rejected.  It somehow seems related to high loads on the router.  We reduced the occurrences by changing our code to throttle the number of SIP INVITEs we send, but this doesn’t scale well.  Once it occurs, the only way to clean it up is to do a shut/no shut on the voice-port associated to SIP INVITE.
    Any suggestions on how we can proceed to debug this issue?

    Since it appears you are a Cisco Employee, my recommendation is that you use the many internal resource available to you (including, but not limited to) , like TAC access, internal forums, team leaders, etc.
    This not to give the casual reader, the impression that the best source of support at Cisco is a customer's public forum.

    Hi Frank,
    Thanks for your inputs.
    Yes. We have jsp:include tags in jspx pages. We do not have any regions. These include tags are embedded within f:subview. We have something like this.
    <jsp:root xmlns:jsp="http://java.sun.com/JSP/Page" version="2.1"
    xmlns:c="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core"
    xmlns:f="http://java.sun.com/jsf/core"
    xmlns:af="http://xmlns.oracle.com/adf/faces/rich"
    xmlns:drmc="/drmComp">
    <f:view>
    <af:document>
    <af:form>
    <f:subview id="svPopupNodeDetail">
    <jsp:include page="/popupNodeDetail.jsff"/>
    </f:subview>
    </af:form>
    </af:document>
    </f:view>

  • Sending JMS on server shutdown.

    Hi, All.
    I need to send JMS notification on server shutdown.
    But before I can do anything, Weblogic (8.1) on graceful
    shutdown suspends JMS server (other services too) and any
    of my listeners can't send messages.
    That is what I tried to do:
    1. Send it from servlet destroy(). Failed, because
    of there are no destinations at this moment.
    2. Send it from ApplicationLifecycleListener.preStop()
    implementation. Failed, because of preStop wasn't called
    (BTW, it is a feature or bug?).
    3. Send it from main method of shutdown listener
    (<shutdown-listener> of weblogic-application.xml). Failed.
    There are no exceptions, no errors, but also there are no
    messages.
    Two questions:
    1. Is it possible to configure Weblogic for suspending
    JMS server after calling application listeners?
    2. Is it possible to do something on shutdown before
    shutdown is really started?
    On every "yes" I have to ask: how? :)
    Thank you.
    Best regards,
    Sergey Kryzhanovsky.

    Sergey,
    Have you tried sending the JMS message from a shutdown class?
    At least on 7.0 it looks from the server log that the shutdown classes
    are invoked before the JMS server is stopped so it might work.
    Also it might be a good idea to delay returning from your shutdown class
    to allow consumers of the message enough time to consume it, as
    otherwise the JMS server might keep the message but the consumers will
    never get a chance to consume it because of the shutdown.
    HTH,
    Dejan

  • What is the best way to conserve energy during night time hours?

    Hello.  Is it best to put the iMac into Sleep mode or Shutdown mode during night time hours in order to conserve energy?  Thanks for any guidance on this.  I normally just put it to Sleep but wonder if this is the best way?  Thanks.

    Visit:
    Apple - Environment - Reports
    Here are the figures for a new iMac 21.5 inch:
    It could be argued that if everyone in the world with an iMac saved the 0.93 W (1.36 - 0.43) by turning the iMac off rather than sleeping it, there would be a big saving. But if an individual wanted to save energy, a better approach would be to turn a light bulb off or turn the heating down by a degree.
