Server slow in the network

Hi boys and girls.
I have a little problem. My server (router, ftp, http etc.) is realy slow when Im connecting within my network to it. If I connect to it with ftp I only get a speed at around 20kb/s, and thats in the same network, not over internet! Same thing with ssh, and so on.
Whats the problem?
Im using vsftpd 2.0.3, openssh 4.2pl, Arch's kernel 2.6.13, and a iptablesscript called firewall-jay (dont think that makes any difference).
And no, I have no real load on it, so that should matter either. I have tried using different computers with different os's and diffrent ftp-clients.
Please ask if you need more information.
EDIT
Something I forgot to mention and mentioned in my second post, from the internet I get around 2MB/s (~20mbps), with that computer acting as a router. That makes it even wierder in my eyes.
And I can also add that I can find nothing that is worth mentioning in dmesg.

if you want to post a tcpdump, have it write out in pcap format, so people can look at it in ethereal
tcpdump -w tcpdump.dump
no idea why it would be slow sometimes..and not others.. nutty
Iptables: http://gigabit.nu/~biio/iptables.txt
I'll edit this post later today with tcpdump, when I'm home again.
EDIT
Now I'm back home.
Started downloading a file from my server (20kb/s this time), and started tcpdump in about a minute, here you go:
http://gigabit.nu/~biio/tcpdump.dump
EDIT2
Could a broken nic result in this things? In my opinion it should be problem with both internet and lan then? I changed nic to eth1 (that's the one my sisters computer is on usualy). And now my computers get a decent speed.
I'll wait for some people to coment my iptables and tcpdump before trying to buy a new NIC (I need one anyway...)

  • HP Laserjet M1132 MFP is too slow over the network!

    Hi,
My HP Laserjet M1132 MFP is too slow over the network!
I have connect the printer to a windows XP 32bit SP3 using UBS port. The printer works fine on the local computer but when sharing it over the network it works too slow, for example with print test page it takes about 45 seconds to print and for other documents it takes much longer time.
I have installed the latest driver form HP website and upgrade the firmware it the latest version.
It happens on other Windows XP machines as well.
I connected the printer to my laptop (Windows 7 64bit) and it works fine (No delays over the network) and it seems that this problem have some relations with the windows XP Driver.
I have used local port trick on remote machines (instead of regular method) like this:
    ''add a local printer;
    'new port'
    'localport'
    \\XPcomputer\HPPrinterName as port name
    but still nothing!
There is nothing wrong with the network, we use to use a Samsung printer on the same machines over the network with no problem.
    I Really appreciate your HELP!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

BEHZAD_T, how is the printer connected to the network (wireless or Ethernet)? If it is slow wirelessly, I would suggest trying to connect the printer to your router with the Ethernet cord and install it to the networked computer that way.
Another question is, relatively speaking, how close to your router are the Samsung printer and the HP printer? Depending on the distance (and what stands between the devices) there can be a lag between sending a print job and it being received by the printer.
    Let me know!

  • Cannot remote into server from outside the network

I have two laptops that all I want is to have them able to VPN to my server.  When the laptops are on my network, they are able to network in and see the server.   But when I go to Starbucks or McD's, I can connect to their network but I cannot VPN into my server.  I am getting a message that LT2?? - VPN, of course I cannot remember exactly what the message said but, it does not work.  I have changed the ports on the time capsule to 80, 1723 and something that is 4500.  As you can tell I am NO expert but would like to understand what I am doing wrong.
I have CenturyLink and a time capsule that I have to pass through just to get to the server.  What else am I missing?

    Good advice from ebrind
    I'll add to it:
    - what IP address does your time capsule have?
If your CenturyLink provides NAT and your Time Capsule is also setup for NAT, you will need to reconfigure either the TC or the CenturyLink to bridge mode and set the port forwarding in the device providing NAT.
    - do you see any activity in the VPN Log?
    - Your VPN server address which you set in your laptop should be the public address of your network, not the LAN address
    - If you do make a successful VPN connection, don't expect to see the server like you do when you are on the LAN. If the LAN address of your server is 10.1.10.2, you'll need to connect to:   afp://10.1.10.2  (after a successful VPN connection)
    - Lastly, do you need VPN? If you just need access to your files from the server, you can do this without VPN. Depending on your security requirements, you can simply map port 548 and access with:  afp://[public-ip]   or use webdav with SSL.

  • Unknown PC server "connected" to the network

I have a weird problem. I've got one iMac and one MB Pro connected to my wireless network. On the iMac I've just today started getting a PC server showing up under "shared" in the sidebar in Finder. When i try to connect, it says that the connection fails. However, on another device I've got connected to the TV that can play movies and sounds over the network, the same device appears in the "workgroup" when I log in there. When I turn off the iMac, however, that device disappears as well. Somehow, it seems my iMac is running some kind of virtual PC server that I can't connect to..?
I'm getting really frustrated about this, because it seems to me to be a virus, but it's not possible to trace it. I'd appreciate any insights into this that the community can provide.

    Hello guys,
More than likely you have nothing to worry about!
There are all kinds of devices that could be showing up on the sidebar of your Finder... Your DVR or cell phone might even show up there if they are connected to your network (wired or wireless).
There are several ways to go about finding out what the secret unknown device is...
    1. Check your network for attached devices
Physically look at what is connected to your network by seeing what is plugged into your router or modem.
    2. Check your router for DHCP clients
Your router will have some sort of configuration page that you can check from your computer. This will tell you what is attached and communicating with your network wired or wirelessly.
The DHCP client list shows what devices are getting IP addresses automatically (if assigned manually, they will likely not show up here). The instructions for this are different (but not too different) from router to router. Common brands for routers include Netgear, Linksys, and Apple.
On an Apple Airport wired and wireless DHCP "clients" are listed separately to find the wired ones go to Advanced > Logging & SNMP > Logs and Statistics > DHCP Clients and to find the wireless ones, look under AirPort > Summary > Wireless Clients. For another brand, you'll have to Google it.
    3. Run a Serious Network Scan with Nmap/Zenmap
This is almost overkill for trying to find out what is on the sidebar of your Finder - but, nmap is an the best utility for network scanning. It can be downloaded from:
    http://nmap.org/download.html#macosx
It comes with a graphical interface called Zenmap and a command line tool. Personally, I prefer the command line version but they both work the same. Zenmap does require X11.
Either way, you can scan your network if you know the IP address of your own computer while it is connected.
If you need to find your IP address - you can find this by EITHER opening a terminal and typing ifconfig OR by going to System Preferences > Network then choosing your Airport or Ethernet (whichever is connected) and looking for your IP address. It should be in the format ###.###.###.### - common IP subnets include 192.168.1.###, 192.168.0.###, and 10.0.1.### - when you've found your IP address, you can now do an nmap/Zenmap scan for all IPs within your subnet. Not only will this tell you what network devices are attached, but also it will try to detect what type of device and what operating system is being used.
To find ALL the devices attached to your network, you will have to search the entire range of your subnet - the subnet is the first three groupings of your IP address. For my computer's IP 192.168.1.5 this would be 192.168.1 and since the minimum address for an IP is 1 and the max is 255, I will be searching in the range 192.168.1.1-255 (if my IP was 10.0.1.101 or 10.0.1.5 then I would search 10.0.1.1-255).
If I'm using Zenmap I will make my target 192.168.1.1-255 and I will choose Quick scan from the profile - just to get an idea of what IPs are in use. 10 seconds later - Presto! A list of all the devices attached to my network.
Feel free to upload the list here and let me take a look if you have any trouble reading it yourself.
You can also do a scan by entering the following into the Command field of Zenmap or by running this in the Terminal (please adjust your subnet accordingly):
    nmap -O -sA 192.168.1.1-255
This will attempt to get more information out of the attached devices, such as, what operating system they may be running.
Start with that and post back here to let me know what you find.

  • MY IMAC don't see the main server and all the network! I didn't nothing on his system, but since some days it is out of network on my company. And what is curious is that others computers can see mine. Some one can help me??

My IMAC lost the network, it can be seen but cannot see! What I have to do?

    You're welcome.
Voicemail is left at your carrier's server. That will continue to work unless you report your iPhone as lost or stolen with your carrier.
You may never find it again and you can't if the iPhone remains offline or out of service which means the iPhone is powered off or doesn't have cellular reception.

  • Slow on the network?

Anyone have any thoughts on this problem?
I have a new workstation connected to an existing Windows network. Everything seems to work just fine... except Bridge, which takes about a minute to access any folders on other computers attached to the network. Bridge works fine on folders on my computer--and the Windows navigation tools work fine on the other network computers... just Bridge + the network is the problem. And a frustrating one on deadline! Ha!
I have tried all the obvious fixes (that I can uncover on the forums, anyway...) and am wondering if anyone has any experience troubleshooting this kind of issue.
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Hi...
I'm testing Bridge as a video asset browser on our network and I'm seeing similar behavior.
I've developed a work flow to create low bandwidth proxies of source media and I'm on a 1.0 gig pipeline, so bandwidth is not the issue.
I have also background cached all the thumbnails prior to browsing tests. In my case I have also pushed the cache file out to the folders.
In using Bridge, it seems there is a huge lag from the time I make the request to preview a source to the time Bridge actually access the network.
During this lag, the application goes into "Not Responding Status" (Windows Task manger).
Once it starts to access the network, I will get access to the material in quick batches, then the connection will time out again, and the application will become non responsive.
I have the option in my case to mount the drive as a local volume or a network volume. Most everyone on my SAN will be able to do the same, but some clients are attached only via ethernet.
I'll see if behavior as local drives is better.
Help! I want to believe this can work, but I won't deploy it unless I can generate consistent and reliable performance. :)
    Alex

  • Server processes across the network are running slow?

We have several processes which should be quick and simple and at the longest take 24hours to apply. We have a database running on a SQL server with an Access front end that is taking far too long on Fresh Build PCs to update. Sophos which is assigned by group policy to each PC once in the appropriate OU hasn't deployed and a distribution group took approximately 4-5 days to appear in the Global Address List.
The Global Address list did eventually update but even after a week the Database update and Sophos install have not yet gone through. Any help would be greatly appreciated as it has massively slowed my PC distribution process. The distribution group went through Exchange, Sophos is on Windows Server 2008 R2 and the Database is on an SQL server on Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacentre.

    Hi,
in case you are starting the ThinInstaller.exe application from network share "\\server\share\ThinInstaller.exe" then this is unfortunatelly currently not supported.
I do understand, that this is described in the PDF, but the designer was thinking far way ahead, and once this situation came, that it should be tested, then TI could not work correctly when started from network share.
So in this case there is only one solution and this is to copy the ThinInstaller application and files to local system and let the Repository on the netowrk share and use it this way.
I have tried in the past to convince some people to get this changed, but I was told, that this should be implemented into ThinInstaller soon
Hope this helps a bit, althouth it's not a fix.
    Cheers

  • Why are my MacBooks so slow on the network when everything else is fast?

Last month, my apartment complex changed its network from a pretty wide open Wi-Fi to one where we must enter a user name and password every 30 days for each machine.  Since then, both my MacBooks (2012 MBP running 10.8.3 and 2008 white MB running 10.7.5) have very slow connections.  Web pages will fail to load, or load incredibly slowly (as in the progress bar moves an inch then stops).  We get bursts of activity (as also seen in Activity Monitor) lasting for seconds (limited to 4mbps down/0.2mbps up by the new ISP).  This occurs on both Safari and Firefox.  iTunes music store, the Mac App store, Mail, and Spotify all exhibit identical behavior.  My iPad, iPhone, and another's Windows netbook connect without any obvious difficulty.  We had a rep from the new ISP come to check out our connection, and he believes that the problem is directly related to the MacBooks (a virus on both?).
Things I've tried without change in behavior (with the 2012 MBP):
    1.  Connecting directly to ethernet (and turning off AirPort).
    2.  Restarting the computer and the router.
    3.  Logging in elsewhere in the complex
    4.  Changing DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
    5.  Deleting AirPort and re-installing in System Prefs
    6.  Following the excellent "Step by Step to Fix Your Mac" https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3353 on these forums, including clearing every cache imaginable with Onyx, and uninstalling Java, Silverlight, Flash, and any System Pref plugins.
    7.  Sorting through Activity Monitor to find anything else running on my CPU of consquence--I don't think so.
    8.  Confirming good ping and down/up speeds on Speedtest.net with my iPhone
I know little about networking, but I'm learning.  Any other suggestions?  Why does the MacBook behave differently on this network?

    bowsplash wrote:
Thank you for the suggestions.  I agree that my ISP rep looked a little confused by my problem.  He was comfortable using Terminal (at least for basic network queries--more than I know how to do).
Although I physically have the ISP's router in my apartment, the ISP has changed the password, and I'm unable to change channels (though that shouldn't explain the peristent problem on ethernet).  I've tried restarting it many times, including unplugging it.
I just emptied my trash (and restarted the computer).  500gb HD, 24gb free. No change in performance.
You're running out of HD space.  That's the problem.
Empty the trash in the Dock as well as iPhoto’s trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps.  Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need.  Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).  Or transfer/move them all to a photo/movie storage site like ImageShack and Photobucket, 2 of the most popular  FREE  storage sites.
Get rid of all your video & music files you no longer view and/or listen too.  Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.  Or transfer them all to a FREE video/movies and/or music storage site.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything.  You can even trash directly from Spotlight!  Better yet, download this FREE software called Find File.  This app puts Spotlight to shame (works w/Mountain Lion).
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash.  Better yet, download this neat little shareware app *demo* called AppZapper.  It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete.  Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs. Not everyone has the  luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or the system requirements for iCloud to store their "stuff.”
Dropbox is a free storage utility to check out.
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer *free* storage space.  Most if not all do now-a-days.   There are thousands if not millions of *free* storage facilities on the web also.  Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + *click* to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts.  Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke.  It does all the work for you.  And, best of all it’s *FREE*.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your *current* printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored.  Get rid of some some them.  You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a *FREE* utility called Monolingual.  Another app that apparently does all the work for you.  I’ve never used it.  However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

  • Why is my ibook so slow on the network?

It seems that when I use Wifi with certain public networks some of them are much slower than others. But the speed issues are only felt on my ibook but not on the PC. For example there is one public library around my area that I can access with my ibook. It seems to take FOREVER to access FTP (either with OSX Fetch or Transmit 1.7 (which runs in Classic). It also seems that websites are rather slow. But the problem and why the IT people will not listen to me, is that I am usually the only person in the entire library that is using a Mac. Everyone else is using Windows and even I have used Windows and these problems are non existant on the PC. Why is this?
Any of my FTP servers that I try to access on my ibook takes days to load, and most wbsites are very slow. But this is only a problem on the ibook and not on the PC's.
You may think I have a configuration problem but think again after you hear that when I get in my car and drive some 15-20 minutes away to another library and access their Wifi network my ibook works just fine!
    This is very strange.
    Thanks for any tips.
    John

The library probably just has their network misconfigured. They got it working on Windows and don't care about the Mac. It is definitely the library's problem, not your Macs. You won't be able to fix it.
This is uncommon, but not unheard of. I had an interview at Microsoft once. I couldn't get my iBook to work with the Wifi (or hard-wired!) network at the hotel across the street. I even called up tech support. They had the netmask completely wrong. It only works on Windows because Windows doesn't conform to networking standards. For some reason, the hotel that Microsoft puts all the interviewees in doesn't work with Macs. Go figure. I didn't get the job. Maybe because I took a Mac to an interview at Microsoft. Hey, I have my priorities!

  • I have a 1st generation time capsule and an extreme b/g. Is the extreme slowing the network down

I have a 1st generation time capsule and an appe extreme b/g. Is the extreme slowing the network down? Should I dump it an get the new n version?

yes it is likely to be slowing down the network because you are using 802.11b/g
from what i recall with b/g a slow client can slow down the entire network to that clients speed.
this was the major improvement with 802.11n and Mimo. each client can be connected to the access point without affecting your speed to the rest of the network
its reccomended to get all new "N" equipment if you have the budget for it. some of those old airports and time capsules can still be worth something on amazon marketplace so you might be able to sell them
if you want to create / join / extend a netwowrk your going to probably need all "n" based equipment.
buy the new 4th generation time capsule or the new 5th generation airport they have better stronger radios
in the mean time configure your base station router to a high multicast rate, so it will prevent devices connecting to it at 1-2 mbps speeds and slowing down your network
if you have an apple care covered mac remember the airport / time capsule rule. all airports and time capsules purchased 2 years before you bought your mac to the 3 years of apple care covers them. if you do not have apple care then the standard warranty applies

  • CS3 slow over local network

    I'm on a MacBook Pro 2.33GHZ Core 2 Duo w/2GB RAM.
Websites are shared from a Windows XP machine using normal
    built in file sharing.
In Dreamweaver CS3, opening a document takes a while. And
once it's open and everything looks good, I can click on an image
and count out 2 seconds before the image actually highlights. Click
on another image or in a table cell to type text, and it's another
    two seconds.
This site website, copied to my own hard drive, responds as
fast as it should - near instant.
The website and images aren't large by any means, 43k with
HTML, images, and css. It seems weird that it'd be slower over the
network than locally. Once Dreamweaver has the document open and
everything loaded, just selecting different elements shouldn't take
    a performance hit.
I didn't have this problem with Dreamweaver 8.
Anyone else having this issue? Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Ryan

  • ITunes could not connect to the iTunes store. The network conect timed out

I am having trouble with iTunes,
Message: "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store. The network conection timed out. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active then try again."
Im not sure when exactlt this happend, it may have been after i downloaded an iTunes update, but I cant be sure. Other than that nothing else has really changed. I have now had this problem for a couple of weeks.
I am running windows Vista (32 bit System)on my HP Laptop and have ADSL and am able to run explorer and all other non-apple software.
I have tried all other advice offerd in the various supports:
    1. re-installed iTunes
    2. Checked all firewall settings - even removed Norton security (currently just operating on windows Visat security and have checked all that)
    3. changed "host" file to "back-host"
    4. played around and tested various internet settings
I hope this information helps to solve the problem. I have also recently found some other information which may be useful:
Although I do not use "safari" as an internet explorer, this does not work on my system either. I have re-installed this to see if it helps but am still unable to connect to the apple store (home page) on safari. I have looked up the support site for safari but have thus far be unable to find any helpful information to solve the problem.
Please help this is very frustrating...
    Many thanks in advance!
