Server solution without spending a fortune

didn't really know where to post this:
currently i am mis-using an iMac G5 as a server AND work station. all company data is on an iMac and all other macs access data over a router. that works fine but if you delete something over the network it doesn't land in the wastebasket- it's gone forever. that means someone can very easily (accidentally oder deliberately) delete files or the entire database! that's not good.
inspite of our company's "success" i still can't afford spending thousands on a mac server and server software. my idea is to purchase a used or refurbished power mac (for example) and server software. i think we could get both for under 2.000euro. i would then mis-use the powermac as a server but not use it as a workstation.
before i spend all that money, i would like to know if it will solve my problem or will it be the same as it is now. when i ask technicians or informatiker, they say, "should work, but i'm not really sure."
can anybody offer me some help on this one? is there a relatively inexpensive solution?

No problem on the response. That is why we are here.
For the purpose of sloshing files around, an XServer would indeed be overkill as would the XServe software.
Mirroring will only protect your stuff sitting on the original drive and usually within the same machine. What if that one machine is destroyed by a catastrophic event like fire or flood or employee tampering? Big time bummer-all your work just went buh-bye with it.
Your backup strategy must be robust and you must adhere strictly to it and include at minimum one weekly backup stored securely off-site. External USB, FW400 and/or FW800 drives are good options as you can have three daily backups rotating off-site. Number 1 sits next to the machine and is today's work. Number 2 is locked in a safe nearby. And number 3 is secured completely off-site as in your home safe or in a bank vault.
My original file storage system, or "server", recently retired because of space constraints only, is still my sweetest. I was able to stuff about 7 or 8 hard drives into an 800MhZ G4 tower and had 1TB of online storage. It is still not a bad option as EIDE drives are, as we say here in New England, "wicked cheap" these days and stocking up on a few spares will not break the bank.
Why is it that you don't give each user their own private folder on the "serving" Mac? Make them smart folders and back them up every 15 minutes or so to an external drive. Not completely idiot-proof but certainly a step in the right direction. If they share files do the same with a shared folder. Same effect.
Definitely don't invest in the server haardware and/or software unless you absolutely need it now or seriously project needing the services in the very near future.

  • Best server solution without spending thousands

didn't really know where to post this:
i am an american (agency owner) living in germany. we have two restaurants in würzburg. we receive many compliments for our menus, ads, posters, flyers, etc. after a while, our competitors asked us if we would do menus, websites, etc. for them. we thought "why not?".
i went out and got an office, a few macs, some software, some designers, a business license, etc. and we now have 64 clients in bavaria.
i say all that to make clear that i am neither an it-technician nor a designer. i am a restaurant-man. i never worked on a mac before, but i thought- if we're gonna do this, do it right. it's gotta be mac.

Hi, I have the same computer, same model and same problem with the same diagnosis, with no response from Apple for being out of warranty of 4 years, this is a shame!

  • What is the best iMac setup without spending a fortune?

Okay so I am looking to purchase a new iMac. I do a little video editing and a decent amount of photo editing and music editing. I will probably do some gaming also, but I know most of the hardware upgrades don't really affect the gaming ability. So here is my question. I want to get a 27" iMac, and I'm wondering what are the best upgrades for the money? I want the best performing system possible without spending too much money. Basically, what system setup (Ghz, RAM, drive type/size, i5 vs i7, etc) will give me the most noticeable difference in performance. I don't want to invest $200 more for i7, $200 more for bigger RAM, etc if there is only going to be a very minor performance improvment. I hope this all make sense, and ANYBODY's help is MUCH appreciated!!! Thanks guys!!!!

I would say any of the 27" iMacs would be a great solution. If you tend to keep computers for 4-5 years then it's wise to invest in the most power iMac today. In 4 years you will have a 18, 16, 15 and a 11 year old and you can be sure their interests will change. In that case I'd probably opt for the i7 CTO iMac with a 2TB HD. Do not buy additional RAM from Apple, buy that from reputable vendors such as OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial. Upgrading RAM is incredibly simple taking less than 10 minutes to do. I would upgrade the RAM to 12 or 16GB. I would stay with the base graphics card and consider getting the SSD option which will enhance speed.
If your habits are to keep computer for 1-2 years and then recycle them then either of then I'd probably opt for the base 27" iMac with the same HD noted above and RAM recommendations.

  • I'm having an issue with songs cutting off before finishing and jumping to the next one. Even on my old ipod where there were never any problems before. They play fine on my computer? how can I fix this without spending a fortune replacing all these songs

I got this new Ipod for christmas,& I started importing songs before it was fully charged. I thought thast caused the problem till I added new songs to the old one. Then it started doing the same thing. The old one never had this problem. Even one of the new songs I just bought stops 15 seconds in then jumps to the next song. I can't afford to replace them all.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
      - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Can dw cs3 connect directly to sql server database without a testing server?

I'm new to dreamweaver but have used script tools that link
directly to my sql server database.
Not in dw, so far. As of this early stage, I don't have or
want to use a web server, and it's blocking me
without one. I just want to prototype without a testing
server, directly to my database. And while I'll try php
later, I didn't want to have to get into it or cold fusion,
    etc. right away.
Can dw connect directly to sql server database without a
    testing server?
I'm running XP sp 3 at this point, and don't see IIS. There's
    probably some security issues
I'll have to tangle with. The goal is for my website to end
up on the company intRAnet, not the www.
fwiw, I can Build in Data Link Properties and get a
successful test to my sql server database via
Microsoft Data Link, but once I go back and try the test in
OLE DB Connection it balks on the testing server,
as I don't have one locally or otherwise. Isn't there a way
to link to db without a testing server?
    Thanks for any insights.

Yes, you can. However, Dreamweaver's PHP server behaviors
    work only with
MySQL. To connect to any other database, you need to hand
    code
    everything yourself.

  • I still have unspent balance in my iTunes account, how can I switch to location without spending the remaining balance?

can anyone help me change my country from USA to Philippines without spending my remaining balance? I still have $0.35 left. Please help me.

You can't change country with a balance - if you can't spend it then you can try contacting iTunes support and ask if they can remove the balance for you : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

    Nevermind, I got it working.
I ended up extracting the new vob within MPEG Streamclip, which gave me an m2v and an aiff audio. I multiplexed those two back together in FFMpegX which gave me a complete VIDEO_TS folder with BUP and IFO files I needed.

  • How can I convert my Tiger DVD into a CD without spending more money?

How can I convert my Tiger DVD into a CD without spending more money and time? I've spent over seven hours trying to upgrade an iMac 350 Hz OS 9.1 to Tiger. I have changed the iMac firmware to 4.1.9, but found that my Panther disc was only an OSX Upgrade, although the 3 cds are labeled as Installation Discs. Since I have a Tiger disc I thought I would use that. Unfortunately, my iMac only reads CDs, not DVDs. I tried networking the iMac to my G5, but upon shutdown, the OSX disc cannot be accessed. I copied the DVD files to my iMac hard drive, but again, the OSX disc cannot be accessed after shutdown.
Is there a way I can burn a CD from the files of my Tiger DVD to get this task accomplished?

Excuse me, but I never thought of that, nor did I have any intention of trying to rip off your company.
I purchased four iPods for my family this Christmas. I have six iMacs just sitting around not being used. I thought that I would turn one into an iPod work station, so everyone can use one computer to recharge and hook up to iTunes 7.
Unfortunately, iTunes does not work very well in OS9. Apple decided not to continue to support OS9 very well. I’ve spent several hours attempting to upgrade the iMac so I could set up iTunes 7. Unfortunately, my 3 Panther Installation Discs were mislabeled, and did not allow me to install OSX over OS9. My OSX 10.2.7 Installation Disc is a DVD, and my Tiger Installation disc is a DVD. Neither usable to update the iMac.
All I want to do is set up a dumb iMac as a network interface to my G5 because I've use all of the G5's ports for our recording studio and the iPods need external power source if they are plugged directly into the G5.
If you could show me an easier way to run iTunes 7 on the iMac I wouldn't be as ****** off as I am at Apple for not supporting the 9 older computers I own with usable help and upgrades.

I just bought apple tv......trying to use homeshare-computer won't cooperate.....have 2 i pads, 2 iphones and can not get my macbook pro-(10.5.8) to update to snow leopard (10.6) which is what seems will make homesharing work between all these apple products. It looks like I have to buy some software to update the computer. Anyone else have this issue or suggestions or even know what I am talking about?? try to update software to snow leopard and it won't allow me to...this is an old macbook pro  but I paid almost $3000 for this computer a long time ago...find it hard to believe that I can't update without spending a million dollars??? thanks.  Mary

    Welcome to the Apple community.
I'm not entirely sure I follow you here, home sharing comes with iTunes 10.2, so far as I am aware even iTunes 10.6.1 only requires OS X 10.5.8 or better. On that basis I'm not sure why you think you have a problem.

  • Booting Weblogic server 6 without supplying password

Is there a way to start a weblogic 6 server without supplying the
system password using -Dweblogic.management.password=? I want to be
able to start the server automatically without being prompted for a
password or exposing the password in a script. I tried futzing with
    acl.boot.weblogic.server in fileRealm.properties, but that didn't seem
    to do the trick. Thanks,

    [email protected]

There are multiple ways to start WLS without being prompted for the
    password:
    1.) Use the password.ini file
2.) Use the weblogic.management.password System property.
a.) Use the -D option to specify it on the command line. If you don't
want to put the password in clear text in the script, modify the script to
read it from another location (which might be encrypted).
b.) Write a small Java program that looks up the password from
someplace that you feel is secure and then do this:
    String myPassword = ...
    System.setProperty("weblogic.management.password", myPassword);
    weblogic.Server.main(args);
    Hope this helps,

  • VPN Server solution other than Leopard Server?

    All,
Does anyone know of any VPN server solutions for Mac OS X other than the basic one included in Leopard Server?
    Regards,
    Ken

I use the one that comes with Leopard as well as VPNClient from Cisco. I have to use the Cisco one for one connection which requires we use this client.
You can do a search here - just plug in the search term "VPN" and you'll get a whole bunch of them.

  • HT1417 why have all my downloaded songs stored in i cloud shown twice on the main music menu all of a sudden? how do i get the space back, without spending hours deleting copies ?

why are all my download items duplicated in i cloud all of a sudden? how do i get the space back so i can re-synch muy i pod classic without spending hours deleting ?

Why? A glitch. The second copies are links to your purchases in the cloud and are not taking up any room. Sign out of the store and they should disappear. Sign back in again and they should stay gone.

  • Multi-server Environment without Windows Domain

    Hi,
Has anyone had experience with installing SAP BPC in a multi- server environment without using Microsoft Active Directory as a domain. (ie just using local users for everything).
Do we need to create a domain in order in successfully install and use the BPC? If that is the case, which server is best suited to install the domain on?
    Many thanks

    Hi,
Do you have at least a domain for hosting your servers ? Without an administrative domain for computer and technical accounts I doubt you could even make BPC work in a multi-servers environment.
If you don't have a domain for your users, you may (but i will never recommend it), create all your users localy. But you will have to create them on all BPC servers with same name / same password. Password adminisration will be a real mess as you will have to change the password on all machine each time the user want to change it. And this will not be done by the end-user but by IT staff. Also, users will not be able to use Windows Integrated Authentication functionnality.
So basically, yes use a domain for computer and users. The most easy architecture is to use a single domain for both computer and users.
If you have to install a Windows AD, I would take a look at Microsoft white paper and KB. But I think that you have to dedicate at least 1 machine for it (best is to have 2 servers for fault tolerance).
