Server Specs for Virtual Environment

Interesting. I'll read those later after I finish the agenda for a meeting I'm having tomorrow. I've ran FreeNAS and Nexentastor in several scenarios over the years and have NEVER had a failure.
Then you've not run into the scenario that makes them risky. :) It's not that they fail "more", it is that they add no value over other options (like FreeBSD) but add some risk or cost (Nexentastor is not cheap at all.)
If no other products existed, they would be fine. The issue is that slightly better, otherwise identical products exist making the NAS OS product type never make sense to deploy.
For example, if FreeBSD itself didn't exist,...

Why VMware, this seems like an odd choice today. Why three hosts (this might be an obvious capacity need, but should be checked.)Why HA? Have you done the groundwork for this? HA should be an extremely rare need. This is a red flag not because it is impossible but because it is so unlikely. HA is ruled out as a need due to the SAN. So something is certainly wrong in this case. The two can't go together at this scale.
SAN is, of course, out of the question with only three hosts and of course cannot exists with HA.

  • Server Specs for SLES and GW 12

I need to look into a new server to put SLES and GroupWise 2012 on it. I am having trouble finding server specs for this, so I was hoping to get a little advice. GW will be the only thing on this box, one PO with about 150 users. Hoping to build something or purchase something that isn't too expensive due to budget restraints.
    Thanks

I work for a small non profit organization and we only have one server, never found the need for virtualized servers.

If this is going to be a dedicated physical setup (you are not planning
to run GroupWise on a virtualised server) you should not need a big
budget to find a decent server for those 150 users.
IMO, a dual core CPU with 4 GB of RAM would seem quite sufficient in
this case. Getting a proper disk controller (with a true hardware raid
handling if you are looking for a raid setup) & decent disks that can
handle the I/O required is important too.
The A brand entry level servers that I've seen easily meat this
requirement. Do make sure it's suitable for 64bit.
In any case, GroupWise 2012 has about the same requirements version 8
    would demand.
I'm curious, you are not already virtualising servers?

  • Server Specs for a 11.1.1.3 Install Important questions.

I've put together some specifications for a Development Server & Production Server, any comments appreciated. I hope this post acts as a good reference sample for anybody else out there looking to implement a Hyperion Planning.
    Client Tier: (2 developers)
    Windows
    8 GB RAM
    Dual Core Processor
Components: EAS client, Smart View, Excel Add-in
    Web Tier:
    HTTP Web and J2EE Servers:
Windows + (not sure which version would be best here, any ideas appreciated)+
    Processor: 4 x 3 GHZ, 64 bit
    RAM: 8GB
    Hard Drive: 32 GB
Components: Foundation: HSS, Workspace, Planning, Web Applications: EAS, Financial Reporting, Web Analysis, Planning,
    Services Tier:
    Server1:
    Windows (2003 SP1, R2)
    Processor: 4 x 3 GHZ 64 bit
    RAM: 16 GB
    Disk: 32GB
    Components: Essbase Server 64 bit
    Server2:
    Windows (2003, SP1 R2)
    Processor: 2 x3 Ghz
    RAM: 8GB
    Hard Drive: 32GB
Components: Reporting & analysis, Financial Reporting Print Services, ODI
    Server 3:
    Windows (2003, SP1 R2)
    Processor: 2 x3 Ghz 64 bit
    RAM: 8GB
    Hard Drive: 32GB
    Components: FDM
    Database Tier:
    4 x 3 GHZ - 8 GB RAM
    DISK: 100GB RDBMS
    200GB Essbase Storage
The specifications will be similar for the production for abotu 25 - 30 users (10 concurrent), with RAM being a little bumped up.
One important question: I might need guidance on installing 32 bit planning or FDM on the 64 bit server - any known issues with this? Also any known issues with 64 bit Essbase working with 32 bit Planning?
Edited by: EssbaseApprentice on Sep 30, 2010 10:04 AM

obviously its hard to comment on whether it is the perfect spec for your environment, it looks alright to me, it is not under spec.
For the web tier as you are running reporting and analysis and the other machines are windows based personally I would stick with windows 2003.
Is there any reason why you have one machine dedicated just to FDM, seems a bit of an overkill just for one product, it may be worth combining services server 2 with FDM, just a suggestion though

  • Setting up OSX server in a virtual environment

I am looking into setting up OSX server in a virtual environment where the hardware will not be an Apple product. Can this be acccomplished

With the release of OS X 10.10, are there any plans to update the license agreement so that Apple's new version of the OS X Server software can be run on non-Apple-branded hardware? It seems that Apple is willing to change the license agreement between 10.4 and 10.5, so why not change it between 10.9 and 10.10, especially since the OS X client software 10.10 is available as a free download through the App Store, and the OS X Server software is available for $20 through the App Store? It also makes sense to open the software sales market to non-Apple-branded hardware users, unless Apple really is feeling skittish about the professional marketable quality of its newer model computers like the 2014 Mac Pro towards server hosting provider companies. They are using comparable Intel Xeon E5 processors, but not making any effort to market that computer to web hosting providers, and they are certainly not getting their foot in the door by withholding the potential of their OS X Server software by allowing it only to be run on Apple-branded hardware. If Apple gets their foot in the door with server software, they will be in a market for selling their OS X Server software AND their Mac Pro line of server-similar hardware FIVE-FOLD by directly competing with Microsoft's IIS, Linux software developers, AMD hardware developers, and other server hardware and software developers. Intel should be PRODDING Apple to get into the server market, and offering OS X Server for a measly $20 to non-Apple-branded hardware users would essentially STEAL their customers away from them, vastly growing the Apple domain.
If Apple does not want us to be making OS X Server applications, however, then by all means, they should simply discontinue the OS X Server software, because with the current license restriction of only being able to use the OS X Server software on Apple-branded hardware, in tandem with Apple's complete ignorance of the server market with their hardware which is using server-quality Intel Xeon E5 processors, Apple sitting in the water like an immobile swan among the Internet Server market is just plain dumb. I mean, Apple wants to make money, don't they? Or are they just fooling around with the consumer market, pretending like OS X Server running on a Mac Mini is something that Web Hosting Providers would take a second look at? MARKET YOUR MAC PRO LINE TO WEB HOSTING PROVIDERS AND LET OS X SERVER SOFTWARE RUN ON NON-APPLE-BRANDED HARDWARE ALREADY! STOP FOOLING AROUND HERE. APPLE SHOULD BE PARTNERING UP WITH VMWARE IN THIS ENDEAVOR; THEY HAVE MADE IT DIRT....SIMPLE.... TO ENTER THE SERVER MARKET THROUGH VMWARE ESXI.
my gosh, even a caveman can do it
    why isn't Apple doing it

  • E Business Suite 11i Server Spec for Linux?

Does anyone know, or can suggest possibilities, of a server spec for 11i on Linux. This is for a small company installation of 11i.
Where can I go to ansewer questions like this?
What Linux distributions are supported for 11i?
I was thinking of multiple CPU's, highpoint raid controllers to give RAID 0+1, and 1 or 2 Gb of memory.
    thanks
    Dave Darrall.

    Jimmy,
Our E-business suite 11i has been running on the application tiers RHEL 4, due to the requirement to support large memory configurations on a 32-bit system.  Is it true that from RHEL 5, the “hugemem” kernel which achieves this 32-bit memory scalability has been deprecated in favour of the use of 64-bit kernels?
Your 11i application tier will be limited to 32-bit even if you install 32-bit OS on x86-64 hardware.
Our Oracle 11g database is running on RedHat Linux 5.8. Is E-Business suite 11i (application tiers) certified to run on RHEL 5.8?
    Yes.
Also for future planning, is E-Business suite 12 (application tiers) certified to run on which versions of RedHat?

  • Server Specs for crystal reports server

    Hi,
I am a prospect Crystal Reports Server customer. I am looking to find out Server Specs for a typical 10 CAL Crystal Reports Server deployment. The information for minimum spec seems to be widely available but not for a Spec for good performance.
    Thanks in Advance

My recommendation is to work with an SAP pre-sales consultant who will be able to provide "truer to life" guidelines on RAS sizing.  Generally, you're looking to accommodate ~ 30-60 concurrent report events on a single RAS CPU.
Of course, report size (data stored within in, # pages, etc) all get factored into estimating memory requirements and goes back to making use of a pre-sales consultant for this purpose.  Additional factors include deploying a multi-RAS configuration and other layouts to optimize your needs.  They definitely have what you need - it's a matter of reaching out to them.
    Good luck.

  • Best Hardware Server Specs for Wsus to run close to 3000 Clients

I am currently configuring a Wsus server 2012 for my company. I am looking forward to buy a Dell rack server and would like to take your input on what is the best server specs I could go for.
This is documented in the WSUS Deployment Guide
    System Requirements article.
But the *BEST* specs you could go for would be whatever you can afford to buy .... which may also be gross overkill for a 3000-node WSUS server.
Load tests from 2007 are documented in the
WSUS Capacity Requirements article in the WSUS3 SP1 Deployment Guide. In short, for 3,000 clients you need a 1.5GHz vCPU and 2GB RAM.

  • Osx server website for virtualized application

I hope someone can help me.
On my OSX Mavericks server, I have a virtualized tomcat application. There is a Virtualbox instance, running Ubuntu, with bridged network. This means I have a unique IP number for this virtual machine. For tomcat I need to go to port :8080
I do want to set a "subdomain.domain.com" to open this 123.1.1.1:8080.
How do we set this in the webserver part of OSX server? Is this possible?

You will have two sets of DNS servers, your public DNS and the DNS running on your local network.  If your external DNS is getting to your servers, then that's probably working.  If you are getting the public IP address from your local network, then your gateway-router needs to "reflect" that address, or you'll need to configure local DNS services (OS X Server needs that in any case) to provide the local IP address for the public DNS name.
Put another way, read the article cited earlier and make sure your local DNS is correct.  You can test for most of the common network and DNS configuration errors with the following harmless, diagnostic Terminal.app command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
...and this will tell you about the configuration, and whether no changes are required, or about the various errors that might be detected.
You can see what IP address you're getting with the following Terminal.app command:
    dig +short oc.example.com
...or whatever DNS host name you're using.  You'll get either the public IP address (which if you use on the local network, your gateway-router needs to be able to detect that and run the connections back into your network) or your internal local network address.
Your local network clients will want to reference your local DNS server.
Do read the article cited earlier, too.

  • Project Server jobs going to "Waiting to be processed" state after resolving Error:1053 in virtual environment.

    Hi all,
I am using project server 2007 in virtual environment. Before some time, my project server queue service was not starting & it gave Error: 1053. Then server team made some small changes in registry & resolved the problem. After that queue service

In log it is showing "Queue unable to interact with SQL.".

I am not going to really make a judgement on your specs as I don't really think you can do it over a forum it requires much more depth in understanding on how the system would be used.
Though looking at the specs for the essbase server, are you considering storing the data on the local disk, if so I would consider looking at getting more space as you could easily hit that amount if you have a number of large applications on there.
Other than that it looks ok for a number of planning applications, you may have to increase the ram if you are going to have quite a few planning applications running on a 64bit platform and want to include any other products, once again its hard to make judgements and you will probably be fine it is a ok spec.

My organization wants to install Captivate 5 on 2 desktops and publish the courseware to a server that's accesible from our intranet for students.  Does anyone have any server specs for an organization of 2,000 employees that can support mandatory yearly JCAHO and OSHA requirements as well as ongoing training classes for nurses and patients?  Thanks.

a better question would be is it possible to run an executable directly on an html page. i could put my chat program in a directory on geocities, and then run it from there.

Similary is the case with CUIC 8.5. Has anybody worked on these do suggest ideas.

Virtualized UC applications from Cisco are only supported on the UC on UCS platform using ESXi 4.0, 4.0 Update 1, or 4.1 - hypervisor support may vary based on application.

    Thank you.

Thanks guys this has been really helpful.
I got another identical server approved so I was wondering if the following specs will do if LOB applications are installed on the SharePoint Infrastructure in the future.
Virtual Machine 1: Web Server + App Server
    SharePoint Server:
    RAM: 25GB Processor: 64bits. 4-cores  Disk space: 160GB
    Virtual Machine 2:
    SQL
    RAM: 20GB Processor: 64bits,4-cores Disk space: 160GB
Would this be overkilling it or should I just increase the RAM to 25GB on the SharePoint Server and leave the SQL as 16Gb?
Just to give an idea the portal consists of 1 corporate site and about 8 departmental sites which is not the concern as the 16GB for SP and 16 GB would be fine (I would assume). I am however concern if the old specs would be okay when the LOB applications,
workflows, BI are installed in the future.
    Thanks again,
