Server uses 98% CPU capacity

Hi,
I have 6 appplications deployed in the WLS7.0 using TopLink EntityBeans and EJB's.
Sometimes when I raise the server it gets really slow to respond and uses 98%/99%
of the CPU even when it is not processing.
I have the following settings:
set JAVA_VM=-server
set MEM_ARGS=-Xms200m -Xmx320m
Anyone can help understanding what the problem might be?

Whether or not there actually is a problem with Chess isn't the focus of this reply.
Instead, I am addressing your original question concerning the CPU usage. CPU usage for any user apps is indicated in relation to the total of that user's current CPU allocation. In the case of your Chess example, 98% means 98% of your CPU allocation, not the total of actual CPU capacity.
As needed, and as possible, a given user's allocation will change dynamically, but OS X tends to keep a healthy reserve held back for additional processes.
To really see what is occurring, perform your test with Chess again, but this time make sure that the CPU "pane" is showing at the bottom of the Activity Viewer window, and pay attention to the percentage of total CPU allocated to you. Chess's usage (98%?) is a percentage of the percentage given to you. As you will see, your allocation will change over time, but it should not approach 100%. So, Chess is using 98% only of what you are currently given.
Now, while this test is running, open another application. What you should notice is that your CPU allocation will jump, at least temporarily. Also, you should not experience any real "lag" in the response of the new app just because Chess is thinking hard. It is for exactly this reason (among others) that OS X holds that "reserve" CPU potential at almost all times, and this is one of the things that makes OS X such a multi-tasking powerhouse.

Kerne_task and window server uses high CPU percentage

I have a white macbook unibody mid-2010, and the aactivity monitor shows kernel_task and window server using CPU of around 20% at times. Why is it doing this and how can I stop it from using so much? Thanks for any help

I was experiencing something similar, but with windowserver running at over 80% mostly, spiking to 99%. MacBookPro hardly responded anymore.
I investigated windowserver and learned it was "coordinating and handling the display for applications that want to place something on the display" (sure this is technically incorrect; trying to explain in plain English). So there was a good chance it was not windowserver itself, but a calling application being the root cause.
Using Activity Monitor (in Applications - Utilities folder) I listed all active processes and preselected the ones I recognized, and anticipated they would be using graphics more than average. I then started killing them one after the other.
After I killed "BetterTouchTool 0.721", my windowserver went back to normal behavior, and the machine was fast again.
Three last points:
1) BetterTouchTool web-site does NOT say it fully supports Lion yet. I could have checked that so not blaming anyone here but myself.
2) I'm using dual display and I see some references online to BetterTouchTool having some issues with that on Lion still.
3) In your case, any other process can be causing the same symptoms; it does not have to be "BetterTouchTool". Do the trouble-shooting by killing process one after the other and it should quickly tell you which process is the culprit.

CF4.5 uses 100% CPU and hangs

Hello,
According to the ColdFusion Forums my problem is not a new one but I still want
to post it with the hope to get some kind of answer.
I'm are running the following system:
CF 4.5 Enterprise Server
SiteMinder 6.0
IIS 5.0
MS SqlServer 2005
Both the CF and database server are Win2000 SP4.
About every one hours the CF server uses 100% CPU and from than on it is
impossible to log into the application. The site is still available though.
After restarting the CF service everything works fine until.....
I do not know what triggers this but I suspect it has something to do with
SiteMinder and logging onto the application.
The site has to go live on Monday so you can imagine the pressure to get
this fixed before the weekend.

Jilani, you mention that this seems connected to SiteMinder. Do you mean you have your own version of SiteMinder, separate from the built-in one that came with CF 4 and 5? I wonder if there could be a conflict between them. Why are you using the full SiteMinder? And do you really need it?
More curious is that you say this spike happens every hour. Can you confirm if it's every 67 minutes, specifically? If so, then I would assert that this could be a problem related to the client variable purge process, which I discuss here:

But that may not be the issue if simply enabling/disabling the siteminder service will immediately recreate your problem....unless somehow the DB used by SiteMinder is the same DB used for client variables. Do you have any datasources listed in the CF Admin page for client variables? Any chance there's a connection between them and siteminder?

High CPU "% User" after update, but no process using much CPU...

Hi guys,
since I did the recent system or security update for my Macbook, my computer crashes a lot and freezes. The fans run constantly, and the weirdest thing is, that in my Activity Monitor no program is actually using much CPU capacity.
BUT, the usage screen below (wih the red and green squares) is showing that the system is running under full capacity. The cause for that is mentioned next to it the user percentage display "% User" shows values between 50 and 90% or so.
What is causing it, and how can I get rid of it. At the current state I can't even surf the net properly as Firefox and Safari freeze constantly.

Discoveryd process uses 100% CPU - Safari Can't find the server

Hello
Since upgrading to Yosemite, I lose connection to the internet 2 or 3 times a day. (Outlook goes offline at the same time)
This is with a wired connection. (Wi-Fi is turned off)
Safari gives me the "Safari Can't Find the Server" message.
Restarting the computer solves the issue temporarily.
While I'm unable to connect to the internet, Activity Monitor shows a process named "discoveryd" that uses 100% CPU.
Force quitting this process gives me back access to the internet instantly. Unfortunately, I suffered a kernel panic (auto restart) a few minutes after force quitting discoveryd. I'm not 100% sure those 2 are related but it would be an odd coincidence as I never experienced had a single kernel on that system. Haven't tried force quitting that process since.
I'm using this iMac in a work environment. (Connected to a windows file server and exchange)
This issue has been happening 2-3 times a day since the day I upgraded to Yosemite.
Any pointers on what could fix this issue ?

Taking snapshot of oracle tables to sql server using transactional replication is taking a long time

Hi All,
I am trying to replicate around 200 oracle tables onto sql server using transaction replication and it taking a long time i.e the initial snapshot is taking more than 24 hrs and it still going on.
Is there any way to replicate those these tables faster?

According to the description, I know the replication is working fine. But it is very slow.
1. Check the CPU usage on Oracle publisher and SQL Server. This issue may due to slow client processing (Oracle performance) or Network performance issues.
2. Based on SQL Server 2008 Books Online ‘Performance Tuning for Oracle Publishers’ (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms151179(SQL.100).aspx). You can enable the transaction
job set and follow the instructions based on
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms147884(v=sql.100).aspx.
2. You can enable replication agent logging to check the replication behavior. You may follow these steps to collect them:
To enable Distribution Agent verbose logging. Please follow these steps:
a. Open SQL Server Agent on the distribution server.
b. Under Jobs folder, find out the Distribution Agent.
c. Right click the job and choose Properties.
d. Select Steps tap, it should be like this:
e. Click Run agent and click Edit button, add following scripts by the end of scripts in the command box:
-Output C:\Temp\OUTPUTFILE.txt -Outputverboselevel 2
f. Exit the dialogs

Chess uses 98% CPU

Hi
Was just wanting to have a break from work the other day, and ran the chess program for some fun.
I was surprised to see in Activity monitor the "sjeng" process start jumping to 98% activity, my computer temperature rising, fan going on, etc etc.
Is there a bug with this program? Has anyone got the same issue?

Whether or not there actually is a problem with Chess isn't the focus of this reply.
Instead, I am addressing your original question concerning the CPU usage. CPU usage for any user apps is indicated in relation to the total of that user's current CPU allocation. In the case of your Chess example, 98% means 98% of your CPU allocation, not the total of actual CPU capacity.
As needed, and as possible, a given user's allocation will change dynamically, but OS X tends to keep a healthy reserve held back for additional processes.
To really see what is occurring, perform your test with Chess again, but this time make sure that the CPU "pane" is showing at the bottom of the Activity Viewer window, and pay attention to the percentage of total CPU allocated to you. Chess's usage (98%?) is a percentage of the percentage given to you. As you will see, your allocation will change over time, but it should not approach 100%. So, Chess is using 98% only of what you are currently given.
Now, while this test is running, open another application. What you should notice is that your CPU allocation will jump, at least temporarily. Also, you should not experience any real "lag" in the response of the new app just because Chess is thinking hard. It is for exactly this reason (among others) that OS X holds that "reserve" CPU potential at almost all times, and this is one of the things that makes OS X such a multi-tasking powerhouse.

Portal Uses 80% CPU

Hi,
My portal keeps on using 80% CPU and causes the server to be very slow and have to be restarted.
Whenever I log in to the portal page and click on my discoverer portlet there, I always get Page Cannot Be Displayed.
Can somebody help me on this issue, what might cause the problem and how to solve it? Thanks.

Move xorg.conf to another directory (back it up) and try starting X without xorg.conf. X increased cpu usage but not that much (around 2-5%) on C2D 1.8GHz...

It usually takes about 24 hours to get there. It is easily reproducible. "Kill -3" is not leaving a javacore for some reason.
The applications are mostly jsp, and are all over the board. There is a lot of XML parsing, some db connections, and all sorts of other home grown things. However, if the jsp applications were leaking would that not be in the heap?
How would I hunt down these allocations?

EP 6 SR1 - jlaunch.exe using 25% cpu under no load

Hi,
We installed EP SR1 (patches SP9) on virtual machine on MS Virtual Server 2005.
J2EE server (jlaunch.exe process) is using 25% cpu on average without any load (no user interaction).
Response is slow when accessing the portal.
I assume this is not a normal behavior of J2EE engine.
Has anyone else experienced this problem, suggestions on how to resolve it will be appreciated.

[x86_64] nvidia 180.29: kde4 plasma and others use 100% cpu

i have a problem with the latest beta drivers from nvidia (185 series):
plasma uses 100% cpu, when i kill it, krunner uses 100% .. deleted plasma configs and kdm configs but that didnt change a thing..i also switched from kdemod to kde from extra, same problem..
nay idea what else i can try?
do you guys have success with this (propably outstanding) driver and kde4 ?

i was using xorg-server 1.5.3..
after upgrading to 1.6 i can use 180.44.
but still 185.19 + xorg 1.6 does not work here , but the errors were not kde related this time:
dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//nvidia_drv.so: invalid ELF header

Compressor only uses 50% CPU

Whenever I use compressor it only ever uses 50% CPU across all cores. I'm using a MacPro with Dual Quad Core Xeons. There are no other apps running on the box and would like to get my compressing done faster, is there any way?

I've tried all permutations of the methods described in said topic using compressor 3 - And I can't get my 8 processors to go beyond 80% with any configuration of qmaster cluster settings, 2, 4, 8 whatever... it just doesnt work. In fact the fastest encode on the oct for me was without using clusters, just on "local machine"...
I tested a 1 min HDV QT file and ecoded it to SD WS mpeg2 using various settings - it took 23 minutes with 4 clusters (as suggested in posted discussions) - it took 21 minutes with 2 clusters - and it only took 16 minutes with no clusters - local machine and no qmaster server running. That's completely contrary to the "four virtual cluster" method - and at no time did the processors go beyond 80%
In fact, I then tested the same encode on a quad G5 and it only took 7 minutes, and all four processors were at 90% +
So what the heck is going on? How can a quad G5 beat an 8 core Intell on all counts with compressor 3?

Web server consumes high cpu

When user experiences slowness in accessing the iPlanet Portal Server, I realise that the Profile Server hit a cpu of 96% using prstat command in solaris. The process is ns-httpd.
Current version of iPlanet Portal is version 3.0 sp4 hp1. Any idea how to fine tune the web server?

Before you start tuning, you would need the following information ..
1.) What is the number of concurrent sessions on the system at any point of time ?
2.) What is the JVM Max heap size value set ?
3.) Are you using the gateway or is it an open portal ?
4.) size of your desktop, number of channels etc.
5.) What is your hardware configuration, number of cpu's/ram etc ..
6.) have you done any prior performance tuning ?
7.) do you see any potential thread dead logs
when the system slows down do a ps -eLf | grep pid on the process id, it should list details abt the process like the number of threads open and the duration of each thread open and percentage of cpu used by each thread.
mpstat 5 pid should also list cpu usage information inaddition to smtx information.
Atleast you might also wanna run top to determine amount of memory used in addition to just cpu usage.
All these details could potentially tell you whats going on with ur system and you could appropriately tune based on that information.

Could someone please indicates why the D000 process uses 100% cpu while no XDB action seems to be running? Whe are not using shared server (besides the XML DB usage) and the only value for the dispatcher parameter in the init<SID>.ora = (PROTOCOL=TCP) (SERVICE=<SID>XDB).

Stop and start of the listener doesn't solve this problem but killing the unix process will do. When I killed the D000 proces a new dispatcher is started (does pmon do this?) and the current shows 0. This workaround is fine on the DVL machine but no sollution on a production DB :-)

By the way... you just could be unlucky hitting a very rare situation that caused the phenomenon decribed by you. Deamon processes also could arise due too standard JDBC, ODBC or other connection methods. As long as you don't provide Oracle Support with a SR, you will not know if it is actually XDB related or not.
If I would implement XDB functionality in a production system than at least I would:
a) disable automatic memory management by setting SGA parameters manually
b) set the large_pool_size to a appropriate value to support the shared server processes
c) tweak dispatcher and shared server processes to match at least values that represent
   the minimum++ needed processes (= a higher value then needed maximum)
d) set java_pool size to a decent size (250 Mb or higher)
e) set an appropriate PGA setting to support XML fragment handling
f) DISABLE autoregistering database functionality with the listener
   (see amongs others "Registering non-default XMLDB HTTP/WebDAV and FTP ports
   on a non-default Oracle Listener port" - http://www.liberidu.com/blog/?p=116)
g) alter the xdbconfig.xml file with more appropiate timeouts, locking and cache handling.
h) dedicate a specific listener (aka a a listener not called "LISTENER") for shared server
   connection handling (this for management reasons and specific debugging).
i) use version 10.2.0.4.0 or 11.1.0.7.0 for production environments (I know that this
   matches your environment)
j) always enforce that client software matches the database version
   (as in your case 10.2.0.4.0)
k) keep NLS settings on client and database equal and support a AL32UTF characterset
   (IMHO a minimum requirement on the database side)
