Server will not boot up

Received "1d.so.1 malloc failed killed just before my system went down. Booted into single user with the cd, fsck on unstable disk, tried rebooting the system back into multi- user, but it still won't boot up.
Anyone knows what else I should be doing.

What error messages does it give when you boot.

  • OSX 10.6.8 server will Not Boot

Hi my 10.6.8 server will not boot.  System is a 2009 Mac pro.  I have run disk utility from the original server software install disk, ran repair disk, and repair disk permissions.  Get some acl found errors have read that they most often are erroneous, Still got the same errors after permission repairs.  While booting in verbose mode get the following messages before it stops:

I did read on another post here to try to reinstall the os, however when I try to install over the operating system it says I am trying to install an older os and it will not let me install in the same volume....  Although I am confident I have all the data on backups as well have timemachine backups, I would rather not have to erase and install this machine.
Any insight to this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I found that I had a bad harddrive, or at least that is what I think happened..  I did have a time machine backup as well, although in hindsight, I should have made some manual backups of my open directory and the databases hosted on the server.  In any case I ended up purchasing "server grade" harddrives and reinstalling the OS on to the new blank hard drives, I was then able to recover from my time machine backup, however, I did have the issue of the restore going over 100%, I tried this several times and the same result with no end after hours and hours.   After reading through various forums I found that clicking the mouse button for about 10 minutes straight once it hit 100% finally worked, I was lucky that the Time machine backup had good data on it since I have read several posts saying that Time machine doesn;t backup directoies or any "open files" very well, however I had no problems after recovering from the backup.  I do however now backup or archive my directory everyday, and I rely on Filemaker to backup its own databases, however I still use time machine as well...

  • Server will not boot after update !! Help needed fast !!

    I have a new (Aug 2005) XServe G5, running 4.3.
Active Directory integrated, stores home folders (AFP), manages preferences and 5 print queues for 55 Mac OS X.4.3 clients and 200 users.
It downloaded the 4.4 update, unchecked the OS 4.4 update (I think was my first mistake), restarted. Now, at boot up, about the moment the apple would appear (maybe it appears for a split second) all I get is the ugly not sign.
-- Am able to boot to external firewire drive
-- Drive shows as boot option
-- Disk repair reported no problems to fix
-- Can not find any log entries after last shut down. No service ever starts for any entries to be made.
-- Applied the 4.4 update successfully while booted from external fw drive, no effect. Startup disk reports system to be OS X Server 4.4 and lists as a boot option.
-- Drive behaves same when transferred to my G5 tower: big not sign.
What other steps can I do to troubleshoot this boot problem? If I don't get this server up this weekend, I'll get roasted by an angry mob.
Any suggestions are welcomed and greatly appreciated.

    Eeh...
Always clone the existing system prior to updating it. Do so when the server is not in use, shut off services where possible (you want it to be as quiescent as possible).
Mike Bombich (at Apple) describes how you can do this via the command-line, which I prefer for this purpose (you can stagger the process):
    http://www.bombich.com/mactips/image.html
    Now then:
Have you booted from the install CD and used Disk Utility to run Repair Permissions ? That should be your first step.
It may change nothing, but can you boot into Safe mode ? Hold down the Shift key at powerup and keep holding it until you see: "Safe boot"
If you CAN get it booted in that state, then run the 10.4.4 COMBO updater
you need to run the combo updater at this point. After doing so, use Disk Utility to run repair permissions on the boot drive itself, and then reboot.
Otherwise, start it in Target Disk Mode as you did before, connect it to a unit running 10.4.4, and run the /combo/ 10.4.4 Server updator (NOT client, of course) onto the server's mounted hard drive.
I'm not sure you can do this while running 10.4.x client. You may need to do a quick install of 10.4 server (say onto a Firewire drive), boot your spare Mac from it, and -then- mount the server via Firewire target mode, and apply the 10.4.4 server combo updater.
    Good luck !

  • Solaris 10 - system hung, and now will not boot

I have a SunFire V240 with 2 73 SCSI disks running Solaris 10. Only the first disk has been formatted. The box was newly installed last week.
It had 2 zones set up on it and one of them was running a service out of it (called knowledgetree). I came in this morning (monday), and although I could ping the main server and the zone, I could not ssh to the box. I hooked up a console cable to the box, and there was nothing.
I then went to the OK prompt and typed boot.
    It said
    1} ok boot disk2
Boot device: /pci@1c,600000/scsi@2/disk@0,0:a File and args:
    Can't open boot device
    {1} ok
    I then typed
    {1} ok setenv auto-boot? false
    auto-boot? = false
    {1} ok reset-all
    followed by
    {1}ok probe-scsi
    Target 1
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST373207LSUN72G 045A
If I type the following I get the results below.
    {1} ok show-disks
    a) /pci@1c,600000/scsi@2,1/disk
    b) /pci@1c,600000/scsi@2/disk
    c) /pci@1e,600000/ide@d/cdrom
    d) /pci@1e,600000/ide@d/disk
    q) NO SELECTION
Enter Selection, q to quit: a
    /pci@1c,600000/scsi@2,1/disk has been selected.
Type ^Y ( Control-Y ) to insert it in the command line.
    e.g. ok nvalias mydev ^Y
for creating devalias mydev for /pci@1c,600000/scsi@2,1/disk
Does anyone have any ideas on what happened, or what I have to do to get the OS to boot again. I am a bit of a nubie when it comes to Solaris .... I am not sure what happened, or why all of the sudden the server will not boot.
    Thanks for the help
    Peter

Usually you can just do a "boot disk" or "boot disk1"
devalias will show you what actually devices the short alias map too.
It might be a faulty drive bay.
Try pulling it out of one and plugging it into another.
    The do the probe-scsi again.
Then put it back into the first to confirm....

  • CRIO startup directory was typed STARTUP and now will not boot. How do I recover from this error or how do I rename the directory when my proxy server is read only due no startup files?

I loaded files on the cRIO but used upper case letters for the startup directory.  Now I cannot access the RIO since it didn't boot. The proxy server comes up read-only so I can't reload the files or change the directory.  I tried the RS232 port but I can't get it to respond to commands even though I can see the processor boot.

There is NO need to put your entire question into the subject line of your post.

  • Help!  My iPod touch 2G will not boot up!

My iPod touch 2G will not boot.
Heres the specs of the problem:
It turns on with an Apple logo with a spinning wheel under it.
I have tried editing the hosts file with the Apple server codes.
I have tried restoring 16 times. (I log what I do on it)
The iPod has never been jailbroken.
    It is an MC model.
    It is 8GB.
Its formated for Windows. (Windows 7)
    iTunes 10.4
I have tried "The Tiny Umbrella TSS Server with SHSH blobs for iOS 4.1"
    I tried "RecBoot" no luck.
My Mom will kill me if I can't fix this.  I am going on a 9 hour vacation ride with 7 year old brothers that get really cranky.  I leave August 6th, 2011.  So I need to have it fixed before then. So i really, really, really need help!

Try uninstalling iTunes and installing the 10.4 iTunes that came out a few days ago.  Click start, run and paste "%Userprofile%\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates" without quotes.  Find iPod2,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw and delete it.  Try restoring again and Tiny Umbrella is only for iPhones.  Do not use it on iPod Touch or various errors appear.  iPod Touches can downgrade at any time (idk about iOS 5).  If it doesn't work, reply.  :)

  • Airport extreme will not boot with USB hard disk plugged in.

    Hi there,
I'm using the Airport Extreme Base Station, and I find that if I have a USB hard disk plugged into it, it will not boot up, it only hang-ups with an amber light, and stays there indefinitely.  It's not a terrible issue because it can be overcome by unplugging the disk then rebooting, but it's irritating, especially when I'm not home and there is a power temporary outage and my wife can no longer access the internet or I can no longer access my disks over the internet.
Is there a solution to this problem?
    Thanks,
    Marc

I'm going to have to replace the unit, as I'm unable to turn off DHCP services, which is wreaking havoc on my server based environment.
Considering THIS issue *AND* the major DHCP show stopper, frankly, I'm debating etiher the fire pit or tossing the damned thing into the intersection and watching it be reduced to the trash that it is.
Either way, there'll be 7 feet of pack ice in **** before I buy another Apple networking product.
I'll decide later, with a jaundiced eye, regarding our XServe unit. Might reformat it to Linux...

  • Mac mini server - will not take 4GB so-dimm in bank 0

Mac mini server - will not take 4GB so-dimm in bank 0
    Hello,
Memory works ok as long as the old 2gb 1066 so-dimm is in bank 0.
Switching the dimms around is no go. It seems to need that bank 0 populated with an old 2gb.
I can use only one 2gb and one 4gb for the mini server to boot.
It seems to have a hard time figuring out the 2x4gb configuration.
Tried PRAM and NVRAM reset. Always getting 3 beeps.
Any chance of getting the full 8gb detected?

    Hi All,
I had the same problem that you, I had a mac mini server late 2009 with 10.7.3 OS X, with 4 GB of memory.
I have got these two memories on amazon:
    "8Go mémoire - Kit double canal SAMSUNG original 2 x 4 Go 204 broches DDR3-1066 PC3-8500 SO-DIMM (2x M471B5273BH1-CF8) mémoire portable ordinateur DD"
First test to install in the mac mini:
    Slot 0 - 4 GB
    Slot 1 - 4 GB
    3 beeps
    2nd test
    Slot 0 -
    Slot 1 - 4 GB
    OK
    3rd Test:
    Slot 0 - 4 GB
    Slot 1 - 1 GB
    3 beeps
    4th Test:
    1 - 1 GB
    2 - 4 GB
    OK
    5th test:
    reset PMU
    Slot 0 - 4 GB
    Slot 1 - 4 GB
    3 bips
    6th Test:
I did a test of the 2x4 GB in a mac mini 2010
    OK
    7th test:
    Slot 0 - 2 GB
    Slot 1 - 4 GB
    OK
After to read this forum I gave up and I decided to let the mac mini with 6 GB. Well, as I wanted to try it again one last time, I tried to put the slot 0 memory forcing a bit. But I did not noticed nothing special.
Well, at this last time, it works. 8 GB in the mac mini server
    here some screenshots:
I hope this info will help you to resolve this problem. But seriously, I am not giving you nothing else than hope

  • G4 that will not boot from any disc EXCEPT the Apple Hardware Test CD

We have a DP 1ghz Quicksilver PowerMac G4 that will not boot from any disc EXCEPT the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with the machine.
We were in the process of installing 10.4 Tiger before placing it for sale.
The Mac was originally OSX Server 10.1 that we later converted to a worksation running 10.3 Panther.
It has 1 GB of memory, 80GB hardrive, 250MB Zip Drive and a Radeon 7500 video card.
Since this machine only has a CD-R drive and not a DVD-R, we installed Tiger using another Mac via Target Disk Mode. The installation process went well, but when I tried to reboot I got a Kernel Panic right after startup screen with the grey Apple logo.
On some reboots we get to the blue startup screen, others it stops at the grey Apple logo, others a black box like the a Kernel Panic - but with no text. Twice it went directly into Open Firmware.
We have done the following during our troubleshooting:
    - Reseat RAM, Video Card, Hard Drive, Zip & CD-R connections
    - Remove RAM 1 stick at a time and reboot
    - Replace RAM with RAM from another working Quicksilver
    - Replace Video Card with one from another working Quicksilver
    - Zap PRAM
    - Reset CUDA switch
    - Unplug the MAC and remove everything (RAM, Battery, etc) for 30 minutes and try to reboot
    - Tried booting from the Macintosh Server G4 Software Restore CD
    - Tried booting from Mac OS X Server CD
    - Tried booting from AppleCare Protection Plan CD with TechTool
    - Tried booting from Diskwarrior CD
    - Tried booting from an external FireWire drive with a disk image of Tiger OS Install
    - Tried booting with the hard drive disconnected
The Mac WILL boot from the Apple Hardware Test CD and will pass ALL of the extended tests.

Conventional wisdom says that any Mac that will not boot up from a System/Install CD OS 9 or an Install CD Mac OS X, has a Hardware problem.
The diagnostic CD is a red herring because it uses a very primitive method of reading the CD, and so does not properly represent the machines general ability to read CDs.
I would look at the CD drive cables, etc, and see if another drive gives different results.
You have not mentioned using the Startup Manager (option key at Startup) to do any checking:

  • Intel IMac will not boot OSX Tiger

Hi guys, I just wanted to let you know that I am reading and trying to do my home work on why my Intel I-Mac will not boot. It all started after running Windows Vista using Apple Boot Camp. I just wanted to list a few things I have tried after getting replies from posting in some other forums. I will try here since a few people are having similar issues. Any tips would be appreciated. Please no flames
    1. If I hold the C button while booting to boot from CD-ROM I get a panic alert.(panic alert meaning lockup, I have to restart or press and hold power button)
    2. Holding down D button upon startup will run Apple Hardware test just fine, but no errors found.
    3. I can press Option-Command-P-R to reset NVRAM successfully.
    4. I can press Option during startup to start the Startup Manager. I can see my Macintosh Hard Drive and CD-ROM, but get a panic alert if I click on either icon. I’m not sure what happened with the Windows Vista hard drive Icon.
    5. I can press N during startup to start up from a compatible network server. I see a flashing globe and then a panic alert. Not sure what this function is for.
    6. If I press T during startup for Start up in FireWire Target Disk mode, I get a weird symbol that looks like a Y floating around the screen. I have no idea what target disk mode means.
    7. If I press Shift during startup to boot in Safe Boot mode, I get a panic alert.
    8. If I press Command V during startup for Verbose mode, it appears that I am at a Unix style Command Prompt that hangs.
    9. If I press Command S during startup for Single-User mode, I am at the Unix Command prompt which works, but I do not know any commands except fsck –fy which I guess is like a DOS CHKDSK command that tells me my Volume appears OK.
    10. Pressing Option-N during startup to start from a NetBoot server using the default boot image gives me the flashing globe icon again, and then hangs.
    11. I tried resetting the System Management Unit thanks to the Unix forum guys, but still have the same problems.
    12. My next step is to find a Mac friend to burn the Firmware Restoration CD file I downloaded thanks to Michael from the Unix forum. If that does not work I will try whatever you ask.
    13. I can boot my I-Mac using a Linux Live CD called Slax and surf the net and play with the software. It runs just great; I just don’t think this 200MB version has the capabilities to format the hard drive or Install to hard disk like Fedora Live does. By the way, the Fedora Live version of Linux hangs after booting from the CD. It boots just fine on my PC.

    Greetings,
Somehow or other you will need to be able to boot to the Installation Disk #1 that came with your computer - as you know they are specific to each machine model. After a successful boot to that disk, you can use Disk Utility to remove all of the partitions, wipe that puppy clean, then repartition and make sure you use the GUID partition scheme - you really only need the Bootcamp Assistant if you have multiple drives, internally, and since you have an iMac, your good to go.
When you booted to your Linux disk, could you see the internal hard disk? If so you should be able to open one or two of the folders just to be sure that the disk is OK.
A worst case scenario would be to have to install a fresh hard drive. Do you have any way of borrowing another install DVD for that model to try to get it to boot? That's the key to this whole project.
Try this - Go back into single user mode and issue these two commands in this order:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
Watch the spaces and then issue a "reboot" at the prompt.
During this, the fans will likely come on at a high speed and may stay on for a while and maybe until you do a shutdown and reboot.
I hope this helps a little, and once you get the machine booting to the Installation Disk #1, again, you'll be all set.
You don't say, but is this unit under warranty - I know it may be a stupid question on my part, but if it is, give them (Apple) a call and get some advice on the waranty actions.
    Good Luck my friend.
    Cheers,
    M.

  • Xserve will not boot up, all lights flash rapidly

Just bought a lightly used Intel Xserve.  This unit was in a business that failed, and was set up, but never used.  Was powered off and unplugged for approximately 18 months.  When we tried to plug it up to check it out & configure it, we noticed the following:
System will not post and won't boot
Hard drives do not appear to spin
CD Drive appears to have no power - will not grab disk
All fans do work, and run on high RPM
All lights on back of server and front of server, as well as next to SDRAM slots, and on back of main board flash / flicker (regular quick flashes, no pattern evident).  The only light that does NOT come on at all is the light next to the power button.
Anyone heard of a similar condition?  Is this server toast?
    Thanks,
    Rob Hogan

I'm sorry to say I don't have a solution, but I can commiserate.
I have a G5 and two G4's, and so far within a few days / couple of weeks of getting them home and getting them up and running, they seem to fail.
    Usually spectacularily.
The G5 operates very much as yours in that power on, fans rev high, and no post or other activity; I don't get any system light status action however other than flashing. I've replaced CPU's and logic board on this.
The single CPU G4's does much the same, but this I've had up and running and then it went down when I upgraded the memory to max (very careful to make sure it was within Apple spec's), and despite swappinbg the original memory back in,nothing.
My latest, a dual core G4, was bought in working order, and I upgraded this from 10.4 to 10.5. Running nicely as a internet gateway. Went away for weekend so put it into sleep mode. Came back, power button on front panel stopped working, and one of the raid slices on the system drive failed.
Tried to repair this and system now no longer boots, but freezes on loading OS (spinning disc stops in mid spin) and it will not boot from installation disc via firewire or internal DVD drive (swapped in a replacement to ensure it works). The installation disc stops at the apple splash screen, but goes no further.
I can, helpfully, get into Open Firmware mode, so something is working on some level. Sadly, I can't seem to find a copy of the Apple Hardware Test for this machine (see my post on this) to check it out.
I can tell you that I'm getting very adept at working with Xserve hardware, if not very effectively.
My working hypothesis on this is that there is some issue with these units being used 27/7x365 for however long, and then being left 'off' for a prolonged period.
Thinking that whilst they are designed to operate reliably as constantly on and working under load, so facet of being 'off' breaks 'something'.
If really pushed to go out on a limb, I'd theorise that under load the electronics/IC's settle into position, but then when switched off things cool down, contract, and causes weaknesses in electrical connections to occur. When next used, these then start to fail, giving a pattern of initial operability followed by delayed failure with a cascade of increasingly servere symptoms until terminal failure is reached.
But that is wild, uneducated, conjecture.
So, no help, but I comiserate.
    XD Andy
btw, is anyone has some useful advice for me on where to find the AHT 2.0.1 for Xserve or even just the part number ... ... ...

  • Intel Xserve will NOT boot from hard disk drive

I have two Intel Xserves 2.0 QC machines
I have tried to re-install version 10.4.11 OS (don't ask) onto a Hard disk drive that is in a Disk drive caddy and inserted in the machine.
When booting from The installation DVD media
The disk is seen by the "Disk Utility" (the disk is partitioned as GUID boot) and the installation proceeds to the disk.
Once the first pass of the installation is complete and the system reboots, the system shows the folder and ? mark.
If I boot and hold "ALT" key to view all avaialble boot options the Hard Disk Drive does NOT appear as valid boot disk.
It does show, the still inserted Installation DVD.
I CAN boot from an external firewire drive and the Hard disk drive is visible to the OS once logged in.
I have tried different caddy postions (left, middle and right)
I have tried bona fide Apple supplied Disk drives
I have tried various different caddies
I have tried installing Operating System 10.5.*  and  10.6.8 server
I have run SMC reset and system reset
But still I cannot boot off from any Hard Disk Drive inserted in a caddy at the front of the system.
    Has anyone seen this behaviour?
    Is it fixable?
Do I have replace something like the Hard Disk Drive back plane circuit board? Or even the main logic board?
I have now run out of ideas and cannot find any help in discussions or just googling.
ANY help would be very appreciated
    Regards
    Tony

    Antonio Hi !
QC = Quad core  or  QX as it is written on the "pull out" serial number tab at rear of system
    I have 3 late 2006 Intel xserves
On my intial posting I declared 2 were 2.0 machines - when I was trying to be concise
2 of the macines are 2.66 systems and 1 is 2.0 system - all are QX machines
the 2.0 and 1 of the 2.66 will NOT boot from the ADM and disk inside the system - whereas the other 2.66 system will.
I have many different Caddies and these have different product/model number labels
    603-9965
    603-9545
    603-9796
    these are marked "intel SATA"
The 80Gb was only one of the drives tested - I have used Seagate 400Gb 750Gb and 1Tb  -  all of which have been used in systems at one time or another
and as I said the drives ARE visible once the operating system (either installation DVD or external firewire are booted from) - they are just NOT visible when the system is searching for boot media.
Thanks for the guide - I will look through that and continue to try and find an answer

  • Cisco 7941G phones will not boot up after factory reset.

Cisco 7941G phones will not boot up after factory reset.
    The following happens.
    1. Speaker light lit (Green)
    2. Phone displays a firmware upgrade page (see attachment) for a few minutes. (Doesn't seems to be upgrading, but it "saids" upgrading)
    3. Saw Cisco logo with a Java Powered page.
    4. The whole thing loops again and again...
I think the reason why the phone isn't booting up is because the phone needs to know where to find the configuration/firmware files from a tftp server. I do have a TFTP server, but normally I need to go in settings to change the alternative tftp server, but the thing is that now I can't even press the settings button...
    Please help.

How many phones were reset and upgrading at one time? What is the setting of the TFTP Maximum Serving Count (Advanced TFTP Service Parm) on each of the TFTP servers?
Sounds like too many devices trying to use TFTP at once.

  • Ugh/ kernal panics / apple hardware test will not boot / help

so my first thought is to replace all my memory and I even have some coming via OWC -- but it seems silly just to replace memory on a hunch and randomly. So I run rember and get an all cler on all my memory. Can this really be soo? So I think - try the Apple Hardware Test.
I hold down c key as 'puter is booting and I get command line screen that says
    "invalid memory ascess at %srr0:ae0c0108
    %srr1: 0c01086F
    bad bus info crc-16"
than it tells me to type in mac-boot to boot --but it will not boot - the next screen just says command line ok
    what should I do next
this machine has been acting up for over 6 months and its driving me nuts -- I bought the memory as a "quick fix" but now I am starting to have my doubts. It would be cool to know before I decide to install it so I can return it for my $ if my hunch is wrong --
    help! and thanks!

I can give you some general advice about buying memory:
The question then becomes what if memtest passes it all... I couldn't complete the cloning of about 220 GB of files from one drive to another with the original MacWarehouse chips in place, but could when they were removed.
I have had quite a bit of experience testing memory, most of it grey market stuff that I salvage from trash cans and such like place. I have found some memory that worked perfectly and never gave me any problems. I have found some memory that gave me kernel panics. I have found some memory that are somewheres in between: they seem fine at first, and then when you start to run lots of apps or copy large files that's when the problems shows up, and the problems are subtle -- once in a while a task would randomly crash, but restarting the task would make it OK, etc., etc.
I've had a PC133 stick that repeatedly tested and passed on memtest until the 4th pass, then an error showed. After the error showed, there were lots of errors.
For my own use, I do not use any memory that fails memtest at all, since I am swimming in memory anyway. I usually test them overnight. Certainly when buying new memory I expect them not to fail memtest when run overnight (usually about 6-7 passes).
I'll use memory that fail occasionally in client stations that are not function critical, but my experience has been once you get some error in a memory chip, it gets worse with time.
I want to avoid if possible having the machine down for hours at a time to run memtest in Single User mode as it's serving up genealogy databases on 4 different domains, as well as static pages on 8 other domains as well as being my every day work-a-Mac.
If you're serious about hosting those domains, I suggest you buy a Mac Mini for your clientstation and let the server be the server.
sending CL3 chips maybe the Apple Hardware Test is expecting to see CL2.5 which is what the 3 chips I have to do work are.
CL3-PC3200 chips can pinch hit for CL2.5-PC2700 chips in some limited circumstances, but they were sending you CL3-PC2700 chips in place of CL2.5-PC2700 chips. I smell herring.
or are they really not the chips the label says they are?
Chips are sometimes mislabeled, due to operator error.
