Server Won't Boot - Grey Screen of Death Strikethrough Circle

My Xserve is having some serious difficulties and as a result, so am I.
To start from the beginning, I've been running a standard install of 10.5.1 for a couple of weeks now and thus far it has been smooth sailing. Last week we upgraded to 10.5.2 and some issues reared there ugly head (not saying that .2 is the cause but this was the chain of events). Firstly SMB started going skewiff, not letting users login in to shared folders, then mail stopped some services and could not be restarted.
This culminated with what seems to be a failed restart (in that i told the device to restart but didn't see it through to coming back), a weekend passed and on monday nothing was live any more. When a monitor was plugged in, all that we saw as the grey screen, apple logo and spinning gear. After sitting there for 5mins or so the display would go black, the Xserve would restart, the grey screen and spinning gear would appear, and the cycle would continue.
We were able to boot from the install dvd, but at this point we decided to call apple and get some pro advice. Based on this we tried to verify disk permissions but got an error of something like failed on exit. The apple rep wanted to go into single user mode and mount drives and run disk util from command but we got no were. To clarify we were using a two risk mirror raid and verify disk returned an all ok report.
As we were getting no ware the apple rep recommend removing on of the raid disks (to have a keep a backup) and try restoring the system from our time machine backup on an ext drive. We chose a date before we thought the issue may have developed (but not before the upgrade to 10.5.2). When this had finished and the system did its restart, the grey screen appear with the apple logo for a moment, but this would then change to a circle with a strikethrough it. We attempted another TM restore from a point before the 10.5.2 backup but got the same result.
After getting fed up with all this, we tried a fresh install (without deleting the disk partitions and re-initialising the disk) and low and behold the system started up again. Tried to do a restore from TM via the install dvd process but this set us back to our strikethrough circle problem again.
To tell you the truth, I'm so frustrated with this thing right now I'm considering sending it back!!!
Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi mik.e245
Pop in the Install Disk 1 that came with your iMac and run disk repairs as described in the articles below:
http://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=3810
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1018.html
Not always, but many times Kernal Panic's are associated with a ram issue's. If a ram module was recently added it may have become partially dislodged/unseated and needs to be reseated.
If your still having trouble run the Hardware Test from the same install disk as per this article.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 won't boot, grey screen, 10.9.4

Hi guy I hope you are all well,
I have been running a 1.1 MBP Santa Rosa since 2010 and decided it was time for an update, so in January I got hold of a 2008 Penrhyn model. That was running Mavericks absolutely fine until 2 weeks after 10.9.3 when it began to have gfx crashes, kernel panics, refuse to boot etc. Now it won't even turn on, just a low fan noise for 10 secs then it switches itself off.
I figured the Penrhyn was just too long in the tooth now and must have had dodgy hardware. Nothing I've made this year will now work on the Santa Rosa on Snowy so I decided to splash out on a mid-2011 Sandy Beach, 15.4" 2.0ghz i7. This has been absolutely great the last month, until the day I went up to 10.9.4. It began to crash and need rebooting when iPhoto opens after plugging in my iPhone. At first I disabled iPhoto's auto-open and the phone works fine with iTunes and charges when iPhoto is closed. Without the phone plugged in iPhoto worked fine. Inevitably I plugged the phone in last night while iPhoto was still open. The screen went a purple-pattern, I rebooted and now it won't boot past the apple logo and pie-wheel at the chime. It just goes to a grey screen.
Recovery does not work, just a solid blue screen. Booting off a Lion install DVD also just gets a grey screen after the logo/chime. I cleared the PRAM, and the SMC three times. Starting in safe-mode the progress bar loads fine, but then it's back to grey screen.
So I'm now back on my Santa Rosa, which has never had a fault, nor may I add have any of my PPC Macs!
Anyone have a possible solution for this or know what the exact hardware-fault may be? I really don't want to pay Apple to repair it, having spent on over £1000 on MBPs this year that now don't turn on
    Many thanks, James

I've been having similar issues with a late 2011 17" MBP with 10.9.4.  I haven't worked out what the problem is, but I'm eventually able to enter recovery mode after multiple (15-30) attempts.  Between attempts, I tried resetting the PRAM, entering safe mode, entering hardware diagnostics mode, and occasionally just leting it hang on the blue or grey screen.
Repairing disk permissions fixes the problem.  It's happened twice now, with an hour or two of panic between getting it back up and running again.  It's only been since the 10.9.3 or 10.9.4 update, which other users have experienced problems with.  I didn't make a backup before updating (this is the first issue I've ever had with my machine), so I may have to start with a fresh install to determine if it's software or hardware.

  • HELP! MacBook Pro 17" Won't Boot-Grey Screen-Errors During Verbose Safe Mode Boot

Booting regularly it hangs on the grey screen, if it does go into desktop, it freezes and won't do anything.
I did disk check and repair even though it found no errors, and did verify and fix permissions since it showed a LOT of permission errors. Still won't boot into desktop though.
Ran safe mode verbose and got the following disk0s2 I/O Errors-What does this mean??? Hard drive problem?
I have reload OS X 3 times in the past few weeks because of freezing issues in Mavericks and stuck with Mountain Lion and it was running fine until I went to boot up this morning after a clean shut down and won't boot up ever since.

  • G4 Powerbook won't boot; grey screen Apple logo only

My G4 Powerbook 17" 1.33 stopped booting.  I reinstalled OS 10.4.3 successfully, but on start up only get a grey screen with Apple logo with no spinning gear.  I have reverified HDD with Disk Utility from the OS Install DVD, and it confirmed no problems.  Any suggestions?

If you have the original OS X disks that came with the system, run the Apple hardware test. Find the disk that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label, insert it and reboot holding the alt/option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. You want to see if it finds any hard drive access issues.

  • Imac won't boot (grey screen, prohibit sign, folder with ? mark)

Before I bring my iMac to a store (which I can barely lift on my own!), I thought I'd give one last shot in the forums. I've already spoken with Apple Care who, after two rounds of phone support, said it's time to bring it in.
My computer was working fine but I had to force quit a few programs. Finally I had to shut it down, and when trying to reboot, I get stuck on the grey screen with the progress wheel spinning. I tried holding the C button, used the Install disc to try "Disk Utility". What came up with Disk Utility was it said it was rebuilding a B-tree, and then just hung. I tried that again (all with Apple Care on the phone) and then it couldn't find the hard drive.
So... any other ideas? Let me know if you need more information; I am desperate for help before I have to find a babysitter for my child so I can get this computer out the door for some (gasp!) data recovery!

Ouch....Time machine would mean moving on to 10.5...
If you decide to stay with 10.4 may I recommend SuperDuper! for cloning/backing up...30 bucks and easy to use....
I run 3 different external drives 2 for clones of my system and one for storage of various folders...cuts down on worries
Again I also suggest going with one or both of the Utilities I mentioned when the time is right....
Personally I don't have anything on my Mac's that is worth $1200....don't hold your breath on Apple doing anything about your Mac's ultimate demise

  • Will not boot past Grey Screen of Death

I was using Safari. Got the spinning beachball. Then it quit, followed by Text Edit, and Quicktime player which were running in the backround.
I was able to restart through the Apple menu, and got the Grey Screen of Death(GSoD), with the apple, and no spinning gear.
I had to shut it down using the power button and restarted holding Command-S so that I could run fsck in the Command Line, but it wouldnt go to the command line and all I got was the GSoD.
So, I started the computer from an external firewire drive, (using the option button on startup, which worked), and it booted fine and mounted my internal drive. (All my files appear to be there and are accessible. The good News...)
I ran disk utility, and it said that the internal drive was fine, no repairs needed.
I shut it down, unplugged the power cord and battery, reset the PMU, restarted, zapped the pram, and let it try to load, only to get the GSoD.
Then I booted from the firewire again, ran Techtool Pro (TTP), everything passed. I rebuilt the directory using TTP, restarted and still got the ole GSoD.
Telephone Tech Support made me use the Install disk to restart, and run disk utility, (no problems), and upon rebooting still the GSoD. They said I could take it to the Apple store, or run an archive and install.
I can't do an archive and install, (from home), because my original disk was Panther, and I can't find it, and my Tiger disk is only an upgrade disk. I don't want to do this anyway, and my last resort would be to clone my firewire disk back to my laptop, which I also do not want to do if I don't have to.
I was considering buying Diskwarrior (DW). It used to do miracles for me with OS9, but that was always when the drive wouldn't mount. I don't know how DW does with the ole GSoD, and a disk that mounts, or whether it can be reccomended to deal in this situation.
Any help would be appreciated, as well as anyone who cannot help, but can tell me what is wrong when the computer can't get past the GSoD.
    Thanks in advance.
    Powerbook G4 1.67mhz 1gb RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I wanted to add to my post that I have no third party hardware attached, (RAM, etc.), and disconnected all peripheral devices, only connecting the firewire external to boot the thing.
I also made no recent software installations. The last was the 10.4.8 update on 11/22.
    Austin
I looked at that article for <10.3.9
The closest symptom was the blank grey screen. Though it did not mention the addition of the apple like my case. It suggests disk utility, and PMU reset, which I did and didn't help.
I looked at some of the other symptoms fixes for the blue-screen, -OS9 is not installed on the computer, and single user and safe modes also don't work.
I have an appointment at the Apple Store for this afternoon. I have the AppleCare protection plan. What in your opinion can they do, that telephone tech support couldn't suggest, besides performing the archive and install, that I can't do at home, and don't want to do anyway?
Also, seeing as the internal drive does mount, and I can access the data, why do you think that DW might fix it? I know they have a proprietary method, but I did replace the directory with TTP.
DW did perform miracles for me in the past, but then only when the disk wouldn't mount.
Right now my plan is to see the Genius this afternoon, if he's got nothing new to offer, I can buy DW rev 39 at the Apple Store, and run it there.
I guess barring any other advice, if you feel that DW can do the trick, I could buy it before seeing the Genius, and if it works, cancel my appointment.<br>

  • My Macbook Pro got the grey screen of death (kernel panic) and now it won't even turn on

    Hey.
Well my macbook pro just got the grey screen of death and upon doing some research I unerstan that it's a kernel panic. However my issue is that my laptop won't reboot, at all. Whenever I try to press the power buttons, the external buttons will light up and the you can hear it running (barely, very low) but nothing else happens. My screen doesnt turn on and no noise comes from the computer to indicate it turning on. However if I hold the power button again it'll act as if shutting down (the noise). I've tried to look online but I havent seen any soluctions for my specific issue.
Also note: I recently got it sent in for repairs and it was sent to apple, I was told they replaced both fans and the motherboard, however I'm not sure if that would affect it.
Anyways, my mac is the world to me and I would hate to have to lose it, anyone have any solutions?

Call AppleCare.  Apple has a 90 day warranty on all repairs.  Let them deal w/it.

  • Intel iMac with 10.5.8 - Grey Screen of Death but worse please help!

Okay, this has happened three times now in six months, and I'm about to go out of my mind. Everytime it's a little different but basically:
My iMac becomes unresponsive, whether by a system lock up, or I wake up in the morning (like this morning) to a black screen with the white light still on, as if it were asleep. Nothing I do wakes the computer or otherwise makes it respond, so I hold the power button down for a few seconds and it shuts off.
Now, when I boot up, I get a grey screen with the Apple logo with the spinning black/grey pinwheel.
Inserting a CD does nothing. In fact, now my only install CD of Leopard is stuck in the slot-loading drive. I've tried everything I can to eject it: hold down eject on boot, left mouse button on boot, option on boot, commandoption+pr, command+v, etc. etc. etc.
I'm a software developer for OS X and have extensive hardware knowledge, so I kind of know a bit about what I'm doing.
The iMac will not boot off of a CD. It doesn't even recognize the CD. I have an external USB 2.0 hard drive with a current Time Machine backup, but I don't think those are bootable.
Anyway, in the past, to resolve this issue, I've had to take the iMac apart, put the internal hard drive into an external enclosure, and mount the drive onto my MacBook Pro. Interestingly enough, when I do this the drive mounts perfectly fine and shows all files exactly as they should be. So it's something to do with Leopard destroying it's boot record, or some other system configuration.
Even worse, I cannot simply reinstall Mac OS X from the laptop, because the installer says the hard drive needs to be formatted before an install can occur. So either way I'm losing all my data (even though as I said I have a current backup).
Well this time I haven't taken it apart yet. But the install CD is stuck in the drive. Even if I got the hard drive out, and mounted on my MacBook, my other install CD is too damaged to use, so I MUST get this CD out of the iMac.
    My questions are:
What do you do when the grey screen of death occurs, and the computer won't even boot off of the CD?
What do you do to get a CD stuck in an iMac out? Especially when the iMac is in the grey screen of death mode?
What in the world is causing this to happen EVERY 3-6 MONTHS??!
Someone please help... I'm going insane.

Hi I am having the identical problem with my 24" intel iMac 2007..... Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I'm on round 3 now and with a completely blank grey screen and it won't start up from the disk 1.. I also have diskwarrior and techtool pro as well as the osx leopard and snow leopard disk... The HD is new.. Replaced by apple 3 months ago.. Don't know the cause the first time this happened about 9 months ago.. 2nd time, 6 months ago it never rebooted from the office for mac 2008 critical update... Did a clean install after backing up to TC... Took it to apple replaced HD even though it appeared ok, they checked all hardware and I ran techtool pro daily ever since. Last week software update had several updates avail. Office for mac being one of them.. I updated and have never booted since.. . I swear to never ever use another Microsoft product as long as I live if I can just fix this once more... Help me please

  • Mac Mini (sort of) Grey screen of death, Advice

    Hi there,
Got an old intel 1.66Ghz Mac Mini, which has started to show some problems. Here are the facts of the case. I've been through the Grey screen of death page on Apple Support.
    1. Sometimes the display won't come on, sometimes the standby button just flashes
    2. Generally speaking, I get no apple symbol, and the grey screen will stay there for ever
    3. If I unplug some USB devices and/or Ethernet cable (no standard way of doing this - appears to be random), I get the apple logo and can log in ok / boot to the Snow Leopard DVD. Have done a utilities check on the disk which came back as ok. Plug the USB devices back in and they work ok.
    4. When I log in, if I restart, Grey screen of death.
So sometimes it works, most time not. I'm not afraid of taking the back off and doing something if it needs to be done, but any advice would be appreciated.
Should I attempt a snow leopard full restore to see if that does anything?
    Thanks

If it boots fine without any USB devices plugged in
it is probably one of them that is causing the issue.
If one of the USB devices is a hard drive, it is most
likely the culprit.  Had this same issue with a newer
Mini and found that a WD USB drive that I kept plugged in
was causing it to get "stuck" in the booting process.

  • Modded G4, 10.4, and a Grey Screen of Death

Finicky just doesn't do justice to any of the computers I've had.
I bought Drive Genius and Data Recovery from Prosoft to recover some data and then defrag everything across three internal drives. After Defragging my 80 GB boot drive, I go to restart the computer with it, since I had been running off of the Drive Genius disk. Nada, spinning wheel.
So, I boot off of the DG DVD again and run tests, and it comes up pretty much in the green, maybe a few problems, and it still won't boot. Since I have the disk's primary contents backed up elsewhere, I decide to swipe the disk and reinstall the system. Only problem is, I get the grey screen of death every single time I try to reinstall. I reset the motherboard and the PRAM, I even install a better processor, from a 1.733 GHz single processor to a dual 1.2 GHz processor, in case that was the problem. And I even tried the DVD drive that originally shipped with my computer.
I'm distressed to report that my might mac is still dead, though I'd like to think there's still a hope.
Any one have any ideas, or am I clinging on to a truly dead paperweight?

I didn't buy my computer at an Apple store, it was a refurbished system. I did, however, use a CD with the AHT image on it, and it said there was a default catch, and a mismatch, or something like that. Thing is that I put in a whole bunch of new stuff in it, and don't really think that the AHT could really do much.
I got a new G4 DA motherboard with a 466 MHz processor, just in case the mother board is actually out of whack. In any case, it should allow me to practically rebuild my computer.

  • I upgraded my Macbook from 4.8 to Snow Leopard 6.3 now it keeps crashing and grey screen of death

Hi everyone i have a Mac Book   2.16GHz   Core 2 Duo, 4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.  Prior to upgrading my macbook worked like a dream.
I upgraded to 6.3 then straight up to 6.8, had lots of problems with the computer screen going blue, the Mac refrshing itself and me having to type in my passowrd to discover all the applications had shut and my work lost.  Then i started to get the Grey screen of death, resulting in having to hold down the power button to switch off.  Yesterday i got the grey screen and on rebooting i kept getting the grey screen.  So i thought 6.8 might be an issue so i reinstalled 6.3 without doing any software updates.
I have started to get the same problems.  Only this time i can't open word or excel either.  whenever i run disk utilities i keep getting the same extensive list of repairs.  Here they are in case anyone can help.  And below is the last system diagnostic report.  Any help would be gratefully apprecaited.  It doesnt appear to be any particular program that is causing the problem, i thought it was safari but i have stopped using that.  THANK YOU

  • Grey screen of death when copy and paste in InDesign

    Hi,
So I see a lot of people here are dealing with the Grey Screen Of Death (GSOD) problem on Adobe Content Viewer. I'm on a MacBook Pro i7, and designing in InDesign 5.5.
What seems to be happening is when I delete buttons from one file, and copy paste the buttons from another file, and then try to view the content on my computer using Adobe Content Viewer, then I get the GSOD.
I am not getting the GSOD when I update other files - it just seems to be happening when I copy/paste buttons from other files. How do I fix this? I need to be able to preview the content and look for errors before I send it to the client.
    Thanks,
    Jess
UPDATE: I think it has something to do with dragging pages from other files into InDesign... could use some help from Adobe!

Thanks for your reply. I talked to the Apple Support again and they told me the server edition could only be used on that OS and if I wanted to use it as something else I could chose not to use the server applications, or buy a regular Mac mini. And that was all they said. Interesting since it was one of their sales persons who told me I could install Snow Leopard.
Anyway, I got hold of a client disc and it all worked like a charm.

  • Grey screen of death installing Leopard

    Hi everyone,
So I've tried to install Leopard on my Mac Pro with about 5 differents installation discs, and they've all lead me to the same result: grey screen of death.
Here're the steps that i took:
    1) 2x 500g Hitachi harddrives, erased clean, partitioned to RAID.
    2) Inserted the grey Leopard Mac Pro OS version 10.5.4 installation disc, clicked 'Restart'
    3) Computer started booting up, and when it got to the Start Up screen with the Apple logo, the grey screen of death ("You need to restart your...etcetc") appeared.
And this has happened with 5 sets of installation discs. I did the same steps with Snow Leopard and it worked.
Im using an 8-core Mac Pro with 8GBs of ram.
I tried the Leopard installation disc with a 4-core Mac Pro and it worked perfectly; no screens of death whatsoever.
I was just wondering: Is the Leopard disc not compatible with an 8-core machine? Or is there any other way I can install Leopard on my Mac Pro?

    Update:
    1) I also tried to boot as Target Disc Mode to install Leopard on a 4-core Mac Pro, but after installation it Kernel Panic-ed.
    2) I used the 'Restore' function in the Disc Utility by using a Disc Image of Leopard to a system RAID drive. The installation was moderately successful, but I also ended up with Kernel Panics.

  • Install new hard drive Macbook 2.1, No DVD Drive, Grey screen of death!

I have never backed up my Macbook 2.1 duo before yesterday. While in the process of backing up I was using photoshop, and my computer froze. I waited 30 min and then decided to shut it down. When I tried to turn it on it will not boot-up, I only get the grey screen of death. I had just recently upgraded to Snow Leopard this week. I used an external DVD drive which seemed to cause issues. So I thought I might be able to use that to install a clean version on this busted drive, well nothing worked, tried holding option key, holding down the C key. So this is my new idea I ordered another drive that says its compatible with my drive. Since the my mac doesnt seem to acknowledge my drive, I bought an external housing for my new internal. Confused yet, I am... I want to format and load Snow leopard onto the new hard drive using my girl friends mac. then put in my macbook. I would like to know if this will work? how I need to format my drive in disk utility ( do I partition it out?). Is it possible that it is not my Hard Drive? Any type of advise would be great. If you have done this I would love to hear from you...
Another side note, I just upgraded my RAM from 1GB to 4GB on my Macbook 2.1, I did try and putting my old ram back in just incase that was the issue, but that did not help

Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup

  • Not your normal grey screen of death . .

    Hi all –
Something’s crapped out on my first Gen 8 core Mac Pro and I need rescuing. I come to you after about 4 hours of trying everything the Internet has to offer. Here’s what’s up –
Machine froze with a spinning beach ball. Tried to reboot, got the apple logo with the spinner underneath it, just at the point when the spinner stops spinning for a second, and you expect it to go through blue screen to your desktop pattern, it just went to a light grey screen with some blocks of thin colorful lines arranged in rectangles across the screens – (I have 2 screens).
    Not good.
    Here’s what I’ve tried.
First, tried booting from Diskwarrior disk and then Snow Leopard disk – same thing. So it’s not my system disk (snow leopard), but just to be certain, I hooked up the Mac Pro to my laptop in FW target disk mode – all the drives showed up, and I could run disk repair from the laptop on the mac pro’s drives – minor errors needed fixing on the system drive but basically everything was ok, so at least my disks are good.
Reset the PRAM – many times. No joy
    Booting in safe boot mode.
Took out the power chord, waited a minute – put it back in.  Nada
Disconnected all peripherals except mouse and keyboard.
Tried one monitor at a time. Here I got a little something. With just one monitor hooked up, no funny blocky patterns, just grey screen. So that’s something different.
Took out all internal drives except startup drive.
Took out and reseated the video card.
Tried taking out RAM modules a pair at a time, and here something happened. I have 9 gigs of RAM, 1 gig that came with the machine and 4 x 2 GB DIMMs (?)  Removing ANY combo of RAM from the machine, the behavior at boot up changed somewhat. After a while of grey screen, the monitors would suddenly shift to blue screen, but just when my hopes were got up, it would flash back and forth before settling back on light grey screen of death. At this point I would generally have a working cursor, usually spinning beach ball, sometimes regular pointer, which I can mouse around with. Also pressing the volume buttons on the keyboard would give me noise, but just for one go round, then that stopped working.
Put all the RAM back in, and it’s back to the grey screen with blocky patterns, and no blue at all. In all cases, the hard drive is trying to get me going for a few minutes before it gives up and relaxes.
So that’s where I’m at. I’m hoping someone will tell me I need a new video card – not too expensive. But if that was the case, would I be able to see the apple logo at the beginning – or the shifting Target Disk mode icon? The display is fine at those two times. My instinct tells me the logic board is ok, or else how could I boot into target disk mode, and would the boot process even get as far as it did? wishful thinking?
    Any clues anyone?
If I don’t respond, immediately it’s late here on the East Coast, and i may have to crash, but all help is gratefully received . .
    Regards and thanks
    Malcolm

Hi hatter – thanks for your input
A corrupt hard disk can prevent booting from CDs and DVDs.
So I took the boot drive out and tried booting from my snow Leopard DVd – no go.
You say "boot from Disk Warrior." I never boot from a DW CD.
Well, it is the recommended way of repairing a directory using disk warrior. One absolutely can boot from a DW DVD. But at this point i don't think it's a directory problem.
You saying that you don't have clones of your drives?
You don't have a small emergency system drive / volume used justfor maintenance?
I didn’t actually say, but I have time machine backups of everything, and a less than totally current clone. No I don’t have a small system drive. Whenever I’ve had system issues in the past I’ve always been able to boot from the OS DVD.
UPS? they help in many ways. Not sure what or why it froze outof the blue, but when that happens even though you said "minorrepairs" I do NOT TRUST Apple's Disk Utility in such situations.
Actually I didn’t mention anything about a UPS either, but for the record, yes, I do use one.
Keep the OS only on the boot drive. Have spares and backups youcan boot from and use.
Boot with only a new drive or none and see if 10.6.x DVD worksthen.
    See above
Get out your OEM DVD and run Apple Hardware Test (it is on thelabel, hold down "d" on startup)
Well, I found “a” version of AHT dated 2007, which is before my Mac Pro, but it did work, give an accurate profile, and returned Test Results –“No trouble found”
One more point – I was able to network and use screen sharingfrom my laptop. My thinking was that if I could see the mac pro desktop from mylaptop it could well be a bad graphics card. Using “Chicken of the VNC” I couldconnect to the Mac Pro – chicken returned a black screen, but I could controlthe cursor (which was usually a spinning beach ball) from the laptop. This hasme flummoxed at this point.
Start using CCC or SuperDuper and plan on investing in a coupledrives unless you actually have some good drives you can rely on and put intoservice. Fresly zeroed preferrably.
Pretty sure at this point that the drive is not at fault, but I do need to use CCC more often. I have backup drives for everything - 8 drives in all . .
    thanks for your help . . hatter . .
