Servermgrd_dns and ADSL (PPPoE)

I'm currently struggling with the (far to common) servermgrd_dns errors, the problem seems to be that servermgrd tries to match the hostname to the dynamic (ppp0) ip address instead of the static one.
How do i get the server to use the static ip address as the primary ip address?
I already dragged the interface to the first position in systemprefs, what more do i have to do?

No, when the machine was installed, the PPPoE connection wasn't configured yet, only the static IP.
The problem is that the machine uses the IP-address from ppp0 as it's primary IP address, instead of the static IP from en0.
The result of this, offcourse means that the FQDN that points to the IP address of en0 doesn't match the primary IP address (ppp0)
The solution to the problem is simple, OSX Server "just" needs to use en0 instead of ppp0 as it's primary interface, but for the life of me i can't convince it to do just that.
If this were just a dynamic IP assigned over DHCP eg, the solution is pretty trivial, just drag the order for the interfaces in the network preference pane, however, doing this DOES NOT affect a ppp0 connection

    I recently bought a TC 1TB box and was able to set it up okay. It has started behaving badly. The logs show constant disconnecting. The light goes orange, 2 errors show up in the Utility PPPoE server and Internet Connection, and then they go away, only to reoccur. It causes havoc with web access, FTP connects, etc.

    I have my iMac connected via Ethernet and it has the same symptoms; I don't think it is a wireless problem. I have done a factory reset of the TC, reset and rebooted the DSL modem, changed settings galour, and the PPPoE disconnects won't go away.
    Any ideas?
    Could it be that the modem (Thomson Speedtouch 516) is incompatible with the TC? Or is the TC just no good?
    My next steps will be to reconnect the old slow Linksys router and see if the problem goes away. A last resort - my household of 4 laptops and an iPod Touch won't be happy! On the other hand, they will get internet access...

    Try this link for more information about your modem.
    http://www.speedguide.net/broadband-view.php?hw=32
    It appears that the default IP address for the modem is 192.168.1.254
    You would normally connect the modem directly to your computer and enter the address above in your browser to bring up the administration pages for your modem. You will probably need to look for Advanced Settings or Expert Settings or something like Configuration Settings to look for an option to set the modem as a simple "bridge".
    Also noticed a number of posts when I Googled your model number about frequent disconnect problems with the modem. There may be some hints in here as well.

    If you are not familiar with changing the configuration of a modem, I would recommend that you have an IT guy look things over at your location. Perhaps Thompson support could lend a hand. Sorry, I'm not familiar with this modem so can only provide general info.

  • Cisco-Linksys Router and no PPPOA Option for Conne...

    Hi all!
    New here and just hoping to get some here!
    We are using a BT Business hub Router and it is having a few issues with wireless connectivity, so I would like to use another router to see if it is our equipment or if it is the router itself.
    I have a Cisco Linksys E1000 Router and after looking at the BT router I can see that the connection type is set to PPPOA with a username and password. I do know the username and password so that isnt an issue, however on the Cisco router there is no option for PPPOA, the only options are:
    Static IP, DHCP, PPPoE, PPTP, L2TP, and BigPond
    There is a connection in the back of the cisco router for the ADSL cable, I was just wondering if there is a way to work around this?
    Thanks very much!!

    I am sure you will get help there when someone has time.

  • AIRPORT EXTREME AND ADSL (ALICE)

    Greetings everyone,
    I have a Powerbook G4, which is a little older than most but here is the problem. I just arrived in Sicily and I purchased the Airport Extreme for my ADSL(Alice modem) provided by the internet company. Well I am able to go through the entire setup and see the base but once I go to connect to the internet utilizing PPoE, it states that it is unable to connect (password is wrong). The thing is, it is right! If I connect to the Alice via LAN, it works fine. Is there something I am doing wrong? Is the ADSL (Alice) not compatible with the Airport? I have tried connecting with multiple and even my neighbors set ups. The process has taken 2 weeks so far. Please someone take a few mins to help me out. The ADSL(Alice) only have 2 ports and I have multiple computer products to run(Sony Playstation, Sony Computer, Vonage, and my sons desktop). Any help would be generous!

    Bearing in mind that I don't know anything about the specifics of your "Alice modem" - one comment: the PPPoE protocol should be handled by only one device. If your Alice modem is configured to handle PPPoE, then you shouldn't also configure the base station to handle PPPoE. If your Alice modem isn't configured to handle PPPoE, then your base station needs to be configured to handle PPPoE. But under no circumstances should any of the devices connected to your base station (like your Mac) be configured to handle PPPoE.

  • AEBS and ADSL... can't make it work - please help?!?!?

    I've searched the forums and the internet and cannot get this to work. We just moved to Japan and are now using ADSL for our connection through HeroNet. If I plug the ADSL modem into the back of my iMac it connect using the ISP settings provided. If I connect the modem to the AEBS the green light comes on the AEBS and I run the Airport Setup Assistant, it tells me I'm connected, Airport signal comes on the top screen bar, a timer starts going indicating active PPPoe connection, I try to bring up a web page and... nothing! Just keeps trying and trying to connect. I've tried restarting the modem, unplugging and plugging back in, unplugging AEBS, restarting the computer... none of the simple of the simple trouble shooting helps. Internet Connect pops up repeated with "Cannot find PPPoe server" message. Network Diagnostics even tells me that when examining the Airport connection "You appear to have a working internet connection" and tells me I have mistyped the website names Obviously, not the problem. Seems Airport thinks it's connected to the internet but the applications can't use it to get online? Any thoughts would be VERY welcome as I've run out of options and really missing Airport. TIA.

    Oops. I just realized I'm using AEBS to refer to an Airport Express. I have ONLY an Airport Express at this time. So there is only one ethernet port on the Express and that seems to be the confusion. I can wirelessly configure the Express using the iMac Admin Utility if the Express is plugged into the ADSL modem. I am confident I'm entering everything correctly and once I get the setting updated on the Express, the Airport says it's connecting to the PPPoE server and the timer starts counting next to the Airport status monitor (top of screen) suggesting the computer thinks it's connected. Just no ability to make apps use the internet... enter web page and Safari just spins and spins trying but then eventually says it can't connect. No other apps can get "online" either. Any way to make this work wirelessly with my current setup?

  • SA 520 and ADSL router/modem

    we have 3 sites that i wanteed to conect together using 3 SA520 1 site is cable modem and the 2 other sites are ADSL with a Router /Modem supplied by provider currently each site has a old firewall connected which i had planned to replace. My question is are these suitable for ADSL as well as cable

    As long as the ADSL or cable modem has Ethernet ports, they should be able to connect to SA500.
    SA500 has 10/100/1000 WAN ports.  The SA500 also support PPPoE.

  • X3000 connected to business ADSL (PPPoA) with more IP-addresses (8)

    We use a x3000 for our business ADSL line (PPPoA) which has more IP-addresses (8),
    Setting up the connection is no problem,  but the subnet on the external IP-address is set to 255.255.255.255, so we only have one IP-address.
    Is there a way to change this?
    Thx
    Regards, Joop

    It depends, denkavit. These 8 IP addresses that you mentioned, are these local IP addresses or internet IP addresses? Are you trying to create multiple networks? You can check these links if you are trying to set up static routing or advance routing:  http://bit.ly/16pLqWE  and  http://bit.ly/16pLshn .

  • Airport Extreme and ADSL?

    Sorry if this is a no-brainer, but I purchased an Airport Extreme 802.11n (with a MacBook Pro, so won't get the box til the laptop comes in) and am now worried I won't be able to use it.
    On my current setup, I use a Windows box with a USB ADSL modem for internet connection, and want to set up wireless when my MacBook Pro arrives.
    I won't be able to use the Extreme, will I? Reading through again, the multiple references to cable internet should have tipped me off, but can I use an ADSL connection with the Airport Extreme?

    You will need an ADSL Ethernet modem.

    IPSec should only be an option if the WLC has a crypto card installed.  IIRC, only the 4400 supported the crypto card, and it went EoS shortly after the airespace acquisition.

  • Difference between Internet connection and ADSL co...

    I hope this is the correct forum for this query.
    I'm puzzled by the information I'm getting when I look at my Home Hub settings. Under Broadband:Internet I get the following:
    Connection time
    0 days, 3:32:44
    Data transmitted/received (MB)
    82.13 / 784.17
    But under Broadband:ADSL I get this:
    Line state
    Connected
    Connection time
    0 days, 0:22:55
    Can someone explain why the difference in connection time?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I'm not sure I'm ever going to get to a stable connection of 3 days. Going back to my original query, which stat should I look at, Broadband:Internet (currently showing:
    Connection time0 days, 1:16:05) or Broadband:ADSL which shows:
    Connection time0 days, 0:08:18
    Should it be possible to tell from the Event Logs if the hub itself is restarting, i.e. does Broadband:Internet connection time indicate just length of time the hub was connected to the exchange? When I did switch the hub off and on again and then looked at the logs the logs were cleared and started very briefly with a few entries dated 1 Jan. Is this the only way one can tell that the hub has actually restarted?
    Also how long are logs kept for? Today my logs only went back as far as about midnight - just tried to confirm that, but lo and behold, logs are showing 1 Jan again, starting with:
    00:00:28   1 Jan     WIRELESS interface turned on.
    00:00:27   1 Jan    usbmgr: start 0.4.8
    00:00:19   1 Jan    KERNEL Warm restart
     then after a number of other entries I get: (reading from the bottom of the list!)
    11:36:15   3 Aug     FIREWALL event (1 of 3): created rules
    11:36:14   3 Aug     FIREWALL event (1 of 3): deleted rules
    11:36:14   3 Aug     xDSL linestate down
    11:35:48   3 Aug     SNTP Synchronised to server: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
    11:35:48   3 Aug     SNTP Systemtime update: time setting 01:03:58 > new time setting: 11:35:48
    01:03:44   1 Jan     CONFIGURATION saved by TR69
    01:03:17   1 Jan     CONFIGURATION saved by TR69
    01:03:08   1 Jan     [CWMP] Connection Request NOT ALLOWED.
    01:02:16   1 Jan     FIREWALL event (1 of 15): modified rules
    01:02:16   1 Jan     xDSL linestate up (ITU-T G.992.1; downstream: 5344 kbit/s, upstream: 448 kbit/s; output Power Down: 19.8 dBm, Up: 12.1 dBm; line Attenuation Down: 22.0 dB, Up: 12.5 dB; snr Margin Down: 22.0 dB, Up: 14.9 dB)
    The logs then continue as normal(ish). This happened while I was out shopping.
    I am still wondering if my HH2 is the culprit for the very frequent disconnects, but don't know how to verify that. I did try looking for a replacement power supply online, but the one I need is no longer available in the BT shop - BT HH2 Type A 15v/1.2A, item code 044023. It also seems rather rare on other internet shopping sites, most offer a 12V one. I haven't as yet tried a different cable between hub and filter. Do I need something special there too?
    Do I just hang on in the hope that things settle down or should I finally contact BT and aks for help? If the hub is indeed the culprit will I be charged? If so perhaps I should just shell out for a new hub and see if that sorts things out.
    Like so many others on this forum and elsewhere getting more than a little cheesed off with a service I'm paying for but not getting.

  • K7n420 nforce1 Board and ADSL Modem combination

    Hi Guys,
    I am thinking on switching over to broadband internet thus jumping from my 56Kbps analog modem to an ADSL ((PSTN) modem and i have a couple of questions for the members who have a personal experience with this matter using the nforce1 k7n420 Motherboard. Lets shoot...
     1) What to prefer??... ADSL USB or ADSL Ethernet (LAN)?? Remember k7n420 has only usb 1.1 ports and not usb 2.
    2) Any known problems and suggested workarounds connecting the k7n420 and an adsl modem via usb or LAN???   (any links will be most appreciated )
    3) which is best?? ADSL using a splitter or ADSL using filters??
    That's All...for now...
    God Bless You All :hypecrite:

    What you mean by quality of cables?? can you be more specific??
    Yes, it is possible to have both using a splitter still. Most wires have at least 2 pairs or 4 wires running under the sheath. You can run voice on two wires ( In the U.S.A. it's typically Red and Green) and your data on the second pair ( Yellow and black) It keeps the signals isolated. / What I mean about quality wire is whether or not it's twisted pair. Under the sheath the pairs are twisted to reduce inductive overflow for example cat 3 is twisted 3X per inch, where cat 5 is twisted 5X per inch. The more twists, the less inductive bleed over. Inexpensive wire used by many contractors in homes today is not twisted at all which can cause problems. That's why I said the optimal would be to have a separate wire going to the computer. When a DSL line is installed the technician checks for good levels where it hits the building, using poor quality wire or having extra wire beyond the drop (bridge tap) can cause your level to drop which in turn reduces your speed and performance.
    Hope that explains it a little bit more for you.
    Cheers
    Bob

  • WRT54G and adsl dumb modem and vista

    Hey everyone, i recently bought a new dell laptop m1710 with windows vista. I didn't want the vista cause i knew it still has issues but was not able to downgrade, but anyways with my bitlord client v1.1 and also tested v0.53, if i download a few files in like 5-10 minutes my wireless goes limited or no connectivity. I tried port forwarding my bitlord program but still had issues, disabled user account control, windows firewall and defender, just have avg installed. tried different combos but still goes limited or no connectivity. i have yet to call windows if theres a fix for this but wondering if it could be my linksys..like a certain setting but the thing is that my older brother has a vista laptop and has no issues with his bitlord client...using same settings and same client. it just seems something is blocking me from downloading/uploading a certain amount and then cuts me off but i cant find anything in vista security/firewall setting that could be causing it. if anyone can lead me to the right direction that would be great. thanks.

    Seems to be a PC concern.. anyway a temporary fix might be to assign a static IP and DNS on your PC on the wireless network...
    If you need detailed instructions on how to do this just holler...

  • Netctl: Using same ethernet interface for PPPoE and LAN

    Configuration overview
    One ethernet interface connected to a switch which has both the LAN and my ADSL router (running in bridge mode).
    My Arch PC should connect via PPPoE (possibly multiple connections) to the ISP and be able to access the LAN simultaniously. (Connection sharing is another goal, but that is not yet relevant...)
    The main reason for not changing the setup is that some other people on the LAN use their own ISP accounts over the same line.
    I currently have two netctl profiles, adsl (PPPoE) and ethernet (LAN).
    I also want the ability to run two PPPoE sessions simultaniously (with routing to determine which data uses which connection). (This is not currently relevant, but have been in the past and might be again in the future...)
    The problem:
    I'm unable to connect to both the ethernet and ADSL profiles simultaniosly.
    I tried to switch to Network manager, but it has a known bug preventing the same interface from being used for both plain LAN and PPPoE.
    The workaround that currently seem to work, is to use ifconfig to manually add an IPv4 address to the ethernet interface after connecting the PPPoE session.
    The systax for a PPP profile also have the unusual feature that its "Interface" value refers to the underlying interface, rather than the created PPP interface.
    I currently have it working on my Ubuntu HDD and previusly had it working on Gentoo.
    (Under a standard Windows XP / 7, it works with a single connection, but multiple simultanious PPPoE connections require soem non-standard tools...)
    The Ubuntu setup
    eth0 is set up by NetworkManager (I didn't have the option to avoid that one...) and I have the PPPoE connections configured in my /etc/interfaces: (ppp0 is not currently in use, was previously)
    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback
    iface ppp0 inet ppp
    pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up # line maintained by pppoeconf
    provider dsl-provider-local
    auto ppp1
    iface ppp1 inet ppp
    pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up # line maintained by pppoeconf
    provider dsl-provider-intl
    I then have these files under /etc/ppp/peers: (with the name mathing the "provider" line) An example below. (passwords are in the /etc/ppp/*-secrets files)
    unit 0 # This specifies that the created connection uses ppp0, differs in others.
    noipdefault
    hide-password
    noauth
    persist
    plugin rp-pppoe.so eth0
    user "myuser@radius-domain"
    Arch setup:
    ADSL profile:
    Description='ISPName'
    Interface=enp4s0
    Connection=pppoe
    User='username@radius-server'
    Password='mysecret'
    ConnectionMode='persist'
    #UsePeerDNS=true
    # Override default LCP parameters from /etc/ppp/options
    LCPEchoInterval=15
    LCPEchoFailure=10
    Ethernet profile:
    Description='A basic static ethernet connection'
    Interface=enp4s0
    Connection=ethernet
    IP=static
    Address=('192.168.0.8/24')
    Solutions / Workarounds
    1. Manually configuring a IP after connecting PPPoE
    2. Not using netctl for pppoe, rather using the pppoe-setup tool
    3, Figuring out the correct netctl setup for this scenario - which is what I need your help for...
    Possibly related links
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=163956
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sh … Connection - Insists that an extra interface is needed for sharing connections - which is not a fundemental Linux requirement

    I used to use ubuntu & if you reboot into it (if you can) & run:
    $ ifconfig
    you will see eth0 & ppp1
    ppp1 will be set as the default gateway.
    Your issue in Arch is that you currently want the PPPoE interface to be the same as your LAN, this will not work at best you will need to bridge the 2 BUT I think what you should do is use the networkmanager profile as a guide & have  netctl create an adsl interface called ppp1 & set that as the default gateway
    thus:
    Description='ISPName'
    Interface=ppp1
    Connection=pppoe
    User='username@radius-server'
    Password='mysecret'
    ConnectionMode='persist'
    #UsePeerDNS=true
    # Override default LCP parameters from /etc/ppp/options
    LCPEchoInterval=15
    LCPEchoFailure=10
    I think this will work, try it & good luck
    PS:
    I do not use netctl as I use dhcp but you might even be able to configure netctl to set ppp1 as default gateway as a "post-up" command OR just create a systemd service to do it after the relevant netctl services are up

  • E1200 PPPoE and IPv6

    Have a v2 E1200.  Connect with PPPoE to ISP.  IPv4 works fine.  With firmware included on router, 2.0.01, it would receive a /64 of IPv6 from the ISP.  This /64 would show up under 'status' / 'local network'.  Although it did not seem to advertise this space to PC's on my network so I was unable to use it.  I updated firmware to 2.0.04.  Now it does not even pick up the IPv6 /64 at all.
    Anyone have PPPoE and IPv6 working?  Anywhere I can download 2.0.01 to try it again?
    Is there a model of router that actually works with IPv6?

    Usually you have to power cycle both the modem and router to get it to work. Manual 6rd tunnel works on E4200v2/EA4500 with DSL PPPoE . Auto tunnel doesn't work with my connection, but it might with yours.
    If you have AT&T, here's the 6rd info.
    http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB414401&cv=801&title=IPv6%20compatibility%20for%20IFITL...
    Also, if your internet connection type is PPPoE, you should always check your MTU. More than likely you'll need to set it manual and enter the appropriate mtu.
    For ADSL PPPoE, the MTU is 1492.
