Servermgrd: Where to specify DNS for server?

Been having a lot of trouble with Mac OS X Server 10.4.11 (running on PowerMac G5, 2 GHz, 2.5 Gb of RAM) the last few days. Some recurring log items I see are:
Jun 26 07:40:55 GBG-Server servermgrd: servermgr_dns: no name available via DNS for 172.16.1.64
Jun 26 07:40:55 GBG-Server servermgrd: servermgr_dns: no reverse DNS entry for server, various services may not function properly
I am not using the DNS service within OS X Server, it's a standalone that hosts a few databases and afp:// file sharing. Where does a person specify the "DNS" referred to in the log entries above??

Hi
Leif is absolutely correct in what he says, however if all you want the Server to do is host AFP and/or SMB shares you don't need internal DNS services. Admittedly things do work better with them but if you can ignore the warnings in the log it should not affect anything.
If the Server is supposed to be or may want to be an OD Master then you really must address the problem otherwise you don't really have an LDAP Server and it will cause you problems.
If you are not having any problems and things are working as they should be, ignore the logs and leave things as they are. Think of it a bit like going out on a sunny day and being warned by everyone you meet that it may rain later on and to take an umbrella with you. Not a great analogy I know but you get the point?

  • Specify DNS for network interface

    Hello
Please help me to specify name server for one network interface. Can't use resolv.conf because it's automatically rewrited by pppd script which establish connection with pppoe provider.
    Here is the diagram.
There's a local zone maintained by local dns. It would be great if you helped me to configure eth0 to use local dns for only queries to local zone.
    Sorry for my bad english.

scanning the manpage, this jumps up:
    usepeerdns
Ask the peer for up to 2 DNS server addresses. The addresses supplied by the peer (if any) are passed to the /etc/ppp/ip-up script in the environment variables DNS1 and DNS2, and the environment variable USEPEERDNS will be set to 1. In addition, pppd will create an /var/run/ppp/resolv.conf file containing one or two nameserver lines with the address(es) supplied by the peer.
check if you have userpeerdns in your configuration file, this options makes ppp overwrite /etc/resolv.conf

  • Set up reverse DNS for virtual mail hosting

I need a bit of server configuation advice.
I have a static IP and two public domains on a Snow Leopard server connected using NAT behind a firewall - with the necessary port forwarding to ensure all works.
    1. abc.com is my primary domain on the server - server.abc.com
    2. I have xyz.com set up as a virtual domain and also as a virtual mail host
This setup has worked well for a long time but I have found that emails to [email protected] are going missing.  If I check my mx records using one of the web based tools it show an error on the reverse dns for server.xyz.com showing a reverse DNS of server.abc.com.
So the question - is it possible to have secondary 'virtual' DNS record on the server so reverse DNS works for the virtual mail host xyz.com?  If not how do I handle the reverse DNS problem which i think is causing some external mail server to reject mail due to the inconsistency on the reverse DNS lookup?
    Many thanks for any suggestions

SMTP requires a DNS A record.
A DNS A record is also known as a machine record.
A DNS A record inherently means that forward DNS and reverse DNS will match.
The forward translation translates the host name to the IP address.
The reverse translation translates the IP address to host name.
When the full translation produces the same host name, that's an A record.
DNS CNAME records are aliases, and are used for virtual hosts.
CNAME records inherently do not match the reverse DNS translations.
To get your configuration to work, your server must have an A record.
That means forward and reverse DNS will match.
Any of the virtual hosts within your mail server then all use an MX pointing at the A record host.
If you have your DNS hosted somewhere other than your ISP, then you'll need your ISP to set up a DNS PTR.
The DNS PTR is the reverse translation; address to name.
If you have your own DNS services within your network (as would be typical with a privately-addressed NAT'd network), set that up as a virtual host within SMTP.
Here is some related reading on external (public) DNS, as related to SMTP servers and such.

  • For server the Node Manager associated with machine is not reachable

    Hello all,
I am getting this error, when i start my Managed Server which is in shutdown state
For server SAA-Dev-1, the Node Manager associated with machine vm-bea-dev is not reachable.
All of the servers selected are currently in a state which is incompatible with this operation or are not associated with a running Node Manager. No action will be performed.
    The configuration details are
i am using weblogic 9.2 MP3 version in windows 2k3 server.
It has a machine vm-bea-dev, a cluster cluster-saa-dev, to which both the managed servers saa-dev-1 and saa-dev-2 are assigned. There are 3 applications deployed onto managed Server 1 and 1 for managed Server 2.
Managed Server 1 is in shutdown state, and when i start the server, it gives the error specified below
For server SAA-Dev-1, the Node Manager associated with machine vm-bea-dev is not reachable.
All of the servers selected are currently in a state which is incompatible with this operation or are not associated with a running Node Manager. No action will be performed.
The same for Managed Server 2 too, and this server is in Admin State, i dont know how it went into that state.
Can somebody please help me reslove it.
    Thanks in advance

Actually the cert is coming from your Dev machine but it is sending the Prod cert.
What cert is used by your admin server ? It should match the host name.
So your Dev machine is apparently using a copy of the prod cert / keystore rather than using its own DEV cert. It's not clear from your post whether this is the nodemanager using the wrong cert, or the managed server. So both should be checked.
The managed servers need to be using a cert that matches their host name. If you have a managed server on VM-BEA-DEV, then the cert needs to be CN=VM-BEA-DEV. You can also use a load-balancer CN name in the cert if you have the cluster's HTTP values set to match.
In your nodemanager.properties, are you explicitly accessing keystores, such as with:
    KeyStores=CustomIdentityAndJavaStandardTrust
    CustomIdentityAlias=some_alias
    CustomIdentityKeyStoreFileName=some_path_to_keystore
    CustomIdentityKeyStorePassPhrase={3DES}...
    CustomIdentityKeyStoreType=jks
    CustomIdentityPrivateKeyPassPhrase={3DES}
In my multi-machine clusters, I have multiple certificates such as:
    admin machine1:
has a cert for use by the admin server and NM that matches the host name ( with node manager.properties entries such as the above )
has a 2nd cert that matches the load-balancer name for the cluster - used by the managed servers
    all other machines:
has a cert for use by NM that matches the host name ( with node manager.properties entries such as the above )
has a 2nd cert that matches the load-balancer name for the cluster - used by the managed servers

  • Server 2008 R2 with WSUS need to specify location for Feature install for Server 2012 and Windows 8

Having a problem where we need to add .net 3.5, amongst other things, in server 2012 and windows 8.1.  We're using WSUS on server 2008 R2, so when I go to add roles or features, I'm not able to as it tries to use Windows Update but it's set to use WSUS.
I'm aware in server 2012 gpo's that you enable the policy 'specify settings for optional component installation and component repair' in Administrative Templates>System, however that setting is not available in Server 2008 R2.
I've downloaded the templates from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36991 but the setting is still not there.
Any suggestions on how to do this/allow feature install with Server 2008 R2?

    Hi,
To upgrade the Administrative Templates, please run the downloaded msi file, then copy the needed admx files and adml files to the PolicyDefinitions folder.

run by root on the machine who's IP address is changing. If the machine
is hosting a parent directory (NetInfo or LDAP) or is connected to a par-
ent directory, then the Open Directory path to the node must be used (eg
/LDAPv3/192.12.0.43). Otherwise use a dash ("-") for the directory node
argument. The tool may prompt for an admin user name and password for

Strictly speaking you do not need Application Server or OHS for running Apex, you have an option in ApexListener. If it is a small installation then stick to EPG that comes built-in.
Try downloading the Oracle HTTP Server from here . You will need to check the commercial aspects yourself as OHS is not a free software for Production environment, AFAIK.

Where do I get proxy server addressesto insert in my setup of the add on.....Premium Proxy Switcher 1.0.10?

    Thank you for checking, Tom,
I'm confused. What do YOU get when you push the feed button? And why is it working on yours and not either of my machines?
Today, my Mac (w/Safari 4) gets the same error message: Safari can’t open the page Safari can’t open the page “feed:http://vibrationalvoyages/vibrationalvoyages.com/DivineLight_Vibrations_Principles_andApplications/rss.xml”. The error is: “The feed could not be loaded because the content is not in a known feed format.”
My little ASUS (with a Linux operating system) gets a screen that says "The requested URL was not found". The URL on that page is http://vibrationalvoyages./vibrationalvoyages.com/DivineLight_Vibrations_Principles_andApplications/rss.xml
On both error messages, the URL I was checking was:
    http://www.vibrationalvoyages.com/DivineLight_Vibrations_Principles_and_Applications/Divine_Light_Vibrations_Principles_ andApplications.html
The last URL was, of course, the URL generated by iWeb.
    So, my question still is:
HOW CAN I GET MY FEEDS TO WORK PROPERLY? If the problem is there shouldn't be an http:// after feed: then, how do I get iWeb to set it up properly?
    Any ideas?

  • DNS for multi-site same server scenario

I setting up the DNS for a multi-site server, I understand that the second (and subsequent) site needs to be an alias of the first.
I have tried setting up the DNS entires as aliases (CNAME) as well as A records to no avail.
I am sure that it is me, but what am I missing?
I am unable to access these sites locally so I am positive that no on can access the site outside of the firewall.
    Thank you!

There's not much detail there to go on...
In general, yes, you should create one A record for the host, e.g.:
    webserver.domain1.com. IN A 192.168.1.2
Then other domains should, ideally, point to this via a CNAME:
    www.domain2.com. IN CNAME webserver.domain1.com.
Technically, it's OK to have additional A records pointing to the same IP, it just makes it a little harder to keep track of, and changing server addresses is a PITA (there's only one place to change it when using CNAMEs).
As to what your issue is, there's no way of knowing without seeing your domain records and the name server logs. bind is pretty good about logging errors and often provides a good clue when things are amiss. If I had to hazard a guess, though, I'd say you missed a trailing . on the CNAME records, but that's largely a shot in the dark without more information.

    Hi Robert,
Just to add, you can ask questions related to windows Server 2008 R2 in the forums which don't contain Windows server 2012/R2. In general, we suggest asking questions based on this main parts, such as GPO or network, you just post the
questions to the related forum in the link above. If you don't know which is the best forum for your question, you can ask in Windows server general forum.

  • DNS for Multiple Domains

I am trying to figure out the proper configuration for DNS that will support multiple domains. I have DSN working now for just one domain.
My XServe has a static IP connected directly to cable modem and is the master nameserver. I also have an Ubuntu server with static IP connected directly to cable modem that is the secondary (slave) nameserver.
On the XServe, I currently have a primary zone created for domain1.com. with:
    * an A record for domain.com. (Fully Qualified) and the same static IP as the XServe
    * an A record for ns1 (not fully qualified) and the same static IP as the XServe
    * Aliases for ftp, www and mail (not fully qualified) mapped to destination ns1.domain1.com. (Fully Qualified)
Nameservers under the Primary Zone is ns1.domain1.com. and Mail Exchangers is ns1.domain1.com. with a priority of 10.
The reverse zone is getting created appropriately for me as far as I can tell. I am able to access www.domain1.com just fine as well as mail and ftp.
Now I want to add a new domain2.com to this master nameserver. I know that I will need a new Primary Zone for domain2.com. to be recognized and to setup it's aliases?
Can I use the same static IP or do I have to have a unique static IP?
Can I use the ns1.domain1.com. nameserver or does the new domain2.com need new nameservers?
    Does domain2.com have it's own A records?
Does the mail exchangers need to be different for domain2.com?
It seems like all the documentation and information that I can find are just for configuring one domain and not so much for multiple domains. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Spotted Dog

Don't think of subsequent domains as being any different from the first domain.
For every domain you need to provide certain information, including a list of the hostnames within that domain. There is no relationship between 'www' in domain1.com and 'www' in domain2.com (unless you point them to the same address, but that's a different issue).
Any host record in the zone can either be an A record (where you specify an IP address) or a CNAME (where you specify another hostname that it maps to).
In the case of your web server handling both domains you could set 'www.domain2.com' as an A record with the appropriate IP address, or you could set it as a CNAME with a value of 'www.domain1.com.' (essentially saying 'www.domain2.com has the same IP address of www.domain1.com, so go find that address').
It's also possible to use cross-domain records for things like name servers and mail servers - in other words you can set your MX record for domain2.com to mail.domain1.com (essentially saying that domain2.com's email is handled by mail.domain1.com).
Can I use the same static IP or do I have to have a unique static IP?
That's not a question for DNS. What you're defining are the hostnames in that domain. If you have one server (e.g. a web server) that can handle multiple domains (e.g. one apache server handling web traffic for both domain1.com and domain2.com) then, sure, you can use the same IP address for both.
If, on the other hand, you have specific services that cannot be multi-hosted (e.g. HTTPS) then you will need different IP addresses.
Can I use the ns1.domain1.com. nameserver or does the new domain2.com need new nameservers?
Sure, it's entirely possible to use domain1.com's name servers for domain2.com.
    Does domain2.com have it's own A records?
It can do, or not, as you choose. If you're running www.domain2.com on the same server as www.domain1.com then you could use a CNAME record to point www.domain2.com to www.domain1.com.,or you could set an A record with the same IP address.
The result would be the same, but the CNAME has the advantage that if your IP address changes you only need to change your DNS in one place (www.domain1.com) and all the other addresses would automatically follow.
Does the mail exchangers need to be different for domain2.com?
Not at all, if your mail server is configured to handle mail for both domains it's entirely possible to specify mail.domain1.com as the MX record for domain2.com.

  • DNS/DHCP app no longer sees DNS/DHCP server.

When I moved the majority of my Netware 6 servers to OES-NW last year, I started using iManager to handle admin duties for DNS and DHCP.
With a planned move to OES-L coming up, I tried accessing both services using the DNS/DHCP java console.
While I am able to log into that console, I am unable to see my DNS/DHCP server or any of the expected components for either service (DHCP pools, zone records, etc...).
I have tried both the console that is installable from the server and the newer LDAP-based version.
I have tried both 32 and 64-bit versions on XP and Windows 7, respectively.
Since I want to move those services to OES/Linux and the java console is the only mechanism that can administrate the services on that platform, I am perplexed.
My needs are simple, and I could easily move those duties to a SUSE server or even a Windows server, but that is not my preference.
Any ideas on where to begin troubleshooting are welcome.

You have more than one DNS-DHCP locator object in your tree, and the
console is picking up a/the empty one. Find the proper object (look at
the other tab in consoleone or imanager to see if it's connected with
servers zones and the like), and delete the superflouos ones.
This is an *extremely* common problem when OES gets introduced into a
tree, as it by default creates new locator objects in the server
container, if it's not configured otherwise.

RIGHT!  Worked it out!    It wasn't firewall in the end at all, it was that the SAP B1 installation isn't aware of SQL Server 2008 R2 (version 10.50.x.x).
The vbscript was looking for the presence of SQL Server 2008 (version 10.0.x.x) in the registry and not by scanning ports or suchlike.
If you use the autorun installation from this folder; E:\BusinessEvolution\Software\SAP_Extract_via_WINZIP it should work fine - I've modified the checksql.htm to look for SQL 2008 R2 and now autorun goes past that first problem.
Not sure if that will be any help to you? In that instance I think we were installing 8.8 PL17...
The upgrade frpm there to 8.81 PL07 worked fine
