Servers/VMs per pool

Is there a best practice document out there with recommendations/hard limits for the number of servers that should be in a pool or number of vms that should be in a specific pool?
I'm trying to determine how many servers per pool I should go with as a standard in our data center.

It might be helpful in defining my question: this is the output from the Oracle VM Manager Template deployment script [note again, that this is an Oracle Server Template consisting of Oracle VM Manager to be run as a virtual machine inside Oracle Server:]

  • Maximum number of Edge servers within a Pool for Lync 2013

I see no reference as to the maximum number of Lync Edge servers within a pool. Does it follow the same as that of the Front End, and so, no more than 12 per pool?
Also, can you have more than one edge pool within the same data center? I don't see why not, though validation is needed.
    Thanks,
    Christian

  • Adding RAM to Servers in the pool, manager doesn't see the new value.

We recently updated all of the servers that make up our OVM Server Farm from 8G to 16G however when I click on one of the servers in the pool using the Manager it still displays the old value of 8G. One way we found to update the value was to delete and add the server back into the pool. Once we did that it displayed the new value, however I can not use that on the Server Pool Master as it will not allow me to delete the pool master node.
I tried using the Metalink document 467663.1 to assign one of the other servers to be the pool master, but the documentation seems flawed.
When following Scenario 3 you pretty much move all VM off the new and old pool master, remove the server you want to be the new pool master then edit the existing pool master's entry to be the new servers IP/hostname. However when I attempt to edit the server pools information the server name/IP is not editable only the machine name is.
Does anyone know of an easier way to update the RAM listing for the server pool master? Or is there updated documentation for moving the server pool master? I'm using version 2.1.5

You may also delete the whole Server Pool, taking care NOT selecting the various "ALSO DELETE FILES FROM REPOSITORY" options.
I repeat, DO NOT SELECT THOSE CHECKBOXES.
If you have running VMs that you cannot shutdown during this process, ticking the "force Server Pool Delete" box will do the trick, leaving all the VMs normally running and working in the background.
After that, you can recreate the Server Pool, add the correctly configured Servers to it (NOW YOU'LL SEE ALL THE PHYSICAL RAM YOU'VE ADDED), and finally manually discovering all the running VMs already in the repository.
To do this, use the "Resources --> Virtual Machine Images --> import --> Select from Server Pool (Discover and register)" option.
Remember to APPROVE each discovered VM to see it back happily running in the main menu.
Finally, you can eventually manually discover all the Templates you may have had in the Repository before starting this process.
To do this, use the "Resources --> Virtual Machine Templates --> import --> Select from Server Pool (Discover and register)" option. You'll have to APPROVE in the end, too.
This is just a workaround, I agree that there should be a "refresh" option for Servers Configurations, or at least a way to remove and re-add the Server Pool Master too.

  • Front End servers within same Pool on different subnets

The customer is looking to have Amazon AWS host Lync 2013, and despite Lync 2013 having built in HA via Pools, Amazon wants to split the Pools across two of their availability zones (AZ ). An AZ is nothing more than a metropolitan area network, or simply
a data center located a few miles away. Essentially they want to split the Pools between their two AZs.
I know that for Lync 2013, the only stretch Pool supported is the Persistent Chat server Pool, and that Front End Pools, Edge Pools, or Mediation Pools are not supported.
Amazon states that the latency between their AZs is from 1 - 5 ms, which is well within tolerance, though they state that the AZs all have unique subnets.
I know that none of this is supported, though I am being requested as to why it isn't.
Forgetting about latency, is this not supported because all servers within a Pool must share the same IP subnet? Is this coded within Lync that only Pools within the same subnet will work? I think it is as with Lync 2010, a stretched VLAN was required for
a FE Pool to work, which implies the same subnet.
While on this, a Central site does not mirror that of an AD Site, where a Central Site is a reflection of Pools within an area. So can a Central Site span two AD sites? I believe the answer is yes when one considers that a remote branch office can also be
its own AD site. The reason for asking this question is I am attempting to see if if the Central Site might also have something to do as to why stretched Pools aren't supported.
    Thanks!
    Christian
    Christian Frank

    Hi Guys,
Just saw both of your responses. I totally agree that it isn't supported, and what Amazon has been proposing is essentially adding their HA via a redundant AZ so that their infrastructure is redundant, which is their HA (I don't agree!).
What I am looking for is something a bit deeper as to why. For example, when Lync 2010 had the stretched FE Pool between two locations, it was done via a stretched VLAN, which implies that the servers on both ends must be on the same subnet.
Amazon wants to stretch all the Pools, between their data centers, so they can say that the Lync infrastructure is highly available, though at each data center, the subnets will be different, and that is what I am attempting to validate.
I know this isn't supported, though is it because the members within the pool would come from different IP subnets, and Lync 2013 is coded to expect fellow members to be within the same subnet? That essentialy is what the case of Lync 2010 FE Pools was when
they stretched them. And if you go back to Exchange 2007, stretched VLAN was back then a way to create geo-clustering also, which is no longer the way.
Frankly, I think it has to do with subnet, and I believe it has to do with how the Windows Fabric is written, and what it is expecting to see. I really think this is the case, which explains the whys as to how stretched Pools are no longer supported any
    longer. Yes?
    Thanks!

  • Lync 2013 - Number of FE servers in paired pools

    Hi,
We have an Ent. Edition Lync 2013 pool with 4 FE servers, we would like to implement a second pool at a different location for disater recovery.
Does the DR pool which will be paired with production one need to have exactly the same number of FE servers or can it have less (i.e. 3) ?
    Thanks for your help,
    Luca

You can have 1, or 3, or whatever number, it just has to be Enterprise to match Enterprise, you can't use Standard Edition with Enterprise for example.
    Per: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj204697.aspx
"Each pool in a pair should have the capacity to serve all users from both pools in the event of a disaster."
That's not a statement on the number of servers, just the capacity to do what you need to do if you fail.  It's sort of an obvious statement that speaks to load sharing among pools.  Don't max out two pools and expect to be able to fail over to
one and run at full capacity.
In a DR situation, you may not need full capacity, so the amount of resources you'll be giving it will be based upon your own internal best practices.
Edit: And finally, yes I've done exactly what you're asking, it's fine.

  • Few users are unable to sign in after we added 2 more front end servers in existing pool?

    Hello,
We have recently extended the Lync 2010 Enterprise pool with 2 Front end servers.  Now we have totally 6 Front end servers.
After this change some users are unable to login. Error message: "Cannot loggin as server is temporarily unavailable"
Captured, client logs and received the following:
    ms-diagnostics: 4004;reason="Credentials provided are not authorized to act as specified from URI";
We have the following security settings on the newly added front end servers:
Network security: Minimumsecurity for NTLM SSP Based clients - set to - Require 128-bit encryption
In other existing front end servers, it has been set to - No minimum.
    Questions:
    1. Is that the issue for signin failure?
    2. Do we need to change this option to - No minimum in new servers and reboot it?
    Please advise. MUCH THANKS.

    Hello
Those clients running in Windows 7 OS. And the error is different:
"Cannot loggin as server is temporarily unavailable"
    Thanks

  • Merge Lync 2013 Edge servers in same pool

    Hi guys.
    - We had Lync 2013 FE STD version.
    - We have added one more Lync 2013 FE STD and done front end pool pairing.
    - We had single Edge Pool, soo only 1 EDGE server being in 1 POOL.
We wish to add another Edge server and put previous and this new Edge server in one pool.
This is a printscreen of our current Edge Deployment.
Because we have a federation enabled with external partners who had put in their lync configuration
to trust to our public external address of current edge server: LyncEDGESIP.domain.com, we would like to avoid sending them new address and we have decided to keep that public address and make it EDGE POOL NAME where both edge servers would be inside.
Now we are little bit confused/amused what to do next.
If use LyncEDGESIP.domain.com to be FQDN of EDGE POOL with 2 two edge servers, what would we need to do with our current edge server.
    What to put for:
Access Edge Service public address on both edge servers
Web Conferencing Edge Service public address on both edge servers
A/V Edge Service public address on both edge servers.
    bostjanc

    Go with cutover migration if you can take downtime. Here is the high level summary for your reference;
Remove existing edge server from topology and publish the changes.
Create a new edge server pool in topology builder.
Make sure that access edge , web conference edge and AV edge name remains the same.
Publish the topology and run the setup on both edge servers. You need to configure external and internal IP addresses based on Lync topology.
Replicate the configuration change and run the deployment wizard.
Import the certificate and start the services.
Create additional DNS A records for load balancing externally.
    Thanks

    I just resolved my issue.
On both of the servers that were having issues, I renamed the cluster.conf file, and then tried to add again...and it worked.
It seems that VM Manager was unable to update the existing cluster.conf file which had some old information in it...so I just had it create a new file.
Cluster.conf is located in /etc/ocfs2. Hope this helps.

  • Deploying mediation servers in a pool from 2 different location in a mediation pool

    Hi All , Good day
Can anyone suggest me the better approach in deploying a new mediation server in a branch location
we are planning to deploy a new mediation server in location 2 (lync 2010)
Adding the new mediation server in location 2 to the existing Lync Mediation pool in Location 1 (pool already has 2 servers) –
Will it cause any quality issue to existing location 1 users / any additional considerations ? (i mean the mediation pool will have 3 servers - 2 from same location , 1 from other location)
Creating a new mediation pool for location 2 à associate it with location 1 FE pool
à but no new PSTN gateway
à can we use the existing one with a new DNS name  ?

    Hi Rajbabu,
Mediation Servers at the central site can be used to route calls for IP-PBXs or PSTN gateways at branch sites. If you deploy SIP trunks, however, you must deploy a Mediation Server at the site
where each trunk terminates. Having a Mediation Server at the central site route calls for an IP-PBX or PSTN gateway at a branch site does not require the use of media bypass. However, if you can enable media bypass, doing so will reduce media path latency
and, consequently, result in improved media quality because the media path is no longer required to follow the signaling path. Media bypass will also decrease the processing load on the pool.

  • Max number of VMs per free ESXi hypervisor?

    VMware Community,
I've just installed the free ESXi 5.5 hypervisor and I'm wondering if the same virtual machine limits apply to the standalone scenario as vCenter? Can I actually run 512 VMs? What, if any, is the max number of VMs I can run on a free version of ESXi?

As of ESXi 5.5 most limitations were removed and only an 8 vCPU limit per virtual machine remains. So unless I'm mistaken, the mentioned 512 VM per host (see http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere5/r55/vsphere-55-configuration-maximums.pdf) apply to the free Hypervisor too.

  • AAA Servers toggles per WLAN

Dear Team, i have a Controller based Installation with 802.1x Auth via ACSSE and AD. The Controllers running 4.2.173.0. 2 ACSSE are configured. Since a few Days we see Problems with Client Authentication. The WLC Log shows, that the WLAN toggles between the 2 Radius Servers:
    84 Tue Dec 9 09:29:19 2008 RADIUS server xx.xx.xx.xx:1812 activated on WLAN 2
    85 Tue Dec 9 09:29:19 2008 RADIUS server xx.xx.xx.yy:1812 deactivated on WLAN 2
86 Tue Dec 9 09:29:19 2008 RADIUS server xx.xx.xx.yy:1812 failed to respond to request (ID 148) for client <Client-MAC> / user 'unknown'
Does anyone know, under which Conditions, Timeout etc the WLAN changes the Radius Server? Since we dont run 5.x , we cant use the dedicated Radius Fallback Feature. Has anyone seen this Problem? Regards, Michael

After working with TAC, I resolved this issue recently.  Increasing the timeout value did not help. On the WLC, try:
    config radius aggressive-failover disable
    As per http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_configuration_example09186a0080665d18.shtml :
If the aggressive failover feature is enabled in WLC, the WLC is too aggressive to mark the AAA server as not responding. But, this should not be done because the AAA server is possibly not responsive only to that particular client, if you do silent discard. It can be a response to other valid clients with valid certificates. But, the WLC can still mark the AAA server as not responding and not functional.
In order to overcome this, disable the aggressive failover feature. Issue the config radius aggressive-failover disable command from the controller GUI in order to perform this. If this is disabled, then the controller only fails over to the next AAA server if there are three consecutive clients that fail to receive a response from the RADIUS server.

  • VMs per Windows Server 2012 Std License?

    Hello All,
Can anybody help me please? I have a question in Windows Server 2012 Std License.
    1. If I have 2 Windows 2012 STD Licenses ( 2 CPUs) howmany VMs ( Windows 2012 Server OS installed) can I have on the same Physical Server?
    2. Can we assign more than 1 license to a host?
    3. If the limit is 4 VMs( 4 Windows server 2012 Std VMs) can we have more/other VMs ( like Linux) in-addition to 4 eligible VMs?
    Thanks in advance,
    Sudhir

In the Hyper-V world, virtual machines are not licensed. Microsoft does not require that you purchase a license for a virtual machine, ever.
Microsoft does require that you purchase a license in order to run a virtual instance of Windows, always. So, if you have 3 virtual instances of Windows Server Standard, then you need to purchase two Windows Server Standard licenses for the host, because
each license allows for up to two virtual instances of Windows Server Standard.
Since Microsoft does not require that you purchase a license for a virtual machine, they will not charge you to run non-Microsoft operating systems inside them. Whether or not you have to pay for a Linux virtual instance is entirely dependent
upon the licensing of that Linux distribution. Any checks you write for them wouldn't be to Microsoft, though.
This means that, yes, you can legally run an unlimited number of Linux guests on Hyper-V without paying additional licensing fees to Microsoft. If you are using Hyper-V Server and have no Windows guests, you won't pay Microsoft anything. If you are using
Windows Server with Hyper-V and have no Windows guests, then you have to pay for a single host license but you won't pay Microsoft anything else.
In the scenario that you presented, the necessary Microsoft licensing for a dual-core host with WS12-Std installed, 3 WS12-Std guests, and any number of Linux guests will be covered by two WS12-Std licenses. You have one leftover WS12-Std instance that
you can legally run on that host.

  • BUG in VDI 3.1 printer settings per pool?

We make use of VDI 3.1
Our users are directly connected to virtual Windows XP machines.
For a number of users I want to make use of an USB printer connected to the SR.
    I'v created a queue:
    # /usr/sbin/lpadmin -p printer01 -v /tmp/SUNWut/units/IEEE802.<mac-address>/dev/printers/Prolific_Technology_Inc.2305-202
    # /usr/bin/enable printer01
    # /usr/sbin/accept printer01
I opened a regular solaris session on the SR and tested if the printer with the "HP LaserJet 6P" gets installed in the VM with the following command:
    /opt/SUNWuttsc/bin/uttsc -r printer:printer01="HP LaserJet 6P" wxpvm
    That worked.
So i opend the Sun VDI managment interface and went to Pools, selected a pool, tab settings, checked Use Customized settings
Saved settings and opened the "Edit Sun Ray RDP Settings"
I added a printer + driver combination like:
    printer01="HP LaserJet 6P"
Because it is the only printer it becomes the default printer.
I put my token in the SR and from the desktop selector screen I select a VM from the pool I've added the printer to.
The SR tries to connect but after a few seconds the VDI login screen reappears..
I tried again but the again after a few seconds the VDI login screen reappears..
I did some reading and after some time i've found a solution.
Because the printer i need is an default Windows printer the driver gets installed form c:\windows\inf\ntprint.inf
For the "HP LaserJet 6P" printer this file has a line:
    "HP LaserJet 6P" = HPLJ6P.GPD ,Hewlett-PackardHP_La1EE3,HP_LaserJet_6P
I modified this file by adding an extra line to it like
    "HPLaserJet6P" = HPLJ6P.GPD ,Hewlett-PackardHP_La1EE3,HP_LaserJet_6P
Then I went to the VDI administrator interface removed the printer i added earlier an added a new one:
    printer01="HPLaserJet6P"
This time when i tried to connect to the VM i got logged in and the printer was installed like it was supposed to.
My conclusion is dat the VDI 3.1 scripts which reads the pool settings contain a bug.
A printerdrive containing a space " " is not handled like it should be
Has some one the same experience or has someone an updated script which I can use so that I can use the original printer driver description?

I tried with 6 GB RAM in the machine instead, when the machine was using 1.97 GB (according to the VDI interface), and it still comes out with the same error messages.
How about those iSCSI error messages I am getting? "Desktop Kubuntu 9.10 failed to start, probably due to failed iSCSI login, retrying..."
There shouldn't be anything else I should do besides activating the iscsitgtd service, is there?
I can see that the ZFS file system with the VM is shared through iSCSI:
    root@vdi:~# iscsitadm list target -v

  • VM Server 3.0.2 -Unable to add servers to new server pool

    Hello everyone,
Please forgive me if I'm missing something obvious. I am new to Oracle VM, and just setting up a test platform for the first time. (used virtualbox before).
I have a network environment that has 2 VM servers, 1 VM Manager (all 3 machines running on separate physical boxes). I have a 70Gb SAN share connecting with iSCSI from a freenas host. I have been able to see both VM servers as unmanaged, and can see the SAN share as Unmanaged iSCSI Storage Array. It let me create a test server pool, and allocate the SAN share as an available resource. When I attempt to add either of the VM Servers to the pool, I get the following job failure with error:

    End of Job
I have tried rebooting, rediscovering both servers, which complete successfuly. I just can't seem to get them to join any server pool that I create.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Jim

I have a network environment that has 2 VM servers, 1 VM Manager (all 3 machines running on separate physical boxes). I have a 70Gb SAN share connecting with iSCSI from a freenas host. I have been able to see both VM servers as unmanaged, and can see the SAN share as Unmanaged iSCSI Storage Array. It let me create a test server pool, and allocate the SAN share as an available resource. When I attempt to add either of the VM Servers to the pool, I get the following job failure with error:Can you check /var/log/ovs-agent.log on the two servers as you try to add them to the pool? I'm not seeing any specific reason for the error in that output, which is annoying.
Also, double-check that DNS is working across all the machines: the Manager and the two Servers need to be able to resolve the hostnames of everything else on the network, so if you don't have DNS fully configured, you'll need to edit the /etc/hosts of all three machines first.
