Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:

Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, does an iTunes install go through properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

When I try to download theupdate to iTunes, it goes through all the steps until the final one, then I get an error message "Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services", then the download stops. Any ideas on how to rectify this?

Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with updating iTunes. You may want try downloading the latest iTunes update directly from the Apple site. When you are installing it, be sure you are logged in as an administrator:

Go tot the Apple support troubleshooting area I had the same problem. You have to remove all the apple stuff in a particular order then reinstall/dowmload i tunes again it worked for me, a pain yes! Having read a few threads about the problem, I uninstalled ITunes and tried downloading the new version. I had the same problem but managed to fix it with Amy ; the apple advisor. Here are the steps!
First of all, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed. You can download it from here. These instructions will NOT work for iTunes 8, 9 or 10 anymore. If you’re unsure, just uninstall iTunes then re-install with the latest files.
Next, you need to manually copy the Mobile Device Support directory from a working machine to your Windows 7 computer. Luckily, I have conveniently provided these files for you. You can download them here:
64-Bit iTunes 11.0.2: Please click here to download this directory for 64-bit Windows.
32-Bit iTunes 11.0.2: Please click here to download this directory for 32-bit Windows.
Once you download that file, you need to Unzip it to this directory. IMPORTANT: Make sure you unzip the CONTENTS of the zip file, don’t just copy over the zip file:
32-Bit: Unzip to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple
64-Bit: Unzip to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple
There are a large number of files in that directory, so it may take a little time, please be patient.
So, after unzipping, you should have a new folder “Mobile Device Support” in the Apple folder
64-BIT ONLY STEP: If you have 32-bit Windows, skip this step. It seems that Apple has put the “Drivers” in a separate location (don’t know why). You will need to download the drivers separately. Please click here to download the files for 64-bit Windows.
Once downloaded, you need to Unzip it to this directory. IMPORTANT: Make sure you unzip the CONTENTS of the zip file, don’t just copy over the zip file:
Unzip to: C:\Program FIles\Common Files\Apple
So, after unzipping, you should have a new folder “Mobile Device Support” in the Apple folder
Next, we have to merge the registry entries that will install the Apple Mobile Device service.
First, download the registry entries that I have provided for you here:
64-bit iTunes 11.0.2: Click here to download the registry entries for 64-bit Windows.
32-bit iTunes 11.0.2: Click here to download the registry entries for 32-bit Windows.
After you download the registry entries ZIP file, unzip it to your desktop and double-click each to install it. Say “Yes” to any prompts or confirmations about adding it to the registry. There are 2 entries, make sure you click BOTH and add BOTH to the registry.
Now, we need to install the correct driver for your iPhone / iTouch. Windows 7 incorrectly identifies the device as a digital camera. To fix this:
- Plug in your iPhone / iTouch (don’t have iTunes loaded at this time)
- Go to Device Manager (Click Start, right-click Computer, then click Properties. In the window that appears choose “Device Manager” on the left)
- Scroll down and find “Apple iPod” or “Apple iPhone” or “Apple iTouch”. It will likely be under the “Portable Devices” category.IMPORTANT NOTE: If your device is already listed under “Universal serial Bus Controllers” and not Portable Devices, you can skip these steps and go to Step 7.
- Right-click the Apple device and choose “Update Driver Software…”
- Choose “Browse my computer for driver software” in the window that appears
- It will ask you for a location; you want to Browse to this folder (location is the same in 32 and 64 bit Windows):
32-bit and 64-bit: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
- Click Next
- It should find the driver for your device; let it install that driver
Once you complete these steps, reboot your computer. Once you reboot everything should work exactly as expected!

I was getting an update and it would not load so I tried to uninstall and reinstall. Now when it reinstalls it gets to the end and it comes up with the following error message.

After a recent iTunes update my iTunes failed to start. I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it again, but during installation an error message pops up saying: 'Apple Mobile Device' failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start the system services. The three option buttons which can be clicked are 'Abort', 'Retry' and 'Ignore'. I tried pressing ignore, which allowed iTunes to install. However, it seemed that not all parts off the programme installed, as it wouldn't allow me to open iTunes again. While downloading the newest iTunes update I received several errors. The latest one being this: "Service 'Apple Mobile Device' (Apple Mobile Device) failed to start. These are the steps that I have already taken: un install iTunes (several times), reinstall iTunes (several times), move the .dil files to my desktop (although I have no idea what to do with them now)... I am still getting the same error while trying to download 1. the service error and 2. iTunes failing to open because it isn't properly installed. Can some one PLEASE be so kind as to help me with VERY simple step by step directions. I'm usually more computer savvy than the average user, but I'm feeling computer illiterate at the moment. I deleted all Apple products you mentioned above (iTunes, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Software Update and Bonjour), deleted the prior downloads I had previously tried to install and then emptied my recycle bin. Then I started with a new download of iTunes before the problem was solved for me.
It really ***** that Apple does not give any direct support for its own products.

HT1349 Trying to install latest iTunes for Windows 7 64-bit. Keep getting this error message "Service 'Apple Mobile Device' (Apple Mobile Device) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."

Initially iTunes would not run although it had been running quite well up until now. Suddenly received this error on PC start-up "The program can't start because MSVC80.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." Research on Net pointed me to iTunes as the issue. Tried to start iTunes and received that message again. Tried installing latest version of 64-bit iTunes and received the subject message part way through the install: Trying to install latest iTunes for Windows 7 64-bit.
