Service battery notice!

I have the first Intel based Macbook (2006) white.  Battery model: DP ASMB016.  Under System profile the charge remaining is 3620.  Full charge capacity is 3769 and the cycle count is 240.  This is my second battery in 5 years.  The battery icon says 96% when plugged in not 100% but I'm using the power cord since it's not good to run it with the notice. Currently, using battery, the charge drops pretty quickly.  When I ran it off the battery right before the warning the charge % dropped more than usual. The pull down box says service battery, but it appears to hold a charge but I don't see where it says battery is running at (blank) capacity.  Question is does anyone know what could be wrong with the battery, and do I need to replace it with a new one? When I replaced the initial factory battery after only just over 2 years it wouldn't turn on, so I knew it needed replacing and before going out I never received the service battery notice like this time.

If the battery life is okay but the software says service required, then ignore it, sometimes the algorithms can go wrong. Especially when the battery has only gone through 240 cycles. Does the area of the battery under the mac get very hot when the mac is on charge? if so, then that may be causing severe damage to your battery, heat + batteries is a very damaging formula, hope I helped a little, good luck :)

  • Service Battery Issue

Today after resetting the SMC in the morning and using my computer until roughly about an hour left of charge to go (roughly 30% left), I turned off my computer and left it for about 30 minutes as I commuted home in the afternoon. Came home to find that my MBP 4,1 wouldn't boot - I plugged into power, it booted and the battery told me "Service Battery" as I charged it to about 50% and reset the SMC again. I just finished off the calibration process, and here are my stats:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 4122
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 4423
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 171
    Condition: Normal
I'm thinking for a battery that has a cycle count of 171 and it's less than a year old (this MBP travels with me everywhere) that this is unacceptable. I called Apple today and the representative agreed that it is below standards (but that was prior to the calibration, I had a full charge capacity of 4300 before calibration) and that when I take it to the Apple Store tomorrow that they should look into it.
Do you think there is a good chance that they will replace my battery for me with stats that I currently have?
    Thanks!

You're lucky this is happening within a year of owning the macbook.
My MBP started giving me the service battery notice just after with about 240 cycles. Well below the 1000 the website tells you to expect.
Maybe I'll pay for a new battery, but a whole lot of threads here seem to suggest that will only make the problem worse. I'm currently still getting 3-4 hours out of a charge

  • "service battery" after upgrading to Mountain Lion

I tried restarting the SMC of my laptop and it didnt work. prior to updating to Mountain Lion, my battery life was still okay. but after updating, it drains fast and it says that I need to have my battery replaced. "service battery" How did that happen overnight?? and is there any way for me to fix this problem??

Today it happened to me too. Service battery notice. Current charge 0% (*huh*, how can it still be running...)
This is already my third battery in my early 2008 MacBook Pro. I have the feeling that:
    1. OS X upgrades kill my batteries: I had to replace the battery after upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6 and now from
        10.7 to 10.8.
    2. The MacBook Pro early 2008 is a very bad series:
         - Display "clamshell" has been replaced due to broken LED issue (only half the LED's lighting up after sleep)
        - Logic board had been replaced (bad NVIDIA GPU)
-- Both these issues have been solved under Applecare, luckily.
         - Battery has been replaced 3 (THREE!) times in 3 years. The average lifespan of a battery is slightly less
          than ONE year.
For me - personaly - these issues are really the limit. After being a loyal Apple user for more than 6 years I feel quite disappointed.
I will contact a European Apple "Premium" Reseller this week to see what they are prepared to do.
Since I live in the South of the Netherlands I would have to travel about 180 km to the nearest real Apple Store (Amsterdam). The warranty has long expired, so perhaps now is the time to stop wasting money on repairs and buy a cheap € 400 laptop on linux instead of another € 139 battery...
I really, really hope that the Service Battery issue is a (bad) joke and an update of OS X will solve the issue.

  • MBP has "Service Battery" then disappears. Also screen turns black once in awhile when watching videos.

My MBP recently has the "Service Battery" notice, but disappears after I charged my laptop and hasn't returned yet. Also, my screen turns black once in awhile when I am watching videos, but cannot get it back lit so I have to restart it.
Do I really need to "service my battery?" And what do I have to do in regards to my scrren turning black?

Service Battery means replace battery as soon as possible.
Occasional black screen problem may be related to the battery condition.
You may have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.
Power related issues can be  resolved often by resetting SMC.

  • Service Battery appeared again along with fast battery drain on Mavericks 10.9.4 with iTunes 11.3

I upgraded to Mavericks on my MacBook Pro about a month ago and bluetooth connection problems with my Bose Mini Soundlink and UE Boom were resolved but everything else went haywire from the dreaded Service Battery message, email, to wifi issues. After a few days of hair pulling and looking for solutions, the problems just went away, and everything went fine again. Two days ago iTunes came out with an update and I installed it. I first noticed the battery lost capacity from 87% down to 74% with just 299 cycles on it. Now the Service Battery warning is back and the battery doesn't seem to last that long anymore. I've removed Google Chrome, done SMC reset, battery reset, and the whole kit and caboodle of tricks from forums but none worked. I tried removing iTunes but I can't. I have a lurking idea this is a software issue. Any tricks out there to get this back into shape?

  • Mac Book Pro Service Battery Options

    Hi, I have a Mac Book Pro 5,5 mid 2009 13'.
The battery status shows up as "service battery". Can anyone tell me what are my options and also if I don't do anything, what are the consequences.
    Here is my battery's info.

  • Service Battery Warning

Hello,I have a 2011 MacBook Pro, it currently has 504 charge cycles and is giving me the service battery condition warning. However, I have not noticed any significant difference in battery life as the apple website said should occur as I reach the Service Battery warning. Do I really need to have my battery serviced right now, or is the computer just programmed to give me a service battery warning after a certain number of cycles?

Batteries will die when they want to.  Some just stop working even though they appear OK.  Others gradually lose duration.
Cycles do not matter.  Some batteries die at 200 cycles and 3 years, some die at 1800 cycles and 6 years.

  • "Service battery" msg after installing ram

Hello, I have some trouble with my macbook (6.1 with OSsl 10.6.8).
I installed some RAM yesterday (up to 4GB from 2GB, 2x 2GB SODIMMS) and everything was OK.
I wake up this morning and opened the lid (I didn't shut down last night) and macbook is "dead", like the battery is drained, but the led in front side was lit.
Anyway I connected the power and tried to start the system. Nothing, I closed the lid and opened it again and it started, once I went in OS I realized that the battery is at 57% so it doesn't make sense on why it shutted down...
Also it says at the battery icon "service battery" now, even if it seems to function normaly and the cocconut battery is not reporting anything unusal.
When I installed the new RAM I unplugged the battery from the main board to avoid any static electricity damage, I installed the RAM and then just plugged back the battery.
I followed a picture by picture guide from ifix it (just in case it helps) and didn't touched anything else, or at least I think so.
I reopened and unplugged/plugged the battery on the board again but nothing changed.
Any idea on what I possible did wrong or umplugged by accident?
    Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the double post, but I can't find any edit button.
I noticed that the behavior from this morning is coming back again when I close the lid for more than a few minutes.
When I open the lid the monitor is not open and after I press the power button for a few moments to close and press it again it is like recovering the last session from a battery drain fall asleep.

  • MacBook Air 13" 2012 / 5,1 - Service Battery on 293 Cycles? Terrible!

I just noticed the 'Service Battery' under power options. The machine isn't even 2 years old! I've had a magsafe board and trackpad replaced in less than 12 months under AppleCare - now this? I mean we pay the Apple Tax for premium quality products right?
    Charge Information:
    Charge Remaining (mAh): 2917
    Fully Charged: No
    Charging: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 4605
    Health Information:
    Cycle Count: 293
    Condition: Service Battery
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): -1091
    Voltage (mV): 7561

Sometimes the battery gets 'confused'  - perform an SMC reset. Also, Apple officially refers to a battery as a consumable so when it fails under normal use it isn't considered a warranty item but there is a great deal of leeway so head to an Apple store to try for a warranty replacement. And if you get a no from one genius or location try another, or try for a second opinion.

  • "Service Battery" after recalibration and SMC reset

I purchased a unibody 13'' MacBook Pro 13 months ago (and didn't have the foresight to buy Apple Care, oof) and I've lately been running into some battery issues.
I live overseas and I've been traveling a lot recently. I just moved into a new apartment and finally settled in. Within a few days I noticed that my battery was only lasting about 2 hours. I figured it was because I am forced to use a VPN for most my websites. Anyway. Using an app called Coconut Battery, the capacity of the battery was about 78% of its designed 5450mAh.
I recalibrated my battery last night and woke up to find the battery life had not improved. Following the Apple guide, I rest the the SMC and PRAM.
After it rebooted, it now says "SERVICE BATTERY." The battery got up to 99% charge and stayed there for over an hour before it finally charged. But now, my capacity, after only 70 cycles, is 52%, 2859mAh.
What would cause such a dramatic decrease in battery capacity for my laptop?
What are my options for remedying this issue? Draining the battery and attempting to recalibrate again?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 2859
    Fully charged: Yes
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 2859
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 70
    Condition: Check Battery
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 262
    Voltage (mV): 12587

When you get the service battery message the battery needs to be replaced - it  is like the service engine warning lamp on a car or the robot waving its arms and yelling "Danger Will Robinson."
If you have Apple's 3 year AppleCare you may be able to get the battery replaced under warranty - Apple says the battery should retain 80% of its charge after 1000 cycles and you didn't even get 1000 cycles out of it. Even if it isn't still under warranty you can at least ask for free replacement or a price break since it failed before reaching 1000 cycles. I know people who have been successful with such an appeal.

  • Service battery after upgrading software - not under warranty

    Hey guys,
I have a Macbook Pro from early 2009 with the problem in the title. I'm not under warranty anymore, and my battery has 246 cycles. The service battery indicator appeared shortly after updating to 10.6.something - I'm not sure what, I just know it had been a while since updating. If I take this into Apple is there any chance of them covering replacing it or am I SOL on this one?
    Thanks!

Yes, that's correct, prepare to pay.  For instance, let's say you bought some new Pirellis (those are tires) for your Lamborghini, and the guy at the tire store told you that you would get 15,000 miles on them (these are for your Lamborghini, so they won't last 30,000 miles like some tires do).  So you head on out with your Lamborghini, and within 10,000 miles all four tires have lost their tread, three of them having blown at various times on the freeway.  But hey, it's your fault, I'm sure it has nothing to do with the tires.  Just like with your battery.  I don't think you should be thinking your Mac is giving you bad information or charging your battery incorrectly, based solely on the fact that about TEN THOUSAND other Mac users have noticed the same issue.  It's undoubtedly that your battery wore out, even though Apple says those batteries last (at a minimum) 300 cycles.  Or the fact that users have done a battery reset with PRAM and SMC reset, and had their batteries start to fully recharge again.  I wouldn't rely on that.  I would instead rely on people who reply with an absolutely worthless comment, as if they actually worked at the Apple Store. But hey, that's just my opinion - I'm sure a lot of people think Snow Leopard has been FLAWLESS, with no issues whatsoever.  In fact, I would say that for a BETA release, Snow Leopard hasn't been bad at all (wait, it's not a beta release, you say?  Hmmm....).
Lookf for a post that covers PRAM and SMC reset.  You could start with this one....https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2139186?start=1530&tstart=0

  • Service Battery after charging in Foreign Country

Hello, I am currently visiting Japan and today is my second day here. After coming here for two days, my mac popped up a message saying Service Battery.
Before coming to Japan, I've used my laptop in Malaysia for 6 months and UK for 1 year and nothing happened.
This only happened after charging my macbook in Japan with a converter. Could it really be my macbook battery needs replacement or is it under-powered?

Hello buddy, thanks for your swift reply. I just notice while investigating the plugs and converters, I saw that the plug converter (sorry for the misunderstanding there, its a plug converter) has an output of 250v whereas my macbook charger description only indicates its 100v-240v.
Would that extra 10v cause this to my macbook? The solution that I hope will work is to drain out all the 250v from the battery and recharge it at a 240v outlet.

  • "Service Battery" Help

I noticed that the service battery indicator has appeared on my Macbook Pro. I downloaded an app called battery health that gave me this information:
    Current Max: 2815/5770 mAh
    Health: 49%
    Details:
    Cycles: 396
    Age: 1.5 Years
    Manufacture Date: Dec 18, 2012
I purchased my Macbook in March of 2013, and I haven't replaced the battery before. I'm a little dubious that the battery could fail so quickly but I am a heavy user as I use this computer for business. Anyone have any suggestions?

You should bring your MacBook Pro into an Apple store and have them run diagnostics on it.  It may be that the battery is bad, but I have seen where an issue with the logic board can show that the battery needs service.
If you have AppleCare then it should cover any repair needed.

  • Do I need to replace my battery or is this a mavericks thing?  (Service Battery)

I just updated my operation system a few days ago to Mavericks and I noticed that I'm getting a "service battery" warning. Possibly a coincidence but I'm not sure how many cycles my battery can take.
According to Coconut Battery, I've gone through 307 cycles and my battery's capacity is at 75%.
I've read that a lot of people are seeing this since updating to Mavericks so my question is:
Is this a flaw and do I have some more time left on my battery or is Mavericks that much better at telling you when your battery needs replacing?

Run it down to about 20% and recharge, see if it still says to service.  If so, take it to Apple store genius bar and have the techs evaluate the battery.

  • Battery Status:   Service Battery

I installed Snow Leopard today and I noticed that the battery menu in the upper right corner is reporting "Service Battery". I hardly use the battery (I have had it for a little over a year and I have only gone through 79 cycles). As a result, I will admit that it is possible that I did not notice that it was reporting "Service Battery" when I was still running Leopard. However, it is strange how I did notice it the same day that I installed Snow Leopard, so I suspect Snow Leopard might have something to do with it.
My battery information from System Profiler is as follows:
    *Model Information:*
    Manufacturer: Sony
    Device name: ASMB012
    Pack Lot Code: 0000
    PCB Lot Code: 0000
    Firmware Version: 0110
    Hardware Revision: 0500
    Cell Revision: 0303
    *Charge Information:*
    Charge remaining (mAh): 3123
    Fully charged: Yes
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 3249
    *Health Information:*
    Cycle count: 79
    Condition: Check Battery
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 12351
Perhaps a battery calibration would fix this?

    Everyone who is using "Snow"!!
_*Please read and try the solutions mentioned in the KB Article that scalawag linked. This will eliminate all the "me to" postings in this thread.*_
If you already tried all the mentioned suggestions, then you will have no alternative but to purchase a new battery. If your computer is still under its one year warranty and/or you have Apple Care, call Apple first to let them know.
If your computer is NOT under warranty, take computer to your nearest Apple Store or AASP. It's possible you may need to pay out of pocket. However, that is up to Apple.
Your other recourse is to call Customer Relations 1-800-767-2775 (US). Non US customer will need to call Apple Support & ask to be transferred over to CR or ask for their phone number.
    Good luck everyone!
