Service Battery...

Hi,
I was shocked to recently discover that according to the battery menu in my menu bar my battery needs servicing. I've had my MacBook Pro for around a year and it's running Snow Leopard. System Profiler says:
Charge Information:
Charge remaining (mAh): 2819
Fully charged: No
Charging: Yes
Full charge capacity (mAh): 4945
Health Information:
Cycle count: 484
Condition: Check Battery
Battery Installed: Yes
Amperage (mA): 2525
Voltage (mV): 12466
I've heard this is a bug with Snow Leopard, is it a bug on my Mac or do I really need to change my battery?

484 cycles in one year is extremely heavy battery use. In the course of accomplishing that, you probably drained the battery all the way down until it could no longer run the machine many, many times, and that's a battery-life-shortening pattern of usage. If possible, take it easier on your next battery.

  • Service Battery Goofiness

Last evening I was using my MacBook, watching videos on Youtube and what not. I had plans that night, so I just closed the lid and got up and left. The computer usually falls asleep and when i get home I just open the lid, and everything is right where I left it. Yesterday I was gone for about four hours, I don't remember how full the battery was when I left, but when I got home, I opened the lid, and screen flashed, and the computer when to sleep. I tried turning it on and nothing happened. I plugged it into the wall and it turned on. The battery read 0%, and it said "service battery," which was weird, it only has about 151 cycles and 88% health. As it was charging it said it only had 9 minutes, and I was thinking no way is it going to charge fully in nine minutes. I charged it till it said about 19% and I took it off the wall; the battery read 94% full, and about 3.5 hours which is normal. It no longer said to service the battery. I turned it off, let it fully charge, and called it a night. This morning I got up, turned it on, the battery was full and said three and some hours of life left. I started to check my email, Facebook, Youtube, and all that stuff. Then suddenly the computer just goes to sleep again. The lid was open, and the battery was still about 95%-ish. I plugged it into the wall and turned it on, the battery read 0% full and "service battery," as I am typing this, it jumped back up to 94% and no longer says I need to service the battery. I usually, let the battery get down to halfway before I charge it, and I always take it off the charger when the battery is full. Could this be an issue with Lion maybe, or the battery. It's a new battery as of February. Any ideas?

Hi, I have lost 2% on my maximum battery charge. It now *suddenly* charges up to 98% claiming that the battery has to be serviced - again. This is already my 3rd !! battery in 3 years.

  • After upgrading to OSX 10.7.4 it says "Service Battery"

Just upgraded to 10.7.4 and my MacBook Pro (mid 2010) now says "Service Battery". I have
reset the SMC, with no results
completely discharged then recharget the battery, no results
    Repaired disk permissions, no results
Verified the disk, appears to be OK so won't repair it.
The battery status was "Good" until I updated.
Anyone with the same issue? Any suggestion on how to solve this?

    Hi,
It all is a lot confusing because in that article and others it says the battery of my MBP (builtin battery) doesn't need to be calibrated.
I actually followed the directions in
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490
reference from your post above " pre-calibrated "  at time of purchase.
This does not preclude " re-calibrating" as general maintenance.

  • My MacBook Pro laptop says 'service battery' and doesn't charge very well but my Mac is 5 years old. Is it worth buying a new battery or do you think I should buy a new mac?

    Hi guys,
I can only leave my MacBook Pro unplugged for an hour maximum and it never seems to fully charge. It says on the Mac to service battery - which I guess means buy a new battery.
I have had my MacBook for over 5 years now and it does get used probably every day, if not every other. If I brought a new battery would it all work normally again or is it getting old and do I need a new one?
Also, my charger seems to be playing up a bit now as well. It's seems to be temperamental when I plug it in and takes to while to light up and charge.  I've attached an image of the battery bit on my laptop as the lead seems to be fine - is this normal?
    Thanks in advance guys.

Is there any application(s) that your current Mac cannot run that only a new can?  Calculate the cost per year of your current MBP and compare that to the cost of a new battery.  Spread the battery cost over a year or two of additional operation, how do the dollar amounts compare?  If the MBP is functioning properly, I generally find it is more cost effective to keep it.
If the retina display and the SSD storage are very desirable from your perspective, then that becomes a different matter.  You are the one to make the final decision.
    Ciao.

  • The battery for my macbook pro 13 says "service battery".  Now I want to get a replacement but the reviews for it are horrible! Does anybody have any suggestions?

The battery for my macbook pro 13 says "service battery".  Now I want to get a replacement but the reviews for it are horrible! Does anybody have any suggestions? I don't want to spend 130 dollars on something I'm going to have to replace in less than a year (which is what normally I been reading)  I do design work and I take my mac everywhere.  Having to always look for a plug or having to be constantly plugged in doesn't sound ideal to me.  Please help me. what should I do???

Why does it matter if it a scam????? I'll let you figure that out by yourself.  If I'm going to replace it, why should I be contempt with a battery that I have to replace within months (as stated by some people in the comments). The issue here is not if I should or not replace it OBVIOUSLY I'm going to have to before it starts going crazy.  The underlying issue is why is the replacement battery for a lack of better words " a bit crap."  It comes with a 3 month guarantee?? Is that a joke?!??!?! Some people complained it malfunction after only 8- 9 months? I'm sorry but as an Apple fan I think it's absolutely rubbish. I know there is no magic cure I'm just hoping someone shines the light on how crappy this replacement is.

  • Service Battery error message for a battery that looks ok

    Hello,
I have a 13 inch Macbook Pro with model number 5,5 and after upgrading my hard drive to a WD scorpio black 750GB and also adding 8 GB of Kingston memory I get a Service Battery error message. My OS is 10.6.8. The strange is that my battery is in a fairly good condition. I did check with coconut battery and it looks ok. I also add a print screen.
Does anyone knows how can I remove this error message ?
Do I have to replace my battery ?

Service battery means replace battery as soon as possible.
Reset SMC and see whether it changes the notification.

  • My Macbook Pro mid 2012 says service battery?

It happened yesterday, I was using my laptop as normal and I accidentally touched the Magsafe charger and it was scalding hot along with my Macbook so I stopped using it and let it cool down for a few hours. When I came back, the Magsafe charger refused to charge anymore on my Macbook and my daughter's laptop and now my Macbook says Service Battery.
Looking around, it seems I'm going to have to shell out for a new battery AND a new charger? I hope this is not the case.
I am abroad and there are no Apple stores I can take it into, what can I do?

  • Macbook Pro does not turn on, service battery

Heres the backstory. One day, my mac simply wouldnt turn on. No video, no chime. Just one indicator light turns on, then turns off a few seconds later. then turns back on. After that happened, I brought my laptop to school the next day and plugged my friends charger into my computer and it worked. I got home and used it as a desktop for a while keeping it charged and plugged in. Then I needed it for school, so I unplugged it, and it couldnt come on again, exacty like before, just the indicator light coming on and off. i brought it home and charged it to full again, and it turned on, but it only worked if it was charged. if the charger led was green, it would work but if it was orange, it wouldnt. When it did work, under the battery status read "Service Battery." So I used it as a desktop, and then it froze, i force shutdown and now, even though charged, does the indicator light thing.
tl;dr, when i press the power button, nothing happens except the indicator light turning on then off then on again. Not sure if it is problem with charger, or my "Service battery," All i know is that when i use my friends charger it works, but mine gives the problem stated above. Worked for a while when charged to 100%, now doesnt.
MBP 7,1 33 months old tried smc resets, pram resets, didnt work.
    Any help is appreciated, thanks.

OS X is telling you that the battery isn't working, so it has to be replaced. When you see "Service Battery", it means that your battery has to be replaced.
In Early 2008 and older MacBooks Pro, you can buy the battery at the Apple Online Store and replace it yourself. If you have a newer MacBook Pro, take your MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or reseller to have the battery replaced.
It's normal that batteries fail after years because their capacity goes down with charges

  • Late 2013 macbook pro showing Service Battery warning after 1 year and 2 months

    Hey there,
I purchased a 13" MacBook pro retina late 2013 in December
The battery has recently started showing the "service battery" warning. Here is a screenshot from Coconut Battery:
Surely after only about a year the battery should not be holding only 70% of the charge. Is this level of wear unusual? If I were to take this to an apple store would Apple likely replace it even though it is out of warranty?
    Cheers guys.

unfortunately, the batteries warranty is only one year.  The only options were the ones they gave you: buy a new battery (which I recommend), or use your mac on the power supply only without the battery.

  • "Service Battery" after 106 cycles, 1 year

When I got my MBP, I got an second battery, because I expected to sometimes have long periods without access to AC power. In order to wear the batteries down evenly, I decided to (under normal circumstances) use each battery for a month at a time, calibrating each at the start of its month. Each battery was marked on its bottom (the side you can't see when it's installed) in magic marker, with the one coming with the computer being 1, and the other being 2.
When the computer was a little over a year old (and, unfortunately, I did not extend Apple Care), I began to have problems with the original battery. Specifically, when I swapped it back into the computer after using #2 for a month, and I began to go through the calibration steps, when I got to the step of disconnecting the AC power, the computer only ran for a few minutes then shut off without warning. After that, the computer indicated "Service Battery".
This was a few months ago. I have just been using the second battery alone meanwhile, but would like to try to resolve this situation--hopefully, without having to buy a new battery.
This is what System Profiler says right now about this battery:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 0
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 221
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 106
    Condition: Check Battery
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 1580
    Voltage (mV): 12515
The menu bar charging indicator says (0:17), and the menu itself says "Service Battery" and "45% full".
Is there anything that either I can do myself, or that a Genius at an Apple Store could do, to save me from the cost of buying a batter to replace this one? I believe Apple feels that their batteries should last at least 300 cycles over three years. Mine only got to one-third of that.

    Condition: Check Battery
You need a new battery. Take your computer to an Apple Store. The staff will be able to check to determine if your model MacBook Pro qualifies for a free battery.

  • Service Battery appeared again along with fast battery drain on Mavericks 10.9.4 with iTunes 11.3

I upgraded to Mavericks on my MacBook Pro about a month ago and bluetooth connection problems with my Bose Mini Soundlink and UE Boom were resolved but everything else went haywire from the dreaded Service Battery message, email, to wifi issues. After a few days of hair pulling and looking for solutions, the problems just went away, and everything went fine again. Two days ago iTunes came out with an update and I installed it. I first noticed the battery lost capacity from 87% down to 74% with just 299 cycles on it. Now the Service Battery warning is back and the battery doesn't seem to last that long anymore. I've removed Google Chrome, done SMC reset, battery reset, and the whole kit and caboodle of tricks from forums but none worked. I tried removing iTunes but I can't. I have a lurking idea this is a software issue. Any tricks out there to get this back into shape?

  • Service battery appears

Hello, i bought my aluminum macbook in april/may of 2009. Over the past couple of days, i have been experiencing much shorter battery life, along with the message under the battery menu, "service battery".
As of right now, the istat widget reports that the battery has went through 335 charge cycles, and battery health has been fluctuating, right now it is at 54%, but last night was 71%.
Could the battery problems be purely a software problem, or is the problem with the battery itself? Should I buy a new battery?

    Try resetting the SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Which is about the only software thing you can do.
My guess is that you've killed the battery--that's a lot of cycles for just about a year. I bought mine at the same time you did and I have 79 cycles. More reading:

    Hello,
Ever since I upgraded to the mavericks operating system I have had an error message stating Service Battery. • Help macbook pro battery 'Service Battery' ?

I got an old mac book off newegg in September it was a macbook pro late 2006 model with the duo core processor. It originally had 2 gb of ram I wanted more so I ordered some now I have 4 gb of ram.Keep in mind I ordered the correct ram for the macbook pro. I installed it,now ever since then it says Service Battery. I even tried to take out the battery for 5 minutes then put it back in the 'Service Battery' is still there when you roll over the battery. This is my 2nd battery I have had with this mac book I purchased it in October.
Here is my current battery info:
      Model Information:
      Manufacturer:          SMP
      Device name:          ASMB012
      Pack Lot Code:          0002
      PCB Lot Code:          0000
      Firmware Version:          0110
      Hardware Revision:          0500
      Cell Revision:          0200
      Charge Information:
      Charge remaining (mAh):          0
      Fully charged:          No
      Charging:          Yes
      Full charge capacity (mAh):          2863
      Health Information:
      Cycle count:          94

      Battery Installed:          Yes
      Amperage (mA):          2333
      Voltage (mV):          12085
They told me to go to the genius bar to see if it is the battery or the mac book itself.
I just am freaking out because I can not afford another mac book nor battery and I just got this battery I have now in October.

I am sad to tell you that you did not order the correct RAM for your MBP.  The maximum RAM for a Core Duo MBP is 2GB.  You indicate that your problems commenced with the installation of the excessive RAM.  This strongly suggests that there is a correlation.  I would recommend that you put back the old RAM and see if the problem goes away.  If not take it to an Apple store.  There may be residual effects from the wrong RAM that may need to be addressed.
    Ciao.
PS:  I also have a 2006 Core Duo and my response has been done on same.  I still think it is a great MBP, slower than the new ones but does the same things, plus I like the silver key board.
