Services/apps running, status symbols - what is all this?

I have my first (very basic Motorola Citrus) smartphone, with only the 150MB/month data plan.  I'd like to turn off unnecessary stuff, but I have no idea what half the status bar symbols mean, or what all the apps running are.   Only some of the symbols appear in the (very thin) user manual or online help, and as far what shows up in "Running Services" - none of that is explained anywhere.  I have no idea if it's safe to turn any of this off - if that will speed things up, stop a data hog, or have some big negative result.  Again, NO INFO available anywhere about this that I could find.
Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance...

Here is a link to the user manual.  It is a bit thinner than other manuals I have looked.
The status bar symbols are on page 10 (pg 12 of the pdf)
You might want to turn off sync to limit background data transfer. page 43 (45 of the pdf)

  • My Time Capsule is giving me a warning that  double NAT situation is occurring and recommends that I set it to bridge mode What is all this about please can it be explained in layman's terms and not martian thank you.

My Time Capsule is giving me a warning that  double NAT situation is occurring and recommends that I set it to bridge mode What is all this about please can it be explained in layman's terms and not martian thank you.

You have two devices....the Netgear and Time Capsule both configured to act as routers on the network. You only want one device providing this service.
I suggest that you configure the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode as suggested to eliminate the Double NAT error. Unfortunately, the Guest Network cannot be enabled in this setting.
No other adjustments are needed and everything else will operate normally...and the Time Capsule will still be providing your wireless network signal.
Once the Time Capsule is configured in Bridge Mode, it would be an excellent idea to perform a complete power cycle on the network to allow things to reset properly.
Just power off all devices on the network in any order that you want
    Wait a minute
Start the Netgear device first, and let it run a minute by itself
Start the Time Capsule next the same way
Continue starting devices one at a time the same way until everything is powered backup
The other option you have is to "ignore" the error and the light will turn green. The Double NAT error may...or may not cause some issues for you down the line. The next time that you update the Mac operating system, or update the firmware in the Time Capsule, it may likely change the Time Capsule to Bridge Mode automatically.
If your Guest Network "disappears", you will know why this happened, and you will have to manually configure the Time Capsule again in Router Mode to provide DHCP and NAT services.
Double NAT can also cause a slow down of web page loading. You may...or may not....notice this.

  • Myfi is running very slow, what can cause this?

Myfi is running very slow, what can cause this?

Either a service problem in your area or a glitch/hardware problem on the Jetpack.
To determine service problems simply travel to a different area and rerun your speed test.  If the problem persists then its a glitch/hardware problem on the Jetpack.  If not then its a service problem in that particular area that would need to be addressed by VZW or improved with the usage of antennas/boosters.
When performance testing be sure to use a tool that is universal to better illustrate the problem.  For example a common utility is to speed test using www.speedtest.net.  Run this test a few times to build an average and then perform the same tests in a different location or after changing something around.

  • Ok, What is all this "other" taking up space on my iphone and how do I get rid of it? It's taking up almost half the space on my phone.

Ok, What is all this "other" taking up space on my iphone and how do I get rid of it? It's taking up almost half the space on my phone.

"Other" includes data such as iPhone settings, contacts, calendar events, Safari bookmarks/cache/cookies, email and email attachments, SMS/MMS/iMessages, notes, app data, Safari cache, cookies and bookmarks, stored passwords, search index, home screen organization, wi-fi network data, etc.  It should normally be about 1 GB.  Yours in an indication there may be corrupt data on your phone.
Unfortunately the best solution to fix your issue is a restore. Back up your phone, then restore it using iTunes.  Follow this guide:http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414.

  • Background Apps Running? How to Close all of them?

When I run an app I notice there's no button to actually exit that app. Is it still running in the background? When I double click the home key I see many apps in that list. I can remove them one by one, but that takes too long.
Is there a way to remove all of them at once?
Do these apps drain the battery ?
    Thx

All you can do is touch and hold until the red circled minus icon appears then tap on each. When an app is not being used it is placed in the background and is inactive. All apps sit in and run in memory, so they consume no more power running than when inactive except for what additional CPU usage is involved when an app is active, but only one can be active.

If I'm not mistaken, all the IO stuff is related to USB and FireWire devices, right? I had my iPod plugged in when I got he Kernal panic as well as running Disk Warrior on an external FW HDD.

"Question only for the Super Elite"
That is presumptuous on your part. Questions posted on a forum should be directed to ALL.
And your thread title is really bad. You should put some hint as to what your question is in the title.
Now that that is out of the way, I would suggest disconnecting all external devices except for your mouse and keyboard, running for a while and then reconnecting external devices one at a time in an attempt to isolate the offending device. I'm inclined to suspect external HDD.

  • What about all this spam on iphone!

Help! I have a great filter system on my mac and all spam hits the bulk mail folder for deletion, however, on my iphone I spend most of my time deleting spam messages manually. I have been to apple store with no success - they say there is no way to keep the spam out. I think that there must be a way! Suggestions please!!

    RonAnnArbor:
You prove my point beyond even my expectations.
I said the additional SPAM was not a result of the iPhone.
I also do not think that it is even part of AT&T.
What I said is that is is interesting that my email SPAM has reached a magnitude higher than I ever experienced since registering my phone approximately 35 days ago.
You merely fortified what I said by telling me that your SPAM has doubled/tripled in the last 30 days. Makes me wonder where all of this SPAM is coming from since I registered my iPhone. Hackers!!! - Hmmm!!! Somebody selling a list of new iPhone users. Not a coincident at all. Think about when you registered your iPhone and when you started getting double the SPAM.
As I said I have been using AT&T for cell phone service for over 12 years and never experienced as much SPAM as since I registered my iPhone.

  • What is all this "Other" stuuf and how do I get rid of it? PLease help!!!

I had to restore my iTouch and it;s working fine now but my computer shows that it has like seven gigs of "other" content that dos not show up on my iTouch. This much space being taken up is preventing me from actually putting my music on my iTouch. Can anybody help me out?

Do you have any apps such as Air Video, VLC or ZumoCast that allow you to convert or sync media for use offline? Or any PDF readers that may have large PDF files associated? Any RSS readers or other aggregators that could have large caches of internet material?
In my experience these are the sorts of apps that generate a lot of 'other' content. Sometimes it's easy to forget what files you have associated with these apps.

  • What's all this about ID Profile?

Just read another thread where someone tested their BB speed and the results included a message like: IP Profile for your line is - 2500 Kbps.
His problem (it was initially slow speed) was solved by recommending that the connection not be reset and after a few days the profile would increase and the speed would improve.
    What's that all about?
    Thanks.

  • What's all this about?

I was happily browsing the UK newspapers when a notice suddenly appears on the screen ...
Yellow triangle with lifebelt.            The file Updateinfoplist couldn't be
    that cannot be activated.               opened
Cancel / Open Intego backup assistant
                                                           (highlighted)
I didn't ask to open the file Updateinfoplist and the browser screen I had
selected was   in the background as it should have been so I clicked on
cancel … and the screen went away.
Could anyone explain if I should have done anything different.
    Big thank you.

    Hello Etresoft.
Thank you for your patience; I suspect this matter will go over my
ability level quite soon.   However I think the following might show
    something of interest.
I have a Backup Intego Assistant app in my applications folder.
I have clicked on this and it produces a screen with four or five
panels but no reference to an uninstaller.
The left hand panel is headed scripts and has 2 entries.
    1.   A lifebelt + Backup + Warning bell icon.
    2.   Two semi circular arrows with the word Synchronization. (sic)
The right hand panel has mini panels marked source, whatever +
    various options.
I'm thinking the warning bell icon may be connected to your thought
that the app may be out of date because I half remember an update
being offered some time ago which I ignored as I didn't understand
    what it was !!!
Funny thing is the app is there; it produces the screen but the trolley
DMG says there is nothing to uninstall.
Its late now so I will have a closer look at the macrumors suggestion
in the morning … but if you have any observations about the notes
    above ???.
    More grateful thanks.
