Services in Safari 4

I make frequent use of WordService in Safari, specifically the Rotate-13 function, as a forum I frequent commonly uses Rot13 for spoilers when discussing games and such.
In previous versions of Safari (including 4.0 beta), I was able to select rendered text and rotate it in place. Since upgrading to 4.0 final, all of the options in the Convert service are grayed out unless I've selected editable text, meaning if I want to read a Rot13'd post, I have to click the Reply button, copy/paste it to another document, etc. So what used to be a really awesome feature has now become "useful, but annoying." I'm pretty sure this used to work in Adium chat logs as well, but now it doesn't, so maybe it has to do with WebKit itself.
Is this a new bug, or did they finally fix a (desirable) bug from previous versions, or what? Does anyone even know what I'm talking about? lol

It's not a problem with the service itself, but rather a change in the way that Safari/WebKit handles text. Like I said, it worked just fine until this most recent update. It's definitely related to changes in Safari/WebKit, as now I get the same result with other services as well. WordService was just an example (and the service I use more than any other, save CalcService).
Safari/WebKit used to let me perform actions on rendered text, and now it doesn't.

  • Website not asking permission for using location services in Safari iOS 6

Website is not asking permission for using location services when using Safari mobile  on iOS 6.0 (iPhone 4s)
    Steps to replicate:
    1. Go to http://maps.google.com using Safari
    2. Choose "allow" to use location services
    3. Close Safari and wait 1-2 minutes such that the arrow sign (in the top right) disappears
    4. Go to http://www.nature.com/news/economics-and-genetics-meet-in-uneasy-union-1.11565 using Safari
    5. The arrow sign (in the top right) appears showing that the location services are used when viewing http://www.nature.com/news/economics-and-genetics-meet-in-uneasy-union-1.11565 (even few hours later)
Why the site http://www.nature.com/news/economics-and-genetics-meet-in-uneasy-union-1.11565 is not asking permission to use location services?
The Nature journal (site: ww.nature.com) is not affiliated with Google in any way as far as I know!

I figured out how to stop this from happening. I did 3 things, and I'm not exactly sure which one of them did it because I did them all at the same time.
    1. Turned on Private Browsing
    2. Cleared Cookies and Data
    3. Turned off JavaScript
This stopped time.com from using my location without permission.
I then turned off Private Browsing and went back to the same page, and it continued to NOT use my location.
I'm thinking JavaScript being turned off might be the solution. However, there is a bug that causes JavaScript to turn on again without permission at times:
    http://appleinsider.com/articles/12/12/21/ios-6-bug-reenables-javascript-in-safa ri-without-user-consent
So just be aware of that. But hopefully doing the above works for you!

  • How to add shared services in Safari

I ran Onyx to rebuild the LaunchServices in /Maintenance/Rebuilding. After restarting the Mac I discovered that the Share button in Safari now shows "No Service". Prior to that I had services like Evernote, Facebook, Twitter and maybe some others that I never used.
I tried several ways to re-enable that function but nothing worked.
Anyone has an idea of how to restore these Shared services (not the Shared Links)?
    Best regards.

This issue fixed in OS X 10.10.1 Yosemite.

Since I upgraded to Yosemite, I get a grayed out "No Service" message when I click on my email icon link (square box with arrow point up) on Safari. • No "Convert to * Chinese Text" service in Safari for Snow Leopard

The services "convert to simplified chinese text" and "convert to simplified chinese text" don't seem to work in Safari under Snow Leopard. It works if you're in a text box, but not for text on the page itself (it worked under Leopard).
Is this a problem with my system, or do others have this problem too? Is a fix planned, or is this a "feature"? (sigh)
This is useful when reading webpages written in traditional (simplified) chinese for those who are better at reading simplified (traditional) characters.
    Test it yourself:
Highlighting this traditional chinese character should allow you to access the "Convert to Simplified Chinese Text" service: 車
Highlighting this character should allow you to access the "Convert to Traditional Chinese Text" service: 车
    Thanks

    Is a fix planned,
Only Apple would know, and they never provide such info. Make sure you tell them you want this feature back via Safari > Report Bugs to Apple and

  • Can't access Youtube & other google services with Safari (maps, translate...))

    Hello,
since I got my new Macbook (retina 13") several google websites don't work anymore.
    - Youtube
    - google maps
    - google translate
    - google play
    - google books

It's only a problem with Safari, as soon as I use a different browser like Opera or firefox, everthinks works.
If I use Safari I get the message:
    "Safari can't connect to Server"
It never worked with the new Macbook, so I think it can't be a problem of a particilar software installed on my Macbook.
    Thanks for you help.

Is there an y Proxy server selected?
    Safari > Preferences > Advanced
    Proxies:
    Click "change settings"
The network preference window  will open up.
Under "Select a protocol" if any box is checked uncheck it.
Click "ok", then "Apply".  Close the window.

  • Service: save image from safari

I have a folder on my comp that I save cool images to as I come across them online. In the past I've always dragged the image into the folder or saved to my desktop and later moved it into the folder.
I'd like to set up a service for safari so that when I right click on an image I can save it directy to my "cool images" folder without having navigate there each time. I just want to click once and know it's there.
I've tried to figure out how to copy the image to the clipboard and save to the new location, but I've hit a wall and don't really know the best way to go about it. Any ideas?

Ah! You want a definitive answer and don't want to do the work yourself. Sorry, if I had one, I'd pass it on, but if the links I posted don't lead you to one, then I surmise that it doesn't exist. I'll leave you with this classic:
+"As the drill will not penetrate the granite unless kept to the work hour after hour, so the mind will not penetrate the secrets of mathematics (or other sciences) unless held long and vigorously to the work. As the sun's rays burn only when concentrated, so the mind achieves mastery in mathematics, and indeed in every branch of knowledge, only when its possessor hurls all his/her forces upon it. Mathematics, like all the other sciences, opens its door to only those who knock long and hard. No more damaging evidence can be adduced to prove the weakness of character than for one to have aversion to mathematics; for to have aversion for mathematics means to have aversion to accurate, painstaking, and persistent hard study; and, to have aversion to hard study is to fail to secure a liberal education, and thus fail to compete in that fierce and vigorous struggle for the highest and truest and the best in life which only the strong can hope to secure."+

  • Cannot log in to Google "Accounts" with Safari

I cannot seem to login and use Google Services with Safari 2.04.
This started when I discovered I was unable to log in to google calendar in Safari, and became a support ticket to Google (which is still pending) and is really confounding me.
What happens is that I go to go to http://www.google.com/accounts and attempt to login. Once I hit the submit button, accounts page plainly refreshes. However, if I put in a totaly invalid user or password, I will get a message telling me the user or pass is invalid.
In Firefox, if I attempt the same scenario from google.com/accounts, after submit, I get the page that shows me all the services available for me to use, like gMail, calendar, etc.
    Here's what I've already tried.
    Safari troubleshooting...
    - backup/remove ~/Library/Safari
    - backup/remove ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari
    - backup/remove ~/Library/Caches/Safari
    - backup/remove ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconfig.plist
    - backup/remove ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist
    - backup/remove ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
    - backup/remove ~/Library/Cookies
After removing all the above, Safari is basically back to Apple's factory default settings. Even after all this, Safari still cannot log in. The same behaviour occurs when I hit the submit button, I'm just brought right back to the same page I started at, and am not logged in. Calendar never renders, or I'm left looking at the accounts log in screen.
It's notable that this issue does not appear to be specific to my google account, but specific to one particular Mac I use. I am able to login to google/accounts on my laptop, but not on my office machine using Safari.
To make it even more mind numbing, it seems to be specific to a user profile on my office Mac. I tried creating a new user account on this same machine, and with the fresh clean home directory, was able to login to google accounts, calendar, etc. So, obviously, a totally clean home directory, library, app support, etc results in usability.
I'm not sure where else to go with this. Are there other supporting files to Safari within my home directory that I missed removing to set it back to "clean". I cannot imagine the problem being specific to the application bundle for Safari since each user on the computer is using the same one, this behaviour must be related to something within the user home directory somewhere.
Anyone else seen this same behaviour and know how to fix it, preferably without just creating a new user and home dir.

  • Problem with services

Hello, I'm trying to set up my Arch Linux and I have a problem which I don't know how to solve.
Originally I tried to follow these steps
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Au … al_console
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Start_X_at_Boot ( I used "[[ -z $DISPLAY && $XDG_VTNR -eq 1 ]] && startxfce4" instead)
The system does login and  launches xfce, however "systemctl show-session 1" tells me that the session is inactive. Hence I cannot automount disks( correct me if I'm wrong).
I've tried fixing this problem and apparently did something wrong. I followed the instruction from post #12 from this thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1189675
Now when I run "systemctl --all" I get this:
    Any help would be appreciated!

Services folder? Do you mean Services menu? Most services require an appropriate selection. For example, to use Services > TextEdit > New Window containing Selection, you must select some text before it becomes active. Also Services won't work in some older applications. Try the TextEdit service in Safari. That should work.

  • My safari was opening and now does not, what can I do?

Safari was opening, but now appears lost. In the tool bar the word safari shows, but when you click on it, the only black words are services, hide safari, and hide others.  I thought I might be able to reset, but it is not highlighted.

when I try to drag another Safari to the toolbar of the account that doesn't launch, it doesn't work.
    You're right, that won't work.
Which OS X is installed on your Mac?
If you aren't sure, click About this Mac from your Apple menu 
You should see Reset Safari under Private Browsing from the Safari menu.

  • No internet for safari and .mac, but works for iChat and 3rd party browsers

After confusing safari (switching links while loading) sometimes I loose the internet connection for .mac services and safari. Safari will not connect to the internet, iDisk will not load or show in network prefs, etc. However, network still shows an internet connection, iChat still connects, third party (FireFox) browsers connect, etc. I just can't use some Apple apps that need internet. Usually, this has eventually corrected itself after reboots, but this time I can't get it to fix itself.

Odd, found it. Somehow the "web proxy" box was getting selected (by itself! a default?), effectively stopping the connection. Why that also affected some Apple apps and not others and not third party? I've no idea.

  • "Insecure Page" Pop-Down on Safari 6.1

I am getting a pop-down on Safari v6.1 that says my authorize.net credit card submission page is insecure, even though it is https with a lock icon. No such warning on Firefox. Also cannot log in to my merchant services on Safari but can on Firefox. My first response was to call our webhost to make sure our ssl certificate was ok and it was. The pop-down only happens on Safari and the test order went through anyway, even though I did not click "continue". This just started happening a few days ago. Does this sound like a hack or is anyone else having this problem with Safari? Very bad news for our business--no orders in 5 days!

've also had freezes and outright crashes, but only with Safari
Post a Safari crash report so we can try and help you.
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash  information.
Copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.

  • IPhone 5 Safari Faking "Private Browsing" Mode

I recently posted in another forum about how suspicious click-through ads were appearing on my iPhone 5 within certain media web sites. Since I have never run Safari without “private browsing” mode being on; have always had “limit ad tracking” turned on; third-party cookies blocked;  and have geolocation and location services (for Safari) turned off, that should have been impossible. While the discussion participants had come up with some interesting possibilities, I realized that I had neglected to check the “Website Data” screen in iPhone’s Setup. So I just checked the web site storage. Got an unpleasant surprise when I was greeted with a screen-full of URL’s beginning with www.stayinvisible.com and carbonite.com. Tapped on “show all sites” and 100 or more URL’s scrolled by, among them many Apple web sites. Even found a competitor’s web site URL that should not have been there, since I’ve never visited their web site, nor any legitimate web site that would have hosted anything that would have set a cookie on this device.
Apple’s privacy policy with the current version of Safari for iPhone 5 (within IOS 7.1.2 11D257) is very clear:
    "Private Browsing
When Private Browsing is enabled, Safari doesn’t remember the pages you visit, AutoFill information, and your open tabs aren’t stored in iCloud. Safari will also ask sites and their third party content providers (including advertisers) not to track you. Websites can’t modify information stored on your device, so services normally available at such sites may work differently until you turn off Private Browsing."
Apple stated that, “Websites can’t modify information stored on your device,…” yet I have in front of me proof that web sites CAN and DO modify information on my device while Safari’s “private browsing is on. This is very deceptive and a nasty way to treat customers who bought one of the most expensive PDA/smart phones on the market and now find that they have no web browsing security (Safari ignoring secure web site security certificate revocations, can’t detect bogus or malicious secure web sites), and apparently zero web browsing privacy, after Apple promised exactly the opposite.
Has anyone else finding that their web browsing security has been compromised with a recent vintage iPhone?

I’ve wiped the web cache several times since then. Several times I found more cookies in the web cache, at least once found over a hundred items, mostly for web sites I didn’t visit even once, but were all in my Safari bookmarks. Apparently, in addition to everything else going on, Apple appears to be rooting through my bookmarks without my permission.
Using Steve Gibson’s Cookie Forensics web page (https://www.grc.com/cookies/forensics.htm) I confirmed that web sites are able to save and retrieve cookie data from my iPhone with Private Browsing enabled. That violates Apple’s stated privacy policy.
The cookies that keep reappearing in the web cache, which also violates Apple’s stated privacy policy, apparently are leftovers from Safari crashes. I see five crashes in the past month, and crash logs for Safari going back to last year. Per my earlier post, after tapping the "delete" button, the cookies immediately disappeared, but then all came back at least once within a few seconds. That means IOS was hiding, and not deleting, the web cache when the "delete" button was tapped. The reappearing cookies are also only being hidden from the user, and become visible when a device crash prevents IOS from keeping the cookies hidden, since they've been in the web cache all the time.
I also see that other apps, like Podcasts, Stocks, and Weather are also writing or accessing items in the web cache, while “Private Browsing” mode has supposedly been “on.” The only thing “private” about “Private Browsing” mode is Apple deliberately hiding this activity from users.
Safari on IOS will allow web sites to track iPhone users regardless of an iPhone user’s device settings. Anyone who merely minimizes Safari between sessions, rather than killing the active Safari task, will find their device will act exactly the same whether “Private Browsing” is on or off. Safari might not prompt for, for example, a user name for a login, but if the web site stored a cookie with login info, it might already have you logged in (if a login were required for a particular page). And if a cookie were saved to the web cache after a device crash, Safari will again violate Apple's privacy policy and allow web sites to read and modify the cookies that were stored in the cache while "Private Browsing" mode were on. I confirmed that more than once.
Apple’s privacy policy for is a lie. Mobile Safari has no “Private Browsing Mode.”
